I adore Ryan's Daughter, it was unfairly maligned because critics thought a movie about a young Irish girl could not be taken seriously. I recommend everybody see the film and experience it on the big screen if you ever find a screening.

Couldn't agree more. Marvellous film. Felt that Anthony mingella the English patient was .also a superb .epic love story.

So glad that Ryan's Daughter won Best Cinematography. Just look at the opening scene with the clouds and the ocean. Just beautiful!!!! It just shows you that they don't make pictures like those anymore!!! Everything is just digital, not film. Sad.

That's what waiting around half a day for the right cloud formation will get you.
In any other year it would've gone to Billy Williams' excellent work on "Women in Love" but there was no beating "Ryan's Daughter" for cinematography that year. The famous lovemaking scene was shot on a soundstage and later, after the film was cut together, even the participants had trouble identifying what was really outdoors and what had been shot indoors. Seamless.

Hard to decide who is the most beautiful...Bujold, Miles, the gorgeous J.E. Jones or Young's cinematography... (But then again, maybe it's Jarre's score...quoted here by the Oscar orchestra but not even nominated...and that's a damn shame...)
The other nominees were all Hollywood/Brit/Japanese experts in their field, but frankly nothing could dare compete with 'Ryan's Daughter' which surely ranks in the top 25 most beautiful colour films ever shot. You lose count of the number of shots which are non-pareil (the love scene in the forest has enough for a whole film), but a personal favourite of mine is when the Major arrives at the bus stop. There's a shot of him in chiaroscuro with a slash of light across his eyes - unbelievalble!

You're so right. But the biggest shame is that " Ryan's Daughter " is only available on Blu-ray in Spain! Cheers.

Goddamn it, why can't people show up for the Oscars like this today? Did Bujold and Jones phone each other? Look at that tougue-in-cheek 'ebony and ivory' colour combo! Genius! The gold lamé and the little velvet choker are the ne-plus-ultra of it all. Agree with the comment below about the surplus of beauty in one moment (Jones, Bujold, Miles, Young, Jarre). Those were the days.

Freddie Young was asked shortly before he died what advice he would give to young cinematographers and without hesitation he replied 'invest in more light bulbs' he explained he couldn't understand the modern tendency to shoot moves in almost semi-darkness....I wonder what this great man would have thought about the scourge of the shaky hand held video shots and the chop saw editing that makes many movies totally unwatchable.

Freddie had a total of 3 nominations with two wins when he won for RD. Perhaps that's what Sarah meant. Still it was great seeing her 'accept' an award in her sole Oscar appearance during her brief, and somewhat scandalous, sojourn in Hollywood. BTW, can anyone tell me where the music under the montage is from? It's driving me crazy...

Big technical innovation of the time: showing stills By the way this is the 1971 Oscars (which awarded 1970 films). Sarah Miles was nominated for best actress, but didn't win.
