Now Alex….can we chat?!! The skirt you made is beautiful, fits you beautifully and fits the fabric. You are being very critical of yourself. It is not costumey- it’s lovely! Please wear it and enjoy. For the next version, take the pattern and draft the side seams out more for a fuller version

Seeing your pattern on you, I can imagine it as a shorter skirt (have to experiment with the hem for best look) , and then you see all of your boots and some tights, which gives an edge to a classic shaped skirt. You did a beautiful job so I hope you can find a way to love it :) I do get that you are frustrated to have a result that is not what you imagined in your head. Make your original idea for your dream skirt, and revisit this one after some distance.

I love Sarah’s Hanbok skirt. It’s wonderful to see her first pattern release has such a strong connection to her heritage and culture.

Alex, far be it from us to contradict you but i think that skirt looks gorgeous on you. I think you need to style it with a cropped sweater or long sleeve top. For me it really hits the edgy, casual brief. I reckon once you’ve styled it a couple of ways you’ll be surprised how much you reach for it. Change the d rings to a buckle if they really bug you. The skirt’s a winner!
I tried it on with the recent cropped black sweater, but it look too funereal😂. Ideally I’d have a top in the same rust colour as the stripes, I’m loathe to make one if I’m not going to wear the skirt ❤️❤️

It’s all so much in the eye of the beholder! In any case, if your heart doesn’t lie to it, at least you’ve made something beautiful to donate! Some stylish lady will thrift that and think they’ve died and gone to heaven.
I adore Sarah from Sewing Therapy. I have used lots of her sewalongs and have been inspired to buy patterns I would not have considered. I don’t think you would be disappointed with the Hanbock skirt. Sarah stocks amazing fabrics but I am put off by shipping costs from Canada.
I know you don’t feel comfortable in your skirt, But I think it looks fabulous on you, it makes your waist look tiny, I love the length and it looks great with your boots. With the cold weather coming it will keep you warm. 😊

I think that is a useful skirt. It is what I call an “all day” skirt. It has the comfort of pants but you look a little more dressed up simply because it’s a skirt. In my world it would be my go to funeral skirt because I could be comfortable in it all day. I think it would be fun with a motorcycle jacket. Or go Vivienne Westwood with stays. However, I think you can alter that pattern for the fit you like because that skirt is perfect on you.

I wanted a flare skirt quite a few months ago and I didn’t know what pattern to get so I went to a thrift store and found a perfect skirt and the perfect flare so I just copied and made myself my own skirt.

I understand that you are not happy with the skirt, Alex. Seeing it on you, I have to say that I think it is a perfect addition to your wardrobe. It looks great ( I can imagine it being sold in Allsaints). Far better than any of the other patterns you showed at the end. Still, that’s just my opinion, you have to be comfortable wearing it, after all.

While i think the skirt looks lovely on you, if you aren't happy with it, you will never wear it. I love the last skirt, definitely a skirt i would wear. It will be interesting to see what skirt pattern you choose to try next.

Commiserations on your skirt! I think many people have been seduced by that bag, which is now available separately, I believe. There are so many decisions to be made when making a garment so it’s easy to diverge from your original intention - which is why The Curated Wardrobe is so useful. On the other hand, I think you need to leave a little wiggle room for your style to evolve and I think that skirt looks really good on you. I have made the Style Arc Northcote skirt as it fits into my arty/layered/sports luxe (aka secret pyjamas) style. It’s a really quick and easy make. I was disappointed that it was narrower at the hem than I expected but that could be easily adjusted. I also suggest the Spaghetti Western Sewing Henrietta skirt, which has an elastic aged waist and some interesting gathered side panels that give it a sort of a-line shape.
I really like it. I'm sure you could pair it with something. I'm 48 but still love alternative clothing. I love the fabric. It reminds me of all the pinstripe clothing we all used to wear on rock nights.

