In regards to Robert De Niro, I’ve always found one of his best and most underrated performances to be King of Comedy. One of the few times in his career where I feel he really played against type, and I thought he absolutely killed it. I wish he took on more roles akin to that one
Will Smith has been coasting off the same persona for over 20 years. He's got some good movies in there, no doubt but nothing I would call especially challenging.
My picks for overrated actors: - Paul Rudd (he's exactly the same in every movie and just not interesting to watch, no variety, just playing the same goofball over and over again) - Bradley Cooper (at first I didn't mind him in movies, but at one point he got this idea that he's going to show everyone that he's "an artist" and now he just comes across as pretentious snob) - Emma Watson & Jenna Ortega (I really don't get why so many people are obsessed with them: they're exactly the same in every movie and so painfully bland) - Pete Davidson (I can't explain, but his presence just annoys me. It's one of those loud and obnoxious people you meet at the party and immediately want to go home) - Seth Rogen (his entire schtick is "I'm a bearded manchild that smokes pot, watches porn and curses a lot, because saying f*ck six million times in one minute is funny")
Good list. But I think, Bradley Cooper is a very good actor. Jenna is young. She is still learning her craft. She wouldn't be popular and appeal to young people if she was bland.
Bradley Cooper the person is pretty pretentious and annoying, but in what I’ve seen of him he’s a very good actor and he’s got good range. He can go from American Sniper to A Star is Born to any of the comedies he’s been in, and he’s always really good.
I think that people should also take into account that these actors are paid workers and the people hiring them want a specific product. I remember a Christopher Walken statement when asked why he played creepy guys when he really didn’t care for it. Paraphrased “you know, you do something and you do ok with it, you get certain types of offers…and it’s nice to work.”
I agree. George Clooney is, from what I understand, one of the richest actors in Hollywood. Women seem to love him. I personally think he is okay but seem to have an aura around him like he is one of the top actors of all time. Which I just don't see. I like some of his movies.. But to me he is more of a star than an actor.
The problem with trying to rate "Overrated" is that many of them, like DeNiro is that they did good work early and fell into a dependable groove where they just repeat themselves. My nom is Leo DiCaprio. I know that if he has to do an emotional scene, he's going to do the same scrunchy face he's used for decades. I think this is largely an American problem too. The English grind their way through drama schools doing Shakespear and low-budget productions so they've got a wide variety of roles under their belts before they hit and seem better able to adjust their performances to the character, instead of adapting the character to their abilities. DeNiro just reads his lines anymore, where you watch someone like Tony Hopkins in "Westworld" and even though he's not doing much physically, he uses inflection, pauses, subtle changes in facial expressions and gestures to convey a character watching your every move. DiNiro should be ashamed he's coasting on his rep instead of challenging his skills.
I don't think Ewan McGregor is overrated because I'm not sure he's rated high to begin with. Not a slam, because I like him. But it's not like he's received a bunch of awards or accolades.
That's true, but prequel fans talk about him like he's the greatest actor who ever lived, and with that "community" getting increasingly vocal in recent years I think that's why people say he's overrated now.
@@HOTD108_he was critically acclaimed until the prequels. Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, Velvet Goldmine. He always made offbeat movies like the Pillow Book. I don’t remember anything about it besides he showed peen and made love to an old Japanese man. He’s great though. Big Fish? C’mon!
Oh i totally disagree about De Niro. His range is an underrated part of his appeal. Compare King of Comedy to Taxi Driver to Heat to Joker to Cape Fear to Killers of the Flower Moon. I actually think his performance in Heat is incredibly underrated.
He was brilliant in Heat. The problem they're missing with De Niro is simply age imo, he made all his great stuff when he was young and threw in everything when nobody was really doing the starving themselves or gaining tons of weight etc, really immersed himself. You can't really do that forever and I think he just wanted bits of work for his bank balance in his later years.
I'll concede that the later stretch of De Niro's career is disappointing but I'd say that's the case with most actors of his generation. His 'big four' with Scorsese. Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy all in under a decade is one of the all time great actor / director streaks. Add Godfather II and Deer Hunter in that same stretch alone puts him up there with the best to ever do it. All due respect, saying Noodles is similar to Travis Bickle is insane. Bickle is a dude who is delusional doesn't understand social norms; Noodles is a street guy who steps over whoever (especially in the films most horrifying scene) but still expresses a sense of disillusionment with the world he fits in and these aspects are communicated through the performance. The two don't maneuver scenes or interact with other characters the same way at all.
I have to admit I didnt even watch "King of Comedy", but I think what you also have to mention is 1. Godfather 2 2. The Deer Hunter 3. Taxi Driver which are among the best performances of all times on par with the movie raging bull she mentioned. I could name up to 10 performances that are so far beyond the average Oscar winners, there are imo no words for it. If I had to take a pick of the greatest actor of all times (I am aware that its highly subjective and also could change depending on your window which movies you watched) I would pick him.
Wahlberg is literally one of the worst actor's I have ever seen. He gets praise for basically nothing. Outside of Shooter and the Departed he's awful. Max Payne, Transformers, Brothers, Mile 22, Pain & Gain etc just 🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 acting performances by him.
I think the comments about Robert de Niro being where he is because he is Martin Scorsese's friend are unfair. In Godfather II his presence is absolutely electric every time he's on screen.
