What Indigenous tribe of this continent, lucky or gifted to have survived to this day, would ever have the audacity to have a member actually name their child "johnny two feathers"? The joke pretty much ended there where it began. Only if you knew the kind of comedian Norm was respected as from his peers could anyone even make sense as to why people were laughing. How many indigenous people even knew who Norm McDonald was? Or how inventive & well respected among his peer of comedians? What prevented me from laughing was not the shock of what Norm had Johnny say, but that all of it was true, & still is true, a dastardly act of deliberate genocide nobody would dare attempt to make subject of in a joke nor have any possibility of it not damaging their career, except for Norm who has countless times pulled this on unsuspecting crowds & the only comedian to have gotten away with it every single time. As Whoopie Goldberg said trying to explain him after another confrontational joke, "look you have to understand Norm" lol really? I saw some dude sitting there but I don’t know if he was Jewish. How do you know he was Jewish? Also you said “Jews “I only saw one man... are you dumb or just discriminatory?
The genius of Norm MacDonald is that through sheer comic fucking aura, he forced the entire crowd to laugh at the most inappropriate time, during a serious monologue on a issue for which the assembled crowd is legitimately sympathetic, while he didn't so much as say a word or smirk.
Try again. The British conquered, they didn't exterminate. Who would be left to tax and trade with if everyone was dead? The British often struck agreements with local populations, such as the Native Americans (who the colonial Americans then wiped out after the War of Independence, by the way), as the British saw more value in trade than with genocide.

I consider myself a Norm fan since before it was cool, and missed this also.
He mastered the art of making you feel awkwardly uncomfortable while making you laugh
Why tf we laughing about genocide?
You missed the point entirely. He mastered the art of taking the piss out of Marlon Brando. This is a parody. People are laughing at Norm making fun of Brando for his Oscar speech
Since when is it the audiences responsibility to understand the person delivering the joke? It is the comedians responsibility to understand the audience. You got this right saying Norm mastered the art of turning an audience. One could say Hitler had the same gift, or art or whatever you want to name it as. It comes pretty easy like a trick or a treat but getting only tricked with no treat. Where was the joke? Oh there was none you were tricked to laugh at genocide. See the joke? No, but do you see my fingers curled up in a fist?
I can totally relate as to the justification Will Smith must of felt after delivering his slap to Chris Rock during another awards ceremony. This is how it starts. Lol, isn't THAT funny? Because THAT thought finally made me laugh.🤣

How?
Norm is a genius with a big heart.
For those who don’t know he was doing a parody of Marlon Brando’s speech at the Oscars in the 70s when he won an award and instead of him coming up to the stage he had a lady Native American come up and basically say the same stuff this guy said but she got booed.
And it turned out she wasn’t even a real American Indian.
Parody of a 1970's speech. This is so low-brow, outdated, and ridiculous. Sad. The reference is literally 50 years old.

The genius of Norm MacDonald is that through sheer comic fucking aura, he forced the entire crowd to laugh at the most inappropriate time, during a serious monologue on a issue for which the assembled crowd is legitimately sympathetic, while he didn't so much as say a word or smirk.
"There is nothing funny about the extermination of a people."
Zoom in on the British guy laughing his ass off.
Try again. The British conquered, they didn't exterminate. Who would be left to tax and trade with if everyone was dead?
The British often struck agreements with local populations, such as the Native Americans (who the colonial Americans then wiped out after the War of Independence, by the way), as the British saw more value in trade than with genocide.

@@itsm3th3b33 its not making fun of her, its just the awkwardness of an event meant for fun and celebration met with a complete killjoy about something unrelated and serious. usually norm wants people to boo him by saying outrageous things but this time around he just brought up a guy to talk about heavy stuff while he stands there solemnly. Everyone is laughing, waiting for the bit where Norm reveals the underlying joke, but it never comes and then he just has Johnny Two Feathers exit stage. I guess it’s supposed to be a spoof on a similar thing Marlon Brando did as well as Norm dicking around since he isn’t even receiving the award he’s up there for someone else and then he brings up a third person to accept the award for the person who had norm accept the award for them.
It’s not super deep or anything, Norm MacDonald fans just like to pretend they understand him better than you cus then it gives them an excuse to suck at copying him (in other words just saying heinous things and then being like “what? i was just joking”)
Idc what anyone says Norm was the greatest comedian of all time. He understood it far better and deeper than my one ever.
