Great paintjob, Duncan! Going forward, it would be nice to see some 360° turntable shots at the end, just so we can see all the details :)
It's something we definitely looking at.
Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy It would also be good to rotate the model after relevant steps, depending on where you’ve been painting. If we’re following along we can’t see what the back looks like when we’ve finished a step!
Just like your own one? :D
Was a great investment tho!
@Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy pin midwinter minis comment to the top
Constructive criticism at its finest
Being able to comment is amazing. Can't wait for the discussions and tip sharing
ferre libbrecht and Chaos praising 👿😈
Actually feels kinda weird, when you aren't used to it with Duncan in the videos.
I wouldn't be so fast to praise for being able to comment. Lots of trolls on the internet.
My head almost explode when he said "army painter". Good to see him using other brands!
I know! Couldn’t help grinning at that bit 😁
Petrovic I feel like he always did but of course he could never say he did.
if he says Vallejo i lose it
Can’t wait until he busts out an Iwata!
This is amazing cant wait for the website to be up so i can sub this deserves support
Dinner plate for a palette, because he's serving up some good tutorials.
That and it's ceramic so doesn't absorb moisture, keeping the paint workable for longer...Jus' sayin'~
@Grant Wilson I recommend making yourself a wet palette. Not only will that solve your problem but the leftover paint can be used again the next day. Look up Darren Latham's channel on how to make one, before he deletes his videos on the 18th of may (games workshop is forcing him to terminate his channel)
The citadel pallet dries out the paint, it's so infuriating.
@@zamnodorszk7898 indeed, making yourself a wet palette is a MUST
@@cartouchator absolutely. Made myself one a couple months ago and never looked back. I was using the citadel "pallet pad" for a while and completely didn't realise it was drying my paints out to make me use more. Was very angry.

Duncan videos are the ASMR of mini-painting.
You should check out Girl Painting. Her voice is accidental ASMR heaven.
Sword and Steele too
Darren Latham too.
Mezgike is even better ;)

Duncan, Roger, I don’t think there is anything better to say than: THANK YOU.
I cannot wait to see where this glorious channel goes!! 😄
Thanks Greg. And from the both of us, thanks so much for your support.
Will those shirts be for sale
next you need to paint a badmoonz ork, because nothing says 40k like more dakka
We are currently looking into that Asge.
This channel feels like it should be called "Duncan Unchained" since you're using whatever paints, brushes or miniatures you want! ;) Also, have you ever considered using a wet palette?
It's a good set up in all honesty. I mean, how many people has WHTV influenced with their tutorials, atleast now Duncan has the freedom to do as he pleases.
And now he doesn't have to pretend the half plastic brushes of GW are worth anything
@@intermediatetranslucency tbh there are thousands of channels that show how to paint at the top tier level only duncan does it in a way for a beginner
@@vivianfoxtail5425 i do have to agree on that.
and tbh, i have rarely seen anyone duplicate 100% gw scheme, so props on that.
duncan is clear and show you the step by step.
now that he is on his own i feel like we will get a bit more unbiased content from him :)
and like you said, there are TONS on channel ou there that show you how to paint using different techniques.
can't wait to see him paint other miniatures range
How much for a T-shirt
Me: No arrival will ever top the Rohirrim at Pellenor Fields.
Duncan: Hold my beer.
We both cried reading that! 😂
lol I want to see him paint Rohirrim now
First tutorial is sisters of battle, really you guys know how to start this channel
Seemed like the perfect choice and we love the miniature and the range so it was a no brainer for us.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I must be a little out of the loop, who is "we" and "us"? I'm enjoying your first video, but my suggestion would be to not be afraid to diverge further from the warhammer tv format!
@@ChazCharlie1 At the very beginning of the video he mentions the guy behind the camera is his friend Roger (you catch a blurred view of his thumb). The two of them are doing this together. :)

i love how the king returns with aragorn's sword on the wall behind him
This and Darren’s Masterclass are what’s keeping alive right now.
