I dont understand what makes Jake think an armada wont show up. That grey rock is the key to humanity's survival, all Jake did was buy the navi a decade or two at most, they will lose eventually. If anything, he doomed the navi by forcing humanity's hand into more extreme action.

This was simple math simply done. The only underestimation was the localised fauna and an as yet unidentified planet-wide hivemind. I'm not certain even the survivors truly grasp this is what they're dealing with, but boy howdy if a planet-cracking armada doesn't come back considering this super conductor is key to human space colonisation, this whole narrative they want to explore is a bust.

By the end of the movie, Jake is so mentally compromised by the planetary hive mind that he is no longer thinking. He is simply a living extension of the hivemind's will, brainwashed by direct stimulation of his pleasure centers and extensive biofeed back. He's no longer doing what Jake would do, or thinking what Jake would think, he's acting and thinking like the Hivemind and expressing the Hivemind's savage will. As such, he's really incapable of comprehending how his own race will really think or what they are capable of, because the Hivemind isn't capable of that. The Hivemind isn't even really able to conceive what the human race is. Remember, to the hivemind all the species on the planet are only cells and tools of itself. It isn't able to conceive of humanity at all until it Jake helps it conceive of Humanity as a disease of a dead mind similar to itself. It's not clear however that it is really capable of conceiving other planets, worlds, stars, much less technology. And I strongly suspect over time Jake is losing that ability himself.

@@celebrim1 Good points, it makes sense since it seams he's losing his connection to his own species. It's kind of unsettling how fast Grace believed all the navi spiritual stuff as soon as her mind became attached to the planetary bio intelligence. She was the most intelligent of all of that group.

    • @exwhyzee276
      @exwhyzee276 5 років тому +186

Maybe that is the point - the hivemind is so domineering, a consciousness beyond the scope of human understanding, that we were totally unprepared this was the case for what we were dealing with. So of course, any access with that hivemind meant immediate consciousness intrusion, much like what the navi were doing to the wildlife when taking them over. The moment the hivemind noticed something new, it focused everything into taking it over like white blood cells attacking something foreign. Assimilation followed not long after, as the hivemind comprehended only extensions of foreign consciousness, but not what the foreign consciousness wanted.
I think the hivemind's mistake as evidenced by the movie was presuming humans have a higher connection, so in taking over Grace and Jake, it hoped to in turn take a red hot run at our entire species - the invading forms. That is why we never see planetary unification against humans until the very, very end, when in a shit-stained panic the planet itself lashes out in the last moments with everything it has. It lets the human survivors leave because it's confused at what happened. Information gleaned from grace and Jake tells it that there would be more coming if everyone were to die, however it hasn't factored in cataclysmic atro-events which would be a very real possibility for space travel. Shit is dangerous af, yo. In letting humans go, it hopes to spread a warning to the species it doesn't understand. The species on the brink, with the super-conductor rock the hivemind lives on. The hivemind has proven itself entirely incapable of negotiation or even rudimentary understanding of inter-species communication.
Such a shame it won't realise what is going on when in a decade or two, massive ships enter atmosphere across the planet, and begin tunneling to the core. The hivemind will only know the humans have returns, and still won't understand when the drills detonate with enough nuclear energy to destabilise the planet's core, and set off seismic so tremendous it rips the planet into segments. The last thing the hivemind sees is flashes from the sky - ships utilising two small chunks of unobtainium as a force multiplier for two warheads designed to ignite the atmosphere. The flashes give way to fire. The planet rumbles. Then, nothing.
Humanity later returns home with more of this ore than it could ever possibly need. Humanity's grip on the cosmos is now in an unquestioned iron grip.

It is easier than having to solve the consequences of an orbital attack. Humans can create bodies from other species this would not be complicated. They live together without technology, it would be a matter of time. Then Humankind could decide to save some and educate them in the human way of life, or make them cease to be, much more possibilities, and in all of them Humans gain, quickly and definitively. Without destroying the rest of the environment, and leaving the thing that thinks it is a God ... intact for study and subsequent "dispensation" appropriately.

It's interesting that Eywa seems to have a *strong presence* at _concentrated Unobtainium deposits,_ like there's some connection?
If you're a planet wide intelligence, a _room temperature superconductor_ might be a necessary and vital part of your biology, in which case mining might be an issue, no matter where.
It could also be that Eywa can control all life, but usually just lets it run on automatic. Jake Sully's Avatar was going to be arrowed till Eywa intervened with a sign, Eywa may have been curious about a Avatar that behaved so differently to the trained scientist that usually drove them.
And then Sully only really threw in with the Na'vi *_after he linked_* with the planets net, he could have been compromised mentally and had his whole perspective changed without realising.
After that he was an unwitting servant of a planet wide intelligence that had worked out just how big a threat humanity was to a ecosystem and it's vital minerals that Eywa needed.
Till then it hadn't actually allowed a human Avatar to J̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶i̶n̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶y̶b̶e̶r̶s̶p̶a̶c̶e̶ link into the planetary consciousness, so at that point it learnt the full situation and capabilities from a human soldiers perspective.
With the added technical information gained from fully uploading Grace into it's mind, it then knew what it had to do.
    And made it's plans.
It did seem lucky that Jake managed to capture and bond with the _"dragon"… …_
And now it has Sully fully integrated with his compete transfer to his Avatar body.
It now knows everything that a experienced soldier and a prominent biologist and skilled research scientist knows.
It may _decide_ to begin evolving.

