Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I always enjoy hearing your perspective. This may be slightly off topic, but hear me out. It ties in at the end. I know that in the minimalist space there is often a discussion about “spending on experiences instead of stuff” but I have found much greater value in spending on stuff to enhance experiences I have every day rather than, for example, tickets to an event. I have bought beautiful art to enhance the experience of sitting in my living room. I have bought more wooden spoons to streamline the process of cooking and washing up. I have bought a beautiful, expensive coat that I fall in love with a little more each time I wear it. In my personal experience, spending money (even a LOT of money) on something to enhance a regularly occurring experience that currently sucks is always worth it
Oh yes Erika, I totally hear what you're saying and I love your perspective on this. I think that's why things like the art and some of the kitchen utensils are on the list.
YES!! the day to day is life too! the small exceptional moments, like travel and concerts and such are moments. but our lives are in the small day to day experiences. love this line of thought!
Super agree, and the truth is sometimes spending on everyday items even if you don't "need" them is worth so much grief in the long run. I'm about to buy a pantry, which is going to make my kitchen sooo much more pleasant, because there won't be STUFF just sitting on every available surface lol. And another recent purchase that made my life easier: a nice pair of gloves with the pads on the fingers so I can still use my phone. It really is the little things!
Could you borrow a suitcase for your trip? I don't own a suitcase but my mom has one or two and I always borrow hers! We don't travel often so I don't want to invest the $100+ to use it infrequently and store it in my apartment. I'm team borrow all the way
I have thought about doing this Kylie! I haven't made my mind up for sure because I have been looking to upgrade to a suitcase to make my driving trips easier too. If this one trip is the only one I plan to take this year than borrowing is likely the better option.
I love your videos, and I have a suggestion for your utensils. Thrift stores like Salvation Army, good will etc. always have great house ware. I guarantee you could find your wisk and potato masher for way under your budget.
I second this!! I've also found some really cool things from Value Village-type stores, but like Shawna they're pretty far from me so I can only really go when I have access to a car
Great video! I honestly waited years to get “the camel winter coat” that is literally everywhere in capsule wardrobes etc. and is to be an investment”. As someone who took the plunge, it just hasnt been as satisfying as I felt it was going to be for the three years i waited to buy it. I feel more joy from my bright red wool coat that is unique and makes me stand out/always gets compliments. Something that just doesnt happen with a “classic camel coat”.
Buy the frame. That’s a memory. That’s important. Things to make your life better than “disposable items” like clothes or makeup. Clothes and make up are more fun than a salad spinner but you may actually need that spinner more. It doubles as a large bowl. A strainer for washing fruit or veggies. But multi use kitchen items will last forever and so worth it.
Yesterday I was at the mall and realized that I was walking towards Starbucks. I didn't need coffee, nor did I really want it... I just wanted something to do while I was perusing through the mall (and I'm not even a huge fan of Starbucks anyways). Normally I would've just purchased and be on my merry way but I stopped myself because the purchase would not have been intentional; it's not like I really wanted or needed the coffee... so why was I gliding my way to the Starbucks so passively? Good to catch yourself in those type of situations/moments...
I tend to not buy things that would make my life easier as well. It can be a problem. I also could use some bras but hesitate since I am a very petite size, AA to AAA cup that basically have to be ordered form expensive, specialty shops online. I should probably just do it one of these days! Have you considered checking thrift stores for some of the kitchen items that you need? They tend to have a ton of whisks, mashers, and storage solutions for very, very inexpensive.
I can imagine the difficulty of bra shopping if you have to speciality order your items. I hope you have the opportunity to do it this year and get to relish in some new bras that fit amazing!
@@shawnaripari Thanks! I probably will. I have at least one that need to go into retirement as well. It is difficult but it used to be MUCH harder to find things that fit. I either had to buy ones that were too large or buy ones made for pre teens!
Loved your video! I’m wanting some good, quality bedding. Mine is looking tired, but I want to hold out for just the right look/feel/aesthetic. Bedding can be pricey, so I think I’m going to purchase it a piece at a time. 😀
that has been on my radar too. The snaps on my duvet cover came off a long time ago and i never fixed it. I've been wanting to upgrade but also thinking of upgrading my VERY old mattress too. Before I buy new bedding I think getting the mattress comes first (especially if I need deeper sheets or bigger duvet to accomodate. Good quality bedding is a great purchase in my book
