How good are the 24mm lens for landscape photography for high resolution cameras when you want to print very large pro quality prints ? I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, but I also want a more compact and lightweight 24mm lens.
The 700€ price is reasonable as long as these lenses have very good optical quality and great autofocus performance. The introductory price of the small full frame Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 T* ZA Sonnar in 2013 was similar. These three lenses suit perfectly with the small Sony a7C. Especially the 24mm f/2.8 which has a very convenient angle of view for travel photography, without serious perspective distortion. Ideal for landscape or even full body portrait photography. The full frame e-mount 50mm focal length is very popular by photographers and Sony now covers every possible need of a full frame 50mm e-mount lenses. _The very expensive 50mm f/1.2 G for extremely shallow depth of field. _The less expensive Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 for very shallow depth of field. _The extremely sharp Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 which isn't very expensive and I believe belongs to the 50mm full frame family. _The very affordable 50mm f/1.8 _The macro 50mm f/2.8 which is very sharp too. _The recent very small, close to the pancake size 50mm f/2.8. Sony has such an impressive variety of 50mm full frame lenses designed for its mirrorless cameras. Canon and Nikon will need at least five years to offer a similar variety of full frame 50mm lenses designed to their mirrorless cameras. However I have to admit that the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct which I believe belongs to the full frame 50mm family of lenses, is a very impressive unparalleled achievement.
I bought the 24mm, 40mm and the 50mm compact lenses and love them. Center focusing is great . I do not need the F/1.4 or F/1.2 apertures because I have the Nikons for that. But for street photography and the portability plus less weight I am very satisfied with these type of lenses. I use the 40mm F/2.5 on the Sony A7c in my Office Studio. But I am leaning more the the Nifty Fifty FE 50mm F/1.8 STM over the F/2.5 compact version. But still I am happy with the collection.
I have two questions gordon, first one is about the Sigma lens in 12:49 Why did the Sigma focusing take such large steps? Was it due to user error, or is this indeed how the sigma focusing behaves when you manually focus slowly? Second question is for the Sony lens' aperture ring. When you set it to clickless and turn the ring slowly, does the Aperture change by smaller steps than 1/3rd?

This 24 seems to be a more compelling lens than the 40 or 50. I don't mind f2.8 on a 24, but 2.5 on the 40/50 for $600 is way too slow. The gains in the compact size and build quality for $600 is not enough to offset the f2.8 when compared to Sony's own 35/1.8 and 50/1.8 lenses. These lenses are very nice looking though. Love those aperture rings.

I mostly only shoot JPEG out of camera - all the images I show in my reviews are JPEGs unless I state otherwise! So I have no RAW tips other than to try and get it right in-camera! - I honestly rarely if ever need the adjustments of RAW for what I'm after.
Hi Gordon, thanks for this excellent review. I love this focal length and have the GM and sigma 3.5 (for travel) on the R4 body. I was considering changing the sigma for the new sony. However it definately seems the sigma can hold its own, plus the all metal construction is great. Thanks for helping me rethink 😄🤔

Between my 16-35, 24-105, and 24-240, I think I have 24mm pretty much covered. The main advantage would be the size especially when combined with my a7C vs my a7rIV for street photography.
Thanks for the video and details. I think Son y really missed a great trick here - they should have just gone and created all these lenses at f/2 or f/1.8 and be done with it. But there we are.
Dear Gordon. Thanks for the review. I am looking for compact wide-ish lens(28 to 35mm) for my A6400. Would this lens be sharper than the Sigma 19 f2.8 on the A6400? The Sigma 16 is huge and I ended up selling it. Right now I am using the 30mm f2.8. When used as a manual focus lens, the DOF isn't great at F8. I need something with a deeper DOF at f5.6 or F8. Hence the question. Thanks. Would appreciate your input. I have also got the Sigma 30 and 56 f1.4.

Yes, I think it'd be a nice option. There are other 24s, some designed for APSC specifically, but they are often longer than you'd like for a compact setup.
Great review as always Gordon. Love that sony have produced a set of small compact lenses in the vein of the 35/2.8.. I do wonder about the timing after sigma release their very similar primes with aperture rings too... i'm sure it's just a coincidence... :P I do wonder where these fit given the aperture speeds and the cost of the 35/1.8 and 50/1.8 FE lenses which aren't exactly big but these are priced above that. Did sony indicate where they fit (price wise and designation it's clearly above these but at the cost of erm.. cost and image quality relative to the cheaper, faster lenses). Still shows how mature the sony system is now that there are approximately 2,321,532 choices of 50mm lens now :D

I am sitting at a desk and speaking to the camera. With this Sony f2.8 lens, Will I notice barrel distortion in my video or does the camera correct it internally automatically? @@djc24 yes, you've rationalised that correctly. You will have enough light and even if you don't, these cameras look great at 400 or 800 ISO. You'd only get the smaller f-number if you wanted more blurring in the background.

Great work Gordon. I personally like Sigma's rendering like you. However, I think 24GM being a bargain, probably even the biggest bargain among all five main manufacturers. Absolutely top performer Nikon Canon Panasonic will charge at least $2000 for. Being half of 24GM price, I actually think this 24mm F2.8 is pretty poor value. Look at DSLR era Canon 24mm F2.8 is a fifth of 24L price, Nikon 24mm F1.8G has fantastic optical performance, a third of 24mm F1.4G price. Nikon 35mm F1.8G used to be a quarter of 35mm F1.4G price, Canon 35mm F2IS is a third of 35L II.
You're right, there were a lot of bargains in the DSLR mounts, something that's lacking in the mirrorless World. BUT equally many of those cheaper DSLR mount lenses weren't as sharp towards the corners as these new ones. As for the 24 1.4 GM, it's an amazing lens, and very well-priced, although obviously bigger than these ones.
I think the 24mm makes sense. Between the 40 and the 50, don't know why they need both.......a 35 and a 50 would have made more sense to me, along with the 24.

Alright. I bit the bullet. Just wandered into London Drugs and put my money down. I thought the box was empty, but no, there was a lens in there. It's impossibly small. I use an FX3, an RS2, SVMX, and usually the 14mm GM on my channel for less populated walkabouts. Nature stuff. But that setup is huge and very aggressive for walking around in the downtown core or among people at car shows. I now have my urban inconspicuity rig complete. This lens, the FX3, Roland binaural earbuds, and a crane M3. I was going to just go back to APSC for city stuff. Now I don't have to.
Can you do a photo of some stars , some astrophotography , just to let us know how is the coma aberration on this 24mm? Just post a reply here if you can, thank you!

The Sigma did seem to manually focus in chunks when i tested it on the Alpha 1, not sure why... I'll check the aperture Q.

14:15 I'd get Viltrox FE 24 f/1.8 which has minimal focus breathing and costs only $400.

If you already have the Sigma, I wouldn't say you need to upgrade - they're well-matched in quality.

Thanks! The distortion is corrected for video, although as a wide lens, there'll still be some if you get too close to it.

I picked up an unused Sigma secondhand for £350 and love it. It's certainly a very sharp lens even wide open unlike fast lenses

I don’t think they are aiming for most buyers to buy both. I suspect it will be a case of people wanting (say) the 24mm + 50mm OR the 40mm.
Would’ve made more sense if the Sony 40mm was a pancake lens like the Canon 40mm.

I wish I could but where I live it's hard to get a good astro shot.
If Sony released a 60, 65, or 70mm lens with this design, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