6)"Accidentally" discovery some precious minerals on the lands now clear of local life and rightfully claim the right to mine them(maybe even use the surviving Navis as cheap labors and guides so they can help "rebuild" their home)

A better plan using the same assets (no dropping stuff from space) would be to come in from *high altitude* above the breathing range of Banshees, directly above the _Well of Souls._
The Valkyrie was a shuttle, there was no altitude limit, it could have stayed in the stratosphere and the forces could have just dropped to the maximum height from where they could accurately hit the target. And being capable of hovering would have allowed a stable platform for the bombing, increasing the range of accurate deployment.
The prop craft stay as high as they can if it's less than the Valkyrie's deployment altitude and just stay out of the bomb trajectory, or if they can fly above banshee height as a flanking escort just in case.
Colonel Quaritch didn't just underestimate the Na"vi, he forgot that a experienced Marine who had spent enough time with him to guess his battleplan was leading the opposition.
That's when you consider that you may be facing subterfuge and adapt accordingly.

Problem with the idea of the altitude. It's a simple solution but comes with its own set of problems. The higher the altitude, the lower the margin of error. And don't forget the electronics are being scrambled by the mineral deposits. It's not a smart weapon (the daisycutters), and thus when dropped by pretty much line of sight since the electronic targetting systems are scrambled it is subject to the forces in play and can drift off target or not be on target in the first place. Thus to try to be sure, a bombing at high altitude would require saturation bombing, and even that is no guarantee. It's simple bombing mechanics.

Granted the humans plowed a sacred site, but from the reactions of everyone involved it seems that was an accident, granted it could have been an intentionally provocation, but Quaritch at least didn't seem to act like it was.
As for that site specifically, location is important, the mineral isn't everywhere, nor is it in the concentration to justify building a mine, that site probably was close enough to make transportation viable at the current colony size, and big enough to make it withwhile to build.

Hell, you'd think they'd want to have multiple minds running eventually, and I don't see why they wouldn't eventually build at least a couple more, so leaving that one spot relatively intact wouldn't be some event that would cause a failure in their overall goal.
But yes, it was a vital resource area, you're right, but I'm just saying, makes you wonder how much of this either could've been avoided, or would've happened anyways. Just feel that tactically wise... yeah, certainly could've been done better, whether militarily or diplomatically

The soul tree didn’t appear to be protected by any of the floating mountains directly above it, so the valkyrie transport could have easily deployed its make-shift daisy cutters utilizing the aforementioned satellite data at several thousand feet higher in altitude where it would have been far more difficult for the banshees to ambush and sustain an attack on the aircraft.

What about the flaws in the naavi tactics? You mentioned that they could have hidden in the trees, but they didn't do that. Instead of ambushes and guerilla attacks they made a frontal cavalry charge. Not that cavalry can't be useful, but a cavalry charge should only be used to rout and mop up an already broken or at least weakened enemy force. Alternatively mounts can be used to rapidly redeploy forces to other areas of the battle, which is great for guerilla attacks. I can't see much they could've done to improve their tactics in the air though, they were just at a huge disadvantage there.

    Here's my scenario:
The orbital shuttles left at Alpha Centauri are used as unmanned drones to scoop hydrogen from Polyphemus, a small part of it is turned into antimatter in an orbiting facility to fuel the Venture Star-class spacecraft for their journey Back to Earth (all these are official lore facts).
Step a: Put a few micrograms of antimatter in a suspension container to be placed in a larger tank full of hydrogen, do it with several tanks
Step b: drop these containers from orbit and set the magnetic field that is holding the antimatter suspended to turn off at a certain altitude, the annihilating antimatter will ignite a nuclear fusion of the hydrogen creating a huge H-bomb (these are real facts, look for Antimatter-catalyzed fusion devices
Step c: glass the entire planet
Step d: congratulation, you can now mine all you want and even terraform the planet in an Earth-like way.
Alternatively push an asteroid into a collision course and then blame a natural disaster.

      @discipleaj Рік тому

@Jacob Johnson that's an apple's and oranges comparison though, because .308 and slug rounds are shaped differently as they're designed for different jobs.
The arrows have a smaller surface area at the tip, they're just massive spikes or like Roman javelins which are being thrown by a species who's biomechanics are greater than humans. They could build bows with much heavier draw weights on the bow that a human being couldn't hope to bend much, or at all for that matter. This should easily put the draw weight well over 150lbs and flight of their arrows at over 300-400fps.
To help put this into perspective, they could fire their arrows with similar effect to Greco-Roman and Medieval armies ballista's.
We also do not know what kind of metals they worked with and how good at retaining an edge (i.e. so that it didn't fracture upon impact).
Lots of factors overall. Doesn't matter what level of body armour you have - you don't want to get hit by one of those arrows. The flaw in the movie is that human armour should have been advanced enough by 2154, to stop heavy impacts and dissipate the transfer of energy (maybe some kind of ballistic gel that hardens on impact - which we have today, so imagine how good it could be by then).
Anyway, they had to dumb down the human milita forces for the plot to work. I like many others in this comments section had poked about every hole in the plot possible lol.

