He starts off creating this circus of "freaks", who he actually treats very well and has friendships with. But then he decides to bring the amazing singer Jenny Lind to the US, and gains fame managing her. He totally neglects all the "different people" in the circus. When he is back in town, there is a big gala to fete him and Jenny Lind. All the "freaks" he has befriended assume they will all be included, but he telks them to stay away and stay hidden. This is where the song "This is Me" comes in. They refuse to be shamed and hidden, and crash the gala all together singing this song proudly. It is the climax of the show, as they all dance together and sing. As it's a musical. So that is the background of this song. And Zhou Shen very much identifies with it, as you say.
