- These were also sent to developers only! Plays PS1 and PS2 games from any region as well as PS1 backups right out of the box. Doesn't play DVD movies. It will play PS2 backups with modifications (I think).

A Debugging Station can use only OEM MagicGate Memory Cards. FreeMCBoot can be installed on debugging stations that support using MagicGate Memory Cards. Mine currently has FreeMCBoot on an OEM Memory Card. I got a DTL-H30101 E.
Oddly enough it came from UK with a UK Power Supply but it was an NTSC console. I had to swap Internal PSU with a US PSU. I also had to replace The DVD Drive cuz it was broken in mine. Required a specific SCPH-3001 Model that had a dvd drive with a battery on its side.
In any regard tho I have a 500 GB HDD in mine and it’s got games on it via HDLoader. My model has TEST on it too. Some don’t.
This is more of a for show console. PS3 Tools and PS2 Tools can do a lot more. I have my PS3 Reference Tool but I don’t have a PS2 Tool (Yet)

I have also heard that original Japanese retail models (SCPH-10000, SCPH-15000 & SCHP-18000) don’t have an expansion bay, but instead a PCMCIA slot or PC Card slot, I’m now wondering about if there are debug units with the PCMCIA slot plus no DVD Video playback unless installed with a special memory card or something like that.
They might be, I don't know.

Also! As a heads up, from what I understand (I could be wrong) I believe the older DTL models have slower loading times on boot when trying to play games as it could obviously use different dvd media types. I could be wrong but mine is slow too even after a laser change. Once the disc has head locked, loading times are fine usually for that particular disc :)
Ah okay so that explains why it's slow.
JeffTheWinner Yeah, mine can take ages reading discs (even official stamped PS2 games) however CDs are much faster as I think the laser initially checks with a lower intensity for CDs and is able to head lock much faster. Again I could be wrong :)
@@spywarefinder That's interesting and it does make sense. I was just thinking the laser was going out given how old the thing is.
JeffTheWinner That’s what I thought as I changed the laser already and it was still taking a while to read discs then I learnt that the newer DTL models had a much faster read speed in terms of disc access. So basically it’s the console being slow with its current firmware but boy they are so cool! :D

I had this model too. I bought it at the game store for $100. I didn't know it's a rare model. The game store didn't notice it too. It's probably why they sell it cheap. This console is region free. You can play Japanese import games too. But, the only thing it can't play is DVD. I don't mind it because I never play DVD on any consoles. I heard the laser lens can mess it up. This Test model is worth $500 now.

Most developers have used Verbatim DVD-R/CD-R disks for testing. It does not have to be master disc since it’s the same thing as regular blank discs.
You still have to author DVD-R backups as a master disc or else the backup won't boot. The MECHACON is different on the PS2 TEST unit and is modified to play master-patched games, if it fails checks for legitimate games.
PS2 as a Collection
So you can play regular ps2 games. Imports and backups. You can play regular ps2 games and imports. You can also play ps2 backups if you make a masterdisc.
That is correct. The only thing it won't play is DVD movies as it doesn't have the DVD driver installed like retail units do.
your backups are DVD+R or DVD-R? I really recommend using the DVD-R because the laser can last for long.
I have some of both. I prefer DVD-R as well, but some of mine are DVD+R.
Have you ever tested PS2 backups? I heard they'll boot on these debug stations or MechaPwn'd exploited PS2s if you create a "masterdisc".
You are correct, they will direct boot PS2 backups if you burn them as master disc. I never tried it, but somewhere in my mountains of data I do have the program to do it.

@@princevinny0073 I bought LSD for way less than that 3 years ago. I haven't bought many games in 2021, due to lack of funds. I usually either haggle for a better price on ebay or just buy it out right for what the seller is asking. My friend kindly donated one to me after he had a big clearout. From what I understand it's region unlocked so you can play NTSC/JAP games as well. Aside from that I have no idea what to do with it! Can you hook it up to a PC and run other things with the right software?
I am not sure what its true potential is either. I have think it's just a test unit to test games on.

Because PS1 games will work, I bet CD PS2 games (Blue Discs) will work too, but obviously you don't have Dual Layer games (also called Gold Discs), we don't know if there gonna work or not.
For burned copies, well I just use ESR on a regular PS2 with FreeMcBoot and patch the isos that way. DVD games just patch the iso and burn, for CD games you can't use CDs, you'll have to convert to DVD (I use UltraISO) because ESR only recognises DVD discs not CDs even if the game was really on CD, and for Dual Layer you need another patcher along with ESR patcher.
Yes, the blue bottom CD PS2 games work. They only made a few PS2 games on DVD 9 and no I don't have any of those titles.
For PS2 backups to work on the TEST unit, you have to patch the ISO and author it a certain way. I think that ESR program you refer to does it, but not sure as I've never used it before.

Yes, I got it off ebay. Do a search on ebay for PS2 test console. They're not too common though, I got lucky when I found this one.

I can't remember, had it a few years now. I wanna say I paid between $300 and $500 for it. It was around the same price as my PS1 TEST unit (which was $600 when I bought it), give or take a hundred or so.
