Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. requested Mahalia Jackson sing this song before he gave his speech using the analogy of the Declaration of Independence being a "bad check" marked "insufficient funds". In return as Dr. King was near the end of his written speech Mahalia, only sitting a few feet away, shouted "Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!" Dr. King stopped reading his speech and spoke from the heart about his "Dream" for America that would change the world! Thank you Mahalia Jackson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for this great day in American history!
As a little Dutch boy I listened to the only record my parents had of her. Again and again. I could hear the power and honesty in her voice even if I didn\t understand the meaning of the English words. And now I am 50 years older and still moved by her passion.
To the future 🤣🤣 Danielle Brooks will do her justice and Robyn Roberts specifically said she was using her OWN voice 😲👩🏾🎤🗣👀👀👂🏽👂🏽I was watching Danielle singing in the color purple and she sho nuff sounds like her😎😲😲😲🗣👂🏽👂🏽🤝🏾👀👀👍🏾
This is the type of healing needed today because alot of this nonsense needs to come to a complete halt. Jus thankful I stumbled across this it's amazing.
THE LATE GREAT MAHALIA JACKSON...GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.... SPIRITUAL, AND AN ANOINTED VOICE... NO ONE CAN TOP THIS....SINGING IN HEAVEN NOW AS WE SPEAK
I couldn't help but cry, the anointing was so powerful, she surely was anointed by God to sing. It sounded fresh now as it was back then...l give God all the glory..
She was a great vessel of God and her people. The miracle is that at the time she knew how to unite people. I'm impressed so much I feel compelled to rethink the history of the US.
After she sang, Mahalia made possible a pivotal moment in our heritage. Dr King began speaking from prepared remarks. The speech was about how the words of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were like a bad check to Black people. He was on page 13 of the prepared speech when he paused to take a breath. "Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!" she shouted. He turned and look at her and moved the speech to his left and never looked at it again. She had heard him speak of his dream in Birmingham and Detroit and he knew what she meant. There was no "dream" in his prepared remarks, but he began speaking his heart, using the words of those church sermons. Had Queen Mahalia not shouted those words, the "I have a dream" part of that speech not become a part of our heritage as Americans.
The reporter probably didn’t know that Dr. King usually asked Mahalia Jackson to sing specific songs whenever she sang before he preached. Also likely, the same reporter probably didn’t know Mahalia turned around and encouraged her dear friend, MLK to “tell them about the dream, Martin!” Which lead to one of the greatest moments in the 20th Century.
Thanks KJMcRae for posting this "March On Washington gem of the World's Greatest Gospel Singer", Miss Mahalia Jackson. All eyes were on her, she mesmerized the crowd, took them to church! They were fighting for our freedom - jobs, housing, going in the front door, sitting in the front of the bus, going to schools of your choice, using city pool, library, use of recreational facilities, the right to vote, right to health care, etc. - how do we show gratitude?
Hearing her is a glory and a meditation. I was just getting ready to step out into the adult world, and the movement helped guide my steps in the right direction. A long time, and we're still on that road.
The Worlds Greatest Gospel Singer: Mother Mahalia Jackson: She is Gone on to Glory, but she will never ever be forgotten in this World, especially the Gospel Music World. I can only Imagine she is Singing with all of the Heavenly Host of Angels over there in Glory. Someday I will be a Professional Gospel Singer: Mother Mahalia has Inspired me to Sing The GOSPEL.
What a beautiful voice i come here because godfather of Harlem lol . We are grateful to people like these. Your struggle against racism paved the way for the right path that ends injustice. Thank you all.
I watched Mahalia documentary. I was first introduced to Mahalia Jackson through the movie Imitation of Life is when I first heard her voice. And I know I heard her music at my grandma's house I didn't realize who she was until I watched her on Imitation of Life as a young child. What a powerful voice. I tell you those folks back then they didn't play Jesus they didn't play Church true Christian. Our church's now or Social Clubs and huge money making businesses. If you can perform on stage and it don't hurt to have a good voice. Know the Bible by hard you can be a pastor! I don't claim to be a Christian anymore the word is used to lightly. I Profess only be a follower of Christ.
What people don't realize is that when Leontyne Price sings the greatest of European operatic and classical literature, THIS (Mahalia Jackson) is what she calls upon to execute the artform...and what brings audiences to their feet.

You could feel every syllable she sang! Every word you felt so very deep, deep bc of the fight, the struggle, the hope of change…in honor of MLK, oh the dream still goes on, hopefully we will actually awaken one of these days to the dream realized and we will stand side by side, hand in hand, brother and sister!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️💔❤️☮️
I think she improvises lyrics. Like Frank Sinatra, "in the pocket", but she's not a jukebox. But she speaks up for people about what they're most troubled by. 2021, we're coming out of a long era where we killed people for fun, not even for profit, and it only lasted because all of we codependent junior torture artists never questioned it, never said it hurt us to do it. "What, you mean this is supposed to make sense, this destruction of Yugoslavia? You're kidding me! It didn't make sense killing three million people in Vietnam, why should it make sense now?" Paraphrasing the inmost thoughts of Richard Holbrooke, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, etc. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that African slavery in the US was never profitable either, was always the worst way to grow the crops, so the South was suicidal from its first days.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. requested Mahalia Jackson sing this song before he gave his speech using the analogy of the Declaration of Independence being a "bad check" marked "insufficient funds". Mahalia Jackson was a true gospel singer.
Mahalia, dearest, precious in God's sight.
She was a great vessel of God and her people. The miracle is that at the time she knew how to unite people. I'm impressed so much I feel compelled to rethink the history of the US.
billinindiana midwest how incredible it would've been to be in that audience! The spirituality of her performance is breathtaking.

Reporter - "All the speeches in the world couldn't have brought the response that just came from the hymn she sang."
MLK Jr. - "Hold my bible."
