That's one of my favorite songs! Any parent can relate, especially if you have a daughter! But it can be for a son also. It reminds us to enjoy our children while they are still children because the time goes by too fast! ❤
🧡❤Darius Rucker's voice is Amazing!! BP, try Darius songs like "SOUTHERN STYLE", "HOMEGROWN HONEY", "DON'T THINK I DON'T THINK ABOUT IT", "IF I TOLD YOU", "COME BACK SONG". Hope you dive into him!! He's got a huge catalog!! 💜💜
@@lawwdogg1digr I didn't think showing up and doing the number of shows members agree to do is ridiculous. They can turn down the invitation or leave if they choose. It's still the ultimate honor for true country artists to play on that circle, with that microphone.

Hey! I just found this pod and this song was released in a time of my life that was a very tumultuous time. I was in my latter teen years and my mother was an alcoholic. She did dabble into some other substances as well. There are many verses that describe my feelings about my life and the love I had for my mom at that time. She often did the walking in at all times of the night most of the time quite intoxicated. This song to me has always been about me and my mom’s relationship during her hard drinking days. I used to run my hands through her dark hair then I pray to God help fly away. Real prayers like that were said. Just wanted to give another point of view.
I love Darius’s voice, it just reaches inside my chest. I went to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC from 1982-1986. I remember seeing Xerox copies of Hootie & The Blowfish flyers around campus when they were just starting out. Sadly, I never went to see them.
As someone who’s alcohol addiction forced their spouse to leave them. I’m sober now, but it took the loss of someone who loved me to say I can’t do this anymore for me to realize what I needed to do and find myself again. This song tells me how she felt at the end.
What got me sober was finding out I was pregnant with my first child.Went from a bottle of vodka a day to absolutely nothing overnight. Been sober for 33 years now
I have a hard time listening to this... my daughter battled addiction.... the long black curly hair.... describe her. She lost her battle 4/10/14. Left 2 little girls and a broken hearted family.
This song resonates with me deeply. I've been married to an alcoholic for 40 years the end of this month. I was only 17 years old when we met. He was 23, already an alcoholic. I was a very nieve, sheltered young lady and didn't realize what alcoholic really meant. I had never been around anyone who drank. I was very focused on school, whereas my husband was very street smart. It's been a hard life, very hard. I sacrificed myself to try to help my husband be the best person he could be free of alcohol. My self-esteem, my self-worth, my innocence has been slowly taken away from me by his addiction. Recently, after being with my husband for 42 years total, I reached the end of my rope. We are currently separated and will be divorced soon. This is actually our second divorce. I divorced him in my 20s, but then remarried him a few years later after he convinced me that he couldn't live without and would do whatever it took to be my husband again. As you can see, those were all lies. I understand and feel every emotion in this song. Thank you for reacting to it.
One of the things that the loved ones of addicts have to remember. When your with an addict, it's like your with two separate beings. The one being is the one that loves you, wants to do anything and everything to make you happy, and derives their own happiness by being with you. The other being is the addiction. You can't talk to the addiction, you can't reason with it, you can't control it. You can lend your loved one SOME strength to help them be stronger than the addiction, but you can't do it to the point where you suffer as well. You just can't. The person with the addiction has to have the honest desire to be the stronger one, if they can't do that, the addiction will always win. The addiction will always force the addict to choose the addiction over EVERYTHING.
My Moms sister went through the same thing. She sacrificed what she wanted to be with her husband. To help him. He threatened suicide. She felt she had no choice but to stay. She did not want his death on her conscience. We all told her what he does is on him. She stayed till he passed in his 50s. The alcohol got him. They had 6 kids. She put them through all that too. Was not good. All her children were alcoholics. Only two left. She started living for herself. Remarried a wonderful man. She was finally happy. Then he got cancer after only 5 years. Lived another 2. 😱😢😢She lived another 22 alone. Sometimes I think she did not deserve to be happy because of her kids having to live and grow up in a mess. 😢
When Cracked Rear View Mirror released in July 1994, Hootie was a huge part of my life for a solid five years after that. I would have been 21 to 26 years of age during that period, experiencing so much of life. I've been a fan ever since. Their music is timeless.
