I've done a few models for a friend on commission. Last thing he paid me to paint I later found out was a model intended as a gift for another of our friends. It was really touching to think he thought my painting was worthy enough to give as a gift.
As a commission painter who paints my friends Minins also I agree, I do feel lucky though that I normally am painting things to add on to there current armies. And a lot of my additions have helped them move the armies when it came to trading and selling. I see it all as good practice lol
I paint for my friends, but only on a commission basis. So I get to play with/against my own paint jobs AND I get to use my hobby to fund my hobby. In the event we go to a small tournament together, I've got extra shots at "best painted" too 😂
My wife agreed to paint some minis for a friend. She burned out on painting minis completely and hasn't painted since. I had to finish those minis for her so we could return them to the friend finished. In general, I don't think it's a good idea for most people to paint for their friends unless they are a Jay-level savant at TCB (taking care of business) or something. I agree with the suggestion of getting together to paint the minis with the person. That tends to work a bit better. And you can show them some techniques and help them find one that works for them.
I've been paid to paint some minis and board game minis for my friends and I'd like to add a few things to remember when painting your friends' minis that I wish someone had told me: 1. Talk with your friend BEFORE you start painting on what they expect and what you can/ want to deliver as well as set a deadline for when the project should be finished. If they don't have a scheme in mind then take something that's easy but will still look cool. Also explain if they are being unreasonable and why. 2. If they aren't a mini painter they might not know the process or how much effort or time painting can take, inform them about the process. I.E. I recently painted Zombicide Undead or Alive and I informed my brother that the zombies would just get bare minimum to look okay on the table with some Speedpaints and explained how painting them traditionally or putting any real effort into them would take way too much time since there are so many of them and would thus cost more, and I showed how the sculpts were quite bad and how it wouldn't really be worth it. 3. It's okay to say "No." If the minis they have don't interest you then it's fine to say no, or to tell them that you will only do table top standard. If YOU don't feel like it then it will be really boring and it might even show through in your end result. 4. Update your friend on any changes you need to do to the agreed scheme. Some things don't work out as planned, some details are just not paintable (looking at you, Zombicide), or you make mistakes you need to work around. Inform them. They might not care but they appreciate it. And if they care and you can't fix it they still appreciate honesty. 5. Don't be afraid to charge them a reasonable sum when painting, it's your time and you probably have your own unpainted plastic, resin, or metal to paint. And don't be afraid to charge a little bit more if they really want a certain color on their project that you don't have. 6. Learn to detach yourself from the minis, they aren't yours and most likely never will be.
I've painted my friends' models, especially when they get into the hobby fresh. I e joy the experience because I might paint something I may never play or ever own. Thanks to this, I get more practice as an artist. ❤
I painted more than 10.000 points of 40k for my best tabletop buddy, over the course of almost a decade. It enabled me to try loads of different techniques that I never would have used on my own armies, without buying even more stuff for myself. This included several huge and/or expensive forgeworld kits that were both a pain and fun to paint. I wasn’t able to continue ever since my first child was born, extra hobby time simply vanished into thin air. The games we played devolved into ever more grey plastic until Contrast hit the scene. He has been painting his own armies for a couple of years now, making great progress. His increasing number of painted armies even got me off my ass to return to painting. Good times!
I'm really lucky I have a friend who's quite my senior in the hobby space. He learnt how to paint back in the bad old days pre-youtube or even forums! So when I couldn't push through those first few boundaries in early 2000's he was there to take a squad of Dire Avengers and get them to the tabletop plus level i washed them to be at. It makes such a HUGE difference having some thing at hand thats physical, that visually shows you how it's done and you can take all the kinesthetic lessons from you need. Because White Dwarfs or Codexs etc just didn't have enough in them to teach you those inbetween steps that matter so much. Now with UA-cam and great show hosts like Jay it's so much more approachable you might not need a hobby hero in your community but I was lucky I had one. 😊
I like your simple highlight over zenithal technique (whatever it might be called) and will definitely be trying that to power through some troopers. Great video, thanks.
Idk if I could paint an entire army for someone else, but I could see doing a Kill Team. I did paint up a Harlequin Voidweaver for my brother-law, which was cool because I don't usually paint or play Eldar. I made sure to keep the scheme simple so he could copy it if he wanted.
