- When I first bought my travel trailer, I had no idea how it worked and I spent many long hours figuring everything out on my own. This video demonstrates how a travel trailers electrical system works. I explain exactly how each component to the electrical system works including the 12volt battery, the converter, the shore power, the fuse box, the circuit breaker box, the circuit breakers, and everything pertaining to the electrical system. I don’t know how anything works. I inherited this stationary rv that is plugged into city water and city electric and the plumbing goes automatically into the septic tank on the property. Half my outlets don’t work but don’t wanna start a fire or anything - been watching UA-cam videos to learn. Thank you so much for this video .

will all units work if you have no battery hooked up. when on shore power?
Usually not because the battery helps keep everything running on 12volts (battery power). Some lights, and sometimes the water heater, and other appliances need a battery because they don't run on 120volts house power. That's how the converter mostly converts SHORE POWER to 12VOLTS is through the battery so to answer your question. Depending on the kind of trailer you have , no not all units will work. 12 volt lights, break lights, outside lights, and anything 12volts wont work unless you have a really GOOD CONVERTER

`I’m that guy. I’m converting an all aluminum cargo trailer into our home on wheels. Since we started just as COVID hit it has been a struggle. Supply train wreck coast of products up 25%. Now the electrical has been frustrating. Not a lot of info I could find on the internet. This video popped up on my feed this morning. Benn trying to find out the proper way to ground the electrical system to the aluminum frame. A lot of talk about dissimulation metals.
I know how they work because I've been in enough RVs and I looked at how they were setup. I've never installed an electrical system. I've fixed numerous RVs from not having power but the ground wires, I've never had to touch. I'm pretty sure there is a spot to ground near the electrical panel but im not sure. That is avery good question!

Great video, I have had the fuse switch and the GFCI both disable the system and it took awhile to figure them out.

Great job very informative, But I have a different problem I got in a hurry to get shore power to my just purchased 2012 Keystone Alpine 39 ft fifth wheel and plugged into 240 volt now I haven't got any 120 v ac where do I start to trouble shoot if you can help would be greatly appreciated there's not much on this topic on youtube or on the web THANKS

Hi Brian nice job. I have a suggestion that would help me - When towing my trailer and its 7 way plug is installed could you include the circuit that show how the battery is being charged? What components are involved etc. A graduate course on installing solar panels and an inverter with Lithium batteries with the integration of your schematic would be awesome.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve stopped making videos for now so I can focus on my health more. The reason I haven’t been posting is because I was sick with cancer and I’ve since had the tumor removed but I’m still in the stages of recovery! Maybe one day I’ll pick back up where I left off!
Great video, thanks. What do you think is the most likely culprit if my trailer power stopped working while we were camping in heavy rain (plugged into shore). All fuses are good and no breakers tripped. Would it be the fuse switch? Where would be a good place to start?
Could be that or it could be the plug itself

At 2:34 you say “without a good battery system, the appliances won’t work right when relying solely on the converter”
My trailer doesn’t have a battery. I noticed that even Turing a second light on, the other one dims. Then…when I had my fridge on, a fuse switch tripped when the furnaces tried to turn on.
What ever it was that tripped, reset itself after a few seconds.
Is this all because I don’t have a better hooked up?
I really thought I replied to this comment a while ago... I'm sorry. I must've never sent it. You need to look for the red and black wires that come off of your electrical panel to your converter. Red and black wires go to the battery system to charge the battery so if you don't see any indication of red and black wires (without a battery) then I would say your trailer awkwardly doesn't have one.
Also, you can look up the model and type of trailer you have and ask google. Type your model and trailer then write, "battery system?"
Can i ask what generally triggers the generator to fire up automatically. Is it sensing the 12vdc out of the converter or is the converter set up for a certain dc level that tells the generator we need more dc?
Or is the generator automatically fired up as a result of ac usage?
I’m not sure I understand. My travel trailer doesn’t have a generator. A generator is usually a device that generates power on its own such as a solar powered generator or a gas powered generator. They’re usually very loud and used when your power goes out. Nothing I have in my trailer generates power automatically. All the power comes from the shore power or the 12 volt battery. The converter helps to convert household power 120 volts to DC 12 volts along with the battery that just produces 12 volt. Unless you have an automatic generator that turns on when it senses the powers out, idk what your talking about buddy

Doesn’t it first go to a battery disconnect switch?
I have a 16' TT that is also on 30 amps and my water pump is not working off of 12v. I replaced the pump a couple of months ago because it was leaking. It was easy after watching a couple of You Tube videos. My pump is working fine now, but not off of 12v. I took the battery in and it was fully charged but it showing it was bad. I bought another one and again no power so I traced the wiring and there was a lot of rust and corrosion on the contacts where the 30 amp fuse connects. I tore it all apart and just ordered new wiring from Amazon and now, I hope I can crimp it all together properly. I bought 10 gauge for ground and 6 gauge for Red and black lines. My black line is white. Is it because it is rated for marine quality. Shouldn't really matter. Seems like it is probably more water proof but I'm gonna change it out for the black just to make sure everything is new. I did check the fuse and it is good, but I'm gonna change it too. I will be using your diagram when I wire it all back together. I'll keep you posted!

to answer your question, I don't think it matters what color it is. Thats just so you don't get confused I would imagine. Personally, I've never replaced any wiring before so i wouldn't know. I made this video because I struggled for months trying to figure out why my power was being weird and I couldn't find any videos that could teach me everything I wanted to know.. So I made one

