- It is finally chick season again!! I have seen a lot of interest in "Easter Eggers" and thought I would make this video to answer some of the questions people have been asking me. Watch till the end to see the big surprise on the farm!
You did the same thing by saying pit bulls are aggressive. Maybe do some research before making a video about people saying things they have no clue about.
Oh I’m sorry for being confusing. I was stating “pit bulls are aggressive” pointing out a common stereotype and saying you should do your research and ask questions about each animal you bring home. I am trying to discourage people buying animals as if they are purses and basing their decisions based on size and color. :) I love disproving stereotypes about animals. All bantam chickens are seen as aggressive but I made a whole video about how my sweetest chickens are bantams! I apologize that I flippantly said that pit bulls are aggressive without saying that it is a commonly untrue stereotype of that breed ❤️

My pitbull loves my new chickens had zero problem and she had never seen them before. Hmmmm.
And stereotypically pit bulls are nanny dogs.

We went to Feed store to buy Easter Eggers, we bought Americanas instead because they looked more like what we expected. They are a couple of months old now and they are delightfully cuddly.

This was awesome information. I feel like a just got a great education!! We did have a “Easter Egger” with our last flock. It was part Amaracauna part something else. She was not a great chicken personality wise. Never came back to coop. A runner lol! Eventually flew the coop one day and ran back to lay egg at door… then ran away. She didn’t return the fourth day. High predator area. So something got her. If we had small children, I would have adopted her out. But my daughter was older.

I have 6 chickens and 3 are lavenders and 3 are legbars. They get along very well. Probably the two best breeds to have together.

I often enjoy a good analogy but my dog is at zero risk of being eaten if it gets too old to play fetch.
Sidenote, UA-cam is likely reading more from the suburban areas rater than rural which means their most common option will be a box store like location
Thanks for the feedback:) I am actually gearing this video towards the suburban viewers. Over half the people that buy chickens from me live in Fort Worth or Dallas and their chickens have no chance of being eaten either just like any pet 🥰 A simple google search can lead anyone to a farm near them where they can pick up a carefully raised animal. Where the breeder is choosing quality over quantity. Just depends on what you are looking for :)
Very informative video i fell into this trap last yr i bought 6 "easter egger pullets" as chicks last yr at a local auction i had no clue how they were bred i hatched out the eggs from em this spring and got 47 of the most colorful birds ive ever seen!! Some came out looking like barred rocks and buffs but they all had the cheek muffs im absolutely happy with mine the original birds i got were very nervous and flighty but havent had that problem with the ones i hatched thank you for the information was just doing a little research !! Please do a little research on pit bulls though. We have 2 and both are sweeter bigger babies than our little purebred havanese. Our pit bull girl watches and protects our chicks. She babysits them for us. Our male pit is a Huge baby who is scared of his shadow, lol! Both are so gentle! Such a joy to our family.
I regret flippantly saying anything about pit bulls. I know they can be very sweet 🥰
It sounds like this small breeder is the way to go for Easter Eggers.
I got a batch of four from a bigger box feed store and one ended up being a rooster the others didn’t lay well and were temperamental.
So you can be careless and breed any brown egg laying breed with an Americuana and technically get an Easter Egger.

As a pitbull owner for over 20 years, what you said was ridiculous. " you don't know whether you're going to get a vicious pitbull mix in with a dog that it might n look like... first of all any dog that has pitbull in it you can definitely tell it has pitbull in it... as a rescuer of pitbull type dogs I can tell you right now having been raised around Border Collies and other Farm dogs my Pitbulls with the sweetest out of any dog ever had... and I've rescued week over 25
New to chickens this year, wish I had seen your video first. I have 2 Easter eggers 6 weeks old and they seem friendly enough so far but time will tell lol
It will probably be fine but it is just good to know what you have! For example feed stores often sell “assorted bantams”. That’s like saying I sell small dogs…what kind? …small haha
Whiting True Green are hybrids that lay green and can be breed true.
I have read that Swedish Isbar Chickens are a green egg laying breed. The photos I have seen on line and on UA-cam of Isbar eggs sow them to be a range of green colors. Is this breed incorrect? I'd appreciate your input. Thanks.
You are correct! The Swedish Isbar is the only chicken that naturally lays a lightly green tinted egg! All other green egg layers are a hybrid :)
@@kingcrossfarms4979 There is actually one more breed in Sweden laying green eggs and that is the Silverudds Blå. They are created in the 1950s by Martin Silverudd
Another accurate definition of an "Easter " egger is a non standard Americana. Until recently I would have expected that if I ordered an Easter egger it would have been a non standard Americana. Now if I order a turquoise egg layer I will make sure it i majoritively Americana. There is no substitute.
I didn't go to tractor supply but I did go to local feed store. I'm new to chickens and I don't know how to find a breeder, hopefully I will figure that out with time. The Easter eggers I picked up look exactly like the Welsummers I got, except they have a crest on their head. They're pretty nice, a little skittish but don't mind me handling them. They are nowhere near as sweet as the two lavender orpingtons I got. Those are my girls for sure, they love to sit on my lap and one of them definitely thinks I'm actually her mother lol.

