Little England or Little Creepy? Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
Nuwara Eliya is a city in Sri Lanka, nestled in the heart of the tea country hills. If you google Nuwara Eliya, you will likely find lots of cute pictures of the colonial style buildings, influenced by British architecture when the city was built around 1846 by British explorer, Samuel Baker. Nuwara Eliya gained its popularity not just through its rich history, but through its location as it separates the long, famous Ella - Kandy train into two shorter, manageable trips.
The funny thing is, that many people who ‘visit’ Nuwara Eliya, tend to book tours and excursions that take you straight out of Nuwara Eliya. Apart from the British-style Post Office and the racecourse, popular stops include tea plantations, tea factories and waterfalls that are a good distance away from the city.
We opted to spend all of our time exploring Nuwara Eliya itself, by foot. We wanted to meet the people who live there, try the local food and get to know the city a little better. We are SO glad that we did. We saw two very different sides to the city. It is colourful, culturally rich, beautifully green for miles and is home to wonderful, friendly people. Nuwara Eliya also feels like a lost city and abandoned in places, evoking a dystopian feel. It made us wonder whether the ‘Little England’ title has been upheld at the cost of the city’s own soul. Are they proud of this history, or is it just better for tourism purposes? Is this toy town real?

Hey guys! Have you heard of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka? Nicknamed ‘Little England’, it has many English features such as a racecourse, post office and Tudor-style buildings!
It’s common for tourists to book excursions from Nuwara Eliya, that take you OUT OF Nuwara Eliya 🤷🏼‍♀️
Instead, we decided to explore on foot to get a real feel for the place. What we found was very strange…

Still baffles me to this day why it is called little England when the majority were Scots. Most estates in the area still retain Scottish Names. Tea was introduce to Sri Lanka by Janes Taylor from Auchenblae in Aberdeenshire. Enjoyed the video.

@@lincolncallander6111 wow you have a really good point there! We remember seeing Edinburgh tea plantation and our accommodation was called ‘Galway’s Edge’. The only issue though is that you have gone in the wrong time. Normally there's a season time where most of local and foreign tourists will be going to Nuwara Eliya, and it will be so full of people. So I do recommend anyone to go to Nuwara Eliya, but during the season time.

@10.50 that is a Hanuman Kovil. It is based on a hindu book called ramayana that is a 3000+ years old book . In Sri Lanka Hanuma consider as a joke . According to the hindu stroy book called ramayana , Hanuma came from india to sri lanka to rescue a women that abducted by the king of sri lanka. So when the hanuma the genaral of indian army came to sri lanka and had a bad argument or something then the king of sri lanka set fire to the tail of the hanuma, so hanuma ran all over the city with the burning tail and set fire to the city. Sri Lankan say when some one spread bad news "It is like when hanuma's tail set on fire" as a joke.
But in india that ramayana book is a holy book not a story ,
sri lankan people refused to work in tea plantations . so the invaders go to poor areas of south india and take people from india to work in tea plantations . but even after invaders left sri lanka fully in 1977 back to england those people brought from india still are the lowest paying workers in sri lanka ,
They are highly discriminated by other tamils of sri lanka saying that people came from india low caste . In jaffna people don't donate blood members of army goto hospitals and donate blood to keep blood banks oparational. they say they don't want to mix thier high caste blood with low caste people. but they don't refuse to take blood when got in to accidents etc. less than 30% of sri lankan tamils are that way they also came to sri lanka around 400 years ago but they are the once that have power and money , they are the once use rasicim to get votes .
btw that hanuma temple made by people that came from india to work in tea plantations, they worship hanuman.

Thank you so much for your comment, that is so interesting! So Indians were taken from their home to work on Sri Lanka’s tea plantations, and the temple we visited in the video was made my these Indian people? And now Sri Lankan people use this place for their worship?
I met a guy from India recently who was explaining to me the ‘low cast’ and how it divides people in India (he spoke Tamil language and is Tamilian himself I believe)
It’s crazy to me that to this day people won’t take the blood of a person who is from a different place. I appreciate your comment a lot thank you, Kitt

@@lifelemonstravelthe caste system in Sri Lanka was worsened by the British, who used our differences to pit castes against each other for the advantage of the British rulers. Our people were manipulated and taught hate so that our British invaders could get richer and feed their sense of western superiority. They also pit the Sinhalese people and Tamil people against each other for that same greed which eventually led to terrorism, civil war and 30 years of bloodshed and economic regression. You need to learn some facts before you travel to a country and be ignorant of why that place is the way it is before yapping about things that you can never even dream to relate to. Travel is supposed to encourage growth is some people, so kindly don’t be so ready to jump to judgements just because these issues aren’t as important to you as they are to the actual communities in question.

@@chayra7517 Hi! Thank you for watching our video. We are very aware of the impact British colonisation has had on places and people. Before visiting Nuwara Eliya (and other places) we researched the history so that we can try to understand the place we are travelling to and are always respectful. We talk to locals too, and we felt that Sri Lanka and England have a very good relationship. Information online can be conflicting, so we are always glad to be educated further. If you can’t tell by our video, we love Nuwara Eliya and sing its praises in many parts. We were confused to see parts that felt ‘lost’, but have since learnt that we were here at the wrong time. There are plenty of places in England that have an eery ‘lost’ feeling too. I feel that we evoke our feelings of Nuwara Eliya, and Sri Lanka in general, in an extremely positive light throughout our videos. I feel that your comment has a lot of unbacked judgement towards Lee and I, and the purpose of our video was to never make anyone angry. Kitt