I love your new skirt ☺ I totally get not feeling 'right' in it. I'm thinking maybe a softer blouse (floral?) or soft fitted sweater pairing might change the look of it. I've made the Merchant and Mills Shepherd skirt a couple of times now, and there is loads of hemline, and deep pleats at a wide-ish waistband. The one that works the best is in a Brussels Washer linen (blend), but would be great in something even lighter, given all the pleats. The button closures at the waist are such a fun detail!! Looking forward to following your coming makes! 😍
The Bernadette skirt may not be what you wanted, but, it looks wonderful on you! As far as a flowey long skirt, I think the one from Sewing Therapy is the one. I enjoy Sara's sewing tutorials too.
Maybe you can add some panels or gores. Lovely fabric. I love the bag!

Oh I love it! And think it looks amazing on you!!! I don't get what you don't like 🤷🏼♀️ you could just change the side seams to make them fuller....and maybe add in a gore each side to the skirt you've already made to save wasting all your hard work and fabric and just change the d rings on the bag to a different type of attachment 😀

I have made the Assembly Line's S401 Three Pleat Skirt before, and it is glorious! It is a knee length skirt, but like you, I want more of a walking skirt, and plan to make another one that is much longer. Perhaps give it a look.
Alex I appreciate your honesty because we all make those kinds of mistakes. Yes it looks beautiful but If you are not happy you will not wear it. It is difficult isn’t it, to ignore pics that we love. I made a dress I thought would be so right bc I loved the pic, but it just didn’t make me happy. I gave it to my daughter. I love the Vogue patterns V7880 skirt. I’m making mine in a linen. I could also see it in a suede. Thank you again for sharing your woos.

Still worth it, though. - I also would have fallen for that gorgeous skirt with the pocket, and it also would have been a mistake.

Am laughing at the idea of Mrs Danvers in DMs! The skirt looks great on you, but totally understand that you have to feel good in it to love it. I wonder if different coloured boots would help to break up the line a bit? If you made a short sweater in a rust or pumpkin colour I think you would wear it anyway even if you ditch the skirt. I have a bad feeling you might have been a “Flake enabler” for me, but I can see it probably isn't for you. I can see you in the Cinnamon Daisy one though. Hi Alex the skirt looks great on you even though it was not what you were looking for. I have made the Stina skirt by Atelier Jupe twice it has inverted pleats and hidden pockets sits quite flat on your waist and hips and has a lining that is a-line with no pleats it is a lovely skirt. I’m getting the curated closet for Christmas, so will have to watch out and not just make what I see and try to follow what I need. Alex, you’re so hard on yourself! I totally get making something that doesn’t fit your personal mandate, but I’m willing to bet that you’ll revisit this beautiful pinstripe skirt in a couple months and be impressed by it. I can see it with a shorter, boxy, earth-tone sweater and brown boots…so many things! But, for your mandate, have you checked out the Carrie Skirt by Vanessa Hansen, the Milton Pinafore designed by Just Patterns for Peppermint Magazine (the bib part is really easy to replace with a regular waistband, or lengthening one of the versions of the Fiore Skirt by Closet Core? Forgive me if these have already been suggested, but they might fit the bill? Looking forward to the dress!
Hi, I love the skirt and the concept of long skirts. My opinion is the problem is the top or in particular the shirt. A shirt style top with a long skirt is always going to look librarian, headmistress, housekeeper, etc. Look back to your photos and consider the tops. Especially if you want edgy, can a shirt look edgy? As always respect your choices and thank you for your channel.

I like it though, and it suits you though I get what you mean by the bag. I’m just going to make the Tessuti Mahlia skirt, which I saw at the Harrogate knitting and stitching show and looked fabulous on the seller! It’s an A line in ponte.

When something like this happens to me, I’m exactly the same as you Alex and get carried away, but I find if I leave it in the wardrobe for a while I do tend to wear and like what I’ve sewn at a later date, love your videos 💕

I love your Bernadette, and the fabric 😍( did you see the stripes in the new see you at six) You could add volume to the pattern til you get your desired amount of swoosh? Did you look at the Assembly line ones ? Personally really hoping you do the Hanbok coz I've been working hard to resist that one 😂😂! I've got the deer and doe Azara which might work for you? Also did you see Stokx patterns they have a couple of skirts that might appeal ? I haven't made their skirts but their Eve dress is excellent!
I would try the skirt with a tight top or a cropped sweater. I believe the contrast between the dressy skirt and a more casual top would look great!
I like this skirt on you however I think if you shorten it by maybe 5cm it would be better . Also I would not wear a shirt on this skirt a short chrop jersey ( if I recall well, you did sew one ) and yr boots 😊

I'm thinking/planning of making a linen 3/4 circle skirt in midi length, this would work quite well for you as well. Although your inspiration pics were more like wool/viscose mix.
Not sure what type of material you want, for the winter and a more a-line fit perhaps a light wool cut on the bias would work - however I'm a sucker for vintage like patterns/materials so f.e a checkered wool would be lovely for this (the Stylearc pattern would be great for this type of skirt).

