    Hi Ryan. Thanks for the explanation of different cables and their traits. I haven’t put a lot of time thinking about this, but after seeing this video, maybe I should! Great job! Keep up the good work.

      Hey Dan, thanks as always! Nice thing about messing with cables is they don't take up much space

    I may just have to try the WBC Canare interconnects, and see how they compare to my homemade braided ones. Nice job, Ryan - direct and concise video!

      Thanks Neil! The WBCs don't cost much more that the unassembled components. I'd like to hear how they compare

      @@PlaybackMansion Can they be bought direct, or is Amazon the only place?
      Edit - I ordered the 1.5' long ones from Amazon. I'll use them between my Ares II and Modulus 3A, and let you know what I think!

      Ryan - I have an experiment for you to try: listen to the WBC Canare cables connected in the orientation they have labeled on the tag - and compare them connected the other way around. Let me know what you hear.
      Also, I can send you a pair of my homemade braided cables, so you can hear them.

    Even reasonably priced cables should be neutral and quiet (well shielded). Hopefully as we pay more we get more fine detail.

    • @PlaybackMansion
      @PlaybackMansion  2 роки тому +1

      I think some cables are cheaply made and marked up like crazy. Some are well designed and made but don't sound good to me in spite of it. There does seem to be a trend toward more detail as the price goes up with some low priced exceptions. I'd like to try some $1000 cables to see if the trend continues, though I wouldn't spend that much to own them

    • @1mctous
      @1mctous 2 роки тому +1

      @@PlaybackMansion My guideline is to spend no more than 10% of the source's price. I can get good interconnects for $30.

    I wish cables came with published data on their electrical properties. Then, maybe, we could discuss what they are doing in a particular chain based on those values.
    Is it even possible to make blanket generalizations about the cables themselves, or would it depend more on the two devices they are connecting? You alluded to that in the video, saying something like "in your current system". To me that implies things like output/input impedance differences and other properties between the interconnected devices could net different results .
    I'm trying to figure out how to make a more useful understanding of cables. But it seems like the only solution is to buy multiple cables and experiment.

    • @PlaybackMansion
      @PlaybackMansion  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I think multiple cables is the way to go. I think even if we had thorough, reliable data on the electrical properties- it would still be challenging to select cables because the expressed properties of our components are so complex and dependent on the room, types/levels of interference and impedance matching at all different frequencies. Probably things like barometric pressure, humidity, power quality and even sunspots also play into it.
      I just focus on the upper mids because that's where my measuring ears are most attuned to. My understanding is that the most information is lost during the conversion of electrical to mechanical energy in the speakers. Then different frequencies are reflected or absorbed by the room. So even with perfectly linear components, no interference, perfect speakers and perfect cables- we might still need adjustment because of the shape of the room or the type of wallboard we have.
      So my approach now is to sort my cables from darkest to brightest and season to taste

      @@PlaybackMansion have your general rankings survived placebo tests with someone helping you blind listen?
      I have this interesting effect where everytime I plug in a more expensive power cord or interconnect, it immediately sounds WORSE to me than what I used previously. And this is every single time. I think it's psychological where I have this inverse, negative response to the cost of the cable and perceived changes.
      I realize a lot of people are the opposite of me. They probably have an immediate, positive response to the more expensive cable when they first plug it in.
      My latest was an acquisition from guitar center. I picked up some $20 Roland RCA cables and plugged them in. They sound clearer, brighter, better than my $100 audio quest golden gate. But that's just initial impression. I really don't know what the reality is as I need to spend more time.
      I can say the Roland connectors are scary loose. Like hot dog down a hallway 😆

    • @PlaybackMansion
      @PlaybackMansion  2 роки тому

      @@erics.4113 Haha, watch out for loose.. connectors. Sounds like you have the opposite of recency bias. I haven't done any blind tests but I have owned most of these for a while and normally cycle through them when I get a new component. The general darkness/brightness of each seems consistent in my subjective listening

    • @erics.4113
      @erics.4113 2 роки тому

      @@PlaybackMansion yah the loose scares me on multiple fronts. I don't think I'll be using them much longer. I'm surprised that a pro gear company would do that, especially if you were using them in a live performance and something caught it with little force and yanked it easily out of the connector. Maybe the Roland gear has fatter RCA plugs that these fit tighter with. I dunno I don't have my vdrums anymore or I could check.
      Btw I also just did my first balanced xlr connection from DAC to pre and initially it sounded worse than my previous freebie RCA that I was using. Actually the free RCA that came with my bluesound are so far my favorite interconnect. Lol
      I must be suffering some psychological issue. More tests to come.
