  • Andy "Rebirth" Pellerano is a former soldier for the Almighty Latin King Nation, or Latin Kings, one of the largest and most dangerous prison and street gangs in the United States.
Business Insider talks to Pellerano about how members are initiated, what the gang's codes are, and how he got the green light to leave the organization. He covers the rivalry with the Crips and The Folk Nation, and the "Bloodline" allegiance with the Bloods in the prison system. Pellerano was based in New Orleans, where the gang spread to from their home base in Chicago. He discusses how the Latin Kings ran a drug-trafficking network, and other types of crime such as robbery and extortion.
Today, Pellerano is an evangelical minister and musician. He uses hip-hop and rap to give his testimony to young men and to redeem other former members of the Latin Kings.

Almost 10 years of my life I was a king. In my neighborhood you were either Latin king, blood or DDP. There was a couple trinitario sets, but we all beefed with them after they killed one of my close friends at just 16 years old. My family were kings so it was just a normal thing to us growing up. It wasn’t always violence, wasn’t always war, but when it was bad it was really bad. Alot of the times we were just a family keeping each other safe, uplifting each other and trying to find ways to make legal money rather then just on the streets. But eventually all that changed. I learned a lot that shaped me into the person I am today. Eventually it just got to the point where it wasn’t all about being a family anymore and it was constant beef with other blocks. Everyone was losing people left and right. Some of us just grew out of it and moved away to better ourselves. The homies that didn’t are sadly not here anymore.. I got stars all over and the set tatted on me. Also was an idiot and tatted under my eye so im stuck with that mark for ever. Reminds me everyday to keep my kids on the right track and go hard for this legal money so they never have to end up in that environment ever again.

What an outstanding, touching and sincere/authentic (seeming; what do I know) post. I really want to thank you for your share. It was a delight to read. I don't have any gang experience, but I've hustled a living, spent a couple years living outside...seen some things...learned some things....have some choices I'd love to unmake. *Your consideration for your children is inspiring.* I can't speak from any experience with a facial tattoo, so I hope this isn't out of line: *WHATEVER ELSE THEY DO, WHATEVER ELSE THEY SAY, WHATEVER ELSE EVEN THAT OTHERS MAY THINK OF THEM...OUR SCARS DEFINE US...THEY TELL US, AND THE WORLD WHO WE ARE* (note definitions are *DESCRIPTIVE* and not *PRESCRIPTIVE* ...they don't need to play any role in who you become, only inform who you are. *(At least, I need to believe that. Hopefully I'm not coming across as some sketchy rando...)*

Good for you my man and keep up the good work staying on the straight and narrow path. I also grew up around lots of gang members and some of my relatives were Latin Kings. I also grew up seeing the nietas, DDP, Trinitarios, bloods and some crips and other smaller street gangs. THANKFULLY, THANKFULLY I never got involved and NEVER had any interest in the gang life. I'm so grateful to the powers that be that kept me away from that stuff because I've seen too many of my peers fall into the lures and trappings of gang life and 95% of them never ended up anywhere good.

8 tablespoons ice water, or as needed
    FILLING
2 ½ lb granny smith apple, cored, sliced, peeled
    ¾ cup sugar
    2 tablespoons flour
    ½ teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
    ½ lemon
    1 egg, beaten
    1 tablespoon sugar
    TOPPING
1 scoop of vanilla ice cream
    Preparation
    1. In a medium-sized bowl, add the flour and salt. Mix with fork until combined.
    2. Add in cubed butter and break up into flour with a fork. Mixture will still have lumps about the size of small peas.
    3. Gradually add the ice water and continue to mix until the dough starts to come together. You may not need all of the water, but if the dough is too dry then add more. The dough should not be very tacky or sticky.
    4. Work the dough together with your hands and turn out onto a surface. Work into a ball and cover with cling wrap. Refrigerate.
    5. Peel the apples, then core and slice.
    6. In a bowl, add the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and juice from the lemon.
    7. Mix until combined and all apples are coated. Refrigerate.
    8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (200°C).
    9. On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves until round and about ⅛-inch (3 mm) thick.
    10. Roll the dough around the rolling pin and unroll onto a pie dish making sure the dough reaches all edges. Trim extra if necessary.
    11. Pour in apple filling mixture and pat down.
    12. Roll the other half of the dough on top.
    13. Trim the extra dough from the edges and pinch the edges to create a crimp. Make sure edges are sealed together.
    14. Brush the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the sugar.
    15. Cut four slits in the top of the pie to create a vent.
    16. Bake pie for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and no greyish or undercooked pastry remains.
    17. Allow to cool completely before slicing.
    18. Top with ice cream and serve.
    19. Enjoy.

While driving through Texas, I really needed to stretch my legs and take a short walk. I stopped the car on the side of the interstate, in a patch of road that looked just like all the others. I walked about a hundred yards from the road and looked down. There was three single dollar bills just laying there. I always wondered how those bills got there when there was NOTHING around for miles. Perhaps it was a guy like this throwing money out the window?

You understand the depth of being in one accord. Truly touched me also when you said sometime when one will be disciplined they will tell others to look away. Alot of times we watch and add to the beating. I pray God will continue to touch those in gangs and transform their lives for His Glory. This video has alot teaching of what a family should be. The 5 points. Love, honor. respect, obedience and loyalty. Wow God help us to understand what being in One Accord in you Lord is, no matter our location. God bless Insiders for interviewing you and thank you for be vulnerable to share. May God tremendously continue to use you to give hope of change.
