That was one of the greatest moments ever. Two of the greatest people who ever lived. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and the beloved gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.
In 60 years we’ve lost so much as a people. - The loss of families made up of husbands wives and children, with a man as head and protector of the household - The normalisation of baby mamas where young women have multiple children for multiples of different inadequate men, all out of wedlock. -The vulgarisation of modern music culture, and - prolific sexual promiscuity where a generation of women, encouraged by the weakness of men, behave like women of the street But most of all what we have lost in 60 years has been SOUL. The “soul” so evident and vibrant in the voice of Mahalia Jackson and those present in the hall with her that night in Chicago. Even now, these many years later you can feel that the spirit of the ancestors were amongst them that night.
+Derrick Phelps that's what i was thinking bruh. Wish i was in there at that moment. Problem is, if we was in there....we wouldn't be typing this right now coz we'd be gone. That was 50 years ago...most of those folk gone
Gachi I'm Blessed my father is alive and well and he was at the I have a dream speech. My grandma is alive and is old than King by 6 years. So some of the people in that room are still alive
You posted what I was thinking. She knew his burden. He became child-like/Innocent/shy. They both knew what was coming. I just ran across this today. I watched it about 5 times in a row. Praise God.
Ps. Paul and to no that your dad marched with him, and what your mom did, there's a lot I could tell about that time, but I'd have to write a small book about it. It was very deep, I'll leave it at that. I'm sure so many others could do the same.
Quintilla Batts I think (in my opinion) when we integrated to the other side some of us got the “Big Head” and “Brainwashed” and forgot where we came from. Black Love was stronger back in the day than it is Now. 👍🏿
This era was STRONG, UNITED AND UPLIFTED EACH OTHER. You could feel God’s presence just from this powerful song . It servers as a message that TOGETHER WE SHALL OVERCOME! God is so amazing, he puts ppl in the right place at the right time! May you both rest in love and thank you for paving the way!
I can't help but think and notice the difference in the movements that Martin Luther King lead and the smoking hot mess that Donald Trump is leading. Those people back then were lead by facts, truth and righteousness. These clowns following Trump are being led by lies, deception and conspiracy theories. It's pathetic. If people want to see what a real movement look like then they should look at videos like this.
@Anthony Yarrell scripture shows that when God answer our cries we NEVER recognize and appreciate it. let me ask you..do you or anyone commenting (including myself) truly serve the Lord and obey his teachings? You out of pocket.
Anthony Yarrell If you read your Bible... GOD punishes all people for idolatry until they learn the error of their ways. You may not want to hear it but our ancestors were idolatrous and some of them still practiced the old religions when they came to the Western Hemisphere and wherever the old religious practices have remained rampant are the communities and countries that experience the worst poverty and extreme conditions until today - New Orleans, Mississippi, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, you name it. I am not saying this as an outsider. I am saying this as a Caribbean man who is 98.3% genetically subsaharan African. The GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob DETESTS idolatry, witchcraft and the like. There is absolutely no polytheistic or pagan nation or empire in the History of mankind that has ever withstood GOD ALMIGHTY’s judgement it isn’t just Black folks that have tasted of this. All the empires of man that worshipped idols of some kind all faced the same or similar types of judgements throughout the centuries. The same judgements are coming for those countries that are in power now that do not honor GOD today. Wait and see...it’s just a matter of time. Selah...

It is my HONOR to carry her name EVERY DAY of my life. She was such a great woman, and source of strength, wisdom, and inspiration for the civil rights movement and multiple genres of music. She is an icon.
For those who don’t know: the battle of Jericho in the Bible was a battle won through NON VIOLENCE! God told Joshua to MARCH around the walls and it’s was their faith and obedience that made the walls come tumbling down. How allegorical. What parallels. God blessed Mahalia and Dr. King to understand this is a reference to their own struggle and used the metaphor to both uplift Dr king and the rest of the movement that night!!

