    See, the thing is, the "rebel council" wasn't just refusing to attack scarif, they were flat-out saying "Opposing this new superweapon is impossible, the rebellion is over, we must immediately surrender to the empire". Mr. Space Spaniard wasn't betraying anything; he recognized, as they all did, that their unauthorized suicide mission was the only chance for the rebellion to continue existing at all. So did mon mothma; she didn't refuse to sanction it out of mistrust of jin, but because she didn't think the attack could succeed with only a small portion of her fleet (though, of course, said small portion barely scraped by in the end, but she had no way of knowing that would happen.)

    I get why people don't like Jyn. Personally, I love the presentation of a protagonist who isn't some super important special Chosen One. I like the film focusing on a person who is a _victim_ of the Empire, suffering under the problems and oppression this regime causes, who would rather just go hide under a rock and has to be gradually convinced to fight against them. I like that Jyn's character arc goes from watching her mother throw her life away pointlessly in defiance of an unstoppable military machine to...doing exactly that herself.

      @midgetydeath which is a normal problem with loose insurgent groups. Also that military discipline doesn't develope the moment you enter the military. It takes a 2 to 3 month bootcamp of 16 hour days 7 days a week of constant correction and supervision. So that's very believable.

    • @johnmccarron7066

      @midgetydeath Yes and no. Even in Legends, the Rebel Alliance was originally various groups working together, but not unified. One of the big themes in Alliance history at that time was Mon Mothma unifying the Alliance, and how there were some leaders (like Garm Bel Iblis) who felt very threatened by that.

      It may of helped at the beginning of the operation but they would noticed the unauthorized data extraction so a distraction which in this case was a full on assault it would of been wise though to acquire a second ship to board one of the two star Destroyers to take control of the communications relays and deploy a signal through Rebel Alliance frequencies 2 multiple different locations including an rebel outpost to avoid Revealing the main base on Yavin. This would reduce the amount of heat the troops on the ground have because command will have to divide Focus to the boarding party in all bits which would save a hell of a lot of ships that must have been destroyed in orbit by Darth Vader. Also a star Destroyer has access to officicers so force them to call forces on the ground they need reinforcements in which ground troops can intercept allowing rebles to escape next troops on the destroyer raid the hanger bay steal a shuttle and tarkin will end krenic on scarif.

    The Rebellion wasn't monolith with a normal command structure. Each individual cell and its leadership had final word on where, when, and if, their forces would be engaged. It's the same idea that terrorist organisations use today. Each cell is separate from the one above and the one below. The overall strategic goal is the same for all, but tactics and targets are set by the individual cells. If larger targets require assistance to engage, cell leadership would contact go betweens to coordinate multi group attacks. While not the best way to set up a military organisation, it is the best way to set up a resistance/rebellion organisation.

    • @bnadit1949
      @bnadit1949 7 років тому +13

      That is exactly what the rebellion is too, a terrorist group in the eyes of the Empire. The rank structure is not really formal as we see a General leading a fleet while the Naval Commander is telling him not to attack. (Rebels S3 Finale) In a real military while the General would out-rank the Commander he would not be so bold as to defy the Naval Officers advice as the loss of NAVAL ships would get back to upper level command and he would be punished. It is one thing to fight on the ground, but space is a whole other monster.
      Star Wars has a lot of good things going for it, Military structure isn't one of them. If people desired that they would fund a damn Halo movie.

    • @nihluxler8823
      @nihluxler8823 7 років тому +3

      Wiz Bud That's cute and all, but the rebellion still has a centralized command structure, including a main headquarter and a democratic council, plus from the film itself, they don't look kindly upon divergent branches of the movement they consider too radical.
      An organization like that could work only if the separate cells couldn't compromise one another, but most of those guys aren't researched criminals, they're senators and public figures representing planets or even systems. They obviously have a lot more to lose than some group of asshole living in a cave.

    • @wizbud4259
      @wizbud4259 7 років тому +6

      Nihl Uxler the Rebellion Centralized Command controlled each individual cell ? I was under the impression that the Rebels Leadership were loosely knit, though undivided, and only came together en masse to discuss the appearance of a defecting pilot and the rumor of a secret project run by Erso. Am I wrong ?

