    I always thought Buster was so hateful because he was trying to cover up how envious he felt towards Tramp having a new cushy life.

    I think busters gang leaving him behind in that pile of junk out of apathy is a pretty fitting punishment for him. In my opinion, the fact that Buster preached apathy and an every-dog-for-themselves mentality to the gang, only for them to take this very same philosophy to heart the one time he needed their empathy and selflessness, and they instead indifferently leave him in the junk is a great stroke of irony.

      I think it’s nice for sometimes there be no comeuppance. However if the version were cats did help to show where the rat was to save Tramp was included they would have less of reputation as stereotypes. Maybe. People have still issues with the crows in Dumbo although they help him.

    When it comes to the rat, I always thought it was so primal and basic it wouldn't be able to function like the other animals. Some creatures seem more developed, so they have a better set communication and brain skills.
    But, the movie that I keep thinking about is "the secret of Nimn" (yes, it's not Disney) with animal testing and some animals developing better brain function. But, it can't answer for all animals...the selectivness seems only story driven. So, it's hard to answer.

    As a kid, I absolutely despised Aunt Sarah, she was almost certainly one of the Disney antagonists I hated the most back then. However, you make an excellent point that she wasn't deliberately evil or malicious, just misguided/ misled and doing what she thought was necessary to protect the house and baby. Even in the live action remake, in which she's a lot less sympathetic, there's still the rather sad moment when she arrives at the house, initially thinking she'd be babysitting Lulu, only to learn at the last second that she would in fact be dogsitting Lady (Something she clearly had no experience with), and wouldn't even be able to hold Lulu due to the family's rushed departure. I can't particularly blame her for being in a bad mood about that.
    A lot of fans have debated on if the Rat should be considered an actual villain, considering that he's basically just a feral animal doing what such creatures usually do. Sort of like Monstro from 'Pinocchio' or the T-Rex from 'Fantasia' in that sense.

      Portraying Siamese cats as villains was a poor choice by the Disney studio. Those who are familiar with the breed could tell you that. When I was a child we always had a pet cat, sometimes two, and the best-behaved cats we ever had were a couple of Siamese cats.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 2 роки тому +18

      @@coop161616 Cartoon animals are rarely made specifically to behavioral traits in certain breeds of pets, and these cats were basically thrown in for both the "Siamese Twins" pun and the fact their faces kind of look sinister. Animal breeds are basically subject to stereotypes, this film especially. Unless you get specific pet owners, you're not going to get much accuracy.

    I like how reasonable the human "villains" in the original Lady and the Tramp are. Aunt Sarah and the dogcatcher seem like decent people, just trying to do their best. I hadn't made the connection between the dogcatcher whistling and the killer from M before, but I love it! As for the rat, I'm just glad that we got Ratatouille all these years later, depicting rats as having the capacity for good, rather than just being mindless monsters, as rats often are. I had pet rats when I was a kid, they're very pleasant, intelligent animals, and I think it's unfair that mice are so often depicted as heroic in cartoons when they're so very, very similar to rats. (Super looking forward to the eventual retrospective on Ratigan from Great Mouse Detective, though. What a villain!)

    Actually, you missed a couple of kids Disney books portraying Scamp; possibly within the first few months of his life. I've had them for as long as I can remember. The first one mostly involves Scamp just getting into trouble, to the ire of Aunt Sara, who's either the main obstacle or antagonist of both books. Aunt Sara calls Scamp out on his behavior, prompting Scamp to search for some good deeds to do. He later comes across a group of firemen, practicing for a real fire by 'escaping the building' to jump onto firemen holding a blanket to catch them with. Looking at the fun, Scamp joins in racing up the stairs, to jumping onto the chute. The firemen have fun with this and eventually spray him down with water (in case someone is on fire), before realizing the time on a large building clock. Instead of returning home with praise, Aunt Sara forbids him from entering the house due to his wet fur, and is forced to spend the night at the old dog house. During the night, Scamp smells smoke coming from the house, and sees the cause, being Aunt Sara had mistakenly left the electric iron on some unfinished laundry, setting fire to the house. Desperate, Scamp breaks free to race and warn the firefighters he played with earlier (can't remember if Scamp tried and failed to warn Aunt Sara or not). Recognizing him, they race into action in full-gear with Scamp leading the way. Luckily, they put out the fire before more damage could be done. FINALLY, Aunt Sara wakes up to question why firefighters were at the house! Upon explaination, the it was SCAMP who knew of the fire and SCAMP was a hero, Aunt Sara becomes more pleasant to Scamp in future, having been awarded a medal as a fire dog.
    In the second story, Scamp still has misgivings about Aunt Sara due to her cats - most cats in general - and tries to stay away from her because he somehow almost always gets in trouble when she's and Jim Dear and Darling's house. Anyway, the story starts with the appearance of Aunt Sara, looking sad for some reason. Picking up on this, Scamp eavedropped on a conversation Aunt Sara has with Darling. All she says was, 'I've lost my poor Pumpkin!'
    Not entirely sure what the fuss was about, Scamp then decides to find Aunt Sara a pumpkin to make her happy. Going to a farm, a market, and even a giant pumpkin contest bore no fruit as most people would refuse to give away anything to a dog for free, whilst other pumpkins were too big for Scamp to bring home.
    Stumped, Scamp comes into an alley, still wondering how to get a pumpkin for Aunt Sara. Then, along comes an orange kitten tabby with while face, mittens and a ribbon around its neck. Now Scamp had faced many cats before, one of which was mean for getting close to its bowl of milk! However, this kitten was smaller than Scamp, so taking pity goes out of his way to care for it. He steals the bowl of cream for the kitten to eat, possibly not having anything to eat for a while. Out of time, Scamp returns home, feeling dejected how he couldn't find a pumpkin for Aunt Sara. He turns around to find that the kitten followed him all the way home!
    Before he could tell the kitten to leave, Darling opens the door to happily exclaim along the lines of 'Oh Scamp, you've found Pumpkin!' Finding out at last that the 'Pumpkin' he was looking for was a cat and not the vegetable, inadvertently making Sara and Pumpkin happy by reuniting each other, making Sara a bit more pleasant to Scamp as a whole (however long that'll last)!
    It was interesting growing up with these stories and the two movies, not seeing the comics until today. I appreciate how well you break down the villains of these movies and wanted to add a bit of my own. ^^

