Just can't understand half of the lyrics on their fast songs. Until I saw a song book of CCR I had no idea what he was saying in half his songs. Yet I still loved everything they did.

@@daylenjohnson8123 I knew "Bad Moon Rising" wasn't a Vietnam protest song, but that "Fortunate Son" was about the wealthy kids not having to go. "Another" Vietnam protest song, I meant there were other groups who did them as well.

@@The_Vanilla_Guerilla Yes, when John released the album Centerfield, the music publishing company that owned the rights to CCR's songs decided that "The Old Man Down The Road" sounded too much like "Run Through The Jungle" and sued him for it. Basically, the judge said no one could own Fogerty's style but himself so the company lost the case. On another note, Neil Young was sued for NOT sounding like himself.

Late comment on this reaction, but here it goes. I get the reference to the bombs. During the Viet Nam war, the B52 Bombers used to drop long streams of bombs. I've seen the news footage and it looked like the bombs were raining on the Viet Cong on a sunny day. India, sometimes you just have to listen and enjoy the music without analyzing it too much. Great song...Love CCR.

John Fogerty told Rolling Stone Magazine in 1993:
That song is really about the impending breakup of Creedence. The imagery is, you can have a bright, beautiful, sunny day and it can be raining at the same time. The band was breaking up. I was reacting: ‘Geez, this is all getting serious right at the time when we should be having a sunny day.’

i'm not sure, i could be wrong, however, i always thought of `the rain coming down on a sunny day' as a metaphor as being agent orange that was sprayed on rice paddies over in vietnam. when my cousin was in the army and was sent over there, the agent orange got all over his back, the back of his legs and the bottoms of his feet.

      @@sr71ablackbird
      Could be ... I wouldn’t say “ no “ .
My Stepdad is the same way ... and ate up with the cancer now .
He’s got months at most .
Jarheads in Nam were soaked in the stuff .
In my time in the military I became a connoisseur of rain .
Noting the subtle variations in each .
Rain defines a soldiers existence ....
Like wind , mud , sand ... heat and cold .
The level of misery you get to live in .
      Lucky you .
I have seen it rain on a sunny day ... an odd weather phenomenon that was considered with some superstition in more primitive times .
      A sign , a portent ... an omen ... big magic .
That may have been what the were talking about .
CCR liked to make mystical references in their songs .
It was a mystical time ... free love and flower power was going to save us all ...
      Peace , brother ...
Magic was in the air .
      “ Who’ll Stop The Rain ? “
Is another of my favorites by them .
We just thought it was kind of funny .
Like so many odd things we have seen .
Thunder snow ... dust devils on a still day ... that snap when all the water in the air suddenly freezes , and falls like tiny diamonds of ice around you in the mountain air .
The way a fog can rise ... like little wisps from the ground ... to dance around you in the quiet ... seemingly alive .
It can roll over you like a wave , to make a ceiling just above your head , or mist suddenly cover you from nowhere , turning the world into a game of “ blind man’s bluff “.
The early mornings in some deserts , where the mirages look like a huge ocean in front of you , with the barren mountains sticking up in the far distance might be islands ... and as the sun rises and the heat builds , the lakes evaporate before your eyes into scrub , sand and rock ... empty waste ...
A magic trick the desert plays ...
The way sound plays with your mind in the jungle ... deep in the stinking , wet , muddy , sweltering heat and darkness ...
Where there is no air to breathe . Something out there ... just out of sight ... watching ... waiting .
CCR knew about these things and wrote them in their songs .
Through it all , grunts bear witness ... humping the gear and weapons ... shivering in the cold ... broiling in the heat ... one foot in front of the other .
Keep walking ... march or die , as the old saying goes ....
CCR used to write songs for us ... like the Eagles , the Stones ...the Doors ... Hendricks ...
Now we are the only ones that remember them ... like we remember the sights we have seen ...
The world has moved on .

