    Hi Dr. Mistry, I'm currently in treatment for Disc Displacement with Reduction - - about 3.5 months. When I initially saw my TMJ specialist, I could open to 28mm. I can now open to 35 - 37mm which my specialist told me was normal. This 2 + fingers...not 3. I actually mentioned the 3 finger rule which he said was never going to happen. He had given me an acrylic angled device to stretch recently which helped me get from 33 up to 37mm in 3 weeks. He has told me to stop since I reached 37mm. I'm grateful for the treatment I am getting, but I'm beginning to question things based on this video and many others. My disc is still very much displaced, with a low pop and I'm continuing treatment but concerned I'm in the right hands. I realize this is a very complex issue to treat with limited, knowledgeable professionals, but would you know of anyone reputable in the NY or CT area ? Thank you so much.

    Good info! What would you recommend for someone who is hypermobile? I can open my jaw about 65mm or so and it does seem to cause me problems.

    I have tmj problems. I had an abscess tooth that caused swelling in my cheek. A week after my root canal I noticed I couldn’t open my jaw as wide. I’m at about 27 mm. I don’t have pain except occasionally when I open a certain way and it seems like muscle pain. I’m not sure what to do.

      Sorry to hear that! Have you seen a TMJ dentist or TMJ physical therapist? That's likely a good first step.

    Why do TMJ measurements have so many different names? Passive, active, assisted, unassisted, maximal incisal opening. I have an ENT doctor's report that I have to compare with VA disability verbiage. The VA uses the term "unassisted vertical opening" for determination and the doctor's report lists: passive opening: 27 mm, and maximal incisal opening: 42 mm. I looked up the term "passive" and it doesn't appear to be the "unassisted vertical opening" measurement I need to compare with VA terminology. From my investigation, it appears the measurements were flip-flopped. The ENT's nurse says the "passive opening" measurement is the same as "unassisted opening." I'm very confused. Would you be able to tell me if this is correct?

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  Рік тому

      I don’t use all this terminology!

    Do you use EMG or other scans to find the most relaxed position of the jaw? Is it bad if my specialist didn’t and he just made a mold? My splint doesn’t feel even and I had it adjusted and it still doesn’t feel even. Feels like a shot in the dark and my midline is off

    • @theTMJdoc

    Is it normal to have some mild on and off pain around the cheekbone and temple with TMJ? I have clicking/popping in my left jaw but it only clicks when I open it a certain way and I've just formed a habit of making it click forcefully. My issues started when my bottom left wisdom tooth partially erupted (the jaw discomfort also makes left side teeth hurt) So will wisdom tooth removal help?

    I saw a video by Dr Mike Mew or his father who believed that a lot of TMJ issues can be resolved simply by correct tongue posture (roof of mouth) and teeth slightly together (perhaps the back teeth?) Do you agree with him? Cheers.

    Hi Dr. Mistry,
    Do you have any doctor and therapist recommendations in Louisiana? I’m willing to travel to neighboring places like Texas. And may I ask what is the difference between a flat plane splint and an orthotic for the lower teeth that guides the jaw anteriorly? Thank you.

    • @theTMJdoc

      Hi! Please watch my video "dental nightguard vs. tmj orthotic" for the answer to your second question. As for someone in Louisiana, I believe Dr. Darrel Bourg treats TMJD - he is in New Orleans. I don't know him personally or his exact methods. Good luck!

    I just had TMJ surgery on my left joint to put a posteriorly displaced disc back in place using a miteks anchor about three months ago. My range of motion opening isn’t too bad it’s not fully to 45 mm but my side to side motion is basically stuck I can only move 1 mm to the right and 6 mm to the left. I’ve been told to try to practice the side to side motion but I’m wondering if I’m trying to hard or doing too much I don’t wanna mess up the surgery…

    • @annarusso7278

      @@theTMJdoc speaking is limited. I’m on soft chew still, and yawning is awkward. My tongue feels restricted when I’m trying to use to move food around or out of the creases in my mouth that makes my left joint sore. I would say more discomfort & soreness than anything. Occasional termporalis headache and never pain. Surgery was June 28th this year..

    When I move my jaw left to right or forward there is immense pain and crunching noises in both my TMJ. Oddly I can put three fingers in my mouth with mild pain. Is the articular disc damaged? What else can cause this amount of jaw pain? I had my wisdom teeth removed and it did not stop the jaw pain. Is anything I can do on my own to help at all?

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  2 роки тому

      Please watch my video "Jaw Joint Noises - Snap, Crackle, Pop" to better understand your crunching noise - which I describe as a crackle. Jaw pain is typically caused by dysfunctional muscles - please watch my video "Headaches and TMD" (headaches can be substituted for jaw pain). For the pain, we treat with orthotics and myofascial release. You can try some of the muscle releases at home for pain relief - they are all in my UA-cam Playlist called "TMJ exercises/Muscle Releases". Many people have messaged me saying they help.
