Hi guys., I think that the AU1's had a higher ride height in the rear suspension, and when the AU2 makeover was done the subtle changes included lowering the front & rear ride height, along with adding plastic sill rail extensions. As my other mate from the Jaguar club Bruce has owned a AU1 Fairmont from new and it has that higher ride height front & back Plus going one step further, Annette's daughter & son in law had a AU1 with rear IRS no mods pure factory, when they updated to a AU3 , pure factory no mods, it scraped the underside of the car when the crazy steep drive finished and you arrived at the carport at the top, the car WOULD NOT make it onto the flat slab /carport, they tried backing it up as well as driving it up forwards, made no difference, either way the car scraped its belly and would have been totally jammed on the cement if you had tried to force it any further. When I was looking for an AU wagon for the shop in the country, near all the AU2's & AU3's I looked at had front tyres that had scraped the flange on the front mudguards due to lower ride height. the 2002 AU3 that I finally purchased was an ex-patient transfer car from a Victorian health dept' it had a higher front & rear ride height the front tyre well cleared the front mudguard like Bruces' standard AU1 does. My AU3 was a special build with a high backed bench front seat with a wide pull-out arm rest, and NO central console with a column automatic gear lever like a 1960's or '70's car and extra wide heavy duty wheel rims with hub caps, that car was excellent and when sold by Vic' Health Dept in 2008 , it had only 8,000klms on it in 6 years, like new. It also had a different looking dash that finished higher up as no console in ultra pale grey same color as the heavy duty cloth seats in it, these AU's were excellent cars, well made, with engines that give unbelievable mileages, to me both these AU wagons, and the prior series starting 1988 EA wagons have an almost French design look with their tall glass that is also very curved, as for the AU headlights they look almost like a pure French design that would be on a Citroen, Peugeot or Renault, very unusual.
I felt that the AU series be it a Falcon, or even a bigger Fairlane was Ford Aust's high point in design, as the bland BA/BF series that followed was "pure white good styling" I.E, no styling at all, then to add to the blandness the Fairlane & LTD's used the Falcon sedan little small taillights on the more expensive car of which needed something to break up the bland plainness that it had. I could not believe that when the FG series was released that there were no long wheelbase versions, wagon nor Fairlane.

That gold colour is called Amaretto I’ve actually got a Au series 1.5 Fairmont Ghia in Amaretto with 284000km i saved it from a paddock where it had been sitting for over 8 years and was going to be sent to the wrecking yard. Although it has quite a lot of clear coat peel the interior and engine seem as good as the day they came off the production line. Had it since July 2021

Wonderful to see. I bought my series 3 liquid silver full leather, low kms Fairmont Ghia a year ago to book-end my EH Holdem Prem. Both iconc cars and love them both. Finally fitted adjustable camber bolts and now with a perfect alighnment on all 4 double wishbones, it now handles and rides very much like an XF Jag. I don't believe there is any other Aussie car that can ride and handle this well. Always enjoy your vids Mark. Cheers Jeff

In the bicycle fraternity it is described as a formula, H+1, H being the number of bicycles you own at that moment. In the guitar player orbit it is called GAS, Guitar Acquisition Syndrome.

Nice way of saying Australians have bland taste in cars.
Just look at the Commodore VT now. It was already a dated design when it came out with it's rounded contours. That came in vogue during the early to mid 1990s. Ford blended sharp edges into the body which was a foreshadowing of future cars.