Man had to click as soon as I saw Hootie in the title, but damn I didn't want to be crying on my bus to work. I loved this song back in the day though none of my friends ever heard of them
Darius Rucker recalled that he had just listened to the song "She Talks to Angels" by the Black Crowes for the first time and was listening to a record by blues singer Bonnie Raitt and "in one stream of consciousness" wrote the lyrics to the song
Met him back in 98, he is a super great guy. He was in my town to performe with Hootie & Blowfish. He also was in parade. Stayed at private golf course i was working at. Ohio showed him a fun night before parade. I got him tylenol he was feeling rough lol Pro Football Hall of Fame week is such a fun time. Love Darrius ❤ they are doing performances still 😊 Love all their music.
The song is about a man struggling to cope with his alcoholic wife, but Darius stated in numerous interviews that he wrote the song based on his past, but with the genders reversed, he was the irresponsible drunk whose long-suffering girlfriend tried to keep things together.
Yeah, the lady in the song is an addict. Lots of tracks about that during the 1990s. At the time I was too young and divided to like this group- they were a band the popular and preppie kids at my school were into. Thank God all those lousy years are way behind me. Now I can appreciate their songs and the guy’s very solid voice.
I just saw them live last night along with Edwin McCain and Collective Soul!! It was FANTASTIC!! They’re from my home state South Carolina! (Go Cocks!!) Edwin McCain is from my hometown of Greenville, SC!
According to the good ol' Wikipedia, this song was inspired by/a reaction to "She Talks to Angels" by another amazing 90's band, The Black Crows. Rucker had listened to it (STtA) then was shortly thereafter was listening to Bonnie Riatt and was suddenly had an inspiration and wrote this song. You MUST dive into The Counting Crows. Raw, blues based guitar rock, that was a throwback to the 60's and 70's but with a modern appeal. Darius Rucker said he was at a bar and first heard "She Talks to Angels" by the Black Crowes and was amazed by the song. Went to another bar and asked them to play it. And another. Then he went home a bit buzzed, listened to a Bonnie Raitt album while he played Madden, then wrote this song out in a stream of consciousness. Hootie & The Blowfish had other hits as well: "Hold My Hand", "Only Wanna Be With You"; "I Go Blind".
Darius Rucker had a great career with his band the blowfish and then as a solo artist. What a voice! Go down the rabbit hole BP. Get Don or Andy to join you on this artist. ❤😂. He did write this song BP!!! Incredible song writing!
This was his "She Talks To Angels" by the Black Crowes. "Dar's the one one I love the most, but Stipe's not far behind"..... great line about her love for him as a musician and R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe.
To me the song represents dealing with somebody with addictions for sure which I can relate to because I've been through it... It's one of the worst things you can ever go through watching someone you love destroy themselves and not care about anything.
Just saw Hootie in concert in Virginia Beach last Saturday. He can still sing. Sometimes (ie Collective Soul), voices don't age well. Darius Rucker: His vocals are still strong and healthy. I last saw Hootie in concert in December 1998 on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise in Dubai, UAE, before we sailed into the gulf for Desert Fox. So he's one of those: free concerts to the Armed Services in a combat zone. Love Darius....
Love this song and video. It was partially filmed (if not totally) in Charlotte, NC...I think about this song as I drive up Wilkinson Blvd into Charlotte.
I am so grateful I was able to see them at M.S.U. during the Hootie years. I have heard Wagon Wheel somewhere, but I don't generally do Country, so I haven't heard anything from him since. Thanks for the flashback!
You should have gotten their newest album and went to one of their concerts on this summer tour they are just about to finish up. You say "havent heard from him since.." if you aren't trying to hear them
Only Wanna Be With You is likely the song you've heard before. But their later stuff that no one else knows is just as amazing. Miss California from their 2019 album is a great one
This song is STILL one of the Greatest songs ever imo. My Carolina boys. They used to come through town often, one of their Roadies was from here and his mom was a dear friend of mine. Them and the guys from the Goo Goo Dolls were some of the coolest, most down-to-earth musicians I ever met.