    • @bnadit1949
      @bnadit1949 7 років тому +8

      The Rebellion did have a centralized command, but so did Al Qaeda. Look how they operate. Now the Rebellion is certainly more organized than Al Qaeda, but they are still loosely linked and have bias towards their own home-worlds rather than a central government (Watch Star Wars Rebels for reference).
      And radicalism is exactly what the Rebellion didn't want at the time, they were trying to create a new government that would help everyone, but they can't do that if everyone is just as afraid of them as they were of the Empire.

    • @wizbud4259
      @wizbud4259 7 років тому +1

      Rolando Santiago Hmm, that seems a bit out of the norm for a Joint Forces Command. The CO is the CO. For example, General Montgomery was a British General under the command of a US General in Eisenhower. Monty couldn't just plan Market Garden and call up the Canadian General under Patton and say, 'Let's roll'. There would be repercussions, most likely loss of command or at the very least a rift between officers within the command structure that could/would lead to an erosion of the coalition.

  • @sorrrbet4923

    This is where the novelisation comes in handy, because is outlines a lot of what you said and gives reasons.
    For example, Krennic taking command because Ramda (the garrison commander) was a fool.
    Also explains why Cassian went with Jyn. It was because he already loved her. He’d loved her since Jedha, and that was the only reason he’d saved her from the DS. It was the same reason he saved Chirrut and Baze, as well. Also the same reason why he didn’t kill Galen when he had the chance.

      Also, the planet had a small fleet of two destroyers because it would be less noticeable. The Senate would notice and question why a large fleet is just sitting over Scarif, a seemingly unimportant planet to the Empire. It was meant to be inconspicuous to the government with the exception of the few individuals aware of the project in its entirety.

    • @amransom26
      @amransom26 7 років тому +22

      goldfishprime Right, the garrison stationed on and above Scarif had become complacent. Nothing ever happened there because no one even knew the base existed. Not an excuse for a military to be so caught off guard on a high priority base but it does happen.

    • @goldfishprime
      @goldfishprime 7 років тому +7

      Well, the reason I said that was because Krennic saw the Imperial officers there were either in complete shock or didn't know how to react, so he took command. In the heat of battle like that, you don't want to switch your command in and out, it would just cause confusion in the ranks. Not to mention, the Imperial command structure does seem to be different than our own, as Krennic was still a uniformed Imperial, he wasn't some civilian contractor.

    • @amransom26
      @amransom26 7 років тому +2

      goldfishprime yes that’s true, I wasn’t trying to disagree or anything if that what it seemed like. And really, Krennic wasn’t a member of the military, he was in the Republic’s and later the Empire’s Advance Weapon Research as its Director but he had no true military authority. His position as Director of the weapon project is the only reason most obeyed his command although they don’t have to, especially higher ranked members.

  • @ttlpwn34
    @ttlpwn34 7 років тому +5

    To be fair, no one else at Scarif's ground base was doing anything after the explosions started. Krennic looked at each and every officer in the room expecting them to do their jobs, but instead they're all standing there with their mouths open, so we get, "Are you blind!? Deploy the garrison!" If I remember correctly, Krennic doesn't really take command at all after that point, he gives the garrison a squad of his Death Troopers and heads over to inspect the archives, which was his original reason for traveling there in the first place. As for why they failed in every other aspect like not closing the shield fast enough - because they did end up closing the shield - was because as we've already seen, the officers stationed at a tropical research base protected by a PLANETARY shield aren't the most battle hardened and experienced officers the Empire has to offer.

    Also, I think Cassian as the professional army spec ops officer had a plan, I think Jyn's speech was just about motivation rather than the plan. She does not convey confidence, something which is also important to soldiers following someone into battle with their lives, but there is also a history of some military commanders even being honest with their fears, especially on things like probable suicide missions by insurgents. In certain strategic situations such as that, I think fear and uncertainty is even sometimes important to acknowledge and address which is what I think Jyn is doing in her brief speech.

