I keep mine behind my pistol. After 4.5 years in LE, I used my baton for the first time the other day when a dog ran out at us and I think the baton scared it away more than anything else. It was the first time I legitimately pulled it out

I think expandable / telescoping batons for security are great for utility use. Destroy windows, hit people who are not a lethal threat immediately, general pushing, hitting things, reaching things, animal problems, and anything else a gun won’t help or OC won’t help or your bare hands are too at risk. Snapping turtle here got inside, deployed baton, dragged him back off the walk way and away from people. Couldn’t do that with anything else, without serious risk.
Hey, Tommy! I'm entering NC BLET (North Carolina's police academy program) in January. Your videos have been a huge source of information and inspiration for me and my journey ahead. The ultimate goal is to become a K9 unit enforcing drug laws. Keep up the cool content!
Always carried my baton crossdraw on the front of my belt. Never used it in anger (except to pick up and move things that I absolutely did not want to touch even with gloved hands) but that always seemed like the "least worst" place for it.
I’m going with a stiff, slim, durable holster. Just something to hold it in place, slim so it takes up as minimal space as possible; and it’s just there as a utility item and backup to my hard hands skills. Also a decent window breaker in a pinch; good to poke things or people with.
Back in ancient times when I was in a state police academy. Baton goes on the weak hand side thus saving your strong had free for your revolver remember I an older than dirt or pistol now called a sidearm. Flashlight goes behind the baton. Oh yah we either had wooden or plastic batons times change in 40 years. Riot batons were 36 inches with a 1 inch steel ball on each end used to split ribs. Hurts don't. Ha ha laugh at us old guys we was stupid but we got the job done. By the way do it to them before they do it to us God be with you young man. Have a great day and a better tomorrow
I too am an older cop from the dark ages and when I saw you mention the steel balls on the end of the 36" baton reminded me of mine, plus my duty baton by Monadnock Lifetime Products had the ball on one end as well. I also wore my duty baton on the weak side in a ring and usually had my hand on it ready to draw with weak hand for a punch to chest etc. then two handed. Mace "gun" weak side front for quick cross draw. Good ol' days eh!
@@cmcer1995 the bad part was we worked short handed during as I called them vacation season for the older guys. I was taught in use of force training that in confined spaces, with crossdraw holster, pull out but then flick it open towards the ground. Minimises risk of hitting anything you didn't want to hit. Training was for unarmed security.
It's really simple firearm on your strong side. Secondary weapons taser, bat, chemmies weak side. Also put at least one set of cuffs up front in case you're rolling. Good idea to carry at least one set of oversized cuffs. People are getting larger.
I wear my baton infront of my holster, angeled towards the holster and up in a 45 degree. We are stuck with the rotary holster in my company (we get them issued) and placed like that I get full controll at both my baton AND my gun.
I have my old-school monadnock 360 swivel holster that I use for a cross-draw. I've had it for over 14 years and the thing still holds its position no problem. I love the heck out of it :D
Just found your channel recently and I've been sifting through your videos. I've been enjoying your content and you've been a wealth of knowledge, thanks for your help. I as well wear my baton behind my pistol, it's the only place I got for it
Long story short - wear your equipment where you feel most comfortable and, are able to be able to reach for quickly without thinking about it. Practice drawing it out of your holsters from many angles and see what you like best
I'm from the old school, graduated from the police academy in 1995. Back then we wore it behind our side arm , with all of the added accessories such as the Taser, glove patch, etc.. Experiencement and use what works for you, but practice drawing consistently with it in your uniform.
I use an asp roto holster with a 16 inch asp (tiny boy). I have it in front of my holster and rotate it horizontal so that the end cap is against the holster, preventing grabs and making it comfortable when sitting. Then I rotate it to draw.
I'm an animal warden and use the button asp as a bite stick. I keep it on an angle cross draw. Havent tried it on my carrier. Having it totally vertical seems hard to pull straight up & out.
