    Hi Sam,
    Gotta put you right about this…
    The Jubilees were a brand-new design.
    The Patriots were nominal rebuilds of the much earlier LNWR Claughton locomotives.
    Some of the Patriots were later rebuilt with taper boilers which made them look very similar to the Jubilees and indeed to the rebuilt Royal Scots.
    They all had a very similar chassis and wheelbase.

      i was going to say the same, wonky 3 pole motor, it will fail after the warranty has expired, in this case, the 3 pole motor in this loco should last for a few years.

      Hello Mr.@@SamsTrains, I have something to tell you, You NEED a Narrow gauge model railway. I would really like it if you started your own Narrow gauge model railway. Your model railway is OO scale, right? If it is OO scale than I say the Narrow gauge model railway should be a OO9 scale model railway. Standard gauge + Narrow gauge = Awesome.

    Hi Sam, great review as always. While I doubt that you'll see this comment I just want to thank you for making such wonderful videos. Model railroads were a big part of my childhood, but I began to forget about them when we got rid of our layout. I discovered your channel about a year ago and I was inspired to get back into the hobby, and I'm almost done laying the track on my new layout. I recently purchased my first Bachmann steam locomotive, a LBSCR H2 4-4-2 "Beachy Head" 31-921. The reasons why I bought this model are that it has tender pickups (yes, only on two of the three axles) and turned brass bearings on the two driver axles. I will not purchase a tender locomotive without those features, hence I do not expect to purchase too many Bachmann steam locomotives.

    What is good about these reviews of yours is the commentary which is in your usual and laconic style! I think the reason locos arrive with parts falling off is that the packaging is subjected to considerable violence in transit. When you buy something from Hatton's or directly from Hornby's website the packaging is always very careful, but not so with other suppllers. I have found locos where the box is protected with foam are okay, but if bubble wrap has been used, then that does not protect the loco from things falling off. Maybe in your review, you should review how well the item has been packed!

I have to ask though - what would it take for you to give a 0 star rating in any category? Even in some of the worst you've reviewed the minimum seems to be 1 star. Is 0 a score you would ever give?

    There is a tried and tested way I use to avoid receiving damaged goods by mail order. I buy from bricks and mortar model shops. I can do deals with them for a reasonable discount usually, order and view before I buy and have a personal relationship with the retailer. If one buys from box shifters these days, it now seems more likely than not, the goods will arrive damaged or with parts seperated. The Jubilee is a very tired model, indeed. There are a few second hand ones around for reasonable money, ironically, from the box shifters.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому +1

      You could be right - but that's not viable for me - model shops near me sell at near RRP prices, and I do buy lots of models so I can't afford that on a regular basis. Models that I consider to be quality very rarely arrive broken though
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @OlivierGabin

      For me, buying from a brick and motar shop means at least an international travel of around 1000 km by train (distance by rail from Grenoble, my hometown, to Dover, the closest UK city from where I live). So, mail orders only for me, no one sells UK trains in France as far as I know, certainly not in my city, especially while models shops in France are nearly all disappeared. And I spare you the considerations of passing customs due to some recent political changes...
      So, all internet ordres from me. Including non-UK trains, bought from Germany, lower price than in France where you always pays the full RRP anywhere you go shopping for model trains.

    I just love all the transitional era liveries. Tornado's BR apple green, Bude in exchange trials BR malachite green, and this in BR ex-LMS black.
    I'm tempted by the br apple green jubilee, since only a handful of locos ever carried that livery. But I've already got one in weathered BR green, sound fitted.
    The glue marks are not on, or the loose bit of valve gear. I didn't think the mechanism seemed too bad when I ran mine, since it runs quietly without sound, and can haul 40ish wagons without the torque disappearing.
    Have to say, the jubilees are my favourite LMS 4-6-0s, even though I only have 1 and only got it a year ago.

    I bought a Bachmann Jubilee some years back when they were retooled for which I paid £80 (RRP at the time!). It was also the last model I bought from my local model shop just before it closed. I was fortunate to get 'Victoria' complete with etched brass nameplates because it was a loco I remembered well from my childhood being a Holbeck loco which passed regularly through my hometown on Leeds-Blackpool services. It was and still is an excellent runner. The finish is also excellent. It would appear from your review that quality has gone south as the ridiculous price hikes have headed skyward!

    Sam I have a bit of a tip when handling models out of the box, don't hold them by the tender when picking them up from the box. The tender connection spigot can snap will all manufacturers, not only bachmann. It's just more common with bachmann models due to them for the most part being heavier than hornby models. Also with designs like the bachmann one with no fixing in the drawbar, it can unhook, putting the entire weight of the loco on the connection wires or just dropping the loco.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому

    My Mainline Railways Jubilee, Leander, came from a table stand on Kidderminster Town Station of Severn Valley Railway status a few years ago. She's a glossy engine of the Bachmann persuasion, and I paid £75 for her. Her first run on my then yet-to-be-named model railway was a great success. She ran on Ryan Ball's railway too, and she hasn't had any problems whatsoever. For what it's worth I believe that Bachmann have only re-tooled the Jubilee once, quite a while ago. Product numbers 131-160 and below are based on the old Mainline version with the split chassis (nice enough looking, but that mechanism is very prone to failure after a while). Product numbers above 131-160 are the redone version, finally getting rid of the split chassis. I have examples of both, in LMS livery. It is possible that Bachmann have done additional revisions that I don't know about. I believe I paid £90 for my more recent Jubilee.