      Infuriatingly stupid moment. Zero regard for how collisions work. How could two of the exact same ship collide with each other at such low speed and there be such a ridiculous difference in damage sustained? At worst the two ISDs would become dangerously mated and take a lot of work untangling. One ISD might has well have turned into a lightsaber.
      Top it off with them of course crashing in the most convenient direction for the plot. Why on earth would they immediately just spear down?

    Another strategy the Rebels should of used was concentrate the fire on the tie hangers on the shield gate when the ties were being launched. With no shields and little room to maneuver the Rebel fleet could of inflicted heavy damage to Imperial defense forces leaving there fighter support to carry on anti capital ship runs unhindered.

    I have an explanation for the Y-wings: the star destroyers and fighters use their weapons as a screen to prevent bombers from doing what they did. The bombers found an “opening” in the screen of defensive fire to launch their torpedoes at close range. Also, the star destroyer had one of its shield generators damaged increasing its susceptibility to ion or other attacks.

    The film trope of the rebellious small group define orders and taking on a much larger well organized military force is just about as old as America and pays homage to The romanticized national memory of the American Revolution, in that an underdog can take on anything if they want it bad enough. Of course the cold reality is that rarely if ever is actually the case because if it were then nations that spend militaries are wasting billions if not trillions of dollars maintaining personal and equipment capable of repelling and or conducting an invasion.
    What’s more, films like these have the additional troupe of the romanticize the martyr that upholds the idea that the ends justify the means.
    Both of these tropes fly in the face of reality and civilization as a whole (which is probably why they are rarely seen outside of war films.
    To give a bit of context to what I mean when historians look at ancient cultures and civilizations, when it comes to the military aspect of that civilization they check how they fought. If the warriors fought as individuals or small groups looking for personal glory that was typically a sign that the civilization as a whole wasn’t that far advanced and was likely still very tribal (not unlike the rebellion before the battle of Yavin being largely splinter groups that really didn’t work with each other but still had a common cause). By comparison if the individual fought in dedicated ranks, forsaking personal glory for a larger goal as well as watching the back of their fellow soldiers not unlike the Spartans at Thermopylae or the Roman military through much of its history then its generally understood that civilization had reached a certain technological, military and cultural level that what is undeniably higher them their tribal counterpart.
    In short, if our own history is the guideline, the empire should’ve crushed the rebellion without even needing to call it a war... but you know, plot armor and suspension of reality are key ingredients in fiction... and it was deeply satisfying seeing Vader be the badass he always was.

    • @BrokenEyes00
      @BrokenEyes00 7 років тому +5

      Alex Turlais that’s actually been disproven that America lost the Vietnam war due to the guerrilla tactics. The Tet Offensive had effectively broken their back, it wasn’t until they get reinforcements from the north that American troops started to get pushed back.
      In an ironic twist, Vietnam mirrored the American Revolution in many respects. The American militia was hardly effective against the British troops until they started to get training from mercenaries and ultimately until the French arrived, The exact same situation occurred in Vietnam, the grillers we’re not that effective against the American military machine until reinforcements arrived. It is very likely that because of the similarities and our own bias towards rooting for the underdog that we tend to forget the fact that the French helped the American “gorilla” just as much as the north Vietnam helped the Vietcong “gorilla”.
      A cynic would call films like rogue one, and it’s a said earlier many other American war films, borderline propaganda, at the very least it has caused many people to think that gorilla tactics are actually superior to a well trained and equipped military. I’ll gorilla tactics certainly will cause headaches, and even a good well placed one or two operations will cause setbacks, they ultimately will not win the war without reinforcements from a legitimate military that can overwhelm the battlefield with numbers, superior weaponry and tactics that are simply impossible in small numbers.

      I agree with you there but I disagree with your history lesson. Some cultures including ancient Greece valued personal honor and glory in combat without being tribal or unadvanced it sometimes held political or religious significance to them.

      VindirWefent just to point It out, the Greek city states were conquered by the Roman Empire.
      That being said I don’t disagree with your point either. It’s an ancient practice of coming back the war hero and assuming office, One universal he practiced and still practiced. What I am referring to however is how a culture fights says a lot about them. The more sophisticated their cultures technology is, the better they are able to outfit there Warriors with standardized equipment (mass production) which in turn means the training of said warriors can be standardized as well. Stand weapons and tactics in turn means that discipline is more essential to maximize both, ultimately leading the warrior to become a soldier (soldier for the longest time and throughout human history, typically was paid with the spoils of war, which is for more lucrative than having the satisfaction of being victorious in battle, which doesn’t bring the bacon home.

