Hi…wanted to mention how amazing your videos are. At the age of 47, and returning to school after 22 years, I was not looking forward to writing papers. Thank you for creating your channel. Your videos have been an amazing support for me. As for what stuck with me? The entire video was amazing. Boolean feature…..how amazing is that? Never knew about it. I had seen it when researching, but never clicked the box for it. So THANK YOU for all the pointers. Now, I can’t stop! You’ve inspired me to write and help minimize my paper writing fears. Again, thank you. Keep up the amazing work you’re doing. 😊👏🏼🙌🏼

    Points
    1. use Keywords correctly
    - take topic and create a list of acceptable keywords, break the topic down into subtopics/keywords also think of synonyms you could use.
    - Some keywords might be too broad. Narrow your search keywords down to be more specific and targetable.
    2. Rephrase your topic into a searchable question or questions. Google scholar will pull up answers to your questions.
    * Categorise saved articles in your library
    - use quotations to help you create your reference list
    - articles with PDF are accessible to you in full. Also check other versions because you may have access through your university library to the database where the study is offered.
    - take down title of study and search directly in your university library or ask your professor to get access to it if you really urgently need access to an article you can't get access to.
    - use Boolean operators
Sorry I have to go out but those are my notes for the first half of this video.

    Hi Chelsea,
I can not really express how grateful I am. Same as a lot of others, getting back to study after 15 years is a... I turned out so frustrated right at the very first essay. My research was not working at all. I am happy that I did not give up right there and found this video. You are amazing and I hit the thumbs/ subscribe right away and also hit a little thank you heart! Keep it up, maybe for some people these are basics but for returning students it is key to success! Thank you!

Found this video SO, so helpful. Currently working on an assignment for college and I'm a pro at this point going down various rabbit holes and just wearing myself out and getting so frustrated. I LOVED the tip on articles with a high "cited by" number, I had no idea what this was previously and knowing this is extremely handy. I also had no idea you could add articles to your library (so much better than keeping about 20 multiple browser tabs open! lol). Thanks a lot for the vid.

I liked your video. One tip I would add to your "Gaining Access..." chapter of the video is to request an interlibrary loan (ILL) thru the college or university library. They can usually get a PDF copy of the article within a day. Often, there is a way for students to submit an ILL request themselves without the help of a librarian or professor. I'd also be interested in other tips, if any, on how to avoid dubious journal articles that might appear in search results, besides looking at how much it's been cited and author credentials.

Well said. I have done this too, and also have sometimes found seemingly great articles… until I realised while reading that it was was a commercial release for a particular product, or published by a good-sounding organisation that was in fact purely focused on marketing a particular viewpoint. That’s not the same as ignoring research results I don’t like- the point os to evaluate credible evidence.
Another way I have gained access which will be relevant is through my employer’s academic library- I am a nurse.

    Few things with this:
    1) you can connect Scholar to your library in settings, so articles your library has access to are indicated in the results.
    2) if you don’t have access to a paper, speak to your librarian about options. They’ll have a quicker solution than a lecturer.
    3) high citations ≠ quality. It indicates it is notable, but could be for good or bad reasons.
And if you need help searching, speak to your librarian :)

Once I have the information I can complete my paper reasonably fast. However, I spend hours upon hours upon hours to the point that I end up having to slop the paper together to get it in by the due date. Wow. I have heard about Google scholar though never used it. I have really gained so much insight into its usage by watching your video. I am fired up to start my PGD Mass Communication studies knowing how to research with Google scholar. Please do put me though on how I can use other peoples works in my research to avoid plagiarism.

Thanks for the explanations. My question: Why would I use Google Scholar when I can use the university library? Are there any advantages? thx

I am currently studying at Coventry University, pursuing biomedical sciences and i had always believed that writing assignments and lab reports was the most challenging part because no one teaches about how to do research. You really helped me and walked us through this video on how to do effective research. I liked the boolean operation especially the allintitle operation cuz it is so helpful while writing research papers keeping in mind the resource must be credible and matches with the title. Thanks again for the amazing video

    Hello,
I am 58 and I returned back to school.I remember my first paper, I used Wikipedia as references and used footnotes. LOL. My instructor called me and told me it's not a reliable source, and footnotes are not APA format. I came across google scholar and learned. August 7, 2023 was my last day is achievimg my bachelors in Criminal Justice Administration.
Keep striving and never give up.
