All of these sales (or lack of) happened way before the whole exclusive controversy. That's not what motivated this. It's more likely they didn't market it well enough in Europe.

I honestly reckon Microsoft is working against Xbox and Xbox team.
Phil genuinely seems to care about gaming, while Microsoft cares more about profits than anything.
Microsoft are the ones behind Xbox giving up on Backwards compatibility to focus on making more money on newer titles and remakes.
Microsoft's problem is that they give up on everything too fast if it doesn't make profits right away. Stuff like Windows Phone for example.

Xbox need to do significantly better with marketing cause as far as the console go and even pc hardware, i rarely see commercial on TV
Here in Germany there have been two ads last year. One for the Diablo 4 Series X bundle which advertised pre-orders for the game and console. That ad aired unchanged a month after the game had already been released (still telling people to preorder) and another one for Starfield, which advertised Xcloud on Samsung TVs - "no console required".
For Forza they paid content creators to stream the game which turned out hilariously bad as the game was barely functioning at launch.
Then there was an interview with a French (?) Xbox PR guy who basically admitted that they had no marketing budget at all.
I'm sure MS know exactly what they're doing, at this point I simply don't believe it's incompetence. It's clear they don't care about the console at all. All they do is trying to tell people that everything is fine so that people don't stop buying stuff.
I guess they need more time to transition to being a full third party and mobile game publisher.

When you actually turn off any electronic device you cycle the resources that it uses and many times this dumps some old and unneeded ones that it's done using and won't need again :) it's like filling a canteen of water that you empty out halfway through your hike, wouldn't it just be better if you could drop that canteen (or re-fill it) halfway through rather than haul it the rest of the way when it's empty and just slowing you down? Resources work the same way for your computer, cell phone etc. power cycle your electronic devices every so often folks!
As a massive Xbox fan for years, I think this past weeks/months really really hurt Xbox as an entity. They essentially killed the Xbox by trying to hide the release of 4 games on ps5... they failed miserably with the marketing of that news, the event where they went on the podcast was absolutely not reinsurance.. the total opposite and they essentially killed the hype for everyone. Why go out and buy an xbox now? They made it clear that there is no point in investing in their echosystem because we can just get everything on the other echosystems and doing so give us more from the other echosystem. Its baffling what they did and most important how they did it and even if I like Phil a lot, I'm starting to think that he just failed in the end.

Why buy an Xbox? Because you want to play on an Xbox. That's the only reason to get any console.
well you have to push that thought a bit more. What are the reasons you want to play on xbox? If its games, then buy a ps5 you will get the same games + sony games, or even better buy a PC you will get all the nice cloud saving feature, gamepass pc and sony games. The only reason you buy an xbox is because you have a big library from xbox one era and you are somewhat fucked with that.@@TheDarkAdventure

The Series console is backwards compatible all the way back to the original console. Not everyone wants a PC. I have a PC but a lot of people just enjoy console gaming and believe it or not where you prefer to play means more than any bells and whistles.
PS5 doesn't have any games. I don't know if you're unaware but they already announced they're not releasing any games for 18 months. They are only getting 4 old Xbox games. Not the entire library. That point you made makes no sense and is more wishful thinking than anything. Gamepass will not be on PlayStation. When faced with Gamepass and day (which gives you a discount on the games you buy) and date exclusives vs PS5 paying for a decade old game at full price the Xbox is still the better offer.
I built a PC because I use it for work and gaming. Most people don't care about PCs. They're not buying high end PCs. To build a PC that can run a 4k60 game costs nearly twice or more what a PS5 and Xbox Series console costs and most people can't afford to build that kind of PC. There's also a knowledge gap that plug and play beats every time.
I'll also say this because it's my preference. One of the main reasons I don't like PlayStation is because I don't like their controllers and I prefer Xbox games. Everyone unknown that plays an Xbox or uses an Xbox controller for their PC gaming feels the same.
@@TheDarkAdventureI'm the same as you, I prefer the Xbox controller to the PlayStation, plus back catalogue, plus gamepass. There is literally 2 games on PlayStation that I would like on Xbox... but now they're on PC so one day I'll upgrade my custom built PC (which I don't use for gaming) with a decent GPU so I can play them.
IMO Microsoft has the most robust future centric approach, whereas Sony are relying on the old ways to keep them going.

