Gordon Smith are producing the very finest electric guitars money can buy at this price point. Hand made here in England and nobody - literally nobody comes close in terms of the unique offering Gordon Smith provide. Why buy a mass produced electric guitar from the States or Korea etc. when you can have a guitar made FOR YOU in any color etc. I have promoted Gordon Smith guitars for at least 20 years now and they are better than they have ever been - a really exciting time in their history.

I have recently ordered a GSG 2 with korina wood body, neck P90 and bridge humbucker, in green to black burst, with black hardware. I reckon it will be (in the words of Douglas Adams) "bad for the eyes". It's great that one can get a guitar handmade to one's one particular specification in this country for well under £2,000 (mine has a lot of options). Buy British, you know you want to!

Think these reviewers are overlooking the margins the venture capital companies that own the big American brands need eating into the specs, and were obsessing over UK overheads.

Have to watch this just for the laughs at the ineptitude of these two. The GS1000 went on to get a perfect score in Guitarist Magazine & Music Radar after being mocked by these two. Andertons no longer sell them - no doubt prefering to promote Chapmans "Made In England" (cough cough) guitars

Restring guitars from 9s to 13s and then set them up accordingly. First round: LPs and strats. Finals: Floyd Rose.

Felt the team were a bit out of their depth here. Single pickup guitars, boutique brands, not-mass-produced, not Gibson/Fender/PRS seemed to throw them. If you were underwhelmed by the discussion of the actual properties of the guitars, search Guitarist magazines Single Pickup guitars video here on UA-cam, or Richards Guitars Gordon Smith video. Somehow I got the feeling if it was the Chapman ML1 Hot Rod model they would have been more enthused (now discontinued). Word is that the finish quality of Gordon Smith has gone up considerably since the new ownership.

Cheers guys, this is one guitar I would love. I currently own 4 Gordon Smith guitars, 2 GS1's, 2 GS2's. I am really happy about what the guys from Northamptonshire have done, they have kept Gordon Smith alive, and introduced some new guitars and have more contact with music shops like yourselves. Keep up the good work...

Quick tip for wrap around bridges, cut the circular ends off a used set of strings and thread the new strings through the ring (that you have cut off), then string the guitar as normal. The ring on each string will act as a spacer and the winds will end up inside the bridge and not poking out of the end.

Thanks, Cap, for this video. Single pickup guitars are so overlooked these days. Some of us in the USA would love to see these hanging in our stores! Gtr Guys, the mystical magic of a single pickup is the way it responds. Yes, there's less magnetic pull & it effects the sound & the picking dynamics. It makes the player adjust his technique & style & this is the reason many don't take kindly to them.

I very nearly bought a GS, years ago, but found a great second hand Gibson LP Jr with a single dog ear P90. It's still my favorite guitar - it's so versatile! It does make you think of volume and tone combinations more and opens up a whole new world of expression and timbre. It would have been nice to have seen more of the the tonal variation available to the GS1000.

19:30 Bad-Cop Chappers, yes do say whatever is necessary. In fact precisely as the owner of a guitar company such insights (plus the neck-joint point) are very valuable. But as RC is the owner of a guitar company recently launching the British Standard line of Chapman Guitars, there is the smallest possibility of conflict of interest almost precisely because the price difference is so great.
There was a notable observation that the GS guitars are cut out by hand. But I for one have yet to see a concrete declaration that the woodwork for the bodies and necks of the Chapman British Standard (different initials might have been advantageous...) guitars are UK produced, whether CNC or not. I expect they are. But it makes a big difference to some potential buyers if luthiers are 'just' assembling parts. Clarity concerning the pickups would be helpful too. And yes we know that many players could not care less. Different market.

EVH also used to say his Frankenstrats had only one pickup because of the 'string pull'/magnetism effect. But, then his signature guitars for Peavey/EBMM/Fender-EVH have two hum buckers. Maybe hotter modern pickups are the compensation?
"You certainly know you've got some wood in your hand." - That's GOLD! I'm shocked Danish Pete didn't rush into the room and collapse in the middle of the carpet.

Gordon Whitham was the 'master Luthier' and made fine guitars, Smith wanted more mass production (money) They parted and for a while Gordon started his own brand called 'Gordy' guitars. They were well made and exotic using some lovely wood. I have a Gordy guitar which Gordon Whitham made for himself in 1980, ish. Quite rare English guitars.

Re - length of winding at the ball end. The same problem happens when you do the wrap around thing on a les paul. The answer is to take the ball end off the old string and thread it onto the new string before you put it on the guitar and presto you no longer have the winding bit hurting you.

Brass nut; good! but did it sustain OK? not sure

    • @pd4165
      @pd4165 6 років тому

Chappers tried that - not very sustainy.
It sounded quite harsh, but that's more likely to be the pickup. Uncompromising. Suits it.
I have a problem with the brass nut. I've known a few people that owned GS guitars way back. The headstock pulls the strings sideways a fair bit and can pop the nut out. But the nut is secured, by screws, to the fretboard.
Yes - screws. Along the grain.
It might have been a cheap week when they built the guitars I saw where the nut pulled over - it was more like sheet brass, so not enough width to prevent toppling.
But that means the screws ripped through the top of the fretboard.
These models seem to have wider nuts so shouldn't suffer the same fate. Regular lubing will help. Even though brass is reckoned to be quite slippery a wound string might start to disintegrate and catch on the metal edge of the nut. It'll be a bit flat so you tune up - and now the string is anchored to the nut and you're using tuners to pull on it. It shouldn't happen and any nut should be in a slot, and string entry angles filed round. I'd prefer to see a zero fret, but those make it more expensive.
Still - screwing along the grain?

I may be wrong, but I have heard that the tone control at 10 is a "no-load" potentiometer. So turning it to 9.5 might reduce the shrillness and make it like other loading tone controls.

That overspray of red on the creme binding is a real eye sore... I noticed quite a few little finishing details like this on the these newer iterations that I've checked out.

Is it the brass nut causing that thick Liverpudlian accent?

Great as always. Changing the subject slightly how about Pete an Mick testing some gypsy jazz guitars? It's not been done yet and could by quite interesting...

A one pickup guitar absolutely sounds different because of magnetic pull on the strings. Also, put an extra ball end over your string to fix the problem of coming in contact of winding on the end of the string

A guitar with no pickups has no hum. Nor does it attract iron filings. Just ask Kenneth Suttee.

I agree, I was really interested in these, im headed out to see if i can try one today. The issue with the bridge has really put me off. No £1k guitar should require you to to do something so it doesn't hurt to play. Im hoping rob is just exaggerating.

Same goes for me and Marilyn. I prefer bald girls. as long as they don't have scabs. Speaking of Gordon Smith, those guitars used to peel like Kojak.

Not at all convinced by the sound of these Gordon Smith guitars, although I was impressed by one back in the late 70s/early 90s -- my mate Gordon, who had been using his ancient Strat, got one and he made it sound good. Last thing I saw, he was back to Fender. Still, it's good to know Ned Callan wasn't the only one. Sigh!

anti-scarf joint snobbery is exactly that. One of those things people who don't know much about timber just come up with thanks to convention or whatever, and run with it. Scarf joints are actually stronger. And if you're one of those folk who think you can hear a difference, you're lying