And Darren's Masterclass is finishing up...
Enjoy Latham while you can... him having to shut down his channel is a damn crime to the hobby.
@@TrippyTheShroom the videos have been saved and will be put up on a new channel for all to enjoy, With Darrens blessings
@@PointyPaints I did not know this! I'll have to check it out
RIP Darren's Channel. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Duncan left to make his own channel right as Darren chose to shut his down with no explanation.
It's great to see you again Duncan! Is it possible to get a list of paints needed at the beginning of the video or in the description? It makes it easier to follow along without having to scan the entire video before diving in. :)
Can support this notion. I think this every time I see a painting tutorial, but many creators don't do this unfortunately.
Agreed. Having a list of paints is great, and allows us to gather what is needed, or it gives a shopping list for us to get before we start.
They are in the description my friend
@@mannfredvoncarstein4410 Yep, they are now! They weren't earlier.
never expected this in the same day as the intro!
We aim to please 😊
Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy “we” implies you’ve got some other folk behind the scenes. Do tell!
@@NomisSanguine It's Our Spiritual Liege, and his camera buddy from GeeDubs.
Duncan, you have such a soothing tone that makes me think “Yes, I can paint like that too!” Great to see you unfurled and free, I hope this venture succeeds for you and us! Subscribed!
I always thought Duncan’s painting standards were way higher than the rest of the GW staff. So glad to see these tutorials from the master!
The comment section is free my brothers; we heard mention of Army Painter and possibly other ranges of paints to come and we finally got a complete painting tutorial with layering and edge highlighting! Gone are the days of "classic battle ready" painting guides! Gone are the days of the strict scrutiny of the Imperium and the prosecution by the Inquisition! Let Chaos reign supreme, Death to the False Emperor!

@CemtecUk no it really means "what?!" like in “What the F)
I don't even own a single mini. I'm just here for duncan.
A little recomend: The lightning in the scenes that you speak seems better than the scenes that you paint the model. Maybe you should tune the lightning in the closer scenes.
Great to see you back Duncan. Really helped in my painting.
I'm just glad to have Duncan back, I don't even play 40k anymore!
Glad to see you back sir. A wee turn table for the final shot of the finished mini would be a great addition.
I've wanted a sisters of batlle painting tutorial forever! Thanks.
Our pleasure Carson. Hope you find it useful.
Great video! Would it be possible to show a paint list at the start of the video, or in the description?
Thanks for the feed back. We'll look into that asap.
This is an EXCELLENT idea. Potentially showing options from other makers. Citadel, P3, Vallejo, etc.
Thanks for coming back Duncan ^_^
Our lord is finally back! Glad to see Duncan doing what he wants without GW restrictions.
Woohoo so happy to be watching Duncan paint again, and in 1080 this time!
Absolutely love it!
Lovely to see you again painting with us Duncan
100% signing up to the website, so happy to finally see our messiah unchained
THE SAINT HAS RETURNED! REJOICE!!!
Oh you have no idea how good it is to see a full detail painting video from you again Duncan, welcome back!
Hearing you suggest an army painter undercoat felt deeply wrong, it's going to take me some time to get used to this lol
😂
I know right? It was weird lol.
Awesome to see you back!!! GW painting tutorials just aren't the same, hope this channel takes off
Finally, now I can say thanks to Duncan for his tutorials!
This is brilliant, is like watching the upgraded secret club version of GW's How to Paint videos
"Now, let's take it up a notch, I have some ScaleColor paints here, pick your Winsor & Newton Series 7 000 and get ready for some details."
The return of the king! In fact Duncan got me into serious miniature painting, so thankful for that, and so glad to see him back!
Awesome to have you back Duncan! Would you be interested in doing a series on the basic techniques in general, rather than on a specific model? Say, a video on your logic on base coating, another on layering, and so on? Perhaps also something on color theory?
