Beer, beach and bloodshed: How German occupation of Qingdao, China led to Tsingtao Beer 中英字幕

- You’ve probably heard of Tsingtao beer - it’s definitely one of China’s most famous exports - but you may not know the bloody story of how it came to be set up, and how it inevitably helped lead to the May Fourth Movement, a political turning point in China’s recent history.
The beach city of Qingdao, part of Shandong Province and today home to some 9 million, has been the plaything of foreign forces for much of the 20th century, with German forces seizing the city in the late-1890s before the Japanese took over in 1914.
When the Treaty of Versailles proposed transferring Qingdao, and other areas, directly to the Japanese instead of returning them to the Chinese people, the May Fourth Movement was born, significantly changing the course of the world’s most populous nation.
Come with me as I visit the city of Qingdao, the Tsingtao Beer factory, May Fourth Square and other must-visit spots while discussing the city’s tumultuous history.

Another interesting and insightful episode. I like the way you dipped into the local history and culture so that the overseas viewers will gain an objective and full picture of China. Great job, Andy!
Thanks so much, Grace!

Have you heard about Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) ? In WWI, 140,000 young and strapping Chinese men mostly came from Shandong province who travelled to Europe to support British and French forces and suffered high casualties in the battle. Some were poorly treated and murdered. In the post-war Treaty, Shandong was supposed to be returned to China upon Germany defeat but the occupied Eight Alliance decided handed it over to Japan instead. Imagine the sheer betrayal the Chinese must have felt. Never again will the Chinese trust these western imperialists. There was a documentary made about these men's sacrifice and deliberately erased from the war history. Chinese have suffered enough.
That is a sad fact; the similar unfair fact is also seen from US history that the rail road workers from China were ignored in history and further got excluded through the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Absolutely agree.
China must remember and learn from history how it was treated. Your country curved up, countrymen discriminated and killed. Chart your own path and not believe people who talk with forked tougue. China was threatened with nuclear shrike not once but 3 times, during the Korean war, Vietnam War and Soviet conflict. So remember all these and continued to enlarge your nuclear arsenal.
The Versailles treaty wasn't decided by the Eight Alliance. Conditions were dictated to Germany for example.
@Gregory Jones Would you understand if it was done under duress? Just like Hong Kong was ceded to the British colonists under the threat of more gunboat war. And the opening up of many ports in China to Western powers under duress.
Thank you Andy for the clip, reminding me of my happy trips there , hope we here from Hong Kong can go back to the Mainland earlier than later.
I really enjoyed this video on Qingdao. Love the drone and street level shots. 👍🏼👍🏼😍
So glad you liked it! The next city, Nantong, is beautiful in its own way, too. 😁
@@ReportsOnChina I’m definitely going to look out for and watch it! I’m subscribed to your channel, so it’ll pop up in my list. 👍🏼🙏🏼
If you enjoyed this video, raise your hand to show Andy your endless support ✋🔥🙋
I am Chinese and living in Auckland. Thanks so much you love China and report real China to more kiwis.

This is the post-truth age.
another great and insighttful video of Andy. Professional!
Thanks, touching and informative 👍
Fascinating video. I’ve learnt much from it. Do you do your own editing? If so you have phenomenal skills, your videos are always so pleasing to watch. I love how the architecture in this city has a European and Chinese mix. You have those old German buildings and the Buddhist pagodas. Looking forward to the next stop of your trip!
Thanks so much for the kind words - I’m really glad you find my videos soothing. Yeah, I do all the editing and filming and research etc. Unless I’m in the shot, it was 99% shot by me.
A lot of Chinese cities have a fascinating mix of architectural styles - the stories behind them are just as interesting. 😁
That red fridge magnet rocks. I am very much like you when I travel, stopping by to get those fridge magnets with iconic representations of the city is a must.
I never got one in Nantong ;(
@@ReportsOnChina An excuse to go back another day :)
Thanks for this Andy. I lived in Qingdao for a year and I loved it there. It’s a beautiful city and the development has been amazing. Every time I visit it changes, the subway was built so quickly.
Bummer, I didn’t check out the subway! Next time…
A special city
Quindao is an awesome city. I have been there 4 times and everything is so cheap and the people are cool too.
Great video
Good one!!