Darrius is so talented, his road it awesome. The ability to write and tell heart felt stories is his talent. Beers and Sunshine, Southern Comfort, Don't Think I Don't Think About It, It Won't Be Like This for Long (this one alone is about your current life), Southern State of Mind, I Got Nothin', Twenty Something, Life's Too Short, I will throw in a Christmas song What God Wants for Christmas. Enjoy...
It was a total throwback to classic rock, pre-MTV. That's why I liked it so much at the time 👍 Same with the Black Crowes. Real music was making a comeback, after a lost decade.
Fun Hootie story.... I once knew a guy who caddied (like caddy on the golf course, while my friend was in college I believe). Apparently Hootie liked to golf, and got the itch while on tour in the midwest. So he bought a set of clubs and a golf bag, went out golfing with a friend or 2 on some afternoon on a day without a show, and then tipped my friend (the caddie) the set of golf clubs and the golf bag! I guess he is a genuinely nice fellow in person :)
Had the chance to meet Darius when he came back to Columbia, SC and was the nicest down to earth guy in the world. Saw Hootie a few weeks ago when they came to DFW and they still sound killer!
Was at his concert a few weeks ago and Darius said he wrote this song after hearing the Black Crows song ‘She Talks to Angels’ at a bar in Columbia SC….. btw, he is great in concert if u get the chance…..
Don't remember hearing this one before. The feeling of this song made me think of a dear friend who is an alcoholic. Addiction is rough on the addict and the people who love them. He is sober for over 35 years now, it was indeed a fight and almost destroyed him.
Wow. First time I've watched the video. The video was filmed in Charlotte, BBQ King is a landmark, great BBQ, and the Copal Grill, are both on Wilkinson Blvd.
Hootie! Had the pleasure of seeing these guys live back in '94 in NC at a college lawn party. Sounded awesome live ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 thanks BP! P.s. this is one of my favs of theirs. Another fav is, "Time"-underrated in my opinion ;-)
Love the group and their songs! You should take a listen to Time & Only Wanna Be With You. His voice is so distinct. You hear a couple of words, and immediately, you know it's Darius. The music alone is a dead giveaway that it's Hootie!
Scenes from this video were shot on Wilkinson Blvd. in Charlotte, NC. Copal Grill opened in 1947 and closed in 2009. In 2015, the iconic neon sign was found on Craigslist.

Darius was invited to join as a member of the Grand Old Opry by Brad Paisley a few years back. That's the ultimate honor for a country singer.
Used to be. Not so much any longer. The requirements from the Opry are ridiculous.

Great song 👏👏
"Past the point of rescue" was another great song about recovering from alcohol addiction..💔
Love this song, love his voice
I absolutely love Darius Rucker's voice. First heard him when Hooty and the Blowfish came out.
They wrote their own songs and started their band in college here in SCarolina! They became famous straight out of college! I love his country music!
Wow. First time I've watched the video. The video was filmed in Charlotte, BBQ King is a landmark, great BBQ, and the Copal Grill, are both on Wilkinson Blvd.
OMG I love this, so good to hear it again
I have enjoyed both Hootie and the Blowfish and Darius Rucker as a solo artist. He has a distincitive voice.
Love Darius Rucker!!! He's in country music and brings so much to the table. Enjoy his music no matter what it us!.
Definitely worth the trip down the rabbit hole
Going to see Hootie and the Blowfish on Thursday Sept 26. This dude could sing the dictionary and sound amazing!!
Cool! I live about an hour from their hometown of Columbia SC.
I always thought she may have suffered mental illness. Such a good story teller and I absolutely love his voice!! Thanks for the reaction!
You can't miss with any of his music. I love, it won't last for long, If you knew me, Radio. And so many more
Whaaaaaat What!!!!!
Great song. Only wanna be with you is a great feel good summer time jam!!
This song never fails to make me cry
I love to hear you analyze the lyrics & break down what you feel from the music. May I suggest you react to "Not Even the Trees" by Hootie❤
This is one of my favorite songs
