I deleted my Instagram account as I felt that every time I’d scroll on there an add would come up and I would go to the online store. I wouldn’t necessarily purchase but I was always window shopping.
Now I’ll make a list of things I would like to buy and only purchase when I have the money. I currently have only 3 “unnecessary” things I’d like to buy and for me that’s progress 😊

I like... don't even go shopping anymore... this video probably be good for all my relatives... lol. But they won't watch it. I ask myself these questions so often I can't even go shopping anymore. On the other hand I really appreciate the gifts my family gets me because I don't buy myself things anymore lol.

I can totally relate! I've come to the point that I hate shopping. The things I'm gifted from family are very small items like a bracelet or a pair of earrings, and I'm glad things like that aren't bulky or take up space. I've been a minimalist for a year now.

We really do need to give ourselves grace, stores like Target and all online shops are strategically arranged based on data driven algorithms and floor plans to attack our human weaknesses - but we can fight back! Thanks for these super helpful tips!

Wow.. for the first time in my life I read the comments on UA-cam channel and I am very impressed how supportive and nice are all the messages. North America has a educated population, unfortunately in Romania and other countries from Europe, people are very rude and critisezing everything that an youtuber will say, even the ideas are really good and useful. I am so happy that I moved to Canada and enjoy polite people. That's really a great quality of a developed society and I wish to become a legal citizen. From inside I already feel true Canadian and I am really grateful for everything that North America is offering me. I support minimalism, sustainability/ zero waste, self growth, multiculturalism, diversity, food from all over the world, exposure to so many cultures... the list is long.

These are some great tips Ashlynne 👍 I love an acronym that Lydia Senn spoke about on one of her videos, it's the HALT method, don't buy anything when you're Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired, it's so true across all the shopping categories, especially not buying groceries when you're hungry, I've learnt that lesson the hard way 😉

All great tips. Lately Etsy has been my nemesis. In the name of supporting the little businesses it's become too easy to order things. Some were replacements, others were unnecessary. I recently repainted some frames and put new photos in them. I already had the paint, it was therapeutic, and gave a couple of spots an updated look. Yes, boredom can be costly.

Great tips. One thing I do to help prevent me from overspending is to shop at our local stripped down grocery store. It only carries the essentials so it really limits our ability to buy the things we dont need. Bonus is that it's only 2kms away so we can bike or walk which also limits how much we drag home.

After 20 years of basically just staying home, or within 4 hours of home, I have decided it’s time for me to start visiting the places on my bucket list (I will NEVER consider travel a waste of money). I have been out of control on Amazon and at TJMaxx buying travel and capsule wardrobe “essentials”. I really needed to see this and will definitely be implementing some of these tips. Thanks so much!!

    • @NineTailedFate

Hearing someone say 'within 4 hours of home' as if that's not massively far away from home is insane to me. I'm in the UK away 20 minutes is far away from the house. 4 hours is a once a year holiday destination, and most people will opt for something closer.

    • @maelstrommel

@@NineTailedFate The UK is on my travel bucket list, as well!! With my work, I can travel up to two hours, one way, if I'm visiting one of the offices I manage, so I guess four hours doesn't seem that much to me.

I love the idea of doing a no spend month! It would be really interesting to see how many times I have to avoid going to places like the dollar store where I tend to overspend often. I also never thought about thinking more long term about certain items, so I'm definitely gonna try doing that more. :)

When I buy clothes I pick 3 stores to go to. I try on what I'm thinking of, carry the item whilst checking in the store. I have a budget and pick the number of say tops I planned to buy from what I tried on in those stores. I also write a list of what I'm intending to buy and think about it for say a month or so - avoids impulse buys.

Great tips Ashlynne! I also use a few of these strategies and questions. In addition to shopping with a list, I try to force myself to physically carry all items I'm considering purchasing around the store (whether in my arms or a tote bag). This strategy helps me to literally lighten the load as I get tired as a final criteria/question to determine if I will buy it. I have to follow this strategy in particular at secondhand shops & thrift stores but also use it when shopping for necessities or a couple grocery items at retail stores.