@@Jantonov1 Dude there're so many fkin movies of his with so many varied characters, people just don't take their time to see any of the non-Scorsese ones.
@@Jantonov1 Did Taxi Driver not happen.Nobody seems to be mentioning that film and last time I checked the acting was absolutely amazing. Guess I'm crazy and DeNiro's no good lol
@@harlanginsberg7269 Oh, he's genius in Taxi Driver. I think King of Comedy shows how far he can go as an actor. Rupert is such an obnoxious schlob. Travis is quiet and roiling like a number of his performances.
Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, Casino, Cape Fear, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, wildly different characters and de niro is perfectly rated for the masterclass of performance he delivers when its serious.
I’m divided about DeNiro. Yes he was a tendency or playing himself and some of his characters seem exchangeable, specially in the 2000s he lost a lot of his drive. BUT when his was at his best he was unstoppable: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Once Upon a Time in America, Frankenstein, Cape Fear, Goodfellas, Casino, Heat, The Deer Hunter, among many.
He doesn't have likeable or human traits. Totally miscast in the Godfather as he was nothing like the character of Marlon Brando who played the same older character with complexity, sensitivity and emotion. Totally different people.
Just to be clear he’s never “played himself.” He is in no way a tough guy. He’s a theatre kid through n through that excelled at tough guy rolls so much that he started to believe he was one.
I'd put Bradley Cooper as one of my choices of overrated actors. You can tell he's convinced he's an amazing thespian and it comes through with all his recent performances.
He was terrific in Licorice Pizza and Dungeons and Dragons and I genuinely think that should be his brand. Alonso Duralde said something like "he's a character actor cursed with the face of a leading man" and I couldn't agree more
I like Nicholson but he's not at the level of De Niro, Pacino etc for me. Because he too often strays into cartoonish. Take The Departed, his villain is a complete cartoon, never feels remotely like a real person. @@Starkardur
Walken was an absolutely phenomenal actor before he became a punchline. People forget just how great he was in dramatic roles like _The Deer Hunter,_ _Catch Me If You Can,_ _The Dead Zone,_ and many others.
De Niro deserves his acclaim. Yes he’s phoned it in before, but his body of work is more diverse and amazing than most actors of his caliber, especially more than Ford, Damon, and Tommy Lee Jones.
@@lioneldemun6033 I understand your question because he didn't make a masterpiece since 30 years ago. In a recent interview he said after his 50s, he was exhausted,he didn't prepare anymore, and he was the king of preparations. Other centers of interest like business and politics... He just gave up his cinema's ambition. Today, you see him on talk shows, younger no way!!! He's a boomer cliché, the establishment figure. What's remaining is his filmography before he mid90s. Twenty chefs d'oeuvres no less!
Rupert Pupkin! Watch Taxi Driver and King of Comedy back to back to understand the range. Same role played completely differently. Deniro is great in Flowers. Yes - he suffers from quantity, I wish he didn't, but there is no denying the the quality of many of the performances.
Watch his entire oeuvre, rather than just the two extremes, and you'll see far too much of the same thing. For someone so highly rated you wouldn't expect such a chasm between best and worst performances, nor so much mediocrity. He was great in the day, but now I feel he just phones it in.
@@hughtube5154 Like I said he has a problem with quantity and takes a lot of cash grabs. Part of it I’m sure has to do with running his film festival that grants young artists more exposure. She said some of his performances are the greatest performances of ALL TIME and in the same breath said he’s overrated. Doesn’t an all time comment suggest greatness? Are we gonna say Einstein wasn’t consistent enough for us or are we gonna applaud his theory of relativity?
I like DiCaprio but agree on the emoting. The scene in Killers Of The Flower Moon where he's told his daughter died and he has a break down in the jail cell kind of made me cringe tbh
I agree. I don't mind DiCaprio but I've never bought into the hype that he's the greatest actor of his generation. I always feel like I'm seeing someone acting on screen and not a full transformation.
Yeah, I'd say his roles feel more distinct than Maggie is suggesting. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Cape Fear...Even in Once Upon A Time in America he feels a lot more understated and quiet than in a role like Casino. I mean, sure, he doesn't play against type much, but he's earned his reputation imo.
Also his performance in Cape fear still terrifies me till date. these film nobs really just types random bullshit statements just to feel themselves above others
Terrible take with DeNiro saying he has "Three or four" stand out roles is an absolute sin lol, One can only agree to that if you've seen like 3 DeNiro movies in your life You can literally say the exact same thing about Al Pacino, "Yeah that guy only had like 3 or 4 stand out roles the rest of it is just interchangeable gangster characters and questionable comedy roles" Like??? lol, lmao even, The fact you defended Gwyneth Paltrow beforehand only makes it even more hilarious
For real. Most people forget his supporting roles though. Untouchables, Angel Heart, Backdraft, Copland, Marvin’s Room, Sleepers, Jackie Brown. Most people haven’t seen smaller films like This Boy’s Life either. Still: anyone that says he only plays gangsters and psychos has no credibility.
@@timetheory84I was gonna say he was such a ham in angel heart. I think it’s hard not to be overrated to some degree when people have the reverence they do for him. He’s not my favorite but he’s certainly very good.
