Jethro Tull's Passion Play, Minstrel in the Gallery and TAAB are 24 carat Prog albums.

Jethro Tull is absolutely a progressive rock band. (Much more so than some other bands on the list.) The idea that Thick as a Brick was a parody of prog rock excess is pure revisionism; something that Ian Anderson started claiming in later interviews as a way of distancing himself from the prog label.

70s Genesis, best ever prog band. They were able to combine art, talent, melody and great tunes but remain very prog. The Moody Blues did as well but were not as prog as Genesis. One glaring omission is The Alan Parson's Project, a brilliant band.

ELO and moody blues should be in the top 10

*1. Pink Floyd (for Echoes and Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Progressive Rock masterpieces); 2. King Crimson (In the Court of the Crimson King); 3. Genesis. Fixed.*

Jethro Tull was extremely progressive on A Passion Play. I had to learn all the drum parts back in the day...extremely difficult.

Surprising that ELP is not higher as they are the epitome of prog. Yes should be higher.

I support King Crimson going ahead of Yes and Genesis to be #1 because unlike the other two bands, Fripp never let KC enter a period of putting out subpar schlock 😂

Overall , a fine 🙂 list. Love Tangerine 🍊 Dream & their soundtracks to Sorcerer & Risky Business. Can & PFM are unique. Porcupine Tree are the best contemporary prog act. I understand King Crimson nipping Yes & Genesis for the early 80's comeback with Adrian Belew & Tony Levin ( He's looked the same for 40 years ) Been enjoying 80's & 90's Rush retrospectively.

Haken are an English neo-prog band with occasional metal tendencies. Quite complex stuff.
Tull - for me - definitely were prog grom 1972 until about 1980.

I knew TOOL had to be in the top 10. Hell yeah, RUSH at #6! I disagree with the list: I would have put TOOL at #1. 😉😊But seriously, I do understand their ranking and I can't really fault them for their choices.

It's missing, the great French-Canadian band: "Harmonium". Although their first album is folk, their next two (especially their 3rd one, "L'Heptade") are full blown prog.

    1 - Yes
    2 - Genesis
    3 - King Crimson
    4 - Pink Floyd
    5 - Rush
    then the rest.
and where is Dream Theater? Isn't it a famous prog band?

What is “Prog Rock”? I occasionally hear (on College Radio) what is considered to be Prog Rock. Usually played by older (Alumni) DJs. It’s usually Bands from two to five decades ago. Some of it sounds more like Blues Rock with a few more or odd chords thrown in. I’m not familiar with some of the Bands on that list. For me the order is 1) Yes, 2) Genesis & 3) King Crimson. The list is a good reference point for discovering new Bands and their music. Great stuff Larry! Thanks much! 🎻🙂😎

Ok, pretty good list here, I do like Soft Machine, listen to first album and also Third. Camel, check out Mirage and Moonmadness. With Caravan, first 4 albums with Richard Sinclair on bass, also Hatfield North with Richard Sinclair is good. Used to have Ege Bamyasi and Future Days from Can at one time, definitely worth a listening.❤
Thank you I enjoy your videos as well.

One band that I feel gets disrespected in prog circles because I at least consider them a Prog Rock band is Grizzly Bear. I know they were more on the progressive folk spectrum but they had an amazing and unique sound. Listen to songs like Sky Took Hold, Sun in Your Eyes & Ready Able and try to tell me they aren’t prog.

Hi Larry, hope you're doing ok
Well I agree with you for Yes at number 1, then Genesis at 2 and King Crimson at 3 ( all used the same drummer at some point ), Rush I wouldn't say is prog rock or Frank Zappa as they were both more diverse
Anyway great video again, I'm liking these lists for how stupid they are

    King Crimson Number 1. Absolutely.
Remember that they reinvented themselves in '73 and again in the 80's and were still Prog, whereas pretty much all the others went pop, then went 3 drummers.
    The ultimate Prog band

    • @TheCanadianStudmuffin

I have no problem with them being number one, it is just that I am more of a Yes fan overall. My first concert was King Crimson with Golden Earring opening up for them in Toronto in 1974.

More people buy Yes albums than King Crimson album and they probably are the ultimate prog band😊
King Crimson is the pretentious choice (even though I day so myself) . 😃

My selection of prog rock is a bit lame, but I do have a lot of Moody Blues, Frank Zappa and some of the others. I have several really nice Genisis CDs I find them cheap I really want to like them that's why I picked them up but it wouldn't take much for me to part with them. I guess prog is low on my favorites list.

Ian Anderson parodying prog concept albums before prog concept albums became a thing. Thick as a Brick made in 1971, way before all of the big prog concept albums were made. Maybe he had a time machine. Or maybe he is just lying.

  • @DoubleD990
    @DoubleD990 5 місяців тому +1

I have always had trouble identifying what prog actually is. Like you mentioned, I am not sure Jethro Tull is prog. By the way, Thick as a Brick should have been on the list of best album covers in your other video. A band which should get some love here is Spock's Beard (I love that name).