I had my baton and extra mags on HSGI pouches on my plate carrier and my boss told me to put it on my belt and when I asked him why he said, "Because someone can reach for it and also LEOs keep it in their belts." 😑 As if putting it on my belt somehow makes it unreachable... Then he recommended I get a Bianchi nylon duty belt cuz somehow my Safariland belt and gear is somehow not good enough. These security companies crack me up...
I recently bought a vega holster brand baton holster with the tek-lok belt clip and it's doing great for me,to this day. I'd recommend that to other armed security officers like myself and law enforcement officers. Sincerely,a US Army combat veteran.
My ASP scabbard is so tight I cannot pull it out with 1 hand. I cross draw it because I need to hold the scabbard as I draw it. I do have a sidebreaker but it's still pretty tight. I train in martial arts. I am not absent minded enough to draw it out and hit someone next to me. Also ASP trains to extend it upward or downward only and not sideways.
So I've carried both in the ASP style (gun side) and the Monadnock style (weak hand crossdraw), and both work. Behind the pistol as far back as you do, is a problem though, as drawing is a problem if you do use it. To each their own, though.
I have my baton at 11 o'clock at a horizontal angle with the grip towards the buckle. I do unarmed security in Sweden so that's all ive got so i make sure i have full control over it. Been meaning to swap over to a straight stick baton for a while now. Since its our only self defence tool i'd prefer one that actually works when shit really hits the fan seeing as we are alone for the most part.
I keep mine in front of the pistol and have it upside down in the holster (it opens up). So when I draw it I can simply go up where it opens as the arm stops and goes for the swing. Never liked cross placement as it takes a lot of space on the belt. Tried placing it behind the weapon but it doesn't work with my current holster.
i do hospital security, unarmed, just baton, oc, and cuffs, as opposed to law enforcement, we actually use our batons quite a bit. its been a minute since anyone i work with has used it to strike anyone however, working in East Portland you’ll get a lot of people who try pulling knives or other sorts of weapons like that, the audible and visual of a 21 inch asp baton opening seems to intimidate them enough for them to just back off, oc has proven to work in a different way. we use pepper gel due to several incidents where spray was deployed and got back spray on the officer or other observing parties, however most people dont seem as deterred when you pull your oc from your pouch so most of the time when dealing with an aggressive person with a rock or knife, youll end up spraying them simply due to a baton being more audible and visual than a can of oc. i personally carry my baton for a right hand cross draw, my oc goes on my vest almost in the middle but a little to the left. cuffs, one pair on the right side if my back and one pair on the left of my vest, almost where my belly is and the rest of my belt is for a glove pouch, flashlight, keys, some anti, stab and slash gloves on a strap etc.
I’m still working on placement. I had it front on the cross draw side and like but. To easy to get at. So for now it’s behind the hand Gun. I like the cross draw better than the side draw.
What company sells a baton holster you can lock in with holster. I did purchase an ASP holster just for my ASP raptor flashlight and the clip always opens up. It was that rotating holster. I believe they are the same concept clip for all ASP. Not a fan of their stuff so far. Maybe I got a bad clip. For my needs I just carry an over priced concealable baton, or 26 inch baton, OC 4oz and crowd control 1lb pistol grip. So what is a good brand holster for baton with a screw to tighten. Thank you. Great video.
I had a baton taken from my belt at a night club , I retrieved it by letting the oc fly , but is there a level 2 type holster for baton or are there only open top. It’s never my go to but it’s best for breaking up brawls in the night club
If you happen to find level 2 type baton holster could you post a link? Also just curious for your night club security detail what else do you carry besides the ASP?
All I know of are ones that utilize a snap cover, similar to the old style of magazine holsters. Here is an example www.asp-usa.com/collections/baton-cases/products/new-cover-t-scabbard-60cm
Well I have a question because I am not a super model either and I find that putting a tazer on the crossdraw of your weapon is difficult when you have a vest. So I tried putting it on my safe life vest didn’t like it on the vest. So now I have a left hand holster for tazer and weapon on the right. And no extension on the tazer cartridge. So any advice. I am a safe school officer for schools in florida thanks Justin S
in my younger days when I was an FTO, and carrried a PR-24 as an instructor, I wore a MOnadock PR-24 Baton carrier, and would swing the baton up, so it was close to my upper shoulder, and was not imipinged by the seatbelt, so when I needed it, I swung the PR-24 downwards, and at the same time pulled it out with it at the ready.. but then the ASP came out.....