Judi Dench for what? Aside from Notes on a Scandal - I haven't seen her do anything else that great except A Fine Romance. Helen Mirren? She is fine and passable in most stuff she does. I mean Prime Suspect is my jam but her movies are hit and miss. She's no Meryl Streep. Cate Blanchett - I feel like if you have seen one grand Blanchett performance, you have seen them all.
they all boring, specifically Mirren who’s basically doing nothing on autopilot just changing from modern to period spaces going back & forth; Streep’s heyday has passed, nothing interesting to invent from herself anymore, but she has proud moments; I found Dench subtlest of them all, somehow from the regular prim cold ice queens and dames, she possesses that very zest which allows to divide her seemingly monotone roles one from another; Blanchett is the devil in the flesh, can’t really stomach her egregious manner - glad we’re having a break from her for the time being.
I can't imagine Judi Dench being able to do Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, A cry in the dark, Death Becomes Her or Bridges of Madison Country but I could see Meryl do everything Dench has done and do it with ease, same with Mirren.
Streep is by far my favorite in this group one of my favorites overall. Blanchett is pretty similar in most of her roles and overall I think she works better in her smaller supporting roles like Cinderella or Don’t Look Up not dominating the whole film. Dench is rather subtle . There is a certain way she has that can be dependable in a role like Maggie Smith. Mirren is a hit and miss.
All the acting in that movie is incredible, but she might have the most thankless role and she crushed it. The “what’s in the box” scene is only impactful if we care about her character, and we do because she’s so great in the few scenes she has.
DeNiro is simply the GOAT. He is legendary for his preparation, is improvisation on set, his professionalism. I just watch a long form video on UA-cam the other of Jodie Foster discussing Robert DeNiro and the movie Taxi Driver, and all the preparations. All kind of stuff he did exclusively with her for weeks as a child, creating a bond, rehearsing the scenes like in a real diner in NY or somewhere else, meeting with young prostitutes etc. Robert DeNiro is all that and more. In fact, I’ve heard many say he his literally the benchmark for other actors. I think younger generations likes to hate on the older ones, I understand. He also is prolific, and some of his choices are discutable, but he has a masterpiece in every decade since the ‘70. Nobody else can say that and that’s why he’s the Greatest of all time.
Actors that are very versatile does not mean that they are better, most comedian usually always play the same role because those are the hardest role to play. There aren't many actors that can replace Joe Pesci in any of his films is a good example.
But those comedians most usually won't be considered for an oscar nod either. The really best actors are ones that know how to transform into different personalities, that's why Gary Oldman is considered an all time great, and why Joe Pesci is considered as a great mob genre actor.
@@nichobeeCan Gary Oldman replace Joe Pesci in his roles in Goodfellas or Casino? Next is what roles are harder to pull off than comedy? Alot of people are not very happy with the Oscar's. The Oscar's should be let the public vote not a group of selected few votes.
For someone to say that De Niro only plays himself is to not understand De Niro the person. He's known to be extremely introverted. Most of his characters are not. Strange take, though the latter half of his career has been lazy at best.
@@RyanCMcD We are not talking about personality, but mannerisms, ticks, gestures, the way his sits, the way he moves his hands when he talks, the way he frowns, his accents etc. Deniro may be shy and quiet, but if you put him in a situation when he NEEDS TO raise his voice and engage with people, what you see in his movies would be how he does it in real life. That consistency is why you can have someone doing a Deniro impression without asking which movie it is based on.
biggest problems in film are usually w writing, or perhaps casting. Actors are sooo fragile in terms of career. Sometimes a no name non-actor can steal the show from the most dedicated professional without even trying. Tough profession
The Robert deniro slander really grinds my gears. Be a strong lead and having range to pull of different characters are two entirely different skills. Both of Wich are impressive and difficult. Imagine seeing Daniel day lewis or Gary oldman in casino as the lead. It would be ridiculous!
Great episode. My list: 1. Tom Hanks 2. Sidney Poitier 3. Ryan Reynolds 4. Meryl Streep 5. Jared Leto 6. Seth Rogan 7. James Franco 8. Sandra Bullock 9. Ben Affleck 10. Natalie Portman About Ewen ... I saw him in a low budget movie called Shallow grave back in 1994. I told myself, this is going to be a star and he's perfect for playing Obi Wan Kenobi. Called it. He's also phenomenal in Trains potting. But, I don't think he's an A lister to begin with. But, I am a fan. Thanks for sharing!
For me, it would be Jennifer Lawrence. She can give a good performance, but I have found her delivery to be stiff, and if she's not interested in a project it shows. Look at X-Men: Apocalypse, Michael Fassbender still put in the effect and Lawrence looked like she didn't want to be there. I will admit she had metaphorical ball for that scene in No Hard Feelings
21st century Tom Cruise, outside of Collateral & Tropic Thunder. I wish he did more interesting & prestige worthy stuff like Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut & Collateral
It seems like he took more chances earlier in his career. But I guess the money came in and he seemed to settle down. But yeah I see him slowing down on action movies as he ages and the MI franchise seems to be on its last legs and DR1 showed hints of that. So I am looking forward to what's in store in the last leg of his career. Dramatic Tom Cruise is a different beast!
