Very true. I picked up a 500EL for about $100 assuming it wouldn't work (I want to build a replica Apollo lunar camera), and was "disappointed" to find that not only was it in pristine condition, but it worked perfectly. Now I also have a couple of C lenses, a couple of backs, and WLF. Brilliant! I did pick up one of those $10 adapters for 9V batteries on the 'bay and it works perfectly. :-)
+Fred Patton Wow! Good deal you got. This is the thing with the E models, that most people dont even know if they work. I hope you enjoy it and find one to build your replica, sound very interesting.
Yes, this was the Hasselblad 500EL Lunar Module Pilot with 60mm Zeiss objektiv. The Camera was modified and 14 times on the Apollo program. 13 Camera are still on the moon, only one comes back from the Apollo 15 and was sold for 660,000 euros, considered one of the most expensive cameras in the World.
yes, as per the older post, I sold mine, as I found out at the camera shop, BE CAREFUL how you put the battery "shells" into the e l-m body, got them arse up, worked out, but for all the trouble, just went for a plain old 500 c/m with an 80 mm , they are only ~ $500-1,000 AUD, and you get the mechanical reliability, and it can be fixed if it jams ( see Mike Thomas channel for the "screwdriver trick" he uses {special tool}, but for general use a large jewellers flat blade will do; Also Annie 7 b channel, is silent (Japanese), but goes over the process 3 separate times, so you can understand it!).
Never understood why the EL series got so much less attention than the CM to justify such difference in prices (which still applies today, to some extent). Maybe the latter has a better reputation for reliability (don't know, just guessing), being all mechanical, or compactness. However, I had the chance (and luck) to try both and, as an amateur (so take my opinion ad such), I'd choose the EL over the CM everyday. The extra space taken by the motor isn't that much of a extra, to be honest, and provides a greater hadnling and "wielding" of the camera than the CM does. Plus, a very subjective point, but not having any knobs on the side makes it way easier to pack without worries of accidental twists and turns (I have a KIEV88, so that's something I definetely have to avoid). And besides, come on, it's the Apollo program official camera...who could ever ditch something with such a great history behind?
I can very highly recommend the 200/2000 series 6x6 analog Hasselblad camera, i very high recommend these lenses Zeiss Distagon 50mm 2.8 which have a very good close distance down to 15x15 object/scene, Zeiss Planar 110mm 2.0, Zeiss Macro Planar 120mm 4.0, Zeiss Tele-Tessar350mm 4.0 and Zeiss 2x Mutar or the later Hasselblad 2x of their own, the 110mm 2.0 gets to a very good 220mm 4.0 with the 2x a very good close up. At last but not least the Hasselblad SWC with the Zeiss Biogon 38mm 4.5
Nice video , i always wanted a medium format one but they are too expensive for college student like me . Btw just found some EL/M on ebay about $3-400 but it doesn't have a film back , i new to Hasselblad so can you recommend me on buying the right film back for the Hasselblad ? Thanks
+thienhao0910 thanks! You can get the newish A12 backs or the old 12 backs. Pretty much 90% of what you will find on ebay and stores will work. Dont get the 220 ones (a24) as they use film that is really hard to find. Also the A16 and A32 are 6x4'5 so not square. So look for A12. Check facebook groups and www.keh.com. Good luck and if you need any other help let me know.
Hi, interesting video. What caught my eye most, what is the battery pack you are using? I did a quick search after watching the video, but couldn't locate it. I have a 500C and the EL/M. I actually like the EL/M a bit more, but it doesn't get much use anymore due to the almost dead batteries. Thanks!
yes, good cameras, I finally found another one :-) and got the REAL hassy batteries, and this cord charger with it!, but one interesting thing, if you get one with a 'pistol grip' or other handle (like the Mamiya one for their tlr's, or the bronica etr's), PLEASE keep it, it fits MOST of the body's and also has a plastic 'trigger' which touches the shutter release, just on the EL-M 's put the socket button in the lower hole, so the tab can reach it. (makes these look like a police man's radar speed gun)-especially with a prism attached!!
Bought a 553 ELX after watching this video, everything works fine except that the battery cover locking button is broken. So I have to use a lot of rubber band to keep the battery cover in place. I tried to find replacement for it but there seemed to be no one selling them. Does anyone know where I can get one?
Hi there. Awesome videos by the way. Now, here is the question. I have a chance to buy a 500c. For that to happen I will probably sell my old EOS 1ds iii. What do you think? Should I do it? If so that will be my first medium format camera.
@@NicosPhotographyShow I got it. I bought a 501c thanks for all the help. It is second hand but no major issues. Now I got to unlearn everything I have lernt and adapt to the mediu format. Thanks for all your help!
most people are right, SORRY, but HASSELBLAD and electrical accessories DON'T mix, the E L M I bought has battery trouble, every time you put some in it Doesn't work, or worse JAMS on you !! now that's happened I have to do what EVERYONE SHOULD do and get a MECHANICAL 500 C / M, nice handling and the ONLY electronics come from the winder( the 503 and other models)- which if it goes arse-up, you simply put the manual crank back on and carry on shooting!!- simple.
Sorry that happened to you, my ELM still works great, but I do have 2 500CM that have failed and need repairs, the good side is that being 100% mechanical it should be fixable.
@@NicosPhotographyShow thanks for the comment, found out that my problem was a dumb mistake on my part, the battery adaptor was in the opposite way!- but easy mistake to make, as this holder can be inserted either end into the body; You went the right route, using the socket, with a battery pack/bank, this way you CAN'T arse up the polarity of the batteries!!
+ahmed al-saeed Yeah, the S2 and S2A are really nice cameras. I plan to talk about them soon but just wanted to make a short video on the Hasselblad as most people dont know about this model. ;)
Excellent camera, but repairs can be difficult like for the also excellent Kowa 66's. The Bronica Nikkor-P lenses are superb! I hope that you enjoy your Bronica for a lot of years to come!
That's why I have a big box of dead cameras and accessories. LOL!! I can buy a clean 120 back for an RB67 cheaper than I can get one repaired. When I lived in Atlanta, I'd donate the corpses to local repair centers as "parts" cameras, but I don't have that option where I currently live. Maybe I'll take that box with me the next time I head back to the city.
+ghw7192 Exactly. At least you have been considerate enough to share the dead items to give them a new life. Slowly we have less working cameras out there and we need to fix and take care of them.
The EL/M is the one used to make the fake versions of the moon camera. I have seen many on the internet. Or perhaps an MK70....have you ever seen one in person?

