- Anti-science mentality is rampant in this day and age, and one of the more peculiar aspects of this trend is the current fad that is the Flat Earth model. There exists a group of people who believe that against everything we have come to learn throughout the scientific revolution, the world is actually flat, and the center of the universe. That's not all, there's a big cover up, with NASA, and all the governments, like some real sci-fi stuff. Let's go through some of the talking points of this model and see if we can deconstruct it, shall we?

I find it hilarious how the ancient Greeks found out the Earth was round based off of the shadows of pillars. Now we have satellites, rockets, and other forms of viewing the Earth from a God’s eye view and people still think the Earth is flat

If they say "south of west", then you knwo Earth isn't flat, as that naked-eye observation would not comport with the Flat Earth. Hell, sunsets by their very nature disprove a Flat Earth.

Cant believe I had to do this, but I gotta thank you. I have a friend who I always knew was on the dimmer side, but I didnt learn he believed in the flat earth until a few weeks ago. I found this video and showed it to him. He is actually pretty good at math and such, so he checked over the (very obvious) things that you stated in the video. He is no longer a flat earther, and frankly feels stupid for believing it for so long.. Now I just gotta convince him the moon landing was real imo. Thank you though, helped out a lot man.

@@joopmoop4089 sometimes it happens that the set of information he had at the time makes a flat earth model seems sensible. People like this aren't stupid (like we know who) but is basically lack of information. They can digest new knowledge and correlate with what knowledge they have. But it happens that the poor guy stumbled upon the flat model first, before his good friend provided him with a source of information for the guy to rethink the earth model.
Its like how school teach really basic science stuff like if you put static on an object, it can attract water because water is a polar molecule. Very simple to prove water is a polar molecule. Its replicatable. Later down the line in education, you discover more stuff about intramolecular forces, and electrostatic forces. You now realise that while it is true that water is polar because surface tension of water is caused by hydrogen bonding, the forces aren't enough to curve flowing water. And its simply electrostatic charge on the object that curved the water. Still simple and coherent and replicable.

When I was a teenager I was like a joking member of Flat Earth Society, not because I really believed the Earth is flat but rather because I just found it fun to try to come up with increasingly convoluted means of explaining phenomenon on a flat world. Consistency isn't flat earthers' strong suit. "Hiding God" seems to be the most common answer, but when asked directly, most of them tend to avoid answering and give responses like so they can keep funneling money to NASA or something like that. They seem to think atheists are much more numerous and powerful than they really are.

Actually his agenda is to vaccinate the entire globe. Dave's agenda is not to debunk flat earth but to attack anyone that questions whether vaccinations are safe or not. He's just using the flat earthers to smear what he calls "anti-vaxers".
This whole agenda is to smear anti-vaxers. Dave uses the same technique that flat earthers use of guilt by association in order to achieve this without actually arguing the vaccination issue on merits.
Mr. Dave is using the same technique flat earthers use but because you don't notice he's using baseless rhetoric to smear antivaxers just like the flat earthers use baseless rhetoric to smear those who know and can prove the earth is a globe.
Why don't you notice it? Because he's deliberately hiding it by using real science to debunk flat earthers so that you'll trust him -- so that when he attacks "anti-vaxers" (his way of smearing people that dare to ask questions about the safety of vaccinations) you won't notice he's doing it because he first gained your trust by using real science to (correctly) discredit flat earthers.
This has CIA written all over it. The average person is not that clever. Not that Dave is necessarily doing what he's doing knowingly -- he's probably just an unwitting asset.

To future people: watch the gradual progression of Professor Dave on this issue as he butts heads with the flat earth and pseudoscientific community, particularly during the COVID era. It is like watching the Great Cthulhu awaken from its long slumber. It is beautiful and terrifying to witness in its own right as Professor Dave eventually just takes the gloves off and pummels relentlessly with Science.

The older flat earth concept is far more interesting: a flat earth rests on 4 elephants standing on the shell of a turtle.

Tbh a lot of the older theories about the world's shape are pretty freaking cool- flerfs like to claim that all ancient civilizations thought the world was flat.. actually looking at ancient maps of the world though? We have realms which pass through each other ethereally, a world of mountains and streams upon the back of a great god or beast, the entire world existing upon the side and base of a mountain, "traditional" flat earth (hilariously, even unpopular at the time due to being incompatible with navigation), and so many more. We have worlds of rings, small pocket worlds created by divine pantheons, and even worlds born out of the battles of primordial gods, but flerfs chose "it is a pancake kinda" out of all of them?

I had my education up to high school in Hong Kong for 18 years, I then moved to the US to continue my studies because why not. One day I had the idea of asking my friends in the US of what they thought about the earth. Surprisingly, 2 of them arent convinced that the earth is round.
You know what I did after year 1, I returned to Hong Kong.

When I try to discuss this with my dad, you can never say the word gravity because he completely believes it doesn't exist, he believes the law of density keeps us down. But there is a pretty good explaination for why it isnt the law of density.

I seriously pissed off a Flat-Earther not long ago during an online debate. He actually blocked me, and then left the debate saying, and I quote him "F-U guys, you tricked me to coming here". LOL
Ok, here was what I'd done. I put up a set of four flat-earth maps and asked him to pick which one was the correct one. Which he did. Then I asked him to explain how the sun and moon caused day and night. THEN I asked him, "Ok, on this same map, how do solar and lunar eclipses happen? And he began to stammar and haw and go "they don't exist, it's a hoax, a conspiracy, " etc... and I said politely "Sir, we see them all the time, one is coming up in a couple of weeks, a solar eclipse. If what you say of day and night cycle is true, then how can this happen?
And he immediately blocked me after a few nasty choice words and insults.