I think people underrated Cruise as an actor, he really was a damn good dramatic actor and I hope he gets back to that after the final Mission Impossible movie.
He’s underrated. He usually doesn’t even get credit for Born on the 4th, Interview with the Vampire, Magnolia, and Tropic Thunder. He also doesn’t get proper credit for being a great movie star. Vanilla Sky is the perfect combination of both imo.
Dinero is an amazing actor. I think the problem is actors play in different leagues and sometimes different sports so it depends what you like watching. Ryan Gosling bothers me greatly for the only reason I don't like his films, he's a good actor though. I'd like DiCaprio to be on this list as recently someone compared his to Daniel Day Lewis on our channel, and Leo will never be Daniel Day Lewis, he will always be 90% Dicaprio on screen and 10% character, Daniel is 99% character if not 100%.
I love the fact that you used the fraise "comforted buy Ewan McGregor"! I honestly didn't know I was searching for a fraise to describe how I feel about Ewan McGregor. But the moment I heard you say "comforted buy." I instantly knew exactly what you where talking about. thank you for this! I feel some how just a little bit more hole.
There is no Day-Lewis or Gary Oldman without De Niro. This Boy’s Life, Awakenings, Mad Dog and Glory, Backdraft, Copland, Jackie Brown…fact that you claim A Bronx Tale is the same as Casino is absurd. He didn’t even play a gangster. One caveat: De Niro is only good when he can disappear into a role. It’s also not fair to judge him post-2000. He had to turn down Gangs of NY due to his children, and many roles were taken due to financial obligations. De Niro IS the blueprint and half his best performances were minor roles in films like Untouchables and Sleepers. He literally has the best filmography of any actor in history.
Florence Pugh is probably underrated, since most people know her from these more recent big budget flashy films. Her earlier performances are stunning. She's capable of much more than what she's offered.
I wish the online film community would remember there is a plethora of films made in other countries in other than America. That being said, I am so happy she didn't say Tony Leung was overrated
Robert De Niro overrated, that's about the stupidest thing I ever heard. I've watched him since the early 70's his drama's, his comedies, even his romances, he is definitely one of the greatest actors this world has ever produced!
Yeah, she's full of it tbh. DeNiro's not so famous for his looks, there's a reason, it's because he's brilliant. The end of his career saw a bunch of hot garbage movies which he clearly just took for the money. Almost everything now is junk hack writing usually all self-aware with awkward comedy and a cringeworthy obvious agenda, all of which completely destroy any suspension of disbelief whenever trying to watch most modern movies.
Your De Niro take is laughable. Have you seen movies such as The King of Comedy, Midnight Run, Awakenings, A Bronx Tale, Cop Land? Just to mention a few. All very different performances that are far removed from the typical Italian tough guy that you so wrongly think is the only thing he can do. Does he have some misses, especially in his later years? Sure. But that's part of trying things. The man redefined acting. He was the first to physically transform and become the character that he's playing. Also, he's not cerebral??? Wtf? What do you think a performance like Taxi Driver is? It's not a physical, expressive performance... I think you need to evaluate yourself and your knowledge about films and acting, with all due respect.
Deniro is a prick and his later work has been mostly boring but he did some great stuff in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. I can't knock his acting because he was one of the greatest in his prime. He gave plenty of great performances outside of movies directed by Marty. No question that Marty helped his career but it's unfair for people to act like Deniro had nothing else going on.
George Clooney mugs and plays the same guy in most movies. He's had a few hits and numerous huge bombs. His astronaut with Sandra Bullock in Gravity, looked like he was just there to smile.
I’m always uncomfortable with the term overrated. I mean it’s one thing to criticize individual performances, but to dismiss an actors entire work, feels a little bit beyond criticism and more personal.
To me this "rating game" reminds me of people saying the Stones are better than the Beatles. It's apples and oranges. Just the fact that these people are at the top of their field says a lot. Everyone mentioned is at least GOOD.
When talking about de Niro you have to look at roles like The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, or Godfather II which aren't interchangeable with his "Italian Mob" roles. Having said that, it's no secret that he basically gave up the craft after Casino, and has virtually phoned his performances in since then.
De Niro's range? Early on, astonishing. The dude in Mean Streets is 180 degrees removed from Taxi Driver, who is nothing like the dude in Godfather 2, who is nothing like the dude in King of Comedy. He's just made a ton of shitty, pedestrian movies. He's been making movies for 50 years. He clearly loves acting. He ain't a writer. If there weren't so many shitty writers around, he'd get better scripts, better characters. Since the 70s, the good scripts have been few, but every so often he gets lucky, like getting to play the 'terrorist' who fixes things in a world where nothing works in Brazil.
Surprised no one has said Keanu Reeves. The dude is literally just an empty John Wick action template. Not good in The Matrix series, horrible in Dracula & so mediocre in Point Break. I think his most recent Matrix performance is one of the worst of the 2020s. Just terrible.
DeNiro in his later films from 2010 on has been coasting a bit as he has switched from movie leading man to now supporting character actor in most films. Though you forget his performance in the comedies like The King of Comedy, New York New York and Midnight Run, his turn as the Devil in Angel Heart, his odd performance as Capt Shakespeare in Stardust. He has done a lot more that just play one role over and over. Though it was interesting to see him in the Joker switch roles from King of Comedy.
