I agree with this video but I have to applaud microsoft for having 16gb of ram as the baseline
It needs it. Apple can get away with having only 8 GB, Microsoft can’t.
They both need it. macOS is barely usable with 8gb as well.
Microsoft getting Arm and Base 16gb. Pushes Apple to improve better. Hopefully we see a bigger leap from m4-m5 and we get a base of 12gb
@@J-DubbOTB Mate, I have the 8GB M1 MacBook Air. It does everything I need it to do, and more. Yea, it may not be the fastest, but I never once thought "this is slow." Or "This is unusable". That is with having new Macs with the M3 chip for comparison. Really, the only reason I even need more than that is to future-proof the laptop for years to come.
It’s sad… we shouldn’t have to applaud them for that.
Competition is a good thing. If WoA becomes a powerful option then we all win here.
They said that with streaming services and Epic store. Look where we are now.
We need community driven FOSS to monopolize the market
Microsoft wants a Total Recall. Prepare for the Singularity. Resistance is futile!
There’s no way Linux users will ever accept that we can all win. They must win or we’re all stupid. There is one guy who switched from Linux to OpenBSD and you should see the smugness on his face. He can’t contain it.
@@TheSteveSteele yeah. Im tired of hearing this foss garbage being thrown left and right by people who pretend they know everything about business, economy and the world because their "ideology is better than everyone else".
Yes we've certainly seen examples of foss software being better than non foss software. But thats not all there is to it right?
Its funny to me how theres like so many videos about how someone is done with an os that keeps breaking on them so they're ready to move to an os that is broken by design.
But of course they aren't here to hear things out. They're only hear to show everyone their superiority complex. No point in raising an argument with them, they aint interested to listen.
@@TheHoonShow FOSS is important but it will never scale to the level that you want it too. Developers gotta eat.
Dude these skits are my favorite UA-cam videos of all time
He should create a channel of just the skits: Tailosive Skits combine both the EV and Tech skits
I used to hate them, but well… now I agree with you 😅
I always skip it
You are lying
Really?
Someone please do a compilation of all Drew’s skits one day

if apple decides to put 16gb min ram in their laptops the laptop war is over
Or at least cheaper upgrades.
As someone who changed from a m1 MacBook Air to a surface laptop 4 for my school, it’s basically just a windows MacBook, only a slower laptop that runs hotter. I really hope the surface 7 will be very good
Exactly! They had the quality but needed the power and efficiency, which the Xelite chips promise to add.
Long time Mac user going back to System 7. Windows 11 looks and feels just like a Mac. Even their Keynotes, or whatever they call them, play out just like an Apple Event. On the surface, (no pun intended), it’s hard to tell the difference anymore to be honest.
Does this mean it has a Hot Surface?
The Omega 13, Galaxyquest joke was outstanding!
Though I think the 'More power' of Tim 'The Toolman' Taylor might be even funnier.......
(who else remembers Home Improvements?)
What does the joke says? I didn’t get it
@@sumomaster5585 “the omega 13” is a reference to the movie Galaxyquest. It’s a machine that people think will either destroy everything or cause a 13 second jump to the past
@@Senshikaji I vaguely remember it, I just remember the neighbor over the fence and being genuinely creeped out by the intro as a child.
Some people abandoned Macs because of the intel processors performance but most of the user base remained the same. But when Macs got the better chips a huge amount of people actually switch to Apple machines.
When you innovate, you attract customers
Where are they? Market share of MacOS...(slightly) DECREASED on the last 3 years.
You seem to live in an alternative world.
@@jeanbaptistelabellefrom 2019-2022, Macs saw a 60% increase in market shares
@corvacopia market share decreased from 16.3% to 15,3%. But anyway, market share is for me again not mumy criteria of choice. The Mac has great chip but many people prefers / needs a tablet or pen or touch for some tasks. And iPadOS is still frustrating as much or even more Apple users because how it hampers so much the iPad. So I do not really care if Mac would have 10 or 85%, it would still not work as a tablet or touch or do not support pen or still lacking basic stuff.