Thanks for doing these. I wish you the best of luck!
A day late, but its good to see the king back in action. Ive looked up to you for years, so glad that when you left GW it wasnt the end of your painting tutorials.
I hadn't realised how much I missed Duncan's tutorials until I heard thos today. I wish you both all the best in this endeavor.
This is incredible! Congrats Duncan and Roger on your new venture, can’t wait to see you painting the non GW stuff
I just found this channel...the only thing that stopped me from getting up and slapping the bowl of soup out of my room mates hands to let him know was Duncans smooth mellow tones singing me back to my chair.
I love getting to watch Duncan paint and then actually comment on the video! Great job as always!
I like the look of the channel. Can't wait to see what's next!
So good to see you painting again Duncan! Welcome back!
Yay! Duncan is back!,
This channel is really great news, especially after learning gw is forcing Darren to close his. Welcome back Duncan.
YES! SO GLAD YOU'VE DONE THIS!
Great to have you back in the spotlight, Duncan! Really like these longer form explanations. Good choice to start with Sororitas ;)
Watching it just to hear the magic words again : 'two thin coats' ...
And a martyr as the first mini ?
You're not trying to say something, right ?
Awesome to see you back Duncan!
This! This makes me so happy!
friendship ended with warhammer TV
Now Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy is my best friend
My god, I can comment on Duncan's videos! The joy! :D
Glad to see you painting again. You are a gift to the community.
It feels so good to have you back
All hail the Lord of Layers! Praise be!
Can't help to notice the "Keeper of Secrets" in the background, I sincerely hope that there will finally be a duncan(tm) style tutorial for the last of the greater daemons!
Kept mine unpainted for a year knowing it would have bothered me to no end if one came and i got the palette wrong :D
So happy to see you back Duncan! Woooo! This is awesome!
Glad you’re back again.
Duncan: mentions a non Citadel paint Me: wait that’s illegal
Fantastic job, thanks a lot, would be great if you can show one time the whole process, possibly with a simpler minis so we can understand how to manage the colors, potential mistakes etc
Thanks again!
So happy to see you painting again so happy
So glad you're back and independent Duncan! Your videos were why I got back into the hobby after a decade long hiatus.
ANALYSIS:
Comparison to GW videos:
- 0:09 Citadel miniature = uses Citadel paints.
- 0:10 Lord Duncan now has multiple camera angles for his intro speech. Dramatic lighting, good speech.
- 0:33 New title animation, music and a cool finished model shot+title card.
- 0:47 The painting style is like the GW style videos: Undercoat, basecoat, shade etc.
- 0:53 Obviously, a change of background. Lighting is good. Watermark in bottom left, logo t-shirt.
- 1:00 He mentions The Army Painter alternatives for Citadel products. Paint is listed with a graphic.
- 1:28 Palette is now not Citadel, but just a ceramic plate (no wet palette either). Palette cam is now in a zenithal position.
- 2:00 Transitions and sounds like GW videos.
- 2:24 The Army Painter brush alternative mentioned.
- 2:38 Twist brush classic Duncan tip.
- 3:09 GREEN transition (colour from watermark+logo)
- 3:53 BLUE transition (colour from watermark+logo)
- 4:43 TWO THIN COATS
- 4:47 ORANGE transition (colour from watermark+logo)
- 5:19 Citadel brush mention.
- 5:42 You can paint wash straight from the pot, not necessarily apply it to the palette.
- 6:30 Still have to wait an hour for a wash to dry.
- 8:06 Two thin coats
- 9:06 Same style example as GW videos: Introduce areas to be painted+paints used.
- 15:00 Edge highlighting.
- 15:39 Flipped model.
- 20:34 Mentions transfers and basing, does not show process.
- 20:42 Music and a transition from unpainted to painted miniature. (Before/after shots)
- 20:56 Outro is now speech, standing, multiple camera angles (mirrored from the intro speech)
- 21:09 No longer are the bullet points for key learnings listed, but Duncan talks about key topics.
