I am so thankful that my mother called me in from playing outside to watch this as it happened. I was only 11, but she knew it would be important to have witnessed this. I am so thankful to my father, who listened to Mahlia Jackson on the radio and bought some of her albums so that I new her music at this tender age. I am thankful to both of them for teaching this second generation Italian-American that there was no difference between black and white, and they showed this in the way they treated the African-Americans we met. Thank God Almighty! We aren't fully there yet, but we are much much closer than we were on this day 52 years ago. With love to my Brothers and Sisters on this good earth~
I was a newborn when this happened, but I had the pleasure of thanking an elderly civil rights advocate as we sat together for lunch at a Woolworth's counter in a southern state. It humbles me to know the great heritage and legacy our ancestors left for us and urges me to uphold and extend this legacy.
Mahalia's musical influence is everywhere. Even Tina Turner, Pattie Labelle, Aretha, Della Reese, and so many others stated that she was a powerful influence on their musical career. Thank God for such a woman as Mahalia.
I just want to point out how this was decades ago and watching this still gives me goosebumps 🥲❤️ May our new generation stand up like Mahalia did in favor of the gospel and also for racial equality 😍
This is just incredible! I was told by someone who attended the March that people were walking to their buses to leave but returned when they heard Mahalia Jackson singing. I was also told that during Dr. King's speech, it was Mahalia Jackson who told whisper to Dr. King, now tell us about that dream. The "I have a Dream" was never suppose to be a part of the speech.
Mahalia Jackson is America's icon, a woman of God who was filled with His Spirit, and it shows by her singing with such enthusiasm!!! She was FOR REAL!!!
Start of this clip You See, Belafonte, Newman ,Brando, Garner , Lancaster, Two more Italian American actors & many More. This was stating a Big One .Mahalia's March is on.
Yes, Thanks .I just Noticed a bunch more -J. Farantino ,looks like Famous Boxer then ,[after actor in white jacket throwing punch,ha] , Sidney Portier..They go by too fast.....
Mahalia Jackson........... Sing sister sing..... Sing to the glory of the most high AHAYAH the great I AM THAT I AM Exodus 3:14. Mahalia Jackson a woman that sings chills into the spirit of every living thing including plants and animals..... Sing my sister.....,...SING !
Me too. Maybe God will allow us to dream about her. Imagine - Mahalia Jackson and all the millions of us who love her, including Jesus, and MLK, singing together. Maybe that's what heaven is like.
Now you are no longer in the dark and you are not alone!! There is nothing too hard that you're living that God is not able to handle it! This helps me face life every day. Carry on!
Born in 1970, I wasn't in Washington when this was recorded. But I know that if I were alive, I would have been in that crowd, listening to Miss Mahalia Jackson and MLK.
Megan Lafleur Oh honey I hope you can keep the faith and never cease to pray. All God's children cannot help but be grieved, and all conscious people period more than a little frightened but He was gracious enough to send Ms Jackson and Dr. King, His grace I am sure will keep us strong until it leads us home.
Very memorable! Second only to her film debut in Imitation of Life 1958. She gave a performance singing Trouble of the world that brought tears to the eyes!
During the March on Washington rally, Martin Luther King, Jr. was delivering a dull intellectual speech about the history of Southern resistance to racial equality and was bombing with the audience. Mahalia Jackson was behind him on the podium and, remembering an earlier version of the "I Have a Dream" speech she'd heard him give elsewhere, leaned over to him and said, "Give ’em the dream, Martin! Give ’em the dream!” He did, it electrified the crowd and it's what he’s most remembered for to this day.
Yes, zeppolino, sir, I am 73, I remember those times as well, people of all colors love her. She is in heaven now singing before the throne in the heavenly choir, showing them how it's done. My ancestry from Europe, Czechoslovakia now Czech republic, and grandfather Irish--he loved her too, and he was straight from Ireland as an 11 year old boy! We both loved her.
When I hear her sing every word that comes out of her mouth lets me know what they went through back than. You can feel that praising of the lord and the pride of being black in her voice
Thank you, Heavenly Father, for walking us this morning! Thank you for being everything we need! For always being our Father, a bridge over troubled waters, for supplying our needs, for being a healer, and a way-maker!
Thankyou, God for such a great Lady and a mighty voice of song and praise ministry that she shared with your people for many years. 🙏 God Bless her Soul Eternally. We loved this Woman of God. ❤💋😇
Mother Mahalia sung that Song. She sung that whole Crowd extremely Happy. I Hope & Pray that when I start Singing, that I am very Powerful & Strong just like she was. She really Inspired me to Sing the Gospel to Everybody. Praise God.

Yes!!! I love Mahalia Jackson. What a woman she was. What an influence she was for other greats! What a beautiful Queen she was!
The difference is they're all secular sell outs, Mahalia wasn't. She was offered tons of money to do so many times but declined

The guy you identified as "J. Farantino" is actually Tony Franciosa, an Actors' Studio alumnus. (Take it from an old person.)
You also see Aretha Franklin and Lena Horne as well
Josephine Baker is shown on the other clip of this day.

All I can say at this moment is Thank You Lord.
