No, you did not waste the gesso to seal it. Leaving a raw edge/side will cause uneven moisture absorption and possibly split the wood in the future. This is the general rule in woodworking to seal all sides with the same finish, so it was smart for you to invest the time and material.

Defo agree that the sides are important as that's where the wood meets the painting and also the edges are always super porous but I'm not so sure about the back of it being coated...hmmmm, You reckon it's just as necessary?
      or maybe less so?

    • @fr0nk3nst31n
      @fr0nk3nst31n 2 роки тому +11

it makes sense but this should have been done before screwing the wood together; moisture will still get into the uncoated wood. But let's be honest most art lives in temperature controlled places these days so the effects will likely never be noticed unless it gets caught in a flood or left in damp room.

I think some invisible ink/paint - transparent but UV activated would be cool. Some small final detail, unnoticeable unless put under a blacklight. With all the mystery and clues of this painting, etc, this would be a cool little detail to add in.

I’m a trained scenic artist so priming and prepping is right up my street. You absolutely didn’t waste time or gesso priming the back of your panel. Any moisture in the air or in the wall it’s hanging on can impact the integrity of the piece over time, wood in particular is important to do this with. It has a mind of its own. Loving the series so far!! Can’t wait to see more!

      @bethrientoul2471 2 роки тому +2

@@KarlMarkusAntson anything wood I would recommend it yeah, it might not make it perfect forever but I’m sure it would prolong water damage. With fabric, it’s sometimes a good idea to prime the back too, again it’s a safety net but it’s not as big of a deal as a wooden panel warping, fabric can withstand a lot more

I don't know if it was this vid, the coffee, the other videos about random art i was watching this morning... but my heart was actually racing and i was inspired to pic something up to draw. automatic drawing to one extent or another has always been more enjoyable to me, with a mixture of this kind of tagging style, or maybe even a Basquiat (JMB)... scribble your heart out style.
I actually became afraid of stopping, or thinking too much about anything that was forming.
I don't think i have actually cared or been that scared or pondering about art, or where it was going in years. I felt that in the least i was making something interesting enough to at least be an interesting basis for adding some interesting detail later.
usually i cannot wait and my a.d.d. just takes me into the first bit of detail that catches my fancy.
thanks for the vid, possibly inspiration.
cant wait to see what comes out, thanks for sharing the process with us.

Always seal up all sides of wood so it prevents cupping and warping... the painted side will always be less porous than the raw side so the raw side will absorb more water, ergo the warping and cupping.

💯% right to gesso the back. Even in a temperature controlled environment, the moisture from the gesso itself can warp the panel when it dries if only paint one side. 👍 Over time, will defo warp if don't double side it with gesso. In the past, I've used PVA to seal the whole panel but MUST be waterproof one, otherwise goes moldy over time 😧

You don’t have to necessarily gesso the back. Pva size does the job and is transparent. Normally, it’s 2 layers of pva size in the front, sides, and back for a complete seal. Then gesso front and sides. Gesso does seal, but chemicals in the would will cause discoloration still.

    Message at 9:17:
    Editor's Log:
Hi everyone. Nick here again. Thanks for all the love and support in the comments of the last video. The first week wasn't too rough. I've helped with 2 videos. I'm burrowing in and learning fast. I worked hard on a couple things that ended up on the cutting room floor, but I am thick skinned.
But, things have been getting a little weird. I poked my head into a storage closet in the studio looking for an extra HDMI cable or something. In the closet was a stack of small paintings I had never seen before. I started looking through the pieces & they contained strange distorted images of animal heads. I started to feel a little dizzy and see orange flashes of light across my vision. I'm not sure if I passed out or what. I remember having visions of deep earthy tunnels & I felt like I was falling for a long time until finally landing in shallow muddy waters. Next thing I knew I was back home. I don't remember driving home, entering my security code, or getting into bed.
I'm not going in that closet anymore.
    -Nick

I LOVE hunting for clues or secrets. Mysteries are everything to me. I just don't have the brain space for it right now XD but I LOVE this series and am finally going to join redit just for this.

I love the potato comment! It reminds me of back when I was teaching 4th/5th grade students and my assistants and I were joking that the kids couldn't hear us on the playground but they would smile and wave no matter what we said. So my assistant Drew waves and yells, "Potato!" and the kids smiled and waved back causing us to crack up laughing. That was our potato joke for the rest of the school year.

I cant speak for Jesso or art specifically as I am not an artist, but that is definitely the case with other wood sealing, instead more of a woodworker. Example, if you don't seal the bottom of a wooden table, it can cause the table to warp like a potato chip since the sealed side and the unsealed side will cure and react to humidity differently.

    Hi Ten,
    I'm amazed by your work!
I have a little note on the sketch though.
You've written "אל" on the middle of the map.
though that means a god (more like in a polytheistic way)
That should probably say "אלוהים", which is more suitable for the Christian definition of God

I'm not even kidding. I spent like 2 hrs searching for clues and researching and thought I was getting somewhere...Until I saw other even smarter people on reddit were deciphering codes and data whatevers that's when I realized...I'm not that smart...and I'm never going to figure any of this out..SO! Good luck to all the smarty pants peeps out there, God's Speed, you deserve to win the super awesome painting. Ya girl over here ain't the one. XD

You probably already noticed but every time he touched his ear, the screen glitches.
Idk what its about, I'm not a diving into this but yeah; wanna make sure someone knew what I saw.
Also there was 1 frame story of editor Nick while Peter talked about gessoing the back of the piece.
      Goodluck!

@@hendricklamar5061 I played MYST when it first came out in the early 90's and they had some glitchy screen images. Probably not related, I've just been watching some replays so it's on my mind

A clue for all of you out there trying to figure this out, I'm sure you've already seen this. But I noticed it and I'm not playing so I figured I'd put it down here for anyone who needs it. The clock on the montages where he is doing the sketch and it is fast forwarded are stuck in time. Everything else is moving in fast pace but the clock isn't moving at all. Not even the second hand.

So is gesso basically kilz? More or less expensive? It sure sounds and acts like kilz.