@@jeanbaptistelabelle The Mac market share discussion have always been somehow controversial for whatever reason, even during Steve Jobs times (he mentioned some of it in his D3 interview). Some people have suggested that macs have reached 30% market share in some places (probably the US), some say that it has increased just so slightly, and some others say that it has decreased. But for me 2 things are clear:
1. The user base remains the same and will probably remain the same, because as Drew argued, people buy macs and apple devices in general because of the software (Jobs used to say that apple is a software company that just package that software in beautiful boxes), and 2. The introduction of the M chips took the industry by storm and will be forever remember even if its effect on mac sales (that was undeniable huge) start to water down.
Psst drew, there’s a USB A port in your tesla
Can’t wait for the Snapdragon X Elite Ultra Max X
That won't happen, they almost need the same amount of power cores to compete the smallest chip what the M1 Ultra had (M1 Ultra had 4x power cores/performance compared to basic M1, but X Elite need 12 power cores to compete those 4 power cores..) You won't see any chip with 48 power cores (because if 12 cores rival the basic M chip, than about 24 power cores need for M2 Max chip, and 48 power cores for the M2 Ultra..)
Xx__snapdragon-420__xX
Nah, I'd rather wait for Pro version of it
I switched from Windows to MacOS because Microsoft have been focused on turning Windows into an advertising platform rather than an operating system that just does what I want it to do.
You should do a windows challenge. That would be fun to watch 😂
In my opinion USB-A will always be used since it has become so ubiquitous. Like I do not see most keyboard or mice switching away from the included dongle not be USB-A anytime soon
Don't forget these tiny USB drives that hardly stick out. Very convenient because there's a lower risk of bending them.
7:33 “Commander, you are our last hope!”
I don’t want any arm chip until it can run EVERYTHING I use.
1:33 so snappy with your skit my man! It’s almost like you were talking about the Snapdragon! 😂
Please do an entire video as Tim Cook when you review the next iPhone. Would be video of the decade.
Snakey Sasquatch OMG!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂 Most excellent opening script. Thanks for the laughs and giggles
By Grabthar’s Hammer…. What a benchmark.
This is how I imagine the infinite Neos from Matrix Reloaded would interact with each other.
Always amazes me how the newer chips are always faster then the older chips ,

Holy $#!+ That opening skit was golden. Fawking killed me! 😂🤣
The initial part of your videos are hilarious, always surprising me and laughing at them 🤣🤣
also, snapdragon x elite is more dangerous to intel and amd than to Apple
Google pixels can seamlessly use the camera as the laptop cam...
Drew - what is your editing setup? MacBook Pro? Which model? and do you use an external monitor? Just curious
I'm one of the people that bought a Mac just for the M1 and I was only looking for a good ARM PC with windows to go back.
After 3 years with a Mac, I still can't handle Mac os and his multitasking.
So, yep, even if I've an Ipad and iPhone, i'm very considering to finally go back with windows.
7:34 I didn't get that one but time reversion from Code Lyoko increased X.A.N.A powers. I'm looking at you Siri. That's why you don't shut down or restart completely
I have to admit, I was amazed at the new Surface Pro 11 and its capabilities. I have been using Copilot and really like the productivity with it. I have a Surface Pro 7+ as well as an M1 Macbook Air (both have 16gb of Ram and 1 TB of SSD.. But I am really waiting to decide based on the results of WWDC and I may go iPad Pro, so we will see . . . .
Windows/ Android fan. I randomly saw this video pop up and thought it would be fun to see the diff perspective. I digged it! And appreciated / was entertained. Loved the humor / calling out both.
tried to paste some boxes to my wall with double sided tape but they keep falling, any recommendations?
i think they should try to bring back the surface studio with those chips it's such a cool design for a computer
That opening skit was pure entertainment 😂
Funniest Intro Ever. And so sarcastic, i like it . Thanks for your work
Omega 13? That's a hell of a ride
The intro was one of the funiest things I've seen this week
yea. you are correct. MacBook eco system is too strong
This must be the best intro i‘ve ever seen 😂😂
Wow! Your maxed out chip beats last year’s entry level chip. 🎉
Silly argument, you have to look at the prices. A Surface Laptop with Elite, 16GB RAM and 512 storage is cheaper than a the lowest tier M3 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM and 512 storage.
Completely agree. When I was laptop shopping a couple of years ago, I was shopping Chromebooks over Microsoft PCs. I eventually bit the bullet for a Mac but I’m done with Microsoft. I hate using them.
"driver install, crash, not loaded etc"
man this sounds like 1994 year for me
2024 windows much better if your hands come from right place
I always enjoy your content and love it!! Lmao Omega 13, love that people still use that!