Great video! Love to see the interview and interaction with the local people and its history😀
Now I've been stuck on this big ass god forsaken island called Australia for almost three years. I miss my home so much.

Life is what you make it.
Another interesting and we'll produced episode. Wish it is a little longer. Perhaps 10 to 15 minutes?
Look forward to your next episodes!
Thank you.

Looking fat! Haha
Hey, Andy! Thank you for the video of Tsingtao tour 👏👏👏 How i hope i can visit there one day. Also, i bet you liking a lot of beer ice cream, don't you? Can you find it in Kiwi? 😋
I’m sure you’ll visit soon!! The beer ice cream was amazing!!! They also have dark beer flavored ice cream which is just as good. Unfortunately the beer and bread are only available at the factory for now.
@@ReportsOnChina Thank you Andy for the encouragement. 😘 You so lucky to try the unique beer ice creams there, but where is the dark beer ice cream? You prefer ice cream than beer? Hahaha, just kidding
@@kelic5035 For sure! I’m not an alcohol drinker. ;) p
@@ReportsOnChina I see. Me either ✌😬 Good rest and look forward your next vlog soon
Andy, would you able to make longer video? Maybe around 10 minutes than just 6 to 7? Not enough for me leh... 😬

You should have hooked with Jerry Goode another vlogger in Qingdao..Peace and JaYoe
For me it’s always best to focus on the locals, unless I’m doing a video specifically about expats… thanks for watching, Mark!
beautiful look at legendary Tsingtao or Qingdao today
I love coast city, I love qingdao
👍👍👍💪💪💪
Good
Andy, your spoken Mandarin is so fluent. How long have you been in China to master the language?
Hey Andy, I'm from Germany and I'm interested in China. You seem sympathic and I like your videos. You are really doing much for peace between cultures and are holding a mirror in front of the wests face.👍
I lived in Qingdao for 4 years! i missit sooo much! You should have visited the KIWI CAFE, the man who owns it lived/worked in New Zealand & i think his son still lives there! He has loads of pics & memorabilia from there! His food, coffee, cakes are delicious & he always will be up for a nice chat (in Chinese or English 😎)
I like to try Tsingtao beer~
Keep doing
Wow I wanna check out Qingdao. What’s the population size there?
As always !!!
Oh Andy I only found out that you were in my city. Next time you are here gimme a shout out. i would really like to treat you to a cold beer over a conversation. Thank you for your efforts to expose the world to a true China.
Thanks Michael! 🍺
Interesting, this could have been a much longer video, how about a proper doco? :)
It's all a time issue - it would be a real pain to invest a lot of time and energy into a longer form doco and then have only a couple of thousand views haha. Will wait until I get more followers. :D
I feel ashamed that being Chinese myself, I don't know much about the "wu si yundong" and I guess many other Chinese fellows don't either. Thanks Andy for this incredible video and you should post it on all Chinese platforms if you haven't done it already.
A little bit of history lesson.
Didn't know your Chinese is so fluent.
haha thanks, I hardly get a chance to use it in videos anymore.
Foreign youtubers are a great asset for the Chinese,,people,
谁知道youtube的评论区翻译怎么改?我想要改成中文的,要不然这些英文评论就只会看一点点,剩下的根本不会😭
👍👍👍👍👍
Great report on Qingdao Andy. No wonder the beer is good there… it’s German beer! 😉 it’s interesting that the Germans occupied the place then the Japanese …. Sounds like China’s been kicked around a fair bit. I didn’t even know! The place looks very interesting. I’m so glad you’ve educated in the history and shown me around the city. I’m going to try visit the city! Man your Chinese is awesome! 👍👍👍
I am sure you like the city, coast city that similar to NZ
百年国耻 吾辈自强
Are there still Germans living there?
Fresh beer is amazingly good, I taste it just once when I went to study tour with my class to a beer factory, back to 1997. And never taste it again until now 😂😂😂
