    If you pay even closer attention, Moffett isn't sliding his stick across the cymbal. He's hitting the cymbal, and grabbing it cleanly. Moffett is one of the most precise drummers, hands down.

    • @Thedrummersalmanac
      @Thedrummersalmanac  Рік тому

      Yes, pay close attention, how he hits the cymbal and traces the the stick to his fingers to catch it. This is “sliding…” just very quickly. 😉 look closely… this is especially important when you are not looking at the cymbal… it’s literally a feeling thing. Moffett didn’t invent this, but he great at it. Here’s a clearer video.
      ua-cam.com/users/shortstQRmODEDWBo?feature=share

  • @trevorlaporte5951
    @trevorlaporte5951 2 роки тому +1

    The difference is, when he does it... The stick doesn't make contact with the cymbal on the mute and make that rattle. That's really what makes it sound so good.

    • @Thedrummersalmanac
      @Thedrummersalmanac  2 роки тому +1

      You’re also hearing Moffett at full volume, on real cymbals, with a mic’d and produced drum sound… vs my example on low volume cymbals, practice pads with just a single lapel mic. But the technique is the same. Bottom line… If I were to demonstrate this with real cymbals in a studio environment instead of a practice one, you’re not gonna hear that rattle. 😉

    • @Thedrummersalmanac
      @Thedrummersalmanac  2 роки тому

      @NPC 2428 in what way is it making contact a second time? And I’ll say it again, you are equating a low volume practice setup demonstration as being equal to a full volume/professionally miked up and produced drum set up. They won’t sound the same. My little lapel mic in this video will pick up every little extraneous sound, where as a full volume setup will be much more forgiving. Either way… comments like this are being very knit picky and completely missing the point of the lesson. 😉 …but everyone is entitled to their opinion 🤷🏻

    • @Thedrummersalmanac

    Soo cool. I wanted to be a drummer but ended up guitarist. Play bass and a bit of drums. Keys not much. I find some drummers online to be most analytical and judgemental. I respect their knowledge I don't have when they have put decades of ear and limb coordination training into the discipline. I find it hard to find a perfect drum solo. I'm sure its a well balanced mix of techniques, feel and taste. When I have played the drums live I've kept it within what I know I can do to still be able to keep steady time and get back to the one beat on time. Improvising can be fun but tiring. Always thinking, moving...I wonder how I would be I was a drummer instead.

  • @poorlake8107
    @poorlake8107 2 роки тому

    Hey, not a drummer but a guitarist here. From the video I can tell that your explanation seems off. What I see Sugarfoot doing is he hits the cymbals not with the edge of his stick but closer to his hand so he instantly mutes the cymbal.

    • @Thedrummersalmanac
      @Thedrummersalmanac  2 роки тому

      Im exaggerating the motion for this demonstration. Making it slow and big, so it can be broken down and practiced. If you are new to this and try to go right for the choke, the way JM seems to be doing it, you will probably hurt yourself… as others have suggested in this comment thread. 😉

      ...that's why you practice. 😉 This is not something anyone can "just do" ...You have to go slow and work on the motions. it's just as easy to crack your fingers on the edge of drums & cymbals if you do't know how to hit them properly. So the answer to avoiding injury is practicing and developing the technique.

      @@Thedrummersalmanac nothing to do with the setup. It’s to do with you accidentally double hitting the cymbal with your sticks before actually muting them! It’s technique not cymbal choice.