In the 70s DeNiro was different in every movie. Johnny Boy and Travis Bickle are two different animals, as well as Vito and the catcher from Bang the Drum Slowly. All different. I happen to think DeNiro as Travis Bickle is the best performance ever put on film.
I think he explored roles until the mid 90s or so similar to Pacino. Like he even had Awakenings and Cape Fear in the 90s. He didn't settle to swapping between Comedy Deniro and Mob Boss Deniro until later on.
@@oophorror2251 I think they are not that far apart in terms of range. Pacino demonstrated quite a bit of range before the 90s in movies like Panic in Needle Park, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, And Justice for All, and more.
De Niro's range: Godfather 2, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deerhunter, Goodfellas, Midnight Run, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear, Awakenings, Heat, Wag The Dog, Mad Dog and Glory, Jackie Brown, Frankenstein, 1900, The Untouchables, Brazil, Bang The Drum Slowly, Joker, Backdraft. The quality of his work has tailed off over the last 20-25 years, but for a quarter of a century before that I struggle to think of a single actor who's had more range.
I thought Gwyneth's role as Pepper Potts was incredible. And her portrayal of Margot in The Royal Tenenbaums was just flawless. That's one of my favorite films, she is a force of nature. I can't remember many of her other performances but those two were amazing.
Up until more recently I always felt Anthony Hopkins was overrated. I felt his quintessential Britishness was doing a lot of the work for him. I've since changed my mind as my perception about acting has changed. Now I think of actors' portrayels as much closer to theirselves as being a essential reason they were chosen, and chameleon actors much less affable and trying too hard. All this to say: I think Daniel Day-Lewis is wildly overrated 😂
Anthony Hopkins is a great actor in my opinion. I sometimes think his performance in Silence of the Lambs gets praised too much though. His performance in the Father was stunning.
How did I just find your page?! I can definitely seeing this being my go-to UA-cam channel. Have you ever watched/reviewed In Bruges? To me, one of the best movies ever and maybe the best written script
I get DeNiro gets lumped into only doing certain types of characters but he can play great roles outside of that. He was brilliant in Awakenings. He’s not a chameleon but he’s great at what he does
Disagree that Robert DeNiro is overrated. He played the loner Travis Bickle very well. He was great as the young Corleone. He was great as the overprotective father in Meet The Parents. He was great as the goofy terrorist in Brazil. He was great in The Mission. But he's best known as Scorsese's tough Italian guy.
De Niro has some great roles in which he played against type. For instance, I thought he gave a terrific understated performance as the shadowy political fixer Conrad Brean in Wag The Dog. That role was very different from De Niro's usual New York gangster tough guy parts.
Sorry I Like Your Channel but concering DeNiro you guys are Dead wrong . He did so many Movies it is just a real hot take to say he just plays only one character . Yeah his work quality has dropped for years but his Early work is undisputed . Just Watch King of Comedy and compare his character to the deer hunter
Rin Tin Tin. I mean, he's _literally_ the same guy in every picture. His performances are invariably stiff, staid, and one-note, to say nothing of his utter inability to 'sell' his far-fetched feats of onscreen heroism. As evidence of his ineptitude, one need only view _Tracked in the Snow Country_ - and realise that the rather poor showing on display therein is, in fact, one of his _better_ outings. The fact that this dull, unimpressive, and frankly incapable thespian was granted a star on the Walk of Fame is clear evidence that success in the industry really is largely a matter of 'who you know', as it simply cannot be accounted for by any other line of reasoning.
I actually agree. Compare his character to Robert Downey's one note villain in "Oppenheimer" I thought DeNiro made the character human- most villains in real life don't see themselves as such, they rationalize their misdeeds.
Just because you play Italian-American tough guy doesn’t mean all characters or acting was same. In casino de niro catches his wife planning his murder and throws her out of the house doesn’t hit her once in raging bull he smacks her for smiling while talking to men. In Irishman he is a timid and survivor not the alpha in the room like in goodfellas, check out the number of time he stutters while talking to his seniors in Irishman. You can play an Italian gangster in 20 movies and it can still be different
Deniro's best roles: Cape Fear, Godfather II, Raging Bull, Midnight Run, Goodfellas, Awakenings, and Cop Land. He has just made too many movies, so people tend to forget his great acting in certain movies.
By asking how his performance in Once Upon A Time In America is different from his performance in Casino or Taxi Driver you kind of draw parallels to these performances. Personally I see Travis Bickle as an outcast who is largely removed from what is happening around him like Rupert Pupkin in The King Of Comedy or the rascally performance in Mean Streets. The only thing that connects the first three roles mentioned is that Robert De Niro was the actor who played them. Whether he is "overrated" is up for debate, but as for the examples given I don't agree. I don't agree with people who claim that he disappears into a role, but that has never been the reason why I like him. He personifies authority and what he gets across is more in what he doesn't say or do and how the director makes him look, which I think is a huge part of what makes or breaks a performance. I wouldn't say that he's successful for being on the ground floor with Scorsese, but that Scorsese gets De Niro and knows how to use him. The Killers Of The Flower Moon is one example for me personally. Tommy Lee Jones would have probably been more weary and introverted, but when you see DiCaprio in the weaselly role, I think DeNiro builds off of that to create a contrast to the more stoic performance of Lily Gladstone. Ryan Reynolds is actually talented when his personality is utilized in such a way that it highlights the cartoonish attitude he has. What I don't particularly like about him is the thing I didn't like about people like Jim Carrey and Robin Williams: They couldn't seem to turn their schtick off. They were always ON. Jim Carrey has stopped that for the most part, but Reynolds falls into that trap. Doesn't make him feel very relatable. Ewan McGregor is simple. Basic makes him sound bland. I see him as direct. Similar to Billy Crudup.
