  • Óbidos, a picturesque medieval town located on a hilltop approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Lisbon, is a delightful escape into history. Óbidos is often hailed as the finest walled village in Portugal. Its medieval walls wrap around the town, creating a sense of timelessness. As you explore, you'll encounter narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and bursts of colorful bougainvillea
Legend has it that Óbidos received its name from the Latin word "oppidum," meaning walled city. These very walls were constructed in the 1300s. The town's beauty and wealth made it a prized possession, traditionally owned by the Queen of Portugal. In fact, Queen Isabel received Óbidos as a wedding gift from King Dinis in 1282. The town remained in royal hands until 1883. Today, Óbidos is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network . Wander through Óbidos's whitewashed houses, cobbled alleys, and living history. The Moorish castle walls offer breathtaking views of the entire village and its surroundings. Don't miss the Porta da Vila, the main gateway from the south. This impressive double gateway features a chapel and balcony, strategically designed to thwart attackers. Inside, you'll find quaint balconies, Azulejo tiles depicting the Passion of Christ, and the bustling Rua Direita, Óbidos's main street .