You are talking about a few million natives on a planet roughly the size of Mars or even the Earth...there would be plenty of places with no natives at all that you could set down your mining facilities near to exploit the resources needed. ass cheeks you make a very good point, however this is a future were apparently mega-corporations such as the RDF can obtain military grade weaponry for their security forces; addressing your concerns about the super computer trees, these abilities can only be accessed by the Navi from their hair-penises therefore being of no use to humanity's needs other than a potential threat for RDA forces since the soul-trees can be used as a planetary communications device making them a highly dangerous and strategic item that could turn the tide of a Navi/Human war. And it wouldn't be out of a super-corporations power to purchase a nuclear bomb.

Robots Everywhere uh...colonial times in the 1600s don’t have flying space ships and clones, hell if this was realistic the Navi should have seen the humans as gods having technology that seem like they came from religions and fairytales.... but nah, SKY PEOPLE, makes no sense....

ass cheeks another good point, however my theory as to why the Navi didn't simply worship the humans is mist likely due to their "computer trees" since it has been somewhat established that these trees are sentient they could be in fact manipulating the navi to be incredibly hostile to anyone who isn't from the planet. To sum it up, the computer trees spew anti-human/Xeno propaganda, and since the navi are highly primitive and were easily amazed by a all powerful organism that could control wildlife through possible parasitic seed spores they completely believed it. However this is only a theory I could be wrong.

I really didn't get why the humans sent the Valkryie in the first wave. I would have assumed the RDA would clear out the area with smaller gunships and then bring the Valkryie in at the end to drop the bombs. Also, it's worth noting the Valkryie was destroyed not by Navi weapons but by a grenade that Jake Sully threw into one of the engines, causing it to swerve and hit terrain.

Simple: the Valkyrie forced the Na'Vi to give RDA a stand-up battle. If it wasn't comitted, they could've just hit and run the RDA force repeatedly and refused to stand and fight.
With the Valkyrie coming for their sacred site, they had to commit everything they had, right then and there, face superior RDA firepower and die. Qurritch didn't really give a shit about the tree, he wanted to kill all the warriors because he knew that RDA couldn't win a protracted guerilla war.

Here on earth right now we have whats called AHEAD ammunition. It is anti air ammunition that explodes mid air, sending shrapnel all over the place. It’s practically made for this situation. Humanity knew (or should have known) to at least some extent that the locals had dragons that they could have used against them and made the ammunition in advance. The navi would have been eradicated in the same time span as a fraction of the movie. Plot armor can be a real bitch.

@@Jose.AFT.Saddulnot if used properly, a small escort that stays close to the bomber would be best with maybe more reinforcements way up high where the ammunition can’t cause collateral damage. The battle would have been a speed bump if there wasn’t any plot armor.

The Navi had no high-altitude "aircraft" and the tree was a stationary target. There was no reason for a mass air assault at all, let alone a ground assault along with it. Just take the Valkyrie - which is a spacecraft - and fly it well above the floating rocks, higher than the Navi mounts are able to fly, and drop the payload from there. There'd be nothing they could do to stop it.

I was initially thinking a strike fighter squadron of something even as ancient as the P-47s would have done that place over, but they might not have been able to run due to the lesser oxygen amounts... i would imagine the stuff they use there in the movie was specialized for the low O2 environment. But in theory, the Thunderbolt could carry enough rockets and bombs at high speeds and high enough altitudes to negate the banshees. If not, then something like a 3rd gen or up fighter. Assuming it could run.

pretty much... except Custer was given heads up intel on the Sioux and their allies (numbers and positions) and the jackass ignored everything. Split the Seventh Cavalry into three units and left his artillery behind.
If your scouts tell you the enemy base is five miles long (and that's just in tents). You really, really should take that intelligence seriously.
Custer was a self-righteous, arrogant bastard who was demoted from general to colonel for disobeying orders. His vainglory recklessness got the entire Seventh Cavalry killed save for one horse that returned to base with an arrow in its butt (there's a photograph of the poor animal). And add insult to injury, the son of a bitch was ordered not to leave the fort and he went and did it anyway.
      Boy General indeed.
But yeah, Avatar is pretty much "Dances with Wolves" in space.

The only problem with avatar is assuming a race of aliens who know of a technologically advanced species is invading them amd not trying to build actual weapons to defend themselves. They already have some of the aliens engineers so using them to make better weapons so they have the upper hand in negotiations should've been the Navi's primary goal after the humans left.