i struggle with a lot of leo dicaprio performances, i love him in some stuff, but i find him tiresome in most things. i hated every second he was on screen in Dont Look Up (to be fair there were very few seconds i enjoyed in dont look up)
With Sydney I do think that she is a decent enough actress. She just needs to pick roles to her acting strengths. She wasn’t even convincing in “Anyone But You” sis didn’t believe a single like she was saying especially the “I think they’re trying to get us together”. She seems like she would thrive in horror and art house films. I would really love to see her work with Ari ester or Toni Collette I feel like they could bring out something else in her. Shes so stuck in this sex symbol arc right now and it isn’t helping her. I have a prediction that she will undergo a physical transformation and really commit to a dark character in the vein of Charlize Theron in “Monster”. Sis needs a new team cause this ain’t it at all. Her performance in “Euphoria” season two really shocked me I didn’t know that she had THAT in her sis went OFF. She needs her “Monster” moment I know she has it in her to give a performance of that caliber.
I love de Niro in his movies, I don't think he has bad performances. I enjoyed his comedies as well which makes me odd because a lot of people dislike his comedies. I love meet the fockers and dirty grandpa. He has done great roles even at his latter years like the intern and silver lining playbook. He definitely has range. His roles in the mafia movies were fun and his performances felt really good.
I couldn't disagree more with the Florence Pugh opinion. She brings a visceral experience to every role I've seen her in. She also stole the show in Little Women imo!
The problem with DeNiro to me is that he has been all over the place when it comes to his choices. He has made some gems such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Godfather part II, Goodfellas, Killers Of The Flower Moon...but on the other hand, he made duds like Dirty Grandpa, man! How do you reconcile the two things? :) Anyway, still love him to bits, but he has acted in way more duds than your Pacinos or Nicholsons, in my opinion.
He's got a bunch of restaurants, real estate, businesses, and two ex-wives sucking him dry. Of course he's gonna take paychecks left, right and center.
Get his cartoony role in killers of the flower moon off of that list, that movie sucked. Include Deer Hunter, Cape Fear, Heat, Mean Streets, Jackie Brown.
De Niro's performance in Goodfellas was not good, it was pretty bad. He didn't ruin the movie but this could have been played by anyone and it wouldn't have made much difference. Everybody else was doing a fine job while he phoned in his performance.
Paltrow and Jessica Alba are two stars who have made waaaaaaaaaaaay more money outside of Hollywood than they ever did in it. For them, staying in front of the camera would've come at a huge financial cost.
I don't think De Niro is the undisputed GOAT like most do but I do find the idea he doesn't have any range to be baffling. I mean even in the 90s he showed a lot of range, in 93 alone with This Boy's Life and A Bronx Tale. Love your channel overall though.
No matter who, no matter the movie, no matter the director, there will always be someone who will say it/he/she is overrated or underrated. Those comments always get on my nerve, but that's just me.
Yes, DeNiro's last twenty years have been loaded with throwaway performances but how about- This Boys LIfe, Godfather 2, The Deer Hunter, Mean Streets, King of Comedy, The Mission, etc. Wow! As for your take on DeNiro in Once Upon A Time In America- an amazing performance in maybe the best film of the 80's- Maggie you better lay off the drugs. You have been melting away right before my eyes.
Hugh Grant definitely. Whether floppy-haired romantic lead or creepy villain, he overdoes the puppy dog look to his co-stars, like “look how irresistible I am”. He’s always been resistible to me.
Ryan Reynolds popularized the “so, that happened” style of acting that you see in every Netflix movie and show.

In regards to Robert De Niro, I’ve always found one of his best and most underrated performances to be King of Comedy. One of the few times in his career where I feel he really played against type, and I thought he absolutely killed it. I wish he took on more roles akin to that one

He is truly amazing in The King of Comedy.
I thought his last decent performance was in American Hustle, and I didn't even like that movie.

Good call
He is very entertaining though.

My picks for overrated actors:
- Paul Rudd (he's exactly the same in every movie and just not interesting to watch, no variety, just playing the same goofball over and over again)
- Bradley Cooper (at first I didn't mind him in movies, but at one point he got this idea that he's going to show everyone that he's "an artist" and now he just comes across as pretentious snob)
- Emma Watson & Jenna Ortega (I really don't get why so many people are obsessed with them: they're exactly the same in every movie and so painfully bland)
- Pete Davidson (I can't explain, but his presence just annoys me. It's one of those loud and obnoxious people you meet at the party and immediately want to go home)
- Seth Rogen (his entire schtick is "I'm a bearded manchild that smokes pot, watches porn and curses a lot, because saying f*ck six million times in one minute is funny")
I agree with you on all these people.