- 21:27 Website link, copyright.
- Camera quality, speech content and sound quality are all good as with the GW videos.
- Editing is very similar to the old GW videos.
- The UA-cam description box has an intro written in third person singular (he) about Duncan, maintaining a professional distance to the viewer - yet, it switches to first person plural (our, us) later and adresses the viewer directly (you), implying a more personal tone. The links in the description are for the personal social media accounts of Duncan. Listed also are all the paints used.
- UA-cam comments are open, and Duncan (and his collaborator, Roger) now reply to comments from viewers in first person plural (we). They adress the viewer directly in second person singular/plural in the comments, implying a personal tone of voice. Sometimes, even names are mentioned when adressing commenters. They now take feedback and suggestions from commenters. Smileys are used by @Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy.
um...wow...it's like you're in our heads....😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Had to see what this new stuff was all about ;) Lots of things happening in the mini painting UA-cam world atm. Your friend Darren Latham, fx, is for some reason (probably corporate decisions) ceasing and deleting his channel.. So I'm just keeping a keen eye on things
Quite a miniature to start with!
Welcome back Duncan! I've missed your tutorials!
Hay, Dumcan's back.
Man, I've been missing your painting tutorials.
So glad to see you're here.
I would have bet that the first video was a GW product, but hey, who am I to judge the Paint God?
PS: I want one of those t-shirt
I've never clicked on a video so fast! Glad to see you branching out doing your own thing! Maybe You'll paint some stuff on squares in the future? ;)
great to see you back !
Holy Terra! the channels first tutorial, there goes the plan of slacking off from painting 😁
Duncan,
1) I would like to acquire a DRPA shirt, make those available- please.
2) The sound seems a bit 'distant' on the first painting video. Maybe up the input on your mic for future vids?
3) Happy to support you, I learned a lot from your videos in the past- excited to learn more from you in the future!
Finally, Duncan in a video longer than 5 minutes!! Mentioning other brands!
Maybe using a wet pallete, or that is asking too much? :D
TWO THIN COATS! Welcome back Duncan, I love your tutorials, glad to see you are still making them.
Gorgeous! Can't wait to see more
Glad to see you back Duncan! Will you be doing simple speed painting guides? I'm a pretty lazy painter tbh so any tricks I can use is always a good thing :)
Idk if it's ok with Duncan but check out midwinter minis channel for quick paint ideas
So it begins...
So glad to have you back, Duncan!
It’s wonderful to see you back 👍
It's great to have you back Duncan, just in time after Darren leaving UA-cam.
Will you open to take on recommendations at all in the future?
Never clicked so fast on a video
Oh how we have missed you Duncan, it’s good to see you back at it
Thank you Duncan! It feels so good to learn from you again.
Im just glad we have a comment section. Warhammer Tv disabling comments is such bull
Help! I can't follow this tutorial because I dislocated my finger from clicking too fast.
So glad to see him back at it. Love this dude!
Great to see you back mate, loving the setup and the advice you give is perfect. Keep up the great work
When are these shirts going up for sale tho
Do you usually like to leave out painting the eyes on a mini like this? I can never decide whether it actually looks "natural" or not. Lens on a helmet are one thing, but eyes are a lot more subtle.
Glad to have you back creating content. Can't wait to see what you do.
Feels so good to have Duncan guiding you how to paint from start to finish! ❤️ to the Master of all painters.
Oh my God we can actually comment
The lighting on the model appears to be too dark (IMO). It’s difficult to see where some paint starts and stops
I agree although this being the first video I imagine itll only get better as they do more and grow. 🙌 #havefaith
came here to comment exactly that. more light on the mini, please.
Agree, otherwise job’s a good’un!
Same.
Yes Finally Duncan is back!! 🎉🎉🎉
Amazing. Thank you so much. So glad to see you back.