I love this video so much it really is heartwarming especially Dr Kings genuine smile that he flashes as soon as the chorus was raised what a time to be alive
Because Jesus was the unifying factor. THE JESUS FACTOR, THE HOLY SPIRIT FACTOR, THE LOVE OF THE FATHER FACTOR. Sadly, we are no longer a Christian Nation that all changed in the sixties an early 70s and onward. White people respected Mahalia Jackson They respected her gifting and her spirituality. She had a profound effect on white people all over the world bringing them into a tender place in their hearts to be open to God and she led them right to the altar.
Such a powerful moment and her voice is amazing! If you notice at the beginning someone gave her a mic and she simply held it in her hand and sang over the crowd. Her voice so powerful, majestic, and commanding!
Dr. Martin Luther King LOVED him some Mahalia Jackson! Blessing and blushing all over his face with her strong gospel voice. Mahalia' s voice even gave me tingles listening to her. My grandma Viola (RIH) used to love her some Mahalia Jackson, her favorite song was "Move On Up A Little Higher"....
Wow. I can only humbly agree with so many opinions expressed on this page! Mahalia Jackson, for me, represents a great spirit in this world as did Dr. King. I think she did not take the mic because she wanted, in that moment, not to be a lead singer but part of the people who lifted their voices for Dr. King that night. She used her strong voice to lead the people while standing with the people. Where have all these people gone? Everyone today craves their 15 minutes of fame like a drug. They represent people with shruken spirits who can never lead anyone because no real love fills their hearts--only the desire for fame and money. I think Rev. King had such joy in his eyes--without a trace of impatience--because he saw the union or united spirit of these good people in that church that night. I hope he also realized, in that moment, that his movement, based on nonviolence, would triumph and the walls of Jericho, indeed, would come tumblin' down.
I know Dr King enjoyed this😊 that beautiful smile says it all. As for Mahalia what a beautiful gifted woman😊her smile also can light up a room. God bless them both 👏🏿👏🏾👏👏🏻👬🏾👫🏼👬🏿👬🏼👭🏽💕💕💕RIP.
This is very great History here. This was way before my time. I was not Born until years Later which was December 1973: Now I get a chance to see what happened and what took place in History & the Church during the 1960's before I was Born. Dr. King spoke very Well & Mother Mahalia Jackson sung very Well.
Back in the 1960s we were a collective intelligent people. How did we get here today.and the more important question is how do we get back to that collective intelligence? This is the question for our leadership How to get our people to cooperate with each other.

She had a profound effect on white people all over the world bringing them into a tender place in their hearts to be open to God and she led them right to the altar.

@@songbirdforjesus2381 Now that is so true! I couldn't have said it better. Its a shame things took a turn for the worst.
my favorite thing about this clip is Dr. King's genuine smile. I love to see him smiling.
Yes, me too!
I love you too Mahalia. Your voice was a gift from God and you used it well.
Beautiful, would of love to have been there. Truly blessing
It's good to see him smile for a while. I love you king!
2 of the greatest public figures of the 20th century doing what they do best: bringing out great things in everybody in the room!
This was at my home church in Chicago, Il. New Friendship Baptist Church. That was my minister Stroy Freeman giving the microphone to Ms. Jackson.
Such a powerful moment and her voice is amazing! If you notice at the beginning someone gave her a mic and she simply held it in her hand and sang over the crowd. Her voice so powerful, majestic, and commanding!
A great time to have been alive!
She looks SOOOOO happy while she’s singing!
She was one of God's people. We should be the happiest on this Earth!
Two of the most amazing people in the world! May God bless their souls!

This is very great History here. This was way before my time. I was not Born until years Later which was December 1973: Now I get a chance to see what happened and what took place in History & the Church during the 1960's before I was Born. Dr. King spoke very Well & Mother Mahalia Jackson sung very Well.
Dr king was ahead of his time he said the word millineum
Back in the 1960s we were a collective intelligent people. How did we get here today.and the more important question is how do we get back to that collective intelligence? This is the question for our leadership
How to get our people to cooperate with each other.