Do you ground the shore power to the chassis of the RV/Trailer . . . I dont see why but I dont know what's proper.
I'm pretty sure yes ... If you look at where the cables connect to the battery on the front of the travel trailer and follow those wires, you will see it connected to the chassis as a ground
My converter runs Constantly. Then goes up in smoke! I’m on my,fourth converter. What would cause the converter, to constantly run?
The converter should be constantly running and taking up a certain amount of juice. It converts the port power to 12volt DC as described in this video. Your battery may not be powerful enough to help the house power push the amount of 12 volt connections you have... I would look into the requirements and make sure everything is the way the converter needs it

Thank you so very much. My GFCI started tripping and I would reset not paying attention. I was cooking dinner lost all power, haven't gotten it figured out yet. Full time living batteries have been disconnected due to an idiot cut my cable to My tow motor idk why or what he was thinking. " Who does sh. . like that needless to say I'm at a loss. I've replaced GFCI in bathroom it wouldn't reset I replaced outside outlet and kitchen. Tried to cut power back on " Nothing"😭☹️🤔

Can anyone think of a reason why the brake wire would be going into the trailer and then back to the brakes? I don't know at this point if it is attached to anything in there..will update when I do but just thought I'd throw it out there. Seems weird. Asking b/c there is no power going to brakes.

My inside 2006 aljo lights don’t works. But the microwave & ac works etc…. What’s going on??? Can you help
its probably a fuse... i would recommend getting a multimeter and checking all your fuses to make sure they're working properly and a set of backup fuses
1990 e 350 Ford 7.5 l I have no rear lighting at all, no brake lights turn signals etc. In front everything works , any idea ?
try to find diagrams of similar wiring for your brake lights and go examine them yourself to see if you can find a similar blue print diagram. Once you can establish how they receive power, then it's just a cake walk from there my friend

Hello. I have a problem with my 1989 sunlite pop up camper. At the entrance of the electricity cord it says that this connection is for 110/125 volts ac. and has a cord with a regular connection. but when i connect it with an extension to my house, only the plugs work but not the lights. What do you think can be?
it sounds like it could be a bad plug... They sell kits that you can re do the power cord. Make sure you purchase the correct one that matches that cord... Unless, it was already replaced, and someone didn't get the right plug.... Then you have the wrong plug and it could start a fire
I've had a power cord fry on me before and my electricity was acting very strange...

im sorry i just realized what you said... your plug is fine! your camper needs battery power to run the lights.... Check your battery and if you dont have one... get one because usually where the connection is to haul it away, theres a battery right there that connects to your campers circuit board.. Check your fuses! If you watch the video again, I explain how your battery sends 12volts to your lights and how it does that.. It goes from the battery to the fuses, to the 12 volt electrical components.. So you either have bad fuses, or a bad battery... I used to have to charge my battery all the time with house power. If you don't have a battery, the owners before probably used a converter only and they probably had problems because you need a battery to help the converter and visa versa... converters are usually behind the circuit board
the converter is what is supposed to charge the battery.... if the converter is not working... your battery isn't charging! I hooked up a battery charger to my campers battery one time, and boom my lights started working again because my converter went bad
U may have contractors that are inbetween the shore power and converter Generally right where ur shore power comes in inside the camper.And they are not cheap u have to go to a AIr conditioning parts store to get them basically they are a breakers. Better have about 200 for each.
Contractors? What the heck are those and what are they doing between shore and the converter? Sounds expensive!
The CONVERTER only takes 120V from shore power or a generator and charges the battery. An INVERTER takes 12V DC from battery and makes it usable 120V AC. When not plugged into AC (Shore power or generator) you will only have DC available until you add an INVERTER.
That's Correct!
To expand on this, it means the size of your inverter will determine how much total power (watts) you can use throughout your RV. Hence why sometimes plugging in that extra "thing" is sometimes the straw that breaks the camel's back.
However, the inverters aren't strong enough to run major appliances like Microwaves or Air Conditioners.....They get power directly from the shoreline via a transfer switch built into the inverter that allows the 120V AC Shoreline current to pass directly through the inverter, to the power distribution block.
Theoretically if you had a 3000 watt inverter, you may be able to kick on the Microwave or Air Conditioner, but it would draw around 100-150 amps from your battery, draining even high capacity lithium batteries in just a few hours (20 minutes for cheap lead-acid batteries)

@@brianrussell5789 every camper is different, so if you know some basics then you can look at how your system is wired.....Inverters usually come factory installed only to supply AC to your outlets...they don't supply your AC breakers unless you do some rewiring.....part of that reason is because one of your AC breakers is connected to the converter which then charges your battery....this would cause a loop where your battery is constantly charging itself but losing power in the process going through the inverter and converter to convert DC to AC to DC
I plan on upgrading my inverter this spring with a combined inverter/charger from Victron....this would allow me to connect the inverter to the AC breakers and then feed both battery and shore to inverter....the inverter would prevent the endless charge loop but also has a feature that will supplement shore power with battery power if needed....for instance, if you have a 15amp shore connection but need to run AC or Microwave

Very good video for understanding circuits but your wiring diagrams are incomplete because they do not show any ground wires and should not be relied upon for a DIY installation. The negative post on the battery is grounded to the chassis by itself for the DC ground The ground bar in the AC panel box and chassis bonding wires for the converter and inverter are connected separate from the DC output ground. It is important that these be installed correctly to prevent an electric shock from a "hot skin" and/or fire.
I appreciate the comment Roy. This was by no means meant to be a DIY installation video... This video teaches you why certain things might go wrong with your electrical system. It's just meant to help people understand why it's happening. Not how to fix it. Although, I have found that once you figure out how something works.... Those connections on my diagram just show one connection to everything to simplify the basics of what's happening
This was no help. I knew all about that. What I needed to know is that cord I hook up to plug into my truck what wires to hook color-wise from the trailer to the cord then plug in to the truck