I wish i could find a single use for AI. I tried westlaw's copilot for a while and was supremely disappointed. I've also tried more general LLMs like Gemini and Microsoft's copilot, and found no use for them.
I think the whole exclusives thing will be one of the things Phil looks back on and regrets most when his career at MS is over. They'll be, once again, repairing their public image (or just giving up) for decades.
Media have titled that "Xbox was finished" for just 4 Xbox games released on PS5... So Xbox HW has bad sales...

I’m such a sucker for investing so much money in the Xbox ecosystem.
I mean why? Let's say you ever invested in the Nintendo ecosystem, they're notorious for killing off entire store fronts. I can't play any of my Wii games I purchased on my switch. PS is also really bad with the PS4 and their answer to backwards compatibility was originally $20 a month for streaming. Xbox is the only console platform to take backwards compatibility seriously and let you play games you own from 360 or OG xbox days including with their disc.
I mean even if the Xbox ecosystem disappears tommorow, you've wasted no more money than PS and Nintendo gamers do just buy being in those ecosystems period. Heck, you're still better off so long as MS keeps servers up for a while. Because I swear to you after the Switch 2 backwards compatibility will be gone again in subsequent Nintendo consoles. Actually in the past they didn't even wait that long. The first Wii consoles were able to read and play GameCube games and then subsequent refreshes took that away. And those are the dominant platforms. The only permanent fix is to be a PC gamer.

Marketing for the Pro consoles is easy. As long as the Pro consoles replace the current models at the same price the problem is solved. Just discontinue the current Series X and PS5 and put in its place the Pro models.

They are lacking innovations for a long time. surface pro 3 and 4 and also first studio I can count as innovation, otherwise I cannot use that term...they were good products, but nothing memorable...
And duo and the other duo...were just big failures along with surface go...The rest of the lineup is already just going through incremental

Its all about perception. XBox for some unknown reason stupidly let the perception that they were going 3rd party linger. Now that is all the people who don't pay attention ( which is the majority ) know. Why buy a platform that was already sending all their games to PC and now apparently to the competing brands ( Sony/Nintendo )? Doesn't make sense, and whoever handles PR for the company should be fired. Their strategy may be sound, but their execution is asinine. Completely mind boggling how well XBox can screw up the simplest of things.

In my estimation the Series S is the baseline Xbox experience for whatever game currently exist and the X is the higher end pusher but devs are held back by the notion that these machines are "weaker" by the competition and misinformation. There are to many UA-camrs promoting ps5 pro. At this point and there are more choices other ps5 and Xbox series x/s. This system is only for the die hard fan who will buy a Sony candy bar if they put it on the market.

They need games to promote their consoles. They have a lot coming. Customers need to see people playing games on xbox and that will make them run out and get an xbox.
They were in their acquisition phase and still seemed to be and now it comes to just building games and that’s gonna take some time. Once the games pump out I see sales numbers raising.

When you put your games on other systems that hurt the Xbox brand that is why they Sales are so low
And not IMMEDIATELY quashing rumors, instead letting them ferment for weeks before sort of addressing them. Time for Phil to go. He did a great job at saving the brand, but with the clear media bias we need leadership prepared to defend the platform, not dilute it further.
Yeah I've always thought Phil is TOO NICE. He doesn't have to be Jim Ryan level of ahole but have a backbone. They've stumbled so much on messaging, confusing their audience and creating fodder for news site and channels. I play on PC and don't even own a console but its frustrating because competition is needed in the game industry.

The sales are so low, because 3.4 years in ya got 2 space games, 2 racing games, & Redfall....what Xbox did by porting Hi Fi & several Xbox one games literally just happened, so no, that's not the reason.

