That makes no sense-deliberately choosing to not make the drinking time as pleasurable as possible. One has to ask-WHY??

@HULK HOGAN Any full strength beer will do that-alcohol's always the same thing whatever beer it's in. So may as well make it the beer that has the best taste goin' down.

Stubbies are a type of bottle, you wally. It's both a bottle and a stubby. If a beer has to be freezing to drink it then it's not a good beer, the cold is just hiding the flavour.

I really like VB. I'm from the US and cant really find it here. Went to Oz a few times back in the 90's and that's what everyone there drank. It was described to me as their version of Budweiser (I don't really drink Budweiser though). Anyway, VB is just a beer, and to me it's quite good. Maybe some of you purists or connoisseurs don't like it, but tons of regular people in Australia do

VB isn't a craft beer. It's a big brand Fosters/Lion Nathan beer. There's plenty of Australian craft beers out there if you look hard enough. but if you absolutely must try it it's gotta be cold, really cold.

  • @VintageTimeGems

I live in Victoria and this beers equates to cats piss. Carlton united breweries make this. This beer was a long time favourite during a time in Australia when there was very little choice (about 40 years ago). However, with the introduction so many imported beers and Australian Craft brewers, this Victoria Bitter should be feed to the pigs. It's still a long time favourite among bogans that have no sense of taste or class.

I don't know at what temperature you drank this Simon, but as its a lager it needs to beer drank icy cold straight from the fridge, the lack of haze/condensation on the glass suggested to me that you let this come to room. I have to admit that I was a regular drinker of this in my lager boy days, and whilst I found it slightly more palletable than most big name lagers, it's one that I would really only drink now if there wasn't anything else to drink.
I have a fair few friends and subscribers on my regular channel from Australia who just about bit my head off for remotely suggesting Fosters had anything to do with the country

Did you get the answer you wanted on who makes this? Both Fosters and VB are made by Carlton & United Breweries (CUB, which is owned by SABMiller, so now AB Inbev). They also make Carlton Draught...and many will argue they're all exactly the same beer just with different labels and bottle shapes. I tend to think the recipes differ ever so slightly, but apparently they're all now made using an ale yeast at 16C, so they're not even really lagers any more.

I remember years ago liking this.. Then I went to oz on my honeymoon and thought it was awful.. It was while I was there that I discovered hoppy pale ales. In particular it was 'Fat Yak pale ale' that moved me away from Belgian and German beer and on to discovering beers like punk IPA. Beers of Europe do occasionally have it and I'd say give it a try. Cheers

I totally understand, when i started drinking beer i was into ales and would gag at the taste of VB but the Australian heat turned me to start drinking 6 packs of light lagers. You gotta be an aussie to like that taste, most our beers are made by the fosters group and have that classic sweet aussie crip taste. Our beers are made with sugar and barley.

Bloke in front of me, rambling to all and sundry: I've been all around the world and VB is the best beer around, the most sessionable beer there is. (Then, to me:) What do you think mate?
Me: Umm, it's actually one of the few beers I won't drink.
Bloke, in apparent ego resuscitation: Well, YOU obviously haven't been all around the world.. (Wanders off enabling me to pay for something decent.)

  • @ballzac314
    @ballzac314 8 років тому +4

Yep, CUB makes all the megaswill in Australia: Mebourne Bitter, Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught, Fosters Lager, Crown Lager, etc.
Partly you might be objecting to the Pride of Ringwood. It's a pretty harsh bittering hop. I use it in some homebrews, but only in combination with some noble hops later in the boil (or in the hop back). I Think all these CUB beers us no hops other than pride of ringwood. I also suspect that many of these variations are just the same beer with a different label put on the bottle.
VB has laundry soap on the nose. The palate is slightly sweet malt, probably a pale domestic malt, with a bit of caramel colouring. The bitterness is very one dimensional, with no character to back it up.
If you're at a barbie and it's the only think on offer, it's perfectly drinkable as long as it's not over about 4C. But it's certainly not a beer drinker's beer.
The Aussie market is flooded with craft and international beers now, but several decades ago when that wasn't the case, those of us with taste buds were drinking Coopers Sparkling Ale. It's a pale ale. It's got a 'rustic' quality to it, like a good homebrew. It's probably bittered with Pride of Ringwood too, but it's got enough flavour to counteract any harshness. It's got a biscuit malt flavour, and a slight nuttiness. It has no significant hop character (no grassy, floral or piney flavours), but it has a slight fruitiness that may be from its yeast character. Writing that from memory, so that might not be 100% accurate, but it's ballpark.