He complains about having to drive three hours to see it at totality: _“Is that worth it? No, not in my opinion,”_ but he'll go anyway, because _“all we have to do is get the attention of people.”_
The experience changes his view: _“Totally worth it. Worth it. Worth every second of it. So glad I'm here.”_
But, of course, he doesn't say, _“It happened exactly when and where the astronomers said it would! Why can't we in the Flat Earth community make predictions like that?!”_
And he also didn't say that solar eclipses _don't exist._ Even for a flat-earther, that would be a difficult thing to say while actually looking at one.

It is truly baffling that flat earthers exist in this day and age.
I am amazed at your patience and knowledge.
I'm a hobby (astro)physicist but psychologist by trade and I thought of a psychological model to go with the flat earth society and why it is so much more prevalent in very meritocratic societies - i.e. the USA.
A large part of US culture is Calvinistic in essence saying with hard work come more blessings. This translates into the "American Dream" where anyone can become anything regardless of heritage only depending on their own talents and efforts. Unfortunately this also puts a lot of blame on those who, well, don't get very far on the social hierarchy. The mind is wonderful at compensating for negative thoughts and emotions, rationalising them away unconsciously in amazing ways.
My hypothesis is now, that most flat earth followers are a special type of narcissist personality who fail to reach a societal level they think they deserve. You can then either reevaluate your self-image (which is painful) or you re-evaluate society. By subscribing to a conspiracy theory you not only elevate yourself to an elitist, enlightened level only attained by few, you also simultaneously degrade every person that you previously had to "look up to", e.g. academics, politicians and "smarter" people. Furthermore, you find others with exactly the same mindset and company is always good.
That is also the reason why challenging any flat earth follower with rational arguments will most likely amount to nothing, because following your logic they would have to challenge their self-image and re-evaluate their social standing.
And the unscientific part of me relishes the thought of a perfect trap where you either have to get down to the bottom with your argumentation or admit you fit into the diagnosis of an anti-authoritarian narcissist... But that is really just a side note.

We have seen the power of individuals who coalesce these nebulous feelings and provide a simple scapegoat as cause, which can lead to mass action directed towards a "solution". Invariably, the people driving that bus are not stupid, unlike the herd that they mobilize, and no special skills or education are required to participate. I've never had the experience of having to deal with a flat-earther in the family ... don't know what to suggest for bringing her round to reality.
I wonder what made her become a flat-earther. Was it religious fundamentalism? Exposure to FE content on the internet?
Maybe just leave well alone; but has she thought about all the other people who have to be "in on the secret"? I just watched another guy's youtube video about how to get flat earthers to shut up and in it he asked like 7 questions about the moon that flat earthers refuse to answer. Like how does the moon work? How far way is the moon? How come we can only see one side of the moon no matter where we are on earth? How come the moon doesn't change sizes as it moves across the night sky? Any flat earther who has any hope of coming to their senses, will realize they were conned once they recognize that they cannot explain how the moon works without admitting the earth is round.

Theoretically, a solar eclipse could happen on a flat earth. The moon could pass under the sun and cast a shadow on the earth. It's the lunar eclipse that makes no sense at all on a flat earth. If the sun and moon are circling above a flat earth, how would the earth come between them and cast a shadow on the moon?

@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 I used to troll flat earth videos back in the day. Flat earthers would say, Antarctica surrounds the Earth to keep the oceans from pouring off. They also say that there's secretly even more Earth beyond Antarctica that only the elites know about. These people are nuts.
Actually, the prediction of events like eclipses via the mathematics of the spherical earth model is probably the clearest indication of it's correctness and usefulness. It is the true scientific model. Flat earth model is a non-starter here.
I feel like midnight sun in antarctica is one of the biggest flaws. I would love to hear the answer to that one. It’s easy in the northpole, but not possible around the entire ‘ice wall’.
My favourite part is that they have no answer for what the benefit of this conspiracy is.

I would say that is not science at all.
Of course, anyone with a rudimentary understanding of the globe earth model wouldn't be so silly as to propose that "north" means "up" as on our globe Earth, "up" means "away from the center of the planet". Since the ocean suface is equidistant from the center of the planet both in Chile and in Mexico, ships going from the former to the latter wouldn't be going up. Anyone proposing otherwise in regards to a globe-shaped Earth is just silly.

This is brilliant. Thanks. As a science teacher, I try my best to instill scientific literacy into my students. It is so important that our youth grow understanding not only how the natural world works, but more importantly, how to question and problem solve without bias. I was just thinking, I bet there are not any Astronomers, Astrophysicists, Rocket Scientists, Planetary Scientists, Meteorologists that believe in the flat earth. There is no mathematics in the flat earth model that would allow a rocket to travel into space, to use the gravitational pull of the earth for acceleration, and to reach another body in space.
To flat earthers:
1. Show me a picture of the edge of the earth.
2. Look at a normal picture of space.
3. Attatch a camera to a weather balloon, and review the footage after the ballon pops.
4. Show me what the bottom of your "flat earth" looks like.
5. Have common sense.
6. Try to learn a bit of science.
To round earthers:
Nothing, you are all right about the shape of the earth!