Great vid! Once in a while I'll paint a little something for our DM. It's hard to hand over those models once I'm done, but at least I know we'll get to see them on the table. One positive is that if I haven't painted in a while, doing a small project for a friend always puts me back on a hobby streak painting my own stuff.
Absolutely paint our friends' models. It can be a fun break, especially if they collect some stuff that we don't and otherwise wouldn't be interested in getting. Bur think twice before agreeing to painting entire armies unless we don't have any projects of our own to work on.😅
Cobalt keep does make some dope bases. I just wish you could spin the top of the handle with your thumb. My only complaint about cobalt keep. I do love them. Thanks gents!! Fantastic as always!!!
I was in a gaming group once. One of the older guys did nighttime security at a desk painted his miniatures. Several people wanted him to paint there's. Unfortunately they were in the back of his car when it got broken into. Gamers were pissed and the thief probably tossed the "toys".
Great job on those Sisters models. I do like them. While I have some, I am a Space Marine guy. I could use the Sisters as an ally, though. I like their entire line.
I wish Warhammer wasn't such an expensive hobby to get into. Seeing your stuff makes me really interested in it but then I look at the price tag and go "Maybe later" every time.
I just earlier today finished my best friends custodies kill team because they were his first minis so I painted it for him but asked him how he wanted them painted and if he gets more teams like some sisters of silence then maybe I teach him how to paint
I’ve painted death guard for my Father and I really enjoyed it because I have space marines, custodes, knights, tau and guard, most of which are very clean looking models, my favourite thing to do with the death guard is to give them a generous coating of agrax earthshade to really dirty up those models and people say they’re the best painted models they’ve seen. I myself still think I can do better as I notice loads of tiny, unnoticeable mistakes and want to improve them, I get the struggle of painting someone else’s models for them
as someone who paints most of the minis my friends and i play with i relate... also the cherry picking is very interesting, might try it on my mordheim collection
i think the battle sisters could have been done better like the other ones were fine but then looking at the battle sisters something just is off about them
Have done it for a couple for friends and so far i actualiteit prefer it almost over painting my own. I have a tendency to overthink every single part op the mini's. From bases to paint schemes. This is where painting for a friend comes in as an advantage, they choose. I just do my best to realise their vision.
My gaming group has a number of exceptionally talented minis painters, and we do trades with the others who don't (or can't) paint their own minis. Everyone seems to have something to offer in return for painting services, whether it's cash, food, or 3D printing of models. I for one paint models for a guy in my group who books the hotels for our convention attendance every year; he pays for the hotel stay, I paint up a bunch of models for him. 🤔
Painted my buddy's Zombicide Dark Plague box, played a few times then he moved onto regular zombicide. It's like he has no issues playing with unpainted minis. Feelsbadman.
Hmm, my friend has slight cerebral palsy so his hands shake, I paint his models for him when I can and I bought some models for him as a gift and I’m painting them up as well
If a friend asks you to paint their army they most likely don't understand the effort and time that goes into that endeavor . If you have a 40hr weekly job that's a project that will most likely take you half a year + and most of your free time.
lol my dad went to art college so he paints my minis i just tell him the faction color i want example space marines blood angels and then just let him decide what he wants to do i usually build them and he paints
Never do anything involving your friends if there is time/expectation/money involved. It's one thing if you paint them something as a gift, at your own leisure - or if you speed paint models like a crazy bastard and they ask you to knock out five models (which you can do in a sitting). But general rule of thumb...don't. I'd be fine selling painted models to friends at a fair price, etc. But all you're going to normally do is spend too much time (while making little to no money) painting up minis.
my friend is currently painting my 6 centurion devestators as my birthday present since he is a far better painter than i am and know he would do a far better job at painting my favourite models
There are no dangers in painting my friends miniatures, they are always happy if I do it for them for various reasons, but lets see what the video has to say about that....
Day 20 of asking for a Centurion Squad magnetization and green stuff conversion video. Once the video is made, I’ll become a top tier Patreon to get my name on the sergeant of the squad.
i painted hundreds of 40k for 2 ''friends''...they messed me around/blamed me etc...they dont have those armies in their own collections anymore....mmm interesting.
SOB don't have a black carapace but somehow got the conection ports protruding from the skin like an astarte. The old repentia models didn't had any of that shit. Serious misstep from GW IMO.
A special thanks to Cobalt Keep for helping us continue to create great videos! www.cobaltkeep.com/ Coupon Code: EOB10 for 10% off Bases!!!