Good list. But I think, Bradley Cooper is a very good actor. Jenna is young. She is still learning her craft. She wouldn't be popular and appeal to young people if she was bland.
Jenna is literally a Disney packaged product, she looks strange…like she sort of carries herself like someone who has achieved great things.
Paul Rudd? Try "Mute".
Ryan Reynolds in Buried: nice work in a drama.
I’m so sorry… 😞
I think he had good moments in THE AMITYVILLE HORROR remake.
Buried is easily one of his best performances!
George Clooney. Handsome guy, great voice, decently entertaining and engaging but all I can see is George Clooney acting.
I agree. George Clooney is, from what I understand, one of the richest actors in Hollywood. Women seem to love him. I personally think he is okay but seem to have an aura around him like he is one of the top actors of all time. Which I just don't see. I like some of his movies.. But to me he is more of a star than an actor.
He's shallow and hence, boring.
I agree, watch him on ER and that is basically him in 99% of his movies.
He isn't even good. George Clooney - that's someone who is OVERrated
There’s something very old Hollywood about that
The problem with trying to rate "Overrated" is that many of them, like DeNiro is that they did good work early and fell into a dependable groove where they just repeat themselves.
Big Fish? C’mon!
He WOULD be held in that high regard if he was just in every Danny Boyle movie like he used to.
Ah well, I pay so little attention to the Star Wars community and I especially loathe the prequels, so I don't hear much about all that.
He is amazing in "Birds of Prey". Otherwise, I found him perfunctory.
Underrated? The scene at the restaurant is a classic one.

Brad Pitt plays two characters. 🤔
How can you have a conversation about Robert Deniro's range without mentioning the King of Comedy?!
Or "Awakenings", "Silver Linings Playbook", "Cape Fear"...
I have to admit I didnt even watch "King of Comedy", but I think what you also have to mention is
1. Godfather 2
2. The Deer Hunter
3. Taxi Driver
which are among the best performances of all times on par with the movie raging bull she mentioned. I could name up to 10 performances that are so far beyond the average Oscar winners, there are imo no words for it. If I had to take a pick of the greatest actor of all times (I am aware that its highly subjective and also could change depending on your window which movies you watched) I would pick him.
I have a theory:

Mark Wahlberg. I feel like he’s mediocre at most of what he does.

I think the comments about Robert de Niro being where he is because he is Martin Scorsese's friend are unfair. In Godfather II his presence is absolutely electric every time he's on screen.
Florence is so talented. She's the best one in the LW, which is otherwise a disaster movie IMHO.
DeNiro's The King of Comedy is his best role... He plays a total nerd, and pulls it off
Mad Dog and Glory is another good one. Deniro plays a wimpy cop and Bill Murray plays a tough mob guy.

She don't know what she's talking about.
Also worth noting: In Awakenings, De Niro played a completely different role than in most of his other films, and he absolutely nailed it.

That person's take on Robert De Niro could also be said about Jack Nicholson, Christopher Walken, and several other actors.
Jack Nicholson is sometimes great but at times he is not very good. I for example did not think his performance in a Few Good Men was good at all.
I like Nicholson but he's not at the level of De Niro, Pacino etc for me. Because he too often strays into cartoonish. Take The Departed, his villain is a complete cartoon, never feels remotely like a real person. @@Starkardur

I mean Prime Suspect is my jam but her movies are hit and miss. She's no Meryl Streep. Cate Blanchett - I feel like if you have seen one grand Blanchett performance, you have seen them all.
I'd take Cate Blanchett over Meryl Streep any day.
they all boring, specifically Mirren who’s basically doing nothing on autopilot just changing from modern to period spaces going back & forth;
Streep’s heyday has passed, nothing interesting to invent from herself anymore, but she has proud moments;
I found Dench subtlest of them all, somehow from the regular prim cold ice queens and dames, she possesses that very zest which allows to divide her seemingly monotone roles one from another;
Blanchett is the devil in the flesh, can’t really stomach her egregious manner - glad we’re having a break from her for the time being.
Not a big Gwyneth Paltrow fan but her diner scene with Morgan Freeman in Se7en's undeniably incredible.
All the acting in that movie is incredible, but she might have the most thankless role and she crushed it. The “what’s in the box” scene is only impactful if we care about her character, and we do because she’s so great in the few scenes she has.
Hard Eight is another one of her’s that doesn’t get mentioned much.
Yeah she’s a good actress who was not given enough meat to work with. Seven shows what she can do when given a real part.

Wrong, he embodies every character he plays in a movie.
I think people think he'd always be able to go to the ridiculous lengths he did when he was younger for a role, which is unrealistic
Yeah he’s a boss in spite of his TDS
Deniro is a prick and his later work has been mostly boring but he did some great stuff in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. I can't knock his acting because he was one of the greatest in his prime. He gave plenty of great performances outside of movies directed by Marty. No question that Marty helped his career but it's unfair for people to act like Deniro had nothing else going on.
Simply one of the greatest actors of all time
@@kylewalshgunner9650 Only movie I liked DeNiro in was GF II and that's because he kept his mouth shut throughout most of it.
She kind of sets the tone/opens the floodgates for "overthinkers" to come crashing in.