No reason to choose Xbox if the public perception is that big hits might come to PlayStation after a year or two. They needed to say "no AAA on PlayStation, period" and instead Phil says "not this year, we'll see how it goes, never say never."
If exclusives mattered why wouldn’t everyone just buy a PC or Nintendo? Some people just like the feel of Xbox, having gamepass available, and the controller of Xbox

It's crazy how people still don't seem to understand that people don't need to actually want to play certain exclusives if the perception is that for your 500 bucks you can play these 100 games and for the same 500 or maybe for a little more more you can get all those same 100 plus another 5. The public perception will absolutely eventually lead to people seeing no reason to buy one and pick up the other.

Most that are invested in PlayStation don't bother with Xbox anyways, which is why sales for Xbox outside of the US are even worse than they are in the US. Your reasoning for people not buying an Xbox is the exact reason PC gamers don't buy Xbox or PlayStation consoles.
@@mynameismud-qd9vu I'm a PC gamer who bought XBox because sometimes the couch is just where I am, and cross play and dirt cheap GamePass are compelling, and because Xbox is home to Bethesda and soon Blizzard. But if all those games were going to end up on PlayStation, I'd have chosen PlayStations library over XBox's GamePass value proposition.

Well they pushed me away from the Xbox brand. I have been an Xbox gamer since 2002. Now I spent over 2000 on a high end PC.
Xboxer since day 2 and on Live since minute 1, and I and on my way out as well. Their lack of transparity, open ended answers, and lack of promotion isnt gaining my trust and or interest for xbox anymore. I have zero faith in them anymore. I just wish they would go full 3rd party so I can then just go get a PS and be done with this drama shit from them. I will never ever defend a corporation, I dont play the system wars either, I just preferred the xbox over ps and pc and just never changed. But I think its time.
I spent less than £300 on a decent PC with performance midway between the PS5 and Series X.
Don't need to spend that much on unnecessary RGB and "GaMeR" branded stuff to have fun.
The problem is Xbox games being here day 1 is that the Series X is sometimes more expensive as a point of entry than a budget PC which has games Xbox doesn't. It's a no brainer which one will do better.
I don't buy or play something just because everyone else does. I buy something and use it because I like it. My PS5 has been sitting in a cupboard for almost a year, because, I prefer the Xbox titles and ecosystem. Helldivers 2 is the only Sony exclusive that I would like to play, but I prefer to play this on PC over PS5. I see why Sony fans are all excited over it, for it natively finally allows co-op play with friends via PS5; something that MS offers natively on most Xbox exclusive titles. If you prefer PlayStation, go buy one. I started the last generation with a PS4 first and picked up an Xbox One about one year later; I later regretted my choice.
3.5 years in with only Starfield as the big exclusive and then announcing all games may come to PS5. It's pretty obvious why they are failing in consoles despite it being my preferred platform. The constant walking on rakes the management and marketing team do is astounding despite the quality hardware, amazing value in gamepass and having the richest company in the world backing them.
They never mentioned that all games are going multiplatform, but titles that were not truly console meant to be console exclusives. The reality is that due to digital libraries, gamers are more permanently attached to their boxes now than ever from the last generation. Meaning that PS4 digital owners are not going to Switch to Xbox, but continue with a PS5 because of their digital libraries, so MS had to shuffle their direction a bit. It's a bit sad, but makes logical sense.

Did the rumours of exclusives/3rd party drama affect sales, or is it too early to know possible impact, I wonder? 47% down seems very steep even for Xbox in Europe (considering the Xbox is strong-ish in the UK and they do market the console there at least).
I enjoy my Series X and will buy the Slim Series x and the next Gen in 2026. I've played all PS exclusives and finished none of them. Boring and all feel the same. PS controller is horrible and the UX is horrendous.
The Series home screen experience has been significantly downgraded. Microsoft Rewards has been significantly downgraded. I get that Microsoft wants Game Pass to be a success, but it can’t be at the expense of everything else. When I turn on my Series X and it looks like an ugly billboard, and I need to scroll past game suggestions and new Game Pass titles to get to my pinned games, that doesn’t work, nor does putting a $500 cap on Rewards. January 1st I capped my point redemption and was left with a bunch of points just sitting there, so what’s the incentive to earn more?