I made the 1x and I wish I’d thought to size down. I went ahead and adjusted the length to be two inches longer than the mini because I have long legs and a short waist. I agree that the pattern is a good pattern and I also understand the seduction of a pattern!😂

I would 100% try a bias cut A-line skirt next. There are many fun patterns with different details, but to me nothing beats a good bias cut skirt. You can use a pattern or draft it yourself to have more or less flare. Even with a heavier fabric, you'll get a beautiful drape. Maybe use stash fabric, something you are not too crazy about but has similar weight to what you would want your final version to look like, to make a quick mock up and go from there?
I have a vintage bias cut skirt in a pretty heavy wool and the fit, drape, and movement is amazing. Cloning that skirt is next on my list :)
Alex, that skirt is awesome and has so much potential. If you were to wear it at home and do a little tweaking where you want it I’m guessing your thoughts will change. It is new and different so it may take some time to get used to a new to you style. I’ve followed you and admire your careful and precise sewing skill. Be patient and se what happens.
The style arc skirt looks very similar to the skirt portion of the FridaySews dress you recently made. It might be too plain for the skirt of your dreams, but I think it would fit your desired aesthetic. Maybe a bit wider at the bottom.

Like you, I've been looking for a long flared skirt and I just bought the Folkwear Patterns Walking Skirt pattern which might be the type of skirt you are looking for. I'm hoping to make it in a wool mix for winter and possibly a twill for warmer weather. A tartan would be nice but I'm afraid of pattern matching!

I think you are right about the skirt you made. I’ve just started watching the early Downton Abbey series again and it would be just right for the housekeeper. Of all the skirt patterns you reviewed I think the Hanbok is the nearest to the skirt you want. I was thinking that a wide grosgrain ribbon would be lovely as the belt rather than fabric. Also maybe steer away from black fabrics and try forest greens or chestnut for a less heavy look. Your skirt looked beautifully made, as usual.

I was also attracted to the new Elbe Textiles Howerdel asymmetric skirt. My first thought was the same as yours - "no" to the bottom tier. If I make it (and I probably will), I'll make it without the bottom tier and make it longer. I really like the asymmetric feature. I think the Carnaby Street skirt is also very nice. I'd make it out of a fine wale corduroy.

I’ve been eyeing the Barnadette pattern since it’s release (White Stuff did a skirt just like it but out of stock for a try on) I wasn’t sure if it was for me but since watching you I know what to expect from the result. I may still change my mind 😂 who said I’m indecisive?
The Assembly Line Elastic Waist Maxi Skirt. My favorite everyday a line skirt. Watch the length though-it is not as maxi as indicated
The advantage of a full skirt is there is lots of fabric. Once the pinch has passed maybe unpick and remake? You got this Alex, get back on the horse and make a swishy skirt! Love Sara's Hanbock skirt. She also has designed a matching wrap Hanbock jacket. What about a bias cut one?
Mrs Danvers chic, love it 😂 We all get seduced by pattern images, sales and what the cool kids are sewing. I've been on the hunt for the perfect (for me) skirt pattern and finally bought the Antheil (?) pattern from How To Do Fashion as I keep looking at it. Not sewn it yet as knee deep in decorating and DIY at the moment.
I also thought your skirt would look great with a chunky knit and your boots.