Opposite the gun is the way to go, but not crossdraw IMO. Best to access with the off-hand. I try to keep lethal force on strong side and less lethal on weak side and use that respective hand to work that equipment. You can always transfer the baton to strong hand after the draw if you need to really deliver a beat down. This belt placement also balances the weight of the gun better, being opposite from the gun. Best baton IMO is the RCB Peacekeeper, best holder is the 951 Tactical RCB holder. ASP is flimsy junk by comparison to RCB, and any of the 'no-name' ones sold by Galls and stuff are even worse.
Retired corrections officer and now working armed security. What length ASP Talon baton would recommend? Options are 40cm, 50cm, and the 60cm. I'm just an average size guy. Thanks!
Boy 25 years on the force I have never had mags fall out or handcuffs or my Asp baton! My Asp baton is on my left side next to my Gerber and next to that my mag pouch holder. I carry my cuffs on my right side behind my weapon. My oc spray pouch is in front of my weapon. Then the key holder. I took off my radio holder since our motorola has clips.
Are you wearing a Safelife TUC in this video ? my IIIA+ TUC from Safelife has the 3 lines like a normal class A uniform shirt. The one you are wearing in this video does not, I'm just curious if they offered it without the lines and I didn't notice. btw thanks for all the insight!
So for me the cross draw got it done every time because I could deploy with either hand. So if you’re fighting and get your arm injured or pinned, it remains an option. I want to keep every option on the table for as long as possible. It’s the same reason I had my cuffs up front. If I’m jamming some guy into a wall or the ground, either hand can get the cuff and I can block, parry, grab and strike. If I reach toward my back, I increase my response time. All bad. Once again though in the real world, not every trade off can be optimal. Different bodies, equipment, belts and ponies conspire against that.
If you end up running the Warrior X for your light I highly suggest kobra kydex holsters. I run o lights on duty and this is what I’m using. And tell Safelife to make a high vis vest with molle.
Thanks for this vid! I'm a soldier so I use the baton hardly ever and I was wondering where to place it on my new duty belt. Finally there is no place for it, so I attached it horizontally under the waist bag, which I wear below my lumbar. I think you should to try it, especially when you work with no uniform, cuz nobody see it till the bag is full and you can take the baton both hands
Wow! You carry a LOT of gear. When I started we carried a revolver in a flap holster, handcuffs in pouch, and I had a bullet box with an insert that held 6 loose rounds and one speed loader. I am still an LEO (35th year) but in a leadership role so I don’t normally wear a full rig but even now in modern times I don’t carry half that gear but I do have a very nice Glock 45 in 9mm. My baton is on the support side. I switch between the ASP 16 and 21. Only ever used it once in a use of force situation.
In the past couple years we have mandatory gear than ever. It always seems like a good idea on paper but where the rubber meets the road most of it ends up being back problems
Why not carry the baton in a leg holder I get that there may not be any on the market however I could see a lot of benefits if this was done rather than having a huge bulky gun holster on the leg a proper design could hold the baton in place with out having to worry about it falling out until you grab the baton and pull the baton out would love your thoughts on my idea.
HELLO DEAR SIR' I WEAR MY ASP ON MY LEFT SIDE WEAK SIDE... FIREARM ON RIGHT SIDE STRONG SIDE IN A BREAKAWAY HOLSTER WEAR I CAN PULL IT OUT OR.. JUST RIP IT STRAIGHT DOWN TO DEPLOY IT...AND ALSO A RING FOR STRAIGHT BATON OR PR-24... IF NEEDED
I have a schrade 16" expandable friction lock, then I have an ESP hardened baton and a cheap chrome baton on the way. I'm not a cop, but where I live it's legal to own these, and since I have a fascination with police equipment I like to collect what I legally can.
don't do it. It takes longer to draw, can paralyze you if you fall on your back, and it is less secure (if someone behind you sees it and tries to take it then you probably wont be able to stop them).