The best counter to the attachment is having your friend painting a squad for you so you know you'll still get some nice minis.
My wife agreed to paint some minis for a friend. She burned out on painting minis completely and hasn't painted since. I had to finish those minis for her so we could return them to the friend finished.

I find sisters are under represented in painting videos, thank you for showcasing nuns with guns! ❤
2:32 that Eldar Army looks amazing! 🤯
"Cherrypickin'" 😍
The finished warband is pretty dang sweet.

"Unless it's 40K, Then it changes all the time." Best quote ever.
A very annoying truth
omg the hair brought them to life!

I really enjoy finding this channel. A lot of the tips are great for average hobbyists.
Best Warhammer painting you tuber ever!
"100 layers of paint and you'll be fine" someone hasn't seen midwinter mini's 100 layers challenge 😳
I like your simple highlight over zenithal technique (whatever it might be called) and will definitely be trying that to power through some troopers. Great video, thanks.
EOB makes some of the highest quality, fun and consistent content and I love and appreciate every video 🙌

5:44 Jay never walks places, because he's the master of segues.

I commissioned my friend to paint my Forgeworld Kriegers, I'm much newer to 40K than he is and wanted them to look great considering their cost.
nice recipe on the hair and very timely, thanks!
I was in a gaming group once. One of the older guys did nighttime security at a desk painted his miniatures. Several people wanted him to paint there's. Unfortunately they were in the back of his car when it got broken into. Gamers were pissed and the thief probably tossed the "toys".
It’s my birthday today and I just woke up to a great EOB video
Where was that hair painting tip at the beginning of my painting career?? Keeping that one in my back pocket.
So he said that a prime over is usually fine unless it’s really caked up, can anybody else second this for me please?
It's typically okay, you just need to be sure that the new coat of primer isnt thick
I’ve done commissions for my friends Star Wars legion army. He paid me handsomely in booze, which wasn’t the worst trade 😂
Great job on those Sisters models. I do like them. While I have some, I am a Space Marine guy. I could use the Sisters as an ally, though. I like their entire line.
Oh man, you have to do a video on those Eldar grav tanks! That neon purple is amazing!
I couldnt do it. I get too attached to something when i paint it and cant give it up... it becomes my precious
Those are the most model hair i’ve ever seen! 😂 haha very well done! I’ll definitively have to try everything here myself
Your content always goes really good with my morning cup of coffee!! Thanks for your hard work.
I wish Warhammer wasn't such an expensive hobby to get into. Seeing your stuff makes me really interested in it but then I look at the price tag and go "Maybe later" every time.

Hi can I ask where you got that useful colour wheel?
That colour wheel is dope! Where can you get something like that?
Great video keep up the good work all your videos are great and inspire me to keep on painting
as someone who paints most of the minis my friends and i play with i relate... also the cherry picking is very interesting, might try it on my mordheim collection
Jay, could you go over your sponging technique? Always looks solid even when you're doing armor chips or highlights. Tell us your secrets!
i think the battle sisters could have been done better like the other ones were fine but then looking at the battle sisters something just is off about them
Brilliantly done as always dude!
It's bold of you to assume I have friends, let alone, ones that play!
This channel is great and I love it.
Have done it for a couple for friends and so far i actualiteit prefer it almost over painting my own.
I have a tendency to overthink every single part op the mini's. From bases to paint schemes.