Xbox was my main platform for 15 years. Here in Europe, the writing has been on the wall for a long time. Xbox is getting what it deserves for their lack of support and their non existent localization and marketing efforts. It's been clear for a while now that MS does not want to be in the console hardware market which is why I switched to buying my games on Steam after being a console only gamer for three decades.
The Xbox brand is dead in Europe. Simple as that.
They made two separate consoles and launched them at the same time with no games that showcased the hardware then set the same requirements for the cheaper model as the more capable model which made developer work more difficult. They really fumbled on this one
When their messaging is at the same time, "we have no plans to abandon the console market" and also saying, "you don't need to buy our console to play our games," you can't have it both ways. The console is dying through neglect from Microsoft (and we see developers prioritise PS5 at launch), it will continue to lead to low hardware sales. Microsoft has acquired what seems like half the gaming market, yet has precious few games to show for it and tells you to play them elsewhere.
Game Pass Ultimate = #1 Reason to still get an Xbox Console.
As long as Xbox Game Studio games continue to release Day 1 on Game Pass, then I'm a very happy Xbox gamer!

Plus if the rumours are true about a ps5 pro coming and xbox not doing a mid gen power upgrade is a massive mistake by Microsoft imo with GTA 6 releasing its one game that could get people to switch for the best running version made even bigger as the PC release will likely be a year after console

If Microsoft launch a Handheld, not sure how they will compete against Valve? Steam Deck has sold so many more units than Asus or Lenovo, seems odd if Microsoft join in.
Releasing a handheld that can play your entire library of xbox titles would crush the ally MSI and lenovo offerings. Selling it subsidized under the steamdeck's price would do the rest.
@@zybch It’ll still run Windows which is mostly crap for these handhelds, it can’t even hibernate a game. MS needs to come up with something else. Also Xbox library VS Steam Library? I think I know what most want and it isn’t the Xbox one.

I hope they do, Windows is not that optimized for small screens, Steam Deck rivals may be more powerful but they have a worse janky UI/software experience, and that's because with SteamOS Valve has put a ton of work.
@@jonuiucThen it’ll be locked down to Xbox only and digital games only. It will be an interesting effort to try and make the same performance as a Series S to run off a mobile device battery. In a mobile device, and price it cheap enough to get over the fact you will be stuck running Xbox only games, no Steam library for you.

Why do people keep thinking that Microsoft cares about console sales. Theyre not playstation, they have learned to profit without console sales. Their first party games are popular with some being among the most popular across all platforms. Theyre making good revenue from game pass. If youre on pc youre most likely running windows. So in a sense, pc is microsoft. Theyre expanding into mobile gaming and have expanded their xbox ecosystem into every mobile device, literally. They own the most game publishers and are just starting to get the ball rolling. The people behind xbox and microsoft are smart ass people, which is why theyre a 3 trillion dollar company. Theyre way past console sales

They don't care about outselling one another, they just care about making their accessible to those extra million fans that prefer to play their games on their particular console. @@rob.ale90 not quite, the rog ally can only play Xbox games supported by play anywhere which is a good amount but nowhere near every game. I’m talking about an Xbox handheld, with docking that maybe has Series S hardware ( I’m not tech savvy so idk all their terminology) and you’d be able to install any game you’ve bought and it anywhere you go. The Steam Deck, Switch and ROG Ally have sold well especially switch and it’d make more sense for Xbox to make a Series Console more akin to those instead of a Pro console. The ROG Ally also has Steam so if Microsoft said “oh the Rog Ally can be the portable answer” which is fine but then people would buy games off of Steam instead of the Microsoft store