I do something related. There's a mall within reasonable walking distance from my home. When I need something, I try to walk there whenever possible (unless I need to do a sizable haul of groceries, for example). That limits what I can buy since I have to be able to comfortably carry it home.

One baby step- I recently gathered all of my MANY candles into a basket and made a pact with myself (and told my family for accountability) that I will not purchase any new candles until that entire basket is burned through. My weaknesses are sales (when I see that I can get something much much cheaper than it originally was) and different Facebook kids' second hand clothing groups.. My daughter has so many clothes, but still when I see something nice that someone sells for a good price, I just buy it. Im now considering leaving from those groups for a while..
But this whole year I have been writing down all the things I buy. That gives me a good overview of my spending habits every month.
I also have a wishlist and "things I need to buy" list. A lot of times when I want something, instead of going out and buying it, I just, wrote it to my wishlist.. And after a while I realize I don't want it to bad anymore.. And I have been able to delete quite many things from my wishlist over time 😊😉

  • @lehuamk

I realized that I shop online for clothes that I barely wear now because I don't find it valuable to me, so why I even bought it? The honest truth, I didn't see my body fitting in with the clothes I see, only on the model and I was thinking it will make me look like that way, but I knew that every woman has a different shape of body so it wouldn't look the same on me, which it is sad to views on clothes like that. Waste of money can also be caused by being manipulated by sellers or companies that makes us think or catches our attention to buy it.

I'm a softie for thrifting. In my head, I justify purchasing things I dont need just because it is cheaper than full price. What has helped is to set a larger, aspirational goal. Trying to pay off our house is a much better decision than a excessive piece of clothing or trinket.

I like the idea of doing a no spend month! I’ve done it a few times successfully, and avoided many impulse purchases or even suspended regular household purchases for a month, but then the next month I treat myself to a few things and/or need to restock household items. Then it just feels like I’m back where I started! I guess the more times I do a no spend month I’ll see the benefits.

I really think that groceries are a trouble spot for me. As a toddler mom it seems most of the time I am eating 1 or 2 meals a day. Therefore when I do our bi-monthly grocery haul I am usually running on fumes or between the 2nd and 4th store, bc I am price shopping in these crazy inflation times. So even if I start off well, I may be starving by the end...
or at the walmart or target superstores when you get distracted when you go from the foods toward checkout. Not the like magazines gum or candy, but the sections on the way out of the stores.

I needed that. It’s a topic that people don’t talk about often. My problem is not the impulse buying of unnecessary things, but that it’s chaotic. I want to save money and plan expenses. And a no-buy-week or month might help to restart.
And often there are deeper issues behind impulse buying. So ask yourself: why do I want to buy all this? How do I hope it will make me feel? And how do I feel before I do impulse shopping? What feelings are there?

In my opinion, watching videos abroad, there are many stores where things are super cheap, and that's why people buy things they don't really need. In our country (Estonia), things are not cheap at all, and that's why there is no temptation to buy things just for the sake of beauty.

The tips of “avoiding stores, deleting apps” and “trying a no-spend challenge” seems a bit like the dieting mentality that can end up causing feelings of deprivation and then bingeing. I wonder if those methods have long term success? From my experience, they didn’t help me for very long until I fell back into my spending habits. I think the other advice of bringing your attention to why you’re buying it, what is your mood, and do you need it is a more effective way to impact spending habits.
Ive also fallen victim to returning impulse buys but then doing “girl math” and buying other items because i feel like i got my money back from the return. 🤦‍♀️

After a while, you get your use out of it then you have to eliminate it. Trash or toilet, its all the same. Everything changes and everything passes.

One of the things I do Is factor in a category in my budget for treats. Right now I allot $25/month. I use the money any way I choose and since I've budgeted for it, I feel zero guilt about using it. I take out the $25 in cash. I can use it for a latte once a week or spend it all at once on a manicure. Knowing that I have money I can spend on little things to make me happy limits my desire to impulse buy. If I blow through the $25 in the first week of the month, I am mentally trained to know that little treats are not in the table until the next month. It's become a habit.