While you may be frustrated by the mismatch between your brief and the final make I think it is edgy enough to work with your Doc Martin's and a rust roll neck sweater. The little bag reminds me of a skirt you made a while back from waffle patterns. It is an interesting detail that also adds an edge. I think you could swap out the D rings for a metallic version quick release buckle. The fit is excellent and the skirt would look great with a slightly cropped jacket or cardigan.
Good idea about the belt buckle, I’ll keep a look out for one. I agree about a rust top too. I love that waffle patterns skirt ❤️
We all occasionally get seduced by something we know in our heads is not the right pattern or fabric for our preferences. If you’re willing to go for an elastic waist skirt, my favourite full skirt in midi or maxi length is the Pattern Emporium free spirit skirt. My winter version is a navy cotton tencel blend in a midi style with a slit up to the knee, and pockets. I don’t wear maxi skirts in winter to keep them from dragging in the snow we get in the Canadian winters.

I love your Bernadette and I think it looks great on you, but if you’re not feeling it then you won’t wear it (like the garments you already cleared out! ). The Hanbok skirt looks like it could fit the bill, the waist detail gives an edgy feel and you’ll have fabulous swoosh as it’s a generous wrap.
Change is hard you may have stumbled at the first hurdle but the race isn’t over yet 😉.
i think the pleats and flounces are not for you Alex! Maybe keep it simple, I've made Simlicity's S8885, the pattern styling wouldn't sell it but it turned out well. I'm short so it probably has less flare at the hem on me (which is what I wanted) but I really like the shape.
I also love the Hanbuk skirt and she also has a dress. I bought the dress.
Hi Alex 😊As cool as the pattern of the skirt is (and the fabric might I add), I agree it leans more Edwardian/matronly and less Vivienne Westwoodesque (there was potential with that fabric). Sometimes you never know the real feel of the garment until you try on the final product, unfortunately...One of the few downsides of making your own wearables. Maybe you could revisit it later on and chop some length in hopes that it will change the way you feel when you wear it (?) Anyways, I wanted to say I made the Fibremood Amira skirt, it's a nice shape and cool style, I can see you liking the final skirt, HOWEVER, I made it in a nice quality viscose with a lot of drape to get the same look of their pictures and oh deary me, it was such a pain to get every one of those pleats right, they are the hidden stitch type which does look lovely but probably not intended for flowy fabrics; you also are supposed to pleat all the way to the hem (which is a lot of faff and takes forever in viscose) and first time it goes in the wash that was that. I believe they suggest poplin or shape retaining fabrics in the instructions, so if you go for this pattern, the fabric choice is crucial. I believe the one they used for their samples must be the perfect balance between shape retaining properties and flow, and that’s the only reason it looks like that. I might consider using the same pattern and simply gathering to size instead of pleating when using flowy non bulky fabrics, I'll try that as an option too, because the yoke shaping is really nice. I would also size down if in-between sizes with this one because it does need to just fit around the waist. There is a side invisible zip and overall finishes are nicely done and simple. I wouldn’t make any of the first 5 options you went through though, skip the historical, riding and the circle/ half circles skirts. The Hanbok skirt looks pretty cool, and I admit I’m intrigued by it, but I can't be bothered with wrap skirts for functionality reasons. Carnaby and Howerdel could be nice indeed! Other than that, Fibremood only shows the tech drawing on the PDF buying link, not the one you are supposed to download the instructions, but yeah, you can also just download the instructions before buying and get a good idea of what you are getting into (they also have the tech drawings there). Ooh Alex i too have been seduced by the gorgeous model! ……and it gets worse…..have cut the skirt out in denim too, haven’t sewn it yer as I’m busy making gifts for Christmas…..let’s hope it works for me. Must say l have started to step back from the UA-cam pressure of the latest make, and asking if it will suit my lifestyle and I think Bernadette will work, I quite like a midi length for a denim skirt.

Hi Alex…. I tried to post on your IG page but my dumb phone misspells everything…so let’s see if I can look a little more intelligent here :). I also bought the bernadette skirt…mainly for the belt bag but have not made it yet. Not sure if it’s exactly what you are looking for but I really love the Circee skirt by deer and doe. The pleat on the right side matches perfectly with the wrap edge and is such a classy design. I made it floor length in tencel twill for xmas last year and loved it but I was tripping and stepping on the hem so i shortened it about 6 inches and now its perfect. Sadly it was the skirt I wore to my sons funeral in June so theres a good bit of sadness attached to it now when I wear it but I have plans to make a more colorful one soon (original version is black)
May I suggest a French one, the mint skirt from joli lab, perfect fit I think one of my favorite with the Jaya skirt from pm pattern ❤

