Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM vs 24mm f/2.8 G - What's the difference? I was asked this week so I investigated. The results are pretty impressive. Sony have released the best ultra-compact prime lenses for E-mount, except for 1 issue. Is it a deal breaker? You decide!

I've pre-ordered the 24mm and the 40mm - half the price and half the size vs the GM, and more than enough for most people. I'd like to see them do something similar in an 85 and 105. As you mention here, I wouldn't use them for landscape, architecture, or wildlife as there are better options, but they are almost ideal for the use cases you mentioned - street, travel, and carrying around. They'll be great companions for my A7c, which seems to be where Sony is aiming them.

I never doubted how good the 2.8 24mm was but for someone who does astro often, the 1.4 was the best option for me. I absolutely love the 24mm GM, such a good lens.

I've actually been going back and forth between the 24mm f/2.8 G and the 20mm f/1.8 G. The 20mm G has a wider max aperture with 9 aperture blades. But it's still within reach compared to the 24mm GM. I like the size and weight of the 24mm f/2.8 G though. The 20mm G seems to land between the 24 G and GM for weight, max aperture and price while being in a similar ballpark for FOV.

It's been 2 years since I got my hands on the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G Lens and with my limited budget at that time, I could only afford the G over the G Master - it still wasn't a huge deal breaker. For videos, its been amazing. For photos, it still is pretty nice and I do agree with the flaws as I have experienced it too - but it's definitely one lens I enjoyed using. Took a while for me to get the hang of a lens thats wide haha - but after some trials and errors, I definitely got some nice shots for clients that made them super impressed with it.

I think lens comparisons are tremendously resourceful with reviews. Yes you can review lens quality by its own merits, but by giving context on what else is out there you can show if that lens's qualities warrant a purchase over another one, especially when there is a price discrepancy. Also really enjoyed your fuji 16mm 1.4 vs 2.8 video and your other video on the fuji 16mm 1.4 and Sony 24mm 1.4!

I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, but I also want a more compact 24mm for hiking, the resolution of the lens needs to be optimized for at least my Sony A7RIV, but I do not like the new Sony 24mm 2,8 G lens, shure it is compact, it have aperture ring, AF/MF button, but too much distortion and vignetting, I do not want a lens that are dependant of software, make it good as an analog performer Sony ! Shooting Canon, I have the Tarmon 24-70 and 70-200mm f2.8s. I picked up a really nice deal on a Sony A7R II with a Sigma 55mm f1.4 ART lens. A really nice deal. (I also have Sony APS-C bodies w/primes) I can run the Tamrons on all the Sonys just fine with the Sigma MC-11 adapter. So I have wide-angle covered at 2.8, but I'd kind of like to go smaller and lighter for that on the A7RII. The 24mm G sounds like it might give great results on the A7RII and be relatively portable. Then I can sell some other stuff and get a good long telephoto to take things past the 200mm.

Naturally when you pay big money you get better results. But there is an over obsession about sharpness corner-to-corner that never existed in the film days. Most average modern lenses out pace any lens in the film days of sharpness. I have noticed that most clients can never tell you how sharp the lens is corner-to-corner. I plan to use the 24mm compact on an APS-C sensor for walk around purposes.

It reminds me 28mm f2 in a better, more petite body. I found distortion as a highly problematic aspect. There is something different in a rectangular projection of the 3D space than warping a 2D image. Personally, I'm more into 40mm option.

Thanks Ted for the analysis of the new Sony 24mm f2.8 G lens offerings on the cards and you made every aspect of buying it very clear to every one, form serious to casual photographers in mind, but there are photographers who are serious but cannot afford to buy G Master lenses and the likes made by other companies have everything to do with the cheaper versions but capable lenses have to offer to them and make use of them to the fullest!, whether post production or before!! Having said that , I do have a question which intruges me for long that why expensive lenses are expensive only because, is it only because the cost of production or the technology that made the equipment more expensive, I'm saying "more" not because of the bulk of material, better material, I mean, but because of astrnomically higher price point of of the expensive lenses!! The corrected versions of the expensive lenses remain expensive at any point of time you proceeded to buy them but once the technology is scattered to companies,. even to the little known ones, the prices do never plummet for those lenses, why?!!

It's sometimes funny to note that when mirrorless cameras with short flange distance was introduced, there was a huge expectation and explanation how the short flange distance would enable design lenses that are smaller and faster and optically better. What we now see, across manufacturers are huge lenses with several glass elements (we justify that more elements makes better image) and often moderate to slightly better image. People of particular region in the world always count and conclude the more numerical number is better.
Such people are not photographers but promoters. Sad.

True, any lens can be used to create art but it’s a review for a consumer product. You might as well be watching videos of people making great pictures with smartphone cameras then cause there’s some good stuff there too
People also use lenses for technical/architectural photography and this deep understanding of the distortion that comes from each lens is very helpful for them.

I was so engaged to this channel and so thrilled to see new video updates when you talked about the actual *art* of photography (book pickups, the artist series, photo assignments, all that stuff). @@cameraprepper7938 so what? Aren't there thousands of youtubers doing exactly the same? What's the point in just following the trend? I felt this channel lost part of it's identity and is no longer as interesting to me. That is not to say that Ted's work isn't good, all videos are neat and well presented and I do value all the effort he puts in them. Although, honestly, I also have the impression that this type of content is much easier to produce. I just find it horribly boring to watch the same gear reviews everywhere... Especially here, a channel that got me hooked for sooo many other high quality videos that had nothing to do with gear.

@@DavidVideoFILMS that doesn’t make it trash…it makes you a bit foolish for buying a lens with 2-stops less light as you could’ve simply shot at f/2.8 with one of you existing lenses before buying.