Microsoft marketing for Xbox is just trash. It's supposed to be their gaming brand, but doesn't really have a cohesive presence across their divisions. I personally can't believe they like a big exclusive from Bethesda last year (Hi Fi Rush) drop on PS without a single Xbox logo. They also continue to not have any physical presence and are barely in commercials and marketing outside the US is still largely nonexistent. Add that to a wishy washy messaging online and yeah, why buy an Xbox? So many games are still skipping the console because Microsoft has yet to do anything to make the platform a must for consumers and they don't even market the features that kinda might (like Xbox play anywhere or free cloud saves or backwards compatibility). The console is probably the most consumer friendly but MS would let hell freeze over before they actually give people a reason to buy one. And then we have interviews of Phil Spencer saying "we can't promise games like starfield will never go to PS." single players exclusive games like Hi Fi Rush, which Xbox gamers have gaslit themselves into acting like wasn't the best Xbox exclusive of last year (or in a while), doesn't help.
Microsoft just genuinely doesn't know how to sell consumer products. Which we continue to see in their surface line and ALL their past failures like the Windows Phone. Xbox is my favorite console experience (only one I can stomach), but more and more I see no reason to support what Microsoft themselves refuse to support.
It's gonna hit them even harder as those who were on Xbox Rewards are reporting nerfs to their points so that could be another reason why many are moving away from Xbox. Also having owned both Sony and Xbox consoles and the silly wars between both camps, both pale in comparison to a PC. I'm glad Sony is starting to move more of their games to PC as I don't like being locked to restrictive consoles.

There is ZERO advertising for xbox consoles. You see gamepass adds that quick fire random sequences from a variety of games. You never have time to judge a game and decide you want to play it. In the UK the staff in GAME will recommend you DON'T buy an xbox. The main reason being a much smaller game library and almost no world class exclusives. Personally I play all 3 platforms and the xbox user interface is the worst by far. The achievement system is really, really poor. The xbox support page says it can take 72 hours for achievements to sync. What current day digital process takes 72 hours? Would people be happy if they bought a digital game and it took 72 hours for the sale to complete before you could download it? Do I need to order an uber 72 hours before I want it? When playing a game do I have to wait 72 hours to find out if our team won or lost that really close multiplayer match? Who cares how many teraflops you have when the user experience sucks compared to the competition. Phil is totally wrong when he says xbox poor sales is due to people's digital libraries. People bought the switch with no transfer of digital games and no backwards compatibility as the user experience was great and you know the platform will have world class exclusives.

Anyone with a capable PC or good wi-fi has no reason to own an Xbox. With so many ways to play Xbox games and unlike PS they don't force you to buy a console to play exclusives.
Not true, a pc will never offer a console experience. Many gamers prefer console. One of the problems Xbox has is forced pc crossplay. That's why I'm getting ps5 pro next.

Gamepass isn't exactly growing either. There's a total of 120 mil users. And like 30 mil Gamepass subscribers, and that includes Gamepass Core and Ultimate.
Here in Europe. Xbox is pretty non existing. Its all Playstation and Nintendo. Used to be different with the Xbox 360 and PS3 days, when both companies were still competing.

The Xbox console faithful are so screwed going forward. Satya and Amy Hood sold them out. For anyone who still doesn't understand, as console sales fall off a cliff because Microsoft games ship on Playstation and there is no longer hype around the Xbox brand, 3rd party support will dry up for Xbox hardware for games that aren't signed on for game pass. We're in the beginnings of some sad years. My plan next gen is going back to PC gaming, and having an Xbox for my wife, rather than 2 Xboxes which is what we've done for the last 2 gens.
Microsoft should leave a pro version console and just make an xbox elite 3 controller.

Microsoft have been treating me badly in 2024. Firstly they tried their best to get me to sell my Series X and dump Game Pass by putting Xbox games into PlayStation. Now in recent weeks they've been trying their best to brick my laptop with unwanted Windows 10 updates that continually fail and have to be rolled back. I'm getting close to the edge with this company...