The song is about the band breaking up. They were starting to get unhappy and the lead singer John Fogerty who still tours to this day wanted them to stop while they were on top so they would never hit rock bottom. This was their last song and album. And the meaning behind the song also means that bad things are happening on what was supposed to be a good day. Hence the line have u ever seen the rain coming down on a sunny day. Its saying sad things and bad things are happening on what was supposed to be a great happy sunny day. Its really sad

I have been lucky enough to see rain on a sunny day twice in my life. It is a rare thing. I was driving along a highway under clear sky and bright sunshine. Off on my right side I could see a long, deep purple cloud pouring rain down, with lightning flashing. I can still see it in my mind. And just recently, I saw sunshine from my kitchen on the south side of the house. I went into the bathroom on the north side and saw snow and gray clouds. Back to the kitchen, still see sunshine. I looked up and saw clouds with openings through which sunshine was pouring! I never thought of this song as being about bombs falling, that could be right, I just thought it was about seeing something very unusual. I'll have to give another listen now.

But like most good songs it is done in a way that can be applied to many situations and inspire people different ways. It could easily be viewed as bad things happening on a gold day. Play some Barry White, he's a great singer, and his music was a huge part of my young life. I started listening to Motown music when I was about 8 years old, I love all Motown, I'm 59 years old now, and I still go back, and remember that these were my imformiable years, and because of my extreme love of music, this music era is what shaped me as a music lover, but also shaped me into the person I am today!! No I'm not Black, I'm a middle aged White woman that honestly & extremely loves Soul, Rock & Roll, Blues, Jazz and R&B lol...Love your reactions, keep up the great music you play for all of us 🙂...

@@grakkerful Sir. This is my interpretation of the lyrics. John Fogerty may have a different view, since he wrote it. The best to you and your Family.

Jimmy Buffett, "He went to Paris". Tim Minchin, "Prejudice" or "Lullaby". Shane Koyczan, "To this day". The last one is not a song but a spoken word poem. I am new to your universe. I love hearing your take on so many of the songs I grew up with. Will you share what songs are special to you?

Credence had so many hits that still get a lot of play but some of their lesser known songs were classics as well. Try (Wish I Could) Hideaway, Wrote a Song for Everyone, and Effigy. Fogerty's depth as a songerwriter, singer, and musician shine through on these.

Jon Fogerty himself has said in interviews and prior to playing the song in concert that the song is about rising tension within CCR and the imminent departure of his brother Tom from the band. The band was at it's height and was starting to fall apart. So it was sunny as could be but it was raining.

  • @jennifershelley6938

The band were having a lot of internal tension, especially lead singer John and his older brother Tom. John wrote this song in 1971.
When Tom left the band in 1972, the pair remained estranged for the next 18 years. They only saw each other a handful of times before Tom died in 1990.
John wrote the song about "the rain" (tensions in the band) "coming down on a sunny day" (the band at the height of their bands' career).

This song is John Fogerty's take on the imminent departure of his brother Tom from the band, and the overall tension in the group at a time when they should have been enjoying their success. The line, "I want to know - have you ever seen the rain comin' down on a sunny day?" refers to Tom leaving while CCR was at its commercial zenith. The flip side of this single, "Hey Tonight," is John reassuring the band that all would go well despite the adversity.
Tom Fogerty left the group in early 1971, after this album was released. He released three solo albums before dying of tuberculosis in 1990. A fourth album, completed in 1988, was released posthumously.

John Fogerty wrote all their hits and the rest of the band resented him for it. That's the tension part.

Spot on. His brother wanted to get some songs on the albums but he was way to 1960's pop. Tom was the original lead singer of their various other names but when John started writing and singing ( as well as teaching Tom to play guitar and Stu the bass) the band took off. Tom resented that bigtime.

I remember seeing the rain on a sunny day, a long time ago, in my home town, when I was a kid. I looked kinda weird! Not sure how that happened though, I think it was a rain cloud, and somehow the breeze was blowing the rain in that direction.

I read somewhere a long time ago that John wrote this song when the band members where not getting along so well and he was predicting the breakup of the band. Everything looked good career wise, but he foresaw the the end, I think it was not too long after that the band did break up. I could be wrong, but I did hear this somewhere.