7:35 ohhh that reference must be avenged. You know he used to be a Shakespearean actor? Had curtain calls and everything
I use my iPad extensively as a whiteboard for teaching. While it is great for this use, I sometimes think I'd like to have a device that combines the advantage of an iPad with a Macbook (not a tablet device, but a laptop one could use as a sketch pad, like the Surface Book). It wouldn't have to be specifically a Microsoft product, but some sort of Windows machine.
My main hesitation is I already know Good Notes works great for my use case on the iPad. It would take time to find some other software and learn how to use it (perhaps One Note), and I don't know in advance if it work as well. I might look into it over the summer break, when I have more time for experimenting.
the start to this video is incredible lmao
A great video putting things into perspective
I actually bought my MacBook Pro because I needed a Laptop with performance and battery life. For most of my use cases I don’t care about the OS but for some things I will probably enjoy it, when I can run Windows or a Linux natively on my machine and still have a battery. But this is probably something I am searching for in like 2030 😅
I'm a Windows user who isn't going for the Surface line up. They were always way over priced for what they are. I like being able to at least upgrade ram and storage when needed. I'd rather save some money and get a entry level gaming laptop. Battery life be damned.
Ssd is replaceable, and RAM is 16gb base unlike macbooks. I'm probably getting the Lenovo version since it's not expensive like the Surface.
if I want upgradeability and performance with the best bang for the buck then I just build my own PC, heck I can even build a hackintosh that slaps the shite outta M3 pro macs. Now if want portability then I'd rather buy a tablet that I can also use to remotedly connect to my PC on Win11. At the end of the day, Apple only boils down to a walled golden garden full of fanboys lol
@@TCHICKIBRAXD not really man, I've tried that life of remote accessing my desktop on a 13" screen and it wasn't fun, especially when internet wasn't great. Some people need maximum portability (so good battery life to not need to be plugged to a wall like most gaming PCs) while also having a device powerful enough to do a serious work on (not a tablet or an iPad). For these people Apple's macbooks since the M1 have been the best devices around, and now we will finally have Windows options that really compete. This new Surface is finally a real macbook equivalent in the windows side, bonus points for still having a replaceable SSD and lower prices too.
Not switching but I am definitely buying an ARM PC as a secondary device for the possibility to do gaming on a laptop with good battery life
On UA-cam I’m seeing MacBook killer, iPhone killer and iPad killer etc. Unless they can outperform Apple’s leading performance per watt on an SoC then it’s not even going to come close. You can say “we have this feature that Apple’s doesn’t” but features aren‘t paramount. It’s like the Justin Intel ad. Ohh, we have this laptop with this feature but fail to point out that all of those laptops are outperformed by Apple Silicon in benchmarks.
What you do not get is that performance is just one metric. Look at the M4 iPad. Still useless for plenty of tasks because of the limitations of the software.
The Mx Mac are great laptop...limited by their form factor and lack of touch and pen support.
I do envy M chips but no Apple device is 2024 is able to do what I could 12 years ago on my first hybrid like for instance developing photo in Capture One Pro on a tablet (no, nothing compare on the iPad yet).
I think this is less of a MacBook killer in the sense that it will make people already in the apple eco system switch, but more so in the sense that it will make the switch to mac less attractive to windows users. The battery life alone was a major reason for many windows users to at least eye MacBooks enviously, if not outright switch, because there was just nothing on the market that came close on the windows side of things. Now that there’s a windows alternative that holds its own, lots of people who would have at least considered switching, can just stay on their established workflows and get the same benefits.
So it will stabilise the windows market share in the laptop space, after the upset of the last three years Iimagine.
It’s basically it, I really like the new Surface Laptop and all these Windows on ARM thing would make Apple improve Macs even more!! But I’ll probably stick with Mac, it’s my personal choice
Choice is great, and more ARM chips are good for competition. I switched out of the Apple ecosystem. Had an iPhone, MB Pro 16 and iPad pro. I get why some people like it, but I never managed to like MacOS. Especially not after Windows 11. I might be a weirdo, but that's just how it is. But that being said, I have recommended MB Airs for people wanting a premium laptop for a while now, due to the ARM chips inside. Now I'm waiting for the Surface Pro.
Well.. a guy with a wall full of empty boxes of Apple products... says it all.
"do you have games?" Ladies and gentlemen, we got 'em.