My experience of it are very similar to your review... looks stunning, runs extremely well for the mechanism. There are no glue marks on it though and it was purchased second hand for not much less than what you paid for Madras. Your review of Bachmann models is spot on. My Stanier mogul has great detail and is a beautiful model but I had problems with the build quality. Within a minute of unboxing it ground to a stop. When I took engine apart two of the four screws that hold the engine in place were missing. After a couple of tries it would not move. I had to take apart the gear train and found the screws inside the drive gear. I was shocked by the poor assembly of the motor for the price (did not pay msrp but it was more expensive than my Hornbys). Looking at the inside the mogul was better quality than the Jubilee. At least there are brass bearings and tender pick up plus an addition support for the motor.

    Recently bought one of these but didn’t realise how early it was, undoubtedly one not long out of Mainline branding, and bought for current used prices for a much newer one, and was surprised to find moulded cab handrails instead as separate as most mainline models were very well finished for the era. It was a double chimney example and specifically Bahamas which I was lucky enough to have a driving experience on so naturally that was the example I wanted, and it was I guess the ‘Scotsman tax’ on a known and as preserved loco but definitely wasn’t worth the money, even less so than these newer ones

But, can I ask why you have your layout on the floor? I would assume there are some issues with that...harder to view at eye level, fluff in the locos, not possible to add ballast and scenery etc? I do wish that Bachmann and Hornby would update their tooling on the classic Stanier locomotives. For 160GBP I'd love to have a high spec Black Five or Jubilee. The Hornby one runs well but looks old, and the Bachmann one looks beautiful but has a poorer mechanism. Perhaps Dapol or Accurascale could take the plunge?

    If I had just purchased a new locomotive for a considerable sum, I would be quite pi**ed off if I found those dreadful bearings inside. I don't understand it. I have only Tri-ang and early Hornby locos. Even the 1959 ones have round holes for the axles, and they are still good over 60 years later. The Hornby ones from the early 1980s have brass bearings. That's 38 years ago. How hard can it be to change the casting and at least make them U shaped. No wonder people have a jaundiced attitude to modern things. Still, it does look lovely 😊 Cheers and glad to see you didn't wilfully damage it for once 😄

    The crankpin screw is because that rod over the crank needs to clear it? So nothing that protrudes out can be used. I don't really see many other solutions, except maybe to use a Torx screw where the spline for the driver almost looks like a round hole.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 роки тому +1

      Yup - but the simple solution is to incline the cam outwards a few mm and use a regular crank pin - Hornby always do valve gear this way and it looks much better! It also provides better clearance between moving parts; pretty important given the amount of 'slop' of the valve gear in most models... hence why I've had quite a few Bachmann locos go 'clicky' or in extreme cases seize up entirely!

    I’m starting to get the feeling these deep discounts and price drops are probably because of the finish issues, kinda a “scratch n dent” kind of deal, if you know what I mean. • @dkiely03
    @dkiely03 3 роки тому

    I disagree with your assesment of the loco-tender connection. I think that connections which can be easily separated are far better than (for example) the original Hornby Hogwarts Castle (which I believe was based on the Airfix Castle) which requires a screw to be undone every time you want to remove the tender, and then a delicate operation to reinsert all of the components of the link in the right places (a spring desinged to ensure electrical contact makes this a nightmare) before putting the screw back in, being careful not to overtighten it (which will pull out the piece of plastic which receives the screw, and means that you will have to hold the whole lot together with tape in future). When you have a mechanical issue on the loco, and need to take it apart to fiddle and then re-assemble to test multiple times, this becomes incredibly frustrating. I would have thought this system to be an improvement.

    So, comparison with cars in a nutshell :
    -engine overall look : 2010 vintage Ford Focus
    -motor and drivetrain : late 1940's Ford Anglia
    -finish of this model : 1970 Lada 1300 with drunk workers at the paint shop
    -price : 2020 BMW series 7
    For the finish, it's an Heljan-like botched work, great you got it fo GBP 80. I'm waiting to see their new V2, I've got the preceding model which is blatantliy outdated (and awfully noisy), and the new one is announced for an RRP of GBP 220... It is a completely retooled, but, as far as I have seen the pre-production sample pictures, Bachmann had succeeded to do their Hornby with a blind axle for the pony truck at the rear... The one I've got have a laterally sliding axle with real flanges, go figure...
    I have not received yet my J27, so, I cannot tell you in how many parts it will arrive at my home, and how much loose would the coupling rods be... Sincerely, when I'm seeing the very variable quality of the UK model trains, coupled with an steadily increasing price (sole and only hobby where the prices had not, at least, stay stable in real money, corrected from inflation, since the 1980s), I am wondering why I'm still modelling this. Especially when I made a comparison with my italian engines (Roco plus Rivarossi for the steam ones, add Piko and Brawa for the diesels). If I would start modelling trains today, with the knowledge of the market I've got, sincerely, I would certainly scrap the idea of doing UK trains. Fortunately, there is stronger reasons for me to keep on doing, and not because I've got a noticeable amount of rolling stock.
    As you said, overpriced and low quality, a model you can avoid.
