Oh yes, this is one of the more cryptic Dio lyrics. The Southern Cross is a star constellation in the Southern hemisphere which sailors used as a guidance back in the day when there were no navigation systems. "Look beyond your own horizons / Sail the ship of signs / And it's the sign of the Southern Cross". So this is probably referring to sailors looking for guidance, the "sailors" being us, humans, looking for guidance when we try to expand our horizon. "If an echo doesn't answer / When it hears a certain sound / Then the beast is free to wander / But never is seen around." There's again the need for guidance - the echo waiting for an answer, and the danger if there is no guidance; the beast is free to wander, the beast being the dark impulses. My take is that it also refers to the power of myth and poems, for example he says "a story told that can't be real / somehow must reflect the truth we feel...", this could refer to legends, which although not true in a literal sense still convey truths on a metaphorical level. Likewise, "from the book, the word is spoken / Whispers from forgotten psalms / Gather all around the young ones / They will make us strong" - not the young ones make us strong, but the psalms make us strong. Perhaps referring us to ancient texts, both biblical and mythical, on our journey, for strength and guidance.
Whenever I write anything in the fantasy genre or a high fantasy setting, "On a small world, west of wonder..." is bound to be either quoted in the prologue or pop up elsewhere. So evocative.
This is the Crux of Sabbath. This is their best and heaviest song! Blew me away when it 1st released, and still does. The whole album is the best work by Sabbath.
@@ЛексХотовский pretty much anything off the 2 best albums of DIO (instead of Ozzy) fronting Black Sabbath... ●'Mob Rules' Album, and ●'Heaven & Hell' Album. Songs,,, Voodoo. Country Girl. Falling off tge edge of the World. Children of the Sea. Lady Evil. Heaven abd Hell. * DIO (Ronnie James Dio) also had a great Solo Career, with many awesome songs too. So also ook at his Albums...●'Holy Diver' Album is the best place to Start, with songs like... Holy Diver. Dont Talk to Strangers. Rainbow in the Dark. Theres too many great songs to mention, DIO is an absolute Rock Icon and treasured by so many HeavyMetal heads. *Another Equally Treasured Rock Icon is the band Judas Priest, specifically from their Late 70s thru to Early 80s ...this was their Peak. The singercRob Halford has equally as good a vocal as Dio, only different (Rob has a 4 octave Vocal Range ...very rare) A great Place to start would be 2 songs that need to be heard together 'Dreamer Deciever' and 'Deciever'. Then try 'You got another thing Coming' at the later part of their (peak) era. Judas Pruest sound and style changed alot over the years, so listening to one album you may not like, then one you may love. So try different things. For variety, try Judas Priest songs... Starbreaker. Victim of Changes. Recklesd. Fever. Saints in Hell. Beyond the Realms of Death. Hell Bent for Leather. Breaking the Law. Living after Midnight. Hot Rockin. Head out to the Highway. Cheater. Heavy Duty. Rock Hard Ride Free. Ive missed HEAPS of other great songs, but those listed will give you a variety of different Sounds of Judas Priest. Both Judas Priest, and Dio(with and without Black Sabbath/Rainbow) are life changing. Give the tracks above a few listens each for time to sink in, and youlle be hooked for life. This era of Rock/HeavyMetal doesnt get much better than this. Theres a few other bands too. Learn these 1st then ask me again and i will update you more. Enjoy!!

@@ЛексХотовский sounds good n wouldve loved this in the 80s, but im not as much into (NEW to me) metal songs. The ones i listen to now are "memories" from my life the 70s n 80s (like a soundtrack to my life). My music tastes have widened in the past 40yrs to include ANY song (from any genre) that inspires me. But i still enjoy the old stuff, even tho i played it all to death. Seen Dio with Sabbath once, JP three times. But, seeing we have similar Rock Tastes (so far), lets expand on that into some other awesome (to me) from the 70s/80s times, songs, that you may enjoy some of. I will just mention Albums (mostly)... ●Warlock -Triumph and Agony (Try song 'All We Are') ●Accept -Balls to the Wall ●Metal Church - The Dark (Try song 'Ton of Bricks') ●Metallica -Ride the Lightning ●Thin Lizzy -Jailbreak (Try dong 'Emerald') ●The Angels -Face to Face ●Rose Tattoo -Rose Tattoo (Try 'Rock'nRoll Outlaw") ●Rose Tattoo -Scarred for Life (Try 'Juice on the Loose) ●Suzi Quatro -Can the Can (Try 'Can the Can'. and 'Get Back Mama') ●ZZ TOP -The 1st 3 Albums are the best (Try 'La Grange'. 'Brown Sugar' (First Album Version), 'Tush') ●Slayer -Reign in Blood ●Onslaught -The Force *I play guitar so alot of my influences come from slow, mean n dirty Riffs.
This is a song about being aware of the signs the invisible world send you , in order to guide your life , or to make it sublime.Understand the symbolism all around us in everyday life. The southern cross was the only thing that guides the mariners into the black night.Still in the darkness of western materialism evil can catch you .Ronnie James Dio was very sensitive to symbolism (his favorite place in Paris was the sacred heart).
This band has so much power, it's truly ridiculous, Ronnie being fired from Blackmore's Rainbow and Ozzy being fired from Black Sabbath, then the shifting of musicians, were a few things that actually made heavy metal music much, much stronger
This is easily one of the best Dio era Sabbath songs🤘 i don’t think he’s talking about about sacrificing children. I think it’s more of a reference to the line before, “Gather around all young ones. They will make us strong” basically the older generation telling the younger generation that they should gather around the songs, cause they will make them against evil and evildoers 😇
@@ЛексХотовский A couple other slower groove track I've always digged somewhat similar to this would be "China White" by Scorpions and "Heavy Duty" by Judas Priest.

Great take. Thanks
The Southern Cross as a star constellation is used on the flags of many countries of the southern hemisphere, like Australia, New Zealand or Brazil.

The note Dio hits after the lead? "Somewhere, nowhere...OOOOOOHHHHH!" is, for me, the greatest note every hit in recorded music.
🤘🏻
Yess still gives me goosebumps