I wouldn't say so with this case. The came is still a Hasselblad, and mine is 4-5 years old and still going strong. I have had other Hasselblad bodies break before this one. Also cheap means if it does break I can buy another one and still be under the price of other Hasselblad body prices...
I guess best way to describe this camera is affordable. The camera is very well made and truly the price of these are very affordable for the average photographer that doesn't have a huge budget to invest in gear. When describing a product as cheap, the average human being tends to think towards poor quality. And for good reason, when things are at a lower cost they tend to cut corners in the quality of the build construction. Not all the times but in most cases. Now this camera is not new, its been out for years now and of course the value of this camera will rise or drop depending on the demand of the consumer. And so when describing a camera as cheap that might discourage a good amount of people from buying it because they have the mentality that expensive means better. But then again its better for me, who likes going on ebay and finding affordable cameras that people are simply to ignorant to even consider, like the nikon d3, d700, the hasselblad elm and soo many more.

What would make this an absolute killer deal would be a if someone came up with a way to convert this to manual winder operation
I wonder if someone could turn one into a trigger wind, like an old Canon rangefinder
And where do I buy this?
AND the release being an electric switch is softer than on the mechanical CM, this does help hand held, I did check this does lead to sharper pics
Thanks for the video! Could you compare ELM with rolleiflex 6008?

Its a AA adapter, but they sell a few adapters on ebay, check hasselblad el battery.
EL stands for "electric", not "electronic". It's a mechanical analog camera with an electric motor drive.
Yup, made the mistake. My bad.