It is a great beer, I dont care what anyone say`s. It is like a better quality Fosters which is also a good beer and here is why. They are made to be drunk cold, also compared to most stuff in the UK this has a very smooth finish and is very refreshing. It is way better then most english lagers and has a fond following. It is actually imported now and has a demand. Tesco used to sell it as did Majestic wine but what do they know? They sell to the mass wjho drink stuff like Kronenborg and think it`s good. Saying that I love this guy`s reviews and am suprised he did not like it, maybe it was not cold enough.

Damn good comment about what it would have tasted in 1854 too...

These big brewery's seem doomed to me, Craft Beer is growing at least 30% year on year with the big brewers in decline. Question is will they wake up too late to try and turn things around? Cheers guys.

Carlton Draught is the most popular Australian beer. However this does not indicate the quality of the beer, more so the availability on taps and the price.
As you might of noticed, Victoria Bitter needs to be drunk while the beer is super cold. It's flavour changes significantly with heat.

You're right Simon, it is "strikingly poor", but better then Fosters as you suggested at the beginning. VB is the dominant lager in Victoria and probably just lags behind Tooheys New in NSW. Castlemaine XXXX still rules the roost in Queensland. They're all as bad as each other. Thankfully there is enough craft beer around (and more and more all the time) to make avoiding this and the others fairly easy. Not sure how much of it (other than the ubiquitous and quite decent Little Creatures) will get to the UK though.

I remember when I lived in Australia someone giving this to me after I made a comment about their Fosters, he obviously thought this was far better. I actually think it's even worse. A truly horrible beer.

Drank a shit load of Craft and International beers but give VB the edge over all of them especially when on tap at the Pub .... going by here maybe it doesn't travel well but it's all good going from my mouth too my gut here in Stralia ....😀🇦🇺

I am Australian for over 10 years, and I would say its the best damn beer for me now. FYI, when I first tasted this, its exactly the same as in this review..., Other states apart from Victoria may have different opinions. But the Fosters story is right :)

15 years ago, I used to like this beer. Then the beer world suddenly changed, with all the micro breweries popping up and now I cant drink it. Awful. We've come a long way.

Oh man, we're sitting round the office laughing our pants off at this vid. If we were a big organisation, you'd expect it to go viral. Anyway, you're right on the money, you have to lick paint stripper before drinking that, as it's not fit for cleaning a barbie with. The recipe has certainly changed a lot, but it's been many, many years since it was even palatable. Fortunately we have a wide variety of craft beers in Oz, so there is no need to imbibe this substitute for syrup of ipecac. As for the origin, you're spot on the money as to this being the producer of Fosters.
Go grab some mouth wash, and I look forward to your next vid.

V.B. has got to be the worst liquid being sold as beer on the market here in Australia. Coming a close second has to be West End Draught both of these are alleged beers, both taste terrible. There are better beers on the market here but they are mainly from the craft brewery side if the industry. The mainstay breweries just churn out shite and the Aussie public buy it because it's cheap and it's cheap because it's fucking shite.

Vic is disgusting, as are all CUB beers. It was a bitter in 1854. CUB took over many of the independent breweries in Victoria which is where the various names of their products come from ie. Fosters, Melbourne, Carlton. They turned them into brand names for all their horrible lagers. The hop is Pride of Ringwood, which was bred from Pride of Kent. Coopers also use it to make their green and red ales which are okay beers, so the problem can't be just the hops. When I was young these lagers were about all you could get here in Melbs. Lets hope they are not planning the same move with their takeovers of several craft breweries in recent years. Of course, they are now part of the international big beer groups themselves. Are they Asahi, AB Inbev? Who cares? Who can keep up?
