This was the first doom/death metal album ever. I remember listening PL for months. No internet, no mobile phones, no nothing. Just plain old cassete tape!!!

Early Paradise Lost sure was something else, i love the atmosphere in this album
This is a goddamn masterpiece.But i believe with Gothic they surpassed this.Excellent times back then.We would gather in record stores every weekend and check whatever new release came out during the last week.Back then Metal music experienced a blossom like never before.European death metal had Pestilence,Morgoth,Bolt Thrower,Asphyx..Florida again excellent death metal..Scandinavians started producing excellent doom death and black metal..Uk these guys and My dying bride..An endless flow of fresh things coming out of everywhere.Even in my country Greece some of the bands did great things, like Rotting Christ,Nightfall and Septic Flesh.And no i am not one of these idiots who say "ah back in the time everything was better".Metal always produces fantastic bands.I listen to old and new stuff together.

While you're on the subject of Nick's voice, I will say this. He's an awesome vocalist/artist that can evoke all sorts of feelings, no matter what style he's singing in.
I saw them play at a pub in London in the early days and was there for his vocal sound check. He did a growl that came from his soul and diaphragm of course, that was long and intense and literally made me weep. That was real. ✌

All the PL's albums are materpieces. I fell in love with Paradise Lost two years ago and now I couldn't imagine my day without their music. It helps me to reset myself and keeps me away from the hellish circle of depression and autoaggression. One more time - thanks a lot for the absolute magnificent music and lyrics.

What more can we say about PL, they invented a genre in music. Pioneers.
Paradise lost did not invent the death/doom genre in 1990 with their first album. But Sempiternal deathreign is the wery first death/doom band with the spooky gloom from 1989. Celtic frost was also early out with the death/doom genre. But Paradise lost was the first band to mix death/doom with gothic rock creating the goth metal genre.

back in 1991 i worked in the motor trade , i had to pick a car up from ripponden , i had long hair at the time and the woman i picked asked me what music i liked ,she told me about her son that was in a band think Aedy was the name . i went home and then saturday went to the record store and bought lost paradise .

had this on picture disk l.p. I also had a video tape with a full live show. I thought this was great, but was completely blown away when paradise lost released the "gothic" album.
You just need to see the album's cover to instantly feel this is a badass album.

Ren Zenith Yeah, man. Paradise Lost were some of the darkest and most wretched doom/death masters ever in the beginning! I love all their stuff, myself. It's too trendy nowadays to only support one era of a band, so I make a point to have an open mind about change. But as for him in Bloodbath...I'm sure he's been working on some surprises for us all that even these albums don't have. He's gotten older, had more time to work with his voice, and the band accepted him. That all speaks volumes.
***** Yes, and a new song has been released called "Unite In Pain". He sounds like himself. Midrange growl with up and down dynamic, very old-school death metal. So many idiots wishing he'd be a hoover-duster vocalist are acting like he sucks at it. But I see through their negativity, and love the new song! Check it out. It's all over the metal webzines.
PriestofGethsemane I am an bloodbath fan, I never heard Paradise lost before so right now I am listening to this album. This is sick, but on the new song of Bloodbath Unite in Pain you can see that his dynamics for faster rythms are not well controlled and I am a bit dissapointed. But on slow rythms like on 1:29 to 1:56 on Unite in Pain you get bone chills on how the sound is cold and fucking evil. But still thats only 1 song. Waiting the rest of the album to give my full opinion.
MrGuitarTormentor Well, I'm used to this by now (regarding Holmes in Bloodbath). However, most aren't being as mature as you about it. Anyway, they (and he) wrote the vocals for his voice, and I hear no folly. I am a 34 year old vocalist that has been singing since I was a kid. I have had a car wreck, damaging my neck, taking my voice, and then relearning and then eventually coaching vocalists. What I hear is an old-school midrange snarler helping them get back (or even go further) into a really old-school, if not *revivalist* sound. He does sound a bit "pained", but I also observe that he threw in a usual Bloodbath low to prove himself, and as I stated; for the dynamics of the song. Personally, I never really had a huge love for Mikael's ultra technique-fueled, smoothe-flowing low growls in the music of Bloodbath (as I always preferred Tagtgren, myself). I think they made a fine choice for a "middle-of-the-roader"-type frontman. However, even if I am using my years of knowledge, it is still only my opinion. Hails, fellow metal fanatic. \m/

One of the greatest albums. Whilst I'm a massive fan of Icon and Draconian, PL's debut album had the biggest influence on me personally and musically, when I first heard it as a kid it took me to an alternate dimension, something oddly mystical and even psychedelic about it despite being death-doom metal.

nick is going to be good for bloodbath i think. it's 2014 not 1990, the production will most likely be killer so the vocals will be much more crisp-sounding, in bloodbath tradition
