  • Making a largish platter on the wheel with a bit of trimming of a foot ring and some slip decoration.
    My wheel's not ideal for wide pots as it's slowest speed is a bit too fast.
    Anyway here's my attempt at one, sorry the card ran out at the end of me throwing it.

    I did 4 years of pottery in school and left it there. Now my daughter decided to do her sr project on the stress relieving aspects of pottery. I jumped on the wheel and turned a pot like it was just yesterday, after 35 years it seems i still got a nack for it and my kid is a natural. She turned a small bowl first try! Thanks for all your vids they are truly inspiring me to create. My new wheel is on the way and I spend my early mornings watching your magic. I can only hope to mimic your art. Thanks

    Hello, I love your videos. I'm trying to learn the turning of the potter's wheel. But it is not easy. The correct potter's wheel and find the right clay is difficult. And unfortunately, I'm left handed ..

    Are you good a sculpting, or at least ok at it? You could sculpt an animal (lets say an owl) and put it into a closed sphere that you threw and cut designs, kind of like a double walled vase. Leave some (a bit) of clay at the top of the sphere thing to sculpt an owl face.

    Would love to see a video or even a couple videos going over wheel types, bat vs non-bat, horse power, RPM, kick-wheel vs powered etc etc. There doesn't seem to be one out there.

    • @IngletonPottery
      @IngletonPottery  10 років тому +2

      To be honest I can't comment on that.
      I've used this ancient old wheel since I started 20+ years ago, and never used any other.
      I wouldn't go for a kick wheel, but I'd love to have a cone drive wheel that you can make go really slowly for bigger stuff.
      Cheers, Dan.

    I laughed a bit to myself when you talked about the amount of time it takes to do a foot ring because it would take an eternity to make a bowl like that on a wood lathe compared to how fast you are. A question, probably stupid, but... can you re-use all the clay that ends up in the basin below the wheel?

    • @IngletonPottery
      @IngletonPottery  10 років тому +8

      As a Yorkshireman you should know I don't waste anything.
      All the waste clay goes back through the pugmill and is mixed with the bagged clay to make it softer if needed.
      All the sloppy stuff is collected to make the coloured slips.
      What do you do with your woodturnings ?
      Cheers, Dan.

    • @baconsoda
      @baconsoda 10 років тому +4

      youdanxxx I usually throw them in the fire cos they're crap! I've actually stopped turning and I've been using the lathe as a shelf for about 6 months but I'm going to get at it again soon. The problem with turning is that you fill the house with bowls and vases so I made a lot of pens in the last few months I was turning which are good fun and small. Circumstances here recently changed a lot of plans but I'll get back to turning soon. I'll be posting turning videos in the near-ish future because I'm being hounded by a couple of guys to do so. I wish I could reform wood shavings but, alas, it's not to be but I'm quite happy that you can reuse the clay because I don't like waste myself so I'll enjoy your videos even more now.
      Best Wishes, Brendan.

    • @IngletonPottery
      @IngletonPottery  10 років тому +3

      baconsoda I meant to say what do you do with your wood shavings not turnings..
      I think you need to get a Wheel.
      Same principle as turning but you get your material in bags, damn site easier than seasoning wood..
      Go on Bacon Potter !

    • @baconsoda
      @baconsoda 10 років тому +3

      youdanxxx LOL, shavings are dumped in the veg area to help raise the ground and make what I hope will be a pumpkin patch. I toyed with pressing shavings and paper pulp into briquettes but never really spent much time at it because the process was slow. If I went back to look at the press again I could probably make a better one using what I learned and other ideas on UA-cam. I would be interested in pottery but I don't need another hobby right now because I have a couple of other projects in the pipeline but more of those later.

      on the lathe it is nearly complete- once a bowl is made on the wheel it requires trimming, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing.

    I was wondering if you have any suggestions for getting rim cracks, I have been trying to make mine a bit wider with about 10 pounds of clay though.

    • @IngletonPottery
      @IngletonPottery  10 років тому +2

      I've not really made any wide plates before but if it cracks while you throw it maybe the clay is a bit too dry, or if it cracks when it dries maybe it's drying out a bit to fast and you could cover with polythene to dry it out really slowly.
      Not sure, sorry, Dan