    • @GeneralBlackNorway
      @GeneralBlackNorway 7 років тому +3

      Broken Eyes What you say is true, an organised military is generally going to perform much better than a disorganized group of rebels. However guerrilla tactics can be very effective if applied right by competent fighters. The roman military were for example defeated in ambush at the Teutoburg Forest, by Germanic tribes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Teutoburg_Forest
      Julius Cesar also had big troubles defeating the Gauls when united against the Romans. In both cases decentralized organisations went against an organised military force. In the ambush the Romans were annihilated completely, and in Gaul the Romans were hard pressed and not far away from defeat, but pulled through.
      Organisation does play a big part, but the competencies of the warriors plays a large role too. In Both Vietnam and Afghanistan the Americans and Russians suffered eventual defeat. As you pointed out, the key is outside influence in training and resources.
      In Star Wars lore the early rebellions were easily crushed by the imperial military forces as they were not organised well enough, were big enough, lacked support and did not apply guerrilla tactics and strategy correctly. Also they faced the seasoned veterans of the clone wars, while the galaxy were tiered of war support was hard to get. However as time went on the empire acquired a massive military expansion to conduct more direct control of the galaxy, thus watering out their competent seasoned veterans with inexperienced individuals. In addition the clone war veterans were retiring lowering the quality of the imperial military quite a bit. As time passes the ineffective rebels were eliminated while seasoned veterans emerged as well as returning war veterans on the separatist side joining in.
      They increasingly gathered local support and galaxy wide support and grew from local small rebel cells into a larger more organised rebellion. In the film we see the relatively small gathering of all the biggest rebellions, but still most of the rebels remained as local freedom fighters. Over time this large pool of local fighters would join in the central rebellion that became increasingly better equipped and better organised. After the destruction of the death star the fight against the empire would seem less hopeless and inspire a lot of people to join in. Thus any losses can be sustained by the rebels as they keep hitting the empire everywhere.
      The Empire would respond with an all out war hunting down the central rebels where ever they gathered, neglecting the local support they had. With support from big players like the Mon Calamari they would be supplied with enough ships to eventually face the empire in open battle. The constant hits on the empire would demoralize their forces and many would jump over to the rebellion. Eventually the empire became so undermined that it fractured into pieces, especially after the death of Palpatine and Vader, the central imperial leadership were gone with them that held the empire together. When the empire could only gather parts of their forces under a single banner the rebellion was able to defeat them after many years of fighting. The remaining imperial loyalists would flee to the unknown regions and become the First Order.
      I think one big factor in the fall of the empire is that Palpatine disbanded the senate and gave power to the local governors. It's not inconceivable that under growing support for the rebellion, some governors would either secretly support the rebellion as well or join them officially to save their own skin under the threat of local uprisings. This would allow the rebellion a lot of potential resources and initiative to further hit home the idea of a republic and that the empire was dying. This is a self reinforcing idea that would spread like a domino effect. Most people in the empire were not particularly strong in the faith that the empire brought order and stability any better than a republic. Only the hardcore loyalist would hold on to the idea of the empire. Thus in the end only a minor portion of the empire were actually willing to fight for it, so it's not hard to see why the empire would fracture.
      Also a nice little example from modern history. The Islamic state that was comprised of a lot of veteran fighters of the Iraqi former military, would defeat the new Iraqi military, showing that a seasoned fighting force can assemble and defeat a state funded one, but filled with inexperienced unmotivated soldiers.

    To be fair, the lack of screening ships on the Imperiums side was fairly easily explained. Given the Tarkin Doctrine they put everything into massive intimidating ships. They simply didnt have these smaller ships beyond certain specialized roles (like covert transports), and relied on a shitton Tie fighters and large amounts of point defense weapons to offset the lack of smaller screening vessels.