Always telling it how it is! Everything is a compromise and everyone has to find the way that works for them. Anyway, I keep my backscratcher at the back of my strong side too. That drawer full of old gear got me laughing too. Anyone who says they don’t have one is lying 😂😂😂
Tommy I would like to get your recommendation for good holster: I work for major security company that is armed security for an country building. There is two (2) officers or there. I have the ability to use any holster that is level two (2) or three (3) for Glock 17. I am right handed & inside 95% of my shift.
"Anything that Fire/EMS does that annoys cops?" How about all the cops that like to park in front of the house when its on fire ;) stay safe, we appreciate you still
Used to use a mononock rotary holder and yes while walking I would hear a clank sound of baton hitting sidewalk. Finally bought a PR-24 baton and it on none dominate hand. Yes, I get lots of T.J. Hooker & L.A.P.D. comments.
Great video. I kept my ASP Baton next to my mag pouch left side being left handed but a right handed shooter don't figure! Lol! I shoot my 12 gage and M-4 Carbine left handed! Lol! I use my OC and Barton quite often! Then came the taser? The worst police weapon ever! People laugh at me and pull out the needles and say WHAT YOU GOT NEXT? LOL.
I see one problem of behind your gun. Some behind you grabbing it and wacking you from behind with it. Having it on your leg where you hand touchs give you an advantage of having it handy but not showing you are going for your gun with your elbow bent. It can surprise the hell out of someone and make then back off quicker because they are not expecting it.
I carry mine in my duty bag.. my policy states if we take a taser we don't have to carry one on us and vice versa. I use to carry it where you do however when I first started. My belt is as limited as it can be per policy. 24 with a 44 year old back😂
If you watch FreeFieldTraining’s duty belt videos or a lot of police officer’s duty belt on the platform, they put their taser their side that doesn’t have their duty pistol.
That's some funny but true stuff! Cross draw, and hit the guy next to you! Lol. I witnessed that happening a few times back in college and my academy days! Lol. This guy drew his ASP cross draw and smoked his training partner right in the face! The instructor had to call 911! Never saw them two again. The guy who got hit quit and sued everyone, the academy, and the guy that hit him. He lost a few teeth, nice concussion, and fat lip! They show that clip in training classes to this day!!!!

I will be a Police Officer. Thanks for the video
I know you've had it for a good while now but what are your opinions on the molle on the front of the carrier vs the slash pockets?
If you end up running the Warrior X for your light I highly suggest kobra kydex holsters. I run o lights on duty and this is what I’m using. And tell Safelife to make a high vis vest with molle.
Thanks for this vid! I'm a soldier so I use the baton hardly ever and I was wondering where to place it on my new duty belt. Finally there is no place for it, so I attached it horizontally under the waist bag, which I wear below my lumbar. I think you should to try it, especially when you work with no uniform, cuz nobody see it till the bag is full and you can take the baton both hands
I always run mine behind my holster and my tdi between the holster and belt.
Ok...But like, that drawing on the white board behind you is 10/10. Your art has gotten better since you first started doing these videos lmao
Have u had to use your baton if so how did it effect suspect and did it break sir?
Batons make the best back scratchers
Could You do How to video on batons i just got a ASP baton and still learning it especially closing it.
Like bare devil
Have you tried the Streamlight Stinger HPL and how does it compare to your regular Stinger?
HELLO DEAR SIR'
I WEAR MY ASP ON MY LEFT SIDE WEAK SIDE... FIREARM ON RIGHT SIDE STRONG SIDE IN A BREAKAWAY HOLSTER WEAR I CAN PULL IT OUT OR.. JUST RIP IT STRAIGHT DOWN TO DEPLOY IT...AND ALSO A RING FOR STRAIGHT BATON OR PR-24... IF NEEDED
06:00 - when do you insert your rifle plate into your body armor? Are you worried about your spine because of the weight compressig your vertebras?