HI, I made a StyleArc skirt. It didn't come out "swushee". The difference between the waist and bottom of the skirt is not huge, also it is designed for knit fabrics. I am 6" tall, so I added a 7" to the original length and it is still not swushee.
A shorter skirt would suit you better. In the future you can pivot the bottom of the pattern while the top is at the fold. You can go from 1-5 inches.
I think the skirt is beautiful on you. Perhaps there is too much contrast between the top and bottom and maybe a slightly less chunky boot would work better with the length. You mentioned flowy as a priority, yet several of the skirts you showed are structured. Perhaps for the next one use silk or rayon? I enjoy your channel.
I think the skirt you made would work well if it was a bit shorter, using the same length proportions as the pattern images. The fit is great and the little bag is nice touch. Looking at the inspiration board, those all seem like circle skirts at the length you want. I don't think you even need a pattern for them, there are lots of tutorials on UA-cam figuring them out (@MariahPattie does amazing tutorial). Full circle, half circle etc. I read once that skirts are "defined" and "classified" in the fashion industry by the bottom hem circumference i.e. a 40 inch, or 80" or 120" hem. Keep going you are really on a great path with all this, love following along.
I agree it work better shorter, but I really want long 😁. I’ve tried to get the length I’d like with a circle skirt, but I can’t make it work unfortunately. I love that bit of inside knowledge 😁❤️
Try a short watch of the tutorial before you give up on circle skirts, she explains how the different variations fit, which I found very helpful. They can be any circumference at the waist (with gathers or pleats) or any circumference at hem (1/2, 3/4, full circle for example). You might have to seam them (gores) to fit on your fabric.
Could you put a couple of panels in the side seams to make it wider at the hem? I have also been seduced and was so tempted to make this too but haven’t so far.
Look at it another way, you’ve learnt the hard lesson first…..onwards and upwards 😊
I really like the long a-line skirt aesthetic too, although I think it would take me a little while to get used to wearing a new look and not feel like someone from a bygone era. Choice of boots is key I guess. I like the skirt on you and am looking forward to seeing what you decide to make for version 2. Are there any in the shops you can try on? We've all been in your shoes! We have a vision, or we get seduced by a photo of a similar garment. It makes us blind to how the pattern differs.
Long skirts without hem volume can feel suffocating. Didn't the 1910s and 1950s feature a similar fit called hobble skirts? Even with a slippery lining they restrict normal movement.
My first instinct would be to salvage the skirt because the waist fits well and the fabric's nice. Could it be hemmed up as a short skirt and worn with opaque tights and boots? I might make the remnant into a chic vest.
Of all the patterns you shared I vastly prefer the ones that create a higher waistline. A fitted midsection above and below the natural waist is a great idea. But I don't love skirts where the yoke extends only downward, not up, like Amira. It visually hangs from the high hip, weighing down the center of gravity and shortening the leg line (unless there's a voluminous bodice or sleeve as counterweight above). IMHO.
The Hanbok design makes the case for a wide, high waistband or corset style of mid section. The long green skirt with the tied belt in back is 90% good but needs a revamp on the back to eliminate the knot. Maybe it could be modified into an elasticated back?
Have you looked through your burda and other sewing magazines and pattern stash? Even if it is a dress you could put a waistband on the skirt of? I was wondering if you made a half circle skirt with pockets out of a tencel or viscose and see how it works in your wardrobe. xxx

Hi Alex. What a shame you are disappointed in your skirt. As usual you have sewn it beautifully but failed to give you the look you were after. I’m sure you’ll find a way to wear it. However I bought the Tessuti Mahlia skirt pattern from the Harrogate Knitting and stitching show. I loved the look of it on the lady selling Tessuti patterns, of course. Don’t know if you have seen this pattern. Love following your experiments. X
I think what you are seeking is a bias-cut skirt. You cut it a little wide, then the bias moulds over you hips and flares out below, and you get a wonderful drape. Sorry I don’t have time to look for patterns for you.

What about the Gracie Steel Flirt Skirt? It has a yoke at the waist and then you can choose to either add a gathered, pleated or A-line skirt