Libraries can often get you a book through the interloan service. If you like ereaders, librarians are constantly telling me at the library checkout that they have way more ebooks (free for a months loan) to take out than hard copies, which you can loan by going onto the library computer or loan remotely by logging in at home and downloading a link. Also, if a book is fairly new release, then you can fill out a request for buying the book form. 80% of the time they have purchased the book I suggested, and they reserve it for you so you are the first reader. At college/university for specialist books your professor may have to request it on your behalf and I've done that before too.
Hey Shawna! Just getting into the video and wanted to mention that for airlines you usually are allowed a carry on in addition to a “personal item” for no charge, so you would likely be able to bring both your duffel bag AND backpack! That might allow you enough space for a week when you visit your brother 😊
I've been looking for a lightweight trenchcoat for spring/fall for a couple of years now, but haven't come across one I like. Generally, there are a couple of clothing items I'd like to replace with another item, but I'm not rushing the process because what I have is just fine. I've never used skillshare. Maybe just get a free trial month? With any service that has monthly payment options, I really just buy it when I actually have time to use it to its fullest potential instead of going for the yearly discounted payment option. Over the last few years, I've only ever paid for three months of Netflix, whenever I had time to just watch a bunch of shows in a row. I've bought lots of kitchen utensils at thrift stores. One item that would be useful to me, but I just haven't purchased for years is a rolling pin, not because I don't want to spend the money but because I don't have space for one. They're always too long for my drawers (and I don't have enough space in my drawers anyway).
Good point about not buying the yearly membership. I don't think I could ever do that for something I've never tried before 😂 In December I was thinking about getting a rolling pin too. I thought I needed them to make cookies and I knew one of my goals this year was to make Ravioli, which you most definitely need a rolling pin for. I never got one because I had no place to put it. What, am I going to keep it in the closet? That'd almost equivalent to not having one. If I make Ravioli I'm just gunna borrow one. It's not even about the money here just the impracticalty
as ive moved away from being impulsive while doing by first no buy year this year, I've shifted allll the way to the other side, where I'm riddled with indecision! I'm soooo fearful of regret that its becoming actually very difficult for me to spend ( on normal daily things as you mentioned!) funny how that can happen. hoping for moderation, and healthy, valued spending!
Love your video as always!! I agree there are reasonable good or helpful purchases. Some also benefit others around you. That's part of finding a balance. I don't think extremes of any direction are healthy or wise in the end nor will they lead to happiness or content. Its not easy to find the balance that works for you.
At some point after looking at art I'd carted around with me from place to place for almost 2 decades without ever putting it up, I decided that I'm not really an art person. Nice framing is expensive, affordable framing (Ikea) looks cheap and TBH I bought most of the pieces because they looked cute at the time and I was in a spendy mood, not because they were particularly meaningful. Also, I suck at hanging things straight and I hate dusting frames. So, my personal stamp on my condo is the absence of a personal stamp. 😁
and I feel that about not knowing how long you're going to live in a place! I thought I would have moved again by now so haven't really made the place we're living now our own tbh
One thing I will remove from my life now is cheap entertainment. It has not help me find what i want to do in my life and it just makes things worse. I want to invest in having converations with people about what I like and discuss topics with them. This is very hard for me as a shy and quet introvert. I like stories so I am going to read more fantasy books. I hope to cut out youtube, instagram, reddit, netflix for the most part and replace it with other thing that I like and are also very easy and relaxing. Stuff and busyness also has a way of cluttering your mind.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I always enjoy hearing your perspective.

😆 I just commented the same thing! Also the vintage ones tend to be better quality than a lot of the new stuff out there.
great suggestion! I live pretty far from any thrift stores (roughly an hour), which is why I rarely go, if ever. Maybe its time to take the trek
@@shawnaripari Oh wow. That is pretty far away!

Yes! I love when you catch yourself in the moment. That doesn't always happen so that's amazing! And, thanks for letting me know!

My experience with packing for a trip: take half the clothing and twice the money.

yes, i totally agree with what you're saying. Finding the balance between the buying all the things and buying nothing is a challenge.
The biggest things I'm planning on buying are a new laptop (a macbook), one or MAYBE two pairs of sneakers and a big down jacket for next winter.