Reminder: people don’t buy Macs to game.

Lastly, Apple’s GPTK2 (Game Porting Toolkit 2) is in beta right now with Sequoia and it added AVX2 and Ray Tracing. Mac gaming seems pretty solid from here on out 😎

I’m glad that Microsoft and Windows users can now get a bunch of the benefits of an M series MacBook. I have no intention of switching back however. I just can’t quit the way my Apple ecosystem works together (even if it’s not as seamless or bug free as it used to be). I just couldn’t stand all the bloatware and driver nonsense with windows. I love my XBOX, but it also doesn’t sell me on or endear me to Microsoft or their stuff. Also where’s my Beryllium Sphere.
About the benefits for Windows users, you should wait the actual product release, instead of blondly accept every marketing team created hype. (Just based on the Microsoft made diagrams the Surface works on about 5°C hotter and it's 7dBm louder, so still overheating more when it has a cooler..? In that case the efficiency is not that good.. because that is only possible if it's consume way more power, which drain the battery faster.. also back in the past 4-5 months Qualcomm also provided some leaked data, and the battery life sheet first line "it's up to 40% more battery life in Office 365", wow is the Word and Excel was that power hungry..?
There is nothing particular about Apple ecosystem. You can have plenty of other reasons. Buy ecosystem is NOT one of them.
I’m just happy about the surface pro tbh. Glad it’s gonna have at least m1 level performance and great battery life without getting hot
have they shipped yet?
This aged like Plutonium
It depends, can I play my Windows 98 version of access and allies?
Every company I have worked for have used windows. Since I first heard of windows on Arm I have dreamed of a future where my company gives us a laptop that has all day battery life and no heat like my IPad.
10 years and my iMac never let me down, only problem was that photoshop was not supported anymore, saw the struggle everyone around me had with window in those 10 years I got a new apple again. now I wanted something portable and sometimes working in dusty places I really liked the idea of a fan less MacBook Air.15" and with the 16 gig add 512 ssd it is the perfect machine for me.
I feel like battery life is a big part of choosing a laptop.
I'll probably get one, because my workflow involves using both Windows and MacOS. It is not going to replace my MacBook, but it will very likely sit next to it.
Fighting for a company that does not are about you is the most ridiculous thing in the world. Pick what s best for you. Period!!
never had a update issue on window
I switched from windows to a macbook with m1 about a year ago. I switched because of the atrocious battery life on my old laptop (an hour if lucky), and just general improvements from a higher end laptop.
I thought I'd get used to MacOS and any downsides in the hardware.
Hardware: Honestly My only real annoyances are lack of touchscreen, NumberPad, and USB A port (I've lost many adapters) and some keyboard differences. I got used to all this pretty quick even though it is still occasionally annoying.
MacOS: I thought I'd get used to it and once I was it would feel the same as windows. But I still absolutely hate it. Yeah it's more stable and has some other benefits, but it has so many little annoyances that make no sense. It feels like I'm being treated like a child when it won't let me do what i want without some sort of weird work around.
I'd love to switch back to windows, but I'm going to wait to see how good it it is and if prices will be coming down. I'm hoping that Microsoft's contract with Qualcomm expiring will mean we can get bootcamp
The most frustrating thing about Mac that might drive me back to windows is that Mac excel is inferior. VBA, pivots, and useless fast keys. I just work far faster and more easily in the windows version. And every time I create a document in word or PowerPoint the fonts and formatting are messed up when my colleagues open them on their Windows machines. Parallels is shyte too. Laggy as hell.
I was thinking of getting the galaxy book version on if I leave Apple and move to Samsung. But I’m most likely going to stay for the 16series and more
“Do you have games” 🤣
Damn that confrontation during the intro was riveting! 😠😠
Dude I almost forgot about the Omega 13! I haven’t heard any mention of it in years!
It already has more than enough performance especially when unplugged, they just needed it to be faster than a plugged in laptop, so X plus, and X regular will be fine for Linux and Windows users.
I only come here for the intro skits!🤣😆😝
Finally someone with a real comment on the subject
Holy shit. Best sketch ever 😂😂😂
if you look at from the perpective these are not macbook killers these are IPAD pro killers. If you want a device that can do what an ipad can't.