I think I may have seen a tear in Jay’s eye as he was talking about the minis not being his.
Got one of those Jucoci miniature cases and it’s dope. I got the wood grain one
I forgot to use your affiliate link tho. Please don’t hate me.
I can dry brush, stipple, im ok at highlighting. However I need to learn how to glaze and wetblend better lol.
That hair 😍 amazing job!
Always a great time watching these
I play Sisters of Battle and yours (I mean your friend's) are fantastic!
Yoopi a New vidéo !! And a painting one !! Love it !!❤
I'd actually really like to see u try this technique with space marine armour.

I wish I was even half as good. Three years in and mine are….fine…. But I never get the highlighting or faces the way I want it.
Hmm, my friend has slight cerebral palsy so his hands shake, I paint his models for him when I can and I bought some models for him as a gift and I’m painting them up as well
I literally just finished my first Battle Sisters yesterday! It was this same box! What are the odds
Sweet vid, gonna use that whip for my Dua malifaux crew
What is the name of the color wheel thing that he used?
I paint my friend’s models all the time. They’re the best looking boxes sitting in my pile of shame
My friend have a mountain of shame so i'l gladly help him out. It's Orks so its pure fun!!
I'm a commission assemblyman and painter, I help people reduce their piles of shame.
Nailed the hair 🏆
You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.
Well, I think if anybody is going to get into 40k in a big way, it'd be if a person had 2 units painted by Jay!
I am one of those who hates painting for other people and really dislike seeing stuff I painted in other peoples hands.
What happened to the eyes? I didn't see eyes, do these minis have eyes?
Ecclesiarchy is probably one of the worst kill teams i have played and i love sisters. I will proxy many sisters for the inquisition squad though
I feel this, but I chose to do a 3k army for my dad....
I paint my friend’s models but they pay me as they know I give a better price. And that I can relatively fast always ready for game day
If a friend asks you to paint their army they most likely don't understand the effort and time that goes into that endeavor . If you have a 40hr weekly job that's a project that will most likely take you half a year + and most of your free time.
lol my dad went to art college so he paints my minis i just tell him the faction color i want example space marines blood angels and then just let him decide what he wants to do i usually build them and he paints
You should ease them into it She Built it She might like it Want some more if she wants some more

I no longer paint for friends, as it doesn't feel like it's appreciated and my work is undervalued.
What's going on you guys? Wheres the new video?
It's up now!
Great video. Don't wanna stir up anything, but who in their right mind thinks SoB have shitty faces? They look pretty great to me 😅
Totally not me whos had my buddys Necrons for two years... hah... totally...
my friend is currently painting my 6 centurion devestators as my birthday present since he is a far better painter than i am and know he would do a far better job at painting my favourite models
the Not-Female Space Marines are "the best models gw has ever made" ?
I see my boy Eons also has a bdsm nuns kink lol
Is that DnB I hear in the background?
ha! jokes on you I have no friends
adepta sororitas best army
There are no dangers in painting my friends miniatures, they are always happy if I do it for them for various reasons, but lets see what the video has to say about that....
so sad cobolt keep is a us company :c nearly £20 on shipping
it's simple really
I like painting and my friend doesn't. I get to practice painting a different army and he gets some dudes painted for free :)
Day 20 of asking for a Centurion Squad magnetization and green stuff conversion video.
Once the video is made, I’ll become a top tier Patreon to get my name on the sergeant of the squad.
Show us nick
Nothing draws the emperors eyes quite like sororitas thighs
i painted hundreds of 40k for 2 ''friends''...they messed me around/blamed me etc...they dont have those armies in their own collections anymore....mmm interesting.
SOB don't have a black carapace but somehow got the conection ports protruding from the skin like an astarte.
The old repentia models didn't had any of that shit.
Serious misstep from GW IMO.
I hate painting
you should have stripped them bro... ngl
I'm really sorry, don't mean to be a hater.. But these look Terrible..
Give the sisters differently coloured capes
Ultra sisters, why do people think blue is black? HARD PASS on the Ultra sisters
