Mafate 4's are my fave too and also Speedgoat 5’s (2 pairs) a close second! Glad you like them.

Hi Ryan, great support trail shoe. I agree this shoe looks after your joints. Used them for months, even last night 16ml on slippery muddy trail at night. But sadly the eye lid chain hole lace ripped when tightening up after a few weeks of use. The hole is very close to the edge. I made another hole and cracked on as you do. But Love ❤the shoe all the same.
Will be using them for the UTS 50 Snowdonia. I think this will be perfect for mountain terrain. Al 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️👍

This is the shoe I'm looking to get for UTS 50 Snowdonia as well! I needed the wide in the SG4, I keep getting contrasting info about the width in the midfoot and toebox, don't suppose you needed the SG in wide as a comparison?

What a great review. I have trail shoe agony for my first ultra race coming up and this answered tones of questions I had. Great editing too! Thank you 🙏🏻

Great shoe! Far better than 3 and a normal cushioned tongue. I just ran Rocky 100 in them and saw them all over the course

These were my Trail Shoe of the year for '22 - great shoes - not sure I could do a full 100mi in 'em (due to my toes/foot expansion) but a great 50k-50mi shoe for sure. Comfy, grippy, fantastic - what the Speedgoat dreams of being when it sleeps...

Made the switch from SGs to Mafate this year and am on my third pair. I went 500+ miles on each pair and the uppers look brand new! They are more responsive than the goats and definitely have more life in them. The outsole is in decent shape as well. I would buy my goats in wide, but I'm ok with the Mafate (they don't come in wide). I find that after ~20 miles they fit better to my wider foot.

Thanks for another honest review, Ryan. I'm still running in the Speed 2 as I'm personally not sold on the new uppers since that version (durability concerns) No doubt the 4 is a good shoe and the outsole is so much more aggressive than earlier versions. My Speed 2 have 850km on them with no nupper tears or splits and the outsole still has life in it. Only thing I'd say about the 2 is that the midsole is firmer than the 4, yet it's always been a comfy shoe for me. A friend swears by version 4 though, so each to their own, eh? ;-) Be keen to see you review the Challenger 7...

100% my favorite trail shoe from 2022 going into 2023 and couldn't agree more with your review. After picking them up, they essentially rendered my Speedgoat useless. Overall grip, fit and longevity out way my Speedgoat 5s. It was also my 100 mile shoe of choice for Javelina Jundred last October. The Tecton, which I wear for anything under 50k, just wasn't enough underfoot to get through 100 miles. Glad to hear you chose Hoka and congrats on your success last year! Keep crushing it

How do they compare to the speedgoat 5? I have the problem that the stretchy upper in the SG5 gets so loose after some time that I have to thighten the laces very very much

@@bikeinmotion The single layer Jacquard mesh upper gives me a better lockdown when combined with the older Hoka style toebox (more room) and thicker tongue. I've had no issue of stretch and have never had to re tie during a run. The real win in the Mafate is the dual-density midsole. There is something wonderful about the Profly and EVA midsole. It just simply works. The larger lugs make technical terrain a breeze. I run in the Rockies. (Litebase on this shoe too). I'm going on 300 miles in this shoe and it still feels great and has very little wear (I'm a ligther runner though), whereas my Speedgoats felt flat and dead after 300. Hope this helps :)

@@aaronl8693 Thanks for the info. I liked the Mafate 1 but had problems in the Mafate 2 that ran a tiny bit larger imho. Then came the EVO Speedgoat and I loved that shoe. Went thru two pairs for races but last year no more EVO Speedgoat so I chose the Speedgoat 5 as my racer of choice and well yeah had the problems with the fit that it was too roomy, Had to lace down crazy thight. And also on my last race it started rubbing my ankle. Thats why I'm on the look of a new shoe for this season :)

@@bikeinmotion I loved the EVO Speedgoat as well. Had 3 pairs before it was discontinued. I don't think you can go wrong with the Mafate, at least try it! The price tag is the only thing I'd wish they would fix haha. Best of luck this race season!

Same here. Went to a store to get Speedgoat⁵. "Run" out in Mafate.
      Regrets ? No
Just thinking if I need the SG?
I wanted to try the SG WIDE, but with so many comments on the stretched upper...
I will look elsewhere for a nimble and faster Racers. ASICS Fuji Speed? 🤔

Thx for the review! Love my Speedgoat 5, even ran a 100K with it, but then the cushioning died after 300K. Looking for a better replacement. Do you think the Mafate Speed 4 will last longer?

Thanks for the great review! I've had 7 pairs of the Eco Mafate 2 and have run all four of my 100's in them. I haven't tried the Speed 4's yet. Any thoughts on how these compare to the Nike Zegama's? Thanks!

How do these handle in the rain? Do your feet end up being soaked?

Funny. The color you liked is the color I hate. And opposite with the green ones.

with the tecton x starting to drop in price .., does that muddy the decision process ??
I will keep watching to see if you answer.

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  Рік тому +1

Yeah it makes the decision harder for sure. I would go with the Tecton X for shorter or faster races, good trail conditions. Go with the mafate for longer efforts that need comfort, and better traction. 👍👍

Is the comfort better than the tecton X because mafate lack the carbon plates? Great video

Unbelievably ugly though, these hoka's... Who is in charge of the design over there, these colours omg. Well done Ryan, thanks for the review.