I know the yolk color changes with diet, shell color with breed of chicken. But do different breeds of chickens have different flavor of eggs? (city girl question, I know ... but had to ask)
That is actually a very valid question! And it is commonly assumed that brown eggs are either healthier or tastier. But the breed of the chicken or color of the egg have nothing to do with the flavor or nutritional value. :) I’m a teacher and there are no silly questions!
If I incubate only pink eggs. Will the chicks all lay pink eggs since there is not a way to know what the rooster would be?
There’s really no way to know what egg color the chicks will lay without knowing the rooster breed. Also just as another example the flock featured in this video lay a large range of browns (from the lavender hens) and blues/greens (from the cream legbars). Hope this answers your question!
I clicked on this video for the chickens b/c we are doing research on which ones we will be adding to our small flock of 4.... then funny how i immediately (get side track) fell in LOVE with your adorable dog n puppies(that i am now researching that same exact breed!..again) Also crazy cause I literally just learned of this perfect mix of a pup just about a week ago as i was just viewing dogs/puppies for sale, and now your video! (And u have chickens too... i think its totally a *SIGN* for me n my family! Haha ❤🐕

They are the best dogs!! I kept one 😁🥰 the huge rooster is a lavender Orpington but if you love big and beautiful I am now in love with our silver laced Wyandottes! I have a video or 2 with our rooster or you can check us out on Facebook for even more farm fun 😁

Im lost. Starlight eggers lay green eggs. There is a specific chicken called an easter egger. Are you saying this is not a breed? Ps. Rode Island Reds are a pass. They’re pissy.
I would love some Easter Eggers. I have speckled Sussex right now so I would love a nice mellow chicken to Co exist with them. Can you give me information of were I could purchase some. I live in California.

Very, very informative. Thank you! I have Lav Orp hens, and would like to get a rooster for colored eggs. Is that possible? I think you said you cross a Lav Orp rooster with leg bars hens, and I know just enough about genetics to know a Lav Orp hen and a leg bar rooster might not produce similar results. What breed of rooster would you choose if you had Lav Orp hens? Thank you!
An Easter Egger roosters, cream legbar, or Americanss will give you lots of fun colors when mixed with your lavender hens :)
All Hybrid Breeds are Mutts, Some are just More Cherished than Others. Also, I Would be a bit Skeptical if Anyone Presents Their Chickens as Pure Bred, or Pure Bred Hybrids, Pure Bred birds would be a Rare Thing Indeed.
You are very correct! And hybrids are great and often healthier than the “pure breeds”. What I was saying in this video was “Easter Eggers” don’t even have a set of specific attributes. Also some people use the term EE to mean a chicken that doesn’t lay white eggs…and at point you might as well just call it a chicken 🤷♀️ I just don’t want people to buy them and be disappointed or have specific expectations ☺️

I don't really care what color the eggs are. I am looking for a friendly chicken. I don't have young children. I have a 1/3 acre so there should be plenty of room for 2 to 3 hens.
Pitbulls are not mean at all it's the owner that is you are judging them with out knowing about them and that's the same thing your telling people to not do with the Easter eggers

Why tell us there are some breeds that you wouldn’t combine to make an Easter ether but then Kot tell us what they are so we know what to look out for?
People get very picky when I call out specific breeds as aggressive 🙄

Sigh yeah I should have been more specific and explained that I was trying to make a parallel between specific chicken breeds that have been inhumanly exploited and bred for fighting, like the pitbull breed. It’s horrible but true that some dogs of that breed (to no fault of their own) are mean. Just like it’s not a roosters fault that he has been bred for fighting. But I still wouldn’t want that specific line of roosters bred to an Orpington and then sold to me as an Easter Egger…this was the point I was hoping to make :)

I really like the people that work at ours but the company seems to be a little uninformed and only out to make money. Not really unique qualities for a large corporation though.
You are mistaken about there not being a green egg layer generation after generation. It's the Silverudd's Blue. Available from Greenfire Farm. Do research before you put out false information.
All I was trying to claim in this video is that “Easter egger” is not a breed. Silverudd’s Blue is a beautiful green egg laying breed :)