Thank you for speaking up for Gwyneth, the backbone of movies I've enjoyed ranging from Sliding Doors to Proof.
He is not overrated .... everybody knows he is not a very good actor.....
Are there a bunch Oscars Keanu Reeves has that I'm unaware of? He's more of a "beloved" actor, not over-rated.
Nobody ever said Reeves was a good actor. Just a great human being
Reeves is great in certain kinds of movies and I don't think anyone thinks he's a great actor.
He is a beloved person because of his personality and people like him as an action star. Nobody would ever say he is a very good actor.
@@ssssssstssssssssPacino doesn’t have De Niro’s range though. Dustin Hoffman is Bobby’s only match imo.
It would be if Brando hadn't played Terry Malloy.
@@TackJorranceso you admit his work post 1990s is subpar? If so, surely the "GOAT" shouldn't have so many asterisks and qualifiers next to his name.
@@oophorror2251 I think they are not that far apart in terms of range. Pacino demonstrated quite a bit of range before the 90s in movies like Panic in Needle Park, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, And Justice for All, and more.
Goodfellas 1989 Awakenings 1990 and Jacknife 1989 are all different and great De Niro performances.
Maybe Al Pacino Daniel day lewis but that’s about it
@@Anthonycheesman33 Daniel Day Lewis's get-ups and accents and unnatural forced expressions hide his "range". He is not that subtle.
Westworld, Father come to mind...
I felt like Anthony acting ability far exceed the characters he was playing.
He would not be so popular were it not for his Hannibal character.
How did I just find your page?! I can definitely seeing this being my go-to UA-cam channel. Have you ever watched/reviewed In Bruges? To me, one of the best movies ever and maybe the best written script
The De Niro take is complete lunacy lol
Disagree

Zendaya. She has one face, happy face, angry face, frustrated face, annoying face. One face to rule them all.
I get DeNiro gets lumped into only doing certain types of characters but he can play great roles outside of that. He was brilliant in Awakenings. He’s not a chameleon but he’s great at what he does
you say hes not a chameleon yet Travis bickle is iconic.
Acting is not about doing impressions. Acting is about understanding the psyche of the character and bringing out subtleties.
Robert DeNiro in Jackie Brown is interchangeable with his characters in Goodfellas and Casino. Okay 🤣
Same year, Heat!
Jackie Brown is Tarantino's second worst film.
They are 3 completely different characters. Don't be an idiot.
Hey, that was great. Love these thought-provoking topics. And I always enjoy hearing your thoughts, Maggie. And you look absolutely lovely as well. ❤
Florence Pugh was superb in Lady Macbeth.
She’s terrible I really dislike her
Rin Tin Tin.
He sniffed the right butts. That explains it.
I thought De Niro's performance in Killers of the Flower Moon was one of his best, at least in the last 25 years.
I actually agree. Compare his character to Robert Downey's one note villain in "Oppenheimer" I thought DeNiro made the character human- most villains in real life don't see themselves as such, they rationalize their misdeeds.
I think he should win the Oscar over RDJ tbh
DeNiro's performance in Raging Bull is the greatest ever put on film.
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
Of course not
@@bdleo300of course yes dumb troll
This Boy's Life
Seth Rogen and his "HhehhehEhhhEhe" laugh.
Yeah, he seems like a super nice guy and all, but that laugh is atrocious 😂
Just reading the laughter and I can hear him laughing.
Worse than Eddie Murphy’s "eH eH eH eH eH"?
Only character actor.
Observe & Report is a decent dark comedy. 👮🏼♂️ It came out 2009 around the same time as Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Which was a much bigger hit. 🎬
You are very interesting, I like most of your opinions and some I do disagree with. You are Crushing It! Thank you 🙌🙌
I would say the most overrated actor of them all was John Wayne. Major star but wooden delivery.
I think the modern equivalent would be Keanu Reeves.
i struggle with a lot of leo dicaprio performances, i love him in some stuff, but i find him tiresome in most things. i hated every second he was on screen in Dont Look Up (to be fair there were very few seconds i enjoyed in dont look up)
Don’t Look Up and Flowers of the Killer Moon were obviously chosen for political reasons and were awful decisions imo.
Idk if I’d call her overrated but I don’t find Sydney Sweeney very convincing.
I'm here because I thought we were going to talk about Samuel Jackson.
I couldn't disagree more with the Florence Pugh opinion. She brings a visceral experience to every role I've seen her in. She also stole the show in Little Women imo!
Florence Pugh isn’t overrated but Dr Niro is!!?? 😂😂😂😂
She has all the presence, charisma and allure of a dried dog egg.
He has like twenty kids and businesses to fund. Otherwise he would’ve been in Gangs of NY and continued his run. He’s still the 🐐.
@@StarkardurThe crack you smoke must be really good 👍. What in the fuck did I even just read?
Not a fan of Paltrow, but she was good in Hard Eight. Almost didn't recognize her
Paltrow and Jessica Alba are two stars who have made waaaaaaaaaaaay more money outside of Hollywood than they ever did in it. For them, staying in front of the camera would've come at a huge financial cost.
I liked Paltrow in Se7en; of course you had to keep your head to follow the story
Florence Pugh killed it in Little Women