    Angel being closer to Buster's age resovles the problem of him having an infatuation with her.
    But... that makes HER infatuation with Scamp just as much of a problem, Maybe even worst considering they DO end up together.
    I think i'd rather take the villain being the creepy pedo then the love intrest.
    And let's be honest, Buster's whole thing with Angel was just for him to hide he still has a strong crush on Tramp.

      Just stop looking at their relationships through a human's point of view and look at it through a dog's point of view. To a dog, age doesn't matter. The minute they reach sexual maturity, everyone is fair game.

    I managed to find a copy of "Happy Dan the Cynical Dog" on the Internet. It's a column story about basically a cynical dog who manages to gain several families, similar to Tramp in the final film. Tramp, however, is not very cynical. Streetwise, but not cynical.

      @catbatrat1760 Рік тому

    Lady and the Tramp is purported to be completely original, but the element of a dog being blamed for attacking a child when it was actually defending him is still taken straight from the Welsh legend of Gelert- which itself is related to an Indian folktale about a Brahmin, his wife and a mongoose. The hound was owned by Llywelyn the Great, and saved the king's infant son from being mauled by a wolf. In the fight, though the wolf is killed, the babe's cradle is knocked over and Gelert is, of course, smeared with blood. When Llywelyn comes home to find the overturned cradle, his screaming baby and his dog covered in blood, he naturally assumes the worst and kills Gelert before discovering the dead wolf. In his grief at having rewarded such a faithful animal, Llywelyn buries him and never smiles again.

    I still don't understand why people get triggered by those cats.
    As you said: the movie is full of stereotypes. One of those just happen to play the part of the "bad guy".
    If they were *the only one* that could have been intentional, but not like this.
    It's like if in a movie there are 10 different characters of 10 different countries and only one of them (for the sake of the story) is the bad guy.
    That doesn't mean the movie stated *that country* is the enemy, just that character.

  • @akiriith
    @akiriith Рік тому +1

    For whatever reason, kid me never really saw Buster and Angel as a serious, intentional pairing :') I always thought it was more about control than any actual interest in her- their little gag is specifically about Buster calling her "his". Buster doesn't seem to let himself get too close to anyone ever since Tramp went on to become a pet, so it almost felt like Buster called Angel his girl to have a cheap (almost sarcastic) parody of the life Tramp had, just adjusted for his idea of "freedom". Idk, it didn't feel creepy to me because it just never felt like Buster was ever truly attracted to Angel or a contender for her affection.

    I much prefer having the cats be involved in the climax with Aunt Sarah driving Jim Dear and Darling to the pound out of guilt. Not only does it give the cats more purpose to the story and brings their arc to a close but also shows, rather then tells us that Sarah’s opinion on dogs has changed. I don’t know why they changed it but it does make me wish they used this in the remake, but then again it’s a modern live action Disney remake where every character’s nuance and subtly is thrown out for tired cliches.

While I would normally hate this cliche of couples getting together and breaking up shortly afterwards, I think it would benefit them both. Scamp showing maturity and how he still has some growing up to do and therefore not ready for a relationship right now, and give Angel a chance to develop relationships with the rest of the family which I think would be great to see. Disney get on it!!