I've heard him say in a past video that when he retrieves his rifle he puts on the plate
They weigh very little and are hardly noticeable.
I have a schrade 16" expandable friction lock, then I have an ESP hardened baton and a cheap chrome baton on the way.
I'm not a cop, but where I live it's legal to own these, and since I have a fascination with police equipment I like to collect what I legally can.
This may be a dumb question, but would you be able to put the baton on your shoulder and cross draw that way?
First video ever on the channel where we see you in full gear, or? I had been waiting tor this!
Hy. What is the baton model and manufacturer? Thanks
You could always carry Portland style: ALWAYS deployed. Also, on a drop rig in front of the pistol puts the baton in a very accessible position.
what would be better a 16" or 21"? currently have a 21" Monadnock expandable straight baton thinking about switching to a 16"..
21” baton is better.
Black jacks were for a different time. But they were effective to stop unarmed persons. Old school non lethal.
Hey Tommy what are your thoughts on sob (small of back) for concealed carry and do you think that it is a viable option to consider
don't do it. It takes longer to draw, can paralyze you if you fall on your back, and it is less secure (if someone behind you sees it and tries to take it then you probably wont be able to stop them).
another advantage of that placement is when u u
open it up ur ready to swing while deploying
Always telling it how it is! Everything is a compromise and everyone has to find the way that works for them. Anyway, I keep my backscratcher at the back of my strong side too.
That drawer full of old gear got me laughing too. Anyone who says they don’t have one is lying 😂😂😂
I keep my baton cross draw
For my firearm I'm left handed, so my taser is crosdraw and my baton is behind my taser so It doesn't prevent me from accessing my baton.
Why not have it so you can draw it over the shoulder like drawing an arrow to put in a bow ?
Sehr interessant Danke!
Where do you get them
Always keep my baton behind my holster. It works for me.
We don't wear batons. I think our cpl. Does because he just hasn't taken it off yet. Good setup
Damn baton's are kind of a pain in the ass
Tommy
I would like to get your recommendation for good holster: I work for major security company that is armed security for an country building. There is two (2) officers or there. I have the ability to use any holster that is level two (2) or three (3) for Glock 17. I am right handed & inside 95% of my shift.
Safariland 6360
@@paulkirk9289 I have this holster that I recently purchased from eBay. I hope I will like it.
Uncle mikes law enforcement
In my car. I used to carry behind my pistol.
Also running an Olight Warrior X as my tracking light
"Anything that Fire/EMS does that annoys cops?" How about all the cops that like to park in front of the house when its on fire ;) stay safe, we appreciate you still
Well detailed video thank you
Used to use a mononock rotary holder and yes while walking I would hear a clank sound of baton hitting sidewalk.
LOL.
Does anyone still use the PR-24?
You should really try the bonowi eka, that baton strikes mostly like a riot baton.
I carried a PR 24 on my left side with rotating holder when I was a Security Officer
nice video
I see one problem of behind your gun.
Some behind you grabbing it and wacking you from behind with it.
Having it on your leg where you hand touchs give you an advantage of having it handy but not showing you are going for your gun with your elbow bent.
It can surprise the hell out of someone and make then back off quicker because they are not expecting it.
I carry mine in my duty bag.. my policy states if we take a taser we don't have to carry one on us and vice versa. I use to carry it where you do however when I first started. My belt is as limited as it can be per policy. 24 with a 44 year old back😂
To cops, I’m not one. I love you guys.
What about behind taser
If you watch FreeFieldTraining’s duty belt videos or a lot of police officer’s duty belt on the platform, they put their taser their side that doesn’t have their duty pistol.
God bless you I back the blue I plan on doing law enforcement after the military not in yet but I will do it after, after a 5 year contract