I get that we had to have the goodbye moment but they could have just had the death star show up a bit later. In fact making both the characters and audience think the good guys would live only for the death star to jump out of hyperspace and vaporize them would have given more weight to their deaths.

    2) i don't think Krennic was supposed to be in charge, but he's an egomaniac and was already upset, so he probably assumed command and all of the officers just rolled with it like the power bottoms they are.
    3) you pointed out that the ISDs had no supporting ships. all i can say to that is RIGHT!? WHERE'S THE REST OF THEIR FLEET!? THEY ARE CAPITAL SHIPS. C A P I T A L SHIPS. EVEN SSDs NEED SUPPORT SHIPS BUT YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU CAN'T SPARE 1 FUCKING CRUISER TO SUPPORT THEM? NOT 1 CORVETTE? ISDs ARE EXPENSIVE
    4) i think the TIE screen was preventing the Y-Wings from deploying their ion torpedos until they saw an opening to go in. at least that's what i thought it was because they said "i see an opening!" or something along those lines.

    • @konac7191
      @konac7191 7 років тому

      i have 2 problems with the scene
      1) the ISDs still need support ships. they're good in a fight, but all alone the rebels can exploit weaknesses like, say, if the fighter screen has an opening and a squadron of bombers go right through. even the fleet thrawn was assigned to as a lieutenant was like 3-4 cruisers and 1 ISD instead of 2 ISDs. like, why not send the executor off on its own? because 8-10 ships are better than 2, all other factors equal.
      2) as a capital ship, ISDs are already assigned to their own fleets. these two seem to have just popped out of nowhere, so there's probably a fleet somewhere down 2 ISDs and it's just a bunch of frigates.

I know we've got the Gozanti class and the old Arquitens class crusiers from the clone wars era, and the interdictors, but i can't see any of them hanging out for guard duty. Are there any others? Nebulan B's and Corellian Corvettes were the typical escort ships for the Empire. There where others that came up in the RPG put out by West End Games in the 80's and 90's, but I don't think they were ever made cannon.

    of all the wrong things in this movie, the most ridiculous thing is how some blind guy can avoid a bunch of highly trianed death troopers, and the excuse people use is "He is force sensitive". The jedi at the jedi temple were force sensitive, but we all know what happened to them.

      Sorry for the long reply.
      Chirrut Imwe wasn't force sensitive though some like to believe he was. He had the skills he had because he has rigorously honed his body through intense physical and mental discipline [from Star Wars Databank: www.starwars.com/databank/chirrut-imwe]. He was one of the Guardians of the Whills, an order of spiritual warrior-monks and he was attuned to the Force in a way that most people were not. However, not all Guardians were like Chirrut. I can imagine after being trialled and tested by the hardships of the Enpire, some lost their way/faith. For example, Baze was "once the most devoted Guradian of them all". Now imagine if you lived in that time. Wouldn't you wonder, if the force was even real? Why did it let everything happen and why did people like the Jedi who had the force let the Empire take over? Couldn't it have been prevented? Instead, you are now living a harsh life under the rule of the Empire. Your faith can be shaken and you begin to doubt if the force actually exists. Baze lost his faith but Chirrut kept believing in the force.
      Chirrut's chant "I am one with the force and the force is with me" is some sort of prayer. I say that because he chanted those words when they were in a cell, being held by Saw in Jedha and Baze mocked him saying "he's praying for the door to open". Chirrut responded, "it bothers him because he knows it's possible". Chirrut chanted those same words when he was walking over to the master switch on Scarif. The force shielded him from the shots being fired at him just like it did for Luke in episode 4 when Vader couldn't shoot Luke's x-wing down. The only difference is Luke didn't have to chant anything because the force was naturally strong with him.
      And as for the Jedi in the temple? It's not like the Jedi didn't go down without a fight. They were clearly out-numbered and death couldn't be avoided. And Chirrut's victory wasn't long-lived because he died shortly after he accomplished his goal.
      Rogue One was refreshing because we got to see a different perspective of the force from people who are non-force sensitive and how they viewed it and use it. Right from the start, we saw Jyn's mom Lyra give her a necklace with a kyber crystal and told her to "trust the force" and later in the movie we saw Jyn pray when she held the necklace in her hand and closed her eyes when they were transmitting the clearance code to enter Scarif. And it worked. So I don't think it was "ridiculous", it's a powerful and underappreciated scnene.