Not only is this guy handsome and well built, but damn good point about the unreliability of windows, commenting on my brand new M3💅
I’m happy for windows users. It sounds like the performance is there….the interesting thing will be battery life…and with my windows machines….will the battery completely drain when I toss the laptop in my bag overnight…
I have localsend and so do you! :D
I switched to Mac because of the chip... I wanted the best of the best, and the M1 MacBook Air was a great deal. All my apps ran on Mac, so that is what got me switching to the Mac.
7:33 IS THAT A GALAXY QUEST REFERENCE
By grabther’s hammer it is
Finally!!! a Mac Fan Boy I thoroughly enjoyed listening to---and he made good points too! Especially that, in the end, people are tied to the OS and the ecosystem.
Me? Owner and early adopter of a Surface Pro 1, 4, 7, and who knows? Maybe soon a Surface Pro 11.
Any Galaxy Quest quote deserves a heart!
Will it make most Mac users switch? No, probably not. But on the other end I just got a MacBook Air for the first time because I was tired of my heavier windows laptop with worse battery life. I do like the little thing. It takes no space in my bag, build quality is great, and I don’t even have to think about plugging in until I’m going to bed. It’s so freeing to not have to eye every classroom or coffee shop or airport lounge for a plug. It’s really great hardware.
However I’m hitting a bit of a wall needing to re-learn a bunch of programs and shortcuts, and I still main a Windows desktop for gaming and my work is done on Linux (I just remote into them during the occasional travel). I find it’s taking quite a while to get naturally comfortable with a third OS/interface and still fumble with the wrong key combos occasionally.
If Windows can get these Qualcomm laptops right they might not snatch many Mac customers, but they sure would have taken away my reason for wanting to try a Mac in the first place.
Your right the only reason i want them compare to mac is the way better support for linux better battery life then older windows pcs and good preformance for the x plus chip in lower price then x86 64 pc in this preformance level
The skit made me laugh
no matter what is inside when the outside sucks - why does literally everybody , except Apple, put a row of tiny ESC-Function keys on their laptops? These keys are unusable in long period of time but they are no less important than other keys for a lot of people who actually work on their laptops.
I like 1 or 2 USB A ports on my laptops. I can always transfer files via a USB stick. Especially in the IT department. Also, great for wireless mouses 🐁.
Good question (as ever, thanks) - going back to Windows? Reminds of that great Beatles number ‘Back in the USSR’ - you only want to be there if you don’t know any better 🤓
Well. People need windows bcs they make money other than photography, making youtube video or other things like those. Things, you know like corporate business, engineering, constructions 5:55
It's been years but strangely this difference never settled. Hmm.
While software is definitely a big part of it, I know personally I was going to switch to Linux and the lightness and battery life of the M2 MacBook Air kept me with Mac and until there’s a laptop that can compete on those areas while keeping at least remotely comparable performance, that’s likely to stay the case regardless of software
Aah the classic windows user debate on the fast processors (they said) which will being ended up into very unoptimized devices anyway.
I agree with the explanation, at the end of the day, users want everything works fine. Just fast hardware configurations is not enough, optimization is a must
Zen 5 with 8core and 16CU "HX 370" is out in July. See you there.
there is localsend on all devices. basically airdrop, when on wifi & bt.
not the same as airdrop, but it's close.
i'm using gnome btw
I agree in most cases, but I will say I was looking at the MacBook Air for my travel laptop because of the battery life alone. I had used MacBooks for almost a decade but switched to a Windows/WSL setup a couple years ago and greatly prefer it in almost every way. Now I don't have to switch from my usual Windows/WSL setup to get the battery life (Assuming the real world reviews confirm the marketing claims). So, in a way, these may take away potential MacBook Air customers, but they definitely aren't stealing any current Apple customers, no.
I bought Lenovo Yoga 32 gbt and 1 tb ssd for only 1300€ that is amazing , still it has copilot plus many features top of the line without paying extras what Apple charges even that i have all Apple Macbook pros everywhere and iPhones and all that stuff but i think for Windows this is the moment everything will go in the right place eventually , worth the try anyway , love the competition
😅 Who wants to see Drew flex 💪 more in his skits?! I played it 5 times 😉
Windows has Quick Share for Android phone, airdrop is a proprietary Apple standard, iMessage is also proprietary to Apple, so unless Apple wants, it cannot be ported over to Windows. iMessage and Air Drop arguments are worthless as these are two different ecosystems.
usb-a rant went hard
