  • In this episode, I interviewed Writer Paul Benedict Rowan, who wrote a book called, RYAN'S DAUGHTER: The Making Of An Irish Epic! RYAN'S DAUGHTER (1970), was directed by David Lean, written by Robert Bolt and starred Sarah Miles, Robert Mitchum, Christopher Jones, Trevor Howard and John Mills!
This is one of the best "Making Of" Film books I've ever read and I highly recommend it. It's not just for film fans or fans of the film but for anyone because it's a highly engaging story full of struggles, conflicts, humour and much more !

    In my opinion
“Ryan’s Daughter “ is one of the greatest films , ever made , everything about it is perfect.
My biggest regret is that I never saw it in 70mm at the Empire Theatre.

In all seriousness, David Lean simply should have ignored the jealous narrow minded critics, Ryans Daughter, beautifully restored, is his most gorgeously photographed film.

Thanks to Pauline Kael, David Lean didn't make movies throughout the 70's. We movie buffs missed out big time.

Hello again, Robert, Thankyou for another entertaining video. I have read Paul's book and liked the way he delved deeper into some of the myths surrounding RD. I think he hits the nail on the head with the cultural clash between the English theatre types and the American film actors. I also find it bizarre that so many people happily admit to spiking Chris's food and drink. Elaine

Hi Elaine thanks for watching! I'm glad you read the book. Yes it is extremely bizarre, yet darkly funny that they would go to such lengths to come him down, but Lean would do anything for this films.

Thanks for sharing, he was perfect in the role in Ryan's Daughter. The love scene in the forest is excellent and the sexiest scene ever.

I'm watching the film for the first time now. Love Sarah Miles , but Christopher Jones is the weak link here. Per his girlfriend at the time, Olivia Hussey's autobiography he was totally out of it; they had to sneak Valium into his food and such to keep him going. The love scene with Sarah had to be faked with cinematography due to his not being able to perform; the irony is Robert Mitchum plays her impudent husband which causes her to seek the Major. Mitchum of course is the opposite of his character, but director David Lean likes to cast actors against type. Overall the film is worth watching in spite of many issues.

I actually thought Jones was quite good in it.

The character he plays has shell shock from the trenches of World War One so when you say he’s the ‘weak link’ that’s the point. He’s supposed to be.

Who said he's the "weak link"? This is from a yr and a half ago, so refresh my memory