    I feel that the things wrong with the Battle of Scarif are largely confirmed by you to be smaller things overall, and I don't disagree with most of the things you pointed out. Although I do have some thoughts....
    Maybe you just meant it as a joke, but otherwise I completely fail to see Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor hooking up and don't understand how some are serious about this if being critically analytical of their characters. The final moment to them seemed to me to be more this moment of penance between them, going out in peace for having accomplished something together in the name of a just cause they mutually shared. Remember that Cassian Andor was going to ASSASSINATE Jyn Erso's father! He and the Rebel High Command lied to her and used her to this end. This would be sort of an alienation point, and I think give credence to what you said about a Rebel command structure not necessarily wanting to go off of Jyn's word, but while I can imagine change of conscience on Cassian's part during his short time with Jyn, I think romance between them is a massive and uncomfortable stretch from setting out to murder her dad only recently (and the Alliance mission on Eadu did ultimately get him killed).
    So that's my biggest critique of this video. No way in hell would Jyn have a romantic interest in Cassian, but I absolutely see this very pure and beautiful moment of redemption between the two over what they did together on Scarif.

      +Katelyn O`Brien hehe you’re right I was just kind of thinking maybe right before hey died they’d want to make an emotional connection. But that’s just me.

    • @katelynobrien7415
      @katelynobrien7415 7 років тому

      Yeah, I guess I can see them doing more with an emotional connection. I dunno. I kind of liked the embrace I saw and the way it happened after Cassian actually pulled Jyn away from spending her final moments with a mind focused on vengeance against Krennic, who perhaps symbolically gets blasted away on his tower while Cassian and Jyn seem to embrace in a redemptive moment on the beach before going out together as comrades in the end.
      These characters get a lot of criticism for their supposed lack of development in a movie definitely structured differently from all of the other Star Wars movies, and they did take some depth away from Jyn's character I've heard with some of the cuts made to the film, but there are certain details that I've caught after rewatching the film a few times that make me particularly like the movie and relate with Jyn probably more than I do with Leia or Rey (although Rey has more development coming as well).
      In honesty, I think it also worked to the movie's favor unintentionally that it also came out after the election of Donald Trump, leaving a lot of people in the mood to root for the cause of a group of rebels who the movie made me feel for more than any of the other Star Wars films.
      Anyway, as someone that has long followed military history, works for defense, and had originally been planning on entering the military, keep up all of the strategy and tactics videos which I absolutely love! My favorite military personnel in Star Wars have always been the Rebel pilots, because I think they are by far the crux of an insurgency against the Empire's infrastructure across an entire galaxy. The Rebellion certainly can't afford often to face the Empire head-on in a lot of fleet battles (which you addressed well in your Endor video), which I would guess factors heavily into why it outfits very independent starfighter pilots with hyperdrives and shields. Plus, in the books at least, they seem to have to be able to interact with many vastly different cultures across the various star systems to wage this kind of asymmetric warfare. Kind of like special forces, but with X-Wings instead of M4s, though I might also imagine older Z-95s and maybe Y-Wings valuable even for perhaps blending in more with certain groups for specific missions like smuggling or providing planetary air support for some insurgent cells.

  • @wheresgolberg

    Jyn's speech highlights the key concept of the film, hope. The whole movie is about hope. Jyn and Cassian know its a suicide mission but are going in anyway. They are against overwhelming odds but it is the only way for the Death Star secret to get exposed. They know they won't be the ones destroying the Death Star but hope that their sacrifice means someone else will.

    I think it was a turning point for the rebellion is why they rest followed Jyn. It was either swing for the fences or it was over. As some said they should scatter and /or surrender. Most of that followed Jyn were shown in the movie that they had nothing to lose or they felt like they were driven by a higher power. A fearless kid wanting to restore her family at all costs, some jaded and tired warriors that want to make a difference, a scared not so sure pilot that scarified his past to join, a monk and his guardian angle, etc, etc. This was their last gasp that inspired the rebellion to go on by their sacrifice.
