    Nice review! I love mine. They were awesome on the Arc. I find them super grippy on everything, somehow super bouncy whilst retaining decent ground feel, and I've never been more confident running downhill fast in technical or slippy conditions. Only downside is they take ages to dry (although drain quickly). Also, I've ended up going up half a size in a second pair for a bit more room in the forefoot.

    Been using these since their birth in the early autumn here.Been through mountains,mud,water and Arc 50 recently and they have coped admirably with everything.Clocked up enough miles now and already getting excited about getting another pair.I loved the Evo 2 in these.But the 4 comes out on top easily,the middle of the shoe with it's extra give and less weight makes a huge difference.Great review there Mr 👍, keep up the superb work

    Nice review mate I like them but they’re too narrow rubbing my little toe need to offer a wide version like SPG definitely narrower than the Evo mafate & Tecton X the dynamic Lycra vamp on top doesn’t really stretch much unfortunately the new upper on the Tec X 2 is similar so they’ve ruined that shoe as well!

      I would thoroughly recommend them. I did the Serpent 100k in a pair of Salomon Speedcross 5s in 2021 and they were OK up to about 50 miles and then the blisters came. I now have a pair of Mafates and the comfort is on another level (with comparable grip). Good luck.

      @@marosmikolas624 Personally, I wouldn't normally keep a pair of shoes for 1000km. That said, I still have my Mafates and they're still great shoes (not great grip in REALLY muddy conditions though). Did a 50k recently in them and had no issues at all. I do alternate these with some Exodus Ultras. If by harsh, you mean rocky, then I'm not sure many shoes would comfortably last for 1000km.

    Really like mine, grip is unbelievable and very comfortable fit. They pick up noticeable weight when wet and do pick up mud more than speedgoats due to lugs, but it’s a trade off for superior grip and feel they give you when things get ugly.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  Рік тому

      No worries Matthieu 👍
      Firstly, have you had your knee looked at by a professional to see what's causing the problem? It's hard for shoe to take away knee pain and I'd always try and find out what causing it. I personally think the Mafate midsole is better that the Speedgoat, it feels a bit more responsive and stable 👍

    Uggg, SpeedGoats a much better shoe for me. After two runs in these I am finding them much stiffer, SG's feel more cushioned for me. Maybe because of the sub-zero temps and this midsole needs warmer temps. I do like the outsole better on the Mafate better though. 🇨🇦

    A lot of these branded outsoles are no joke. Recently tested a shoe that didn't have one of the branded (Vibram, Continental, Goodyear) outsoles, and it got shredded by the elements. Maybe it's just me.

    I ran the South Devon Marathon in this just a few days ago and I'm in love with the shoe. Soo much better than the SG5 in my opinion (Better cushion, traction, fit!! And I hope durability although that will be easy (got 250k out of my SG5).
    And I like it more than my Xodus Ultra because of the bottomless cushion except in the most technical rocky stuff where you can singe down the Ultras upper better and have a bit of preciser footing.

    Thanks for the review. I've had a pair since December (managed to get them for £110 from Size? with a post-Xmas discount code). I love them to pieces. Was looking for a distance shoe to replace my Salomon Speedcross 5s and the Mafates are definitely that shoe. So much more comfortable but with a comparable grip (and less of an extreme drop). They're fantastic in muddy condition and the lugs clear reasonably well. Would have no issues with doing 50k+ in them. The toe box is perfect for me (SG4s were far too narrow). If you have the chance to try before you buy (or can send back with a 30 day no quibble guarantee from Hoka or similar) then go for it. (If they fit you) You won't regret it. Will be using them at The Grizzly in Seaton in March and have total confidence in them.

    The Mafate Speed 4s are currently my favorite trail shoe. I used to run in Speed Goat 5s (ee width) but found the midsole foam to be too soft & squishy while the upper was too stretchy/messy, which lead to some ankle rolls. Also, the upper on the SG5 tore in the same spot on 2 separate pairs. The Mafates fit my foot great (I don't need a wide version, which they don't make anyway), it has the best grip/lugs of any shoe I've ran in, perfect amount of tongue padding, great lockdown, descent weight for the amount of protection they offer, and the midsole is fire. I have 150 miles on mine and they work great on the rugged New England trails I run. I also feel like I sit more IN the platform of the shoe, as opposed to more ON the platform of the shoe in the SG5. That, combined with the wide midsole outline gives the shoe great stability for those worrying about rolling an ankle on technical terrain.

    I will be keen to hear your final review, especially considering a comparison with Speedgoat 5 (and Xodus Ultra too or 2:). Both HOKA 2022 newcomers are promising a lot ...and different a lot.
    I did not like the rocker shape and... the narrow fit of the SG5. For both reasons my feet landed in MS4. Sooo, hearing that MS4 feels narrow took me by surprise!
    Now, that made me think:
    - MAFATE upper is not as stretchy as in the SPEEDGOAT
    - people's feet are so much different that describing the width is a very individual thing
    - as the shoes grow from size to size, what happens to their length to width proportions? 🤔
    So, my rather short (UK8) but wide feet, with a high instep require quite a lot of volume from the upper. SG5 felt more than fine, putting them on was as easy as jumping into slippers.
    Yet, my toes were much happier in MS4.
    Another interesting note - Salomon shoes are known for being narrow. So what. The upper in my Speedcross 5 is nice and soft, getting a half size smaller did no harm. Black toe nails? - never.
    Cheers!

    • @Thefifaplayeryant
      @Thefifaplayeryant Рік тому

      Completely agree...I don't think the MS4 is a narrow shoe, but it's not for wieder feet though. I have an average foot but struggle quite often with shoes because of shape (Saucony Peregrine 10, Hoka SG3, Just narrow at the wrong places...), the MS4 is perfect, especially as the toebox opens up. I guess more room would Limit the shoe to more non-technical terrain, as I had to get used to the high stack first.

    Thanks,
    Loyd. Hoka has great design but my Mafate 4s were poorly manufactured: 2 eyeholes tore out after 15 total miles! My Speedgoat 5s lost three lugs by the 3rd run. Norda 001 and the Naked T/r cost more up front but there’s no comparison in terms of quality and therefore value.

    I bought a pair of these in Chamonix last year when they came out. My thoughts were that they'd provide a bit more protection and grip on really rocky terrain, compared to the Speedgoat 5 (which I love but the sole got a bit trashed in the Snowdon skyline last year!). I ended up using them in the Nice 100k UTMB event in September. I'd been expecting glorious Mediterranean sunshine and what we got was cold and pouring rain all day! I really wanted to like these they ran and felt great but had a defect on mine, the 2nd lace eyelet from the top was manufactured too close to the end and ripped through when tightening the laces the second time I wore them. This also happened to a woman while she was trying them on in the shop. I returned mine and went back to the trusty speedgoat. I may try them again if they have sorted this. I did see a few reviews on the Hoka website with people complaining about the same thing, so it may have just been a bad batch. Great video though.

      I must admit this is the first Hoka shoes I have finally chosen to buy. Funny thing is - I went to the local store to get the SpeedGoat 5 and "run away" in Mafate Speed 4!
      What I was hoping was the width. SG5 promises to be a bit more forgiving because of the stretchy upper fabric, but it is still narrowing badly towards the front, squeezing my pinky toes.
      And so I tried the MS4 - a perfect fit from the first try. After a few runs - still perfect.
