All fat ps3 especially the 1st gen ps2 compatable ps3s overheat eventually. Due to really bad design and a really shit system control of the fan that only kicks into high gear when the ps3 is already to hot.
I believe all systems should be allowed to play the older games for them. It's crazy to own so many systems just to play your older games. Cool video sir!
Easier said than done, different hardware including architectures and optimizations for a specific system setup would require the recording of many games from scratch.
PS5 AND series x can get away with it because they both use the x86 architectures as well as their previous generation and are pretty much PCs with a different, locked OS all on one board with shared memory.

Glad you got to mess around with those options I was telling you about.the test console has features like the region free ps1 and ps2 games I dreamed about ever since the PS3 was launched back in 2006. Your even able to force upscaleing on certain games with is amazing 😉

If your PS3 is hacked, you can access debug menu on your custom firmware by enabling QA flag by pressing L1, R1, L2, R2, L3, R3, and dpad- Down when your XMB cursor highlighting "Network Settings"
I have yet to hack my original PS3 Flat 60GB...cuz I'm afraid of bricking it....
@@MetalJesusRocks been hacking mine since day one and it's stupidly easy to do. All done via the web browser. And it turns any stock PS3 to a Test unit for free. Go to ps3xploit.com and install Rebug REX and you then have a PS3 Test for the low.

If you can grab a PS3 on Craigslist for cheap it would be worth hacking. I’m considering doing this myself.

Or just convert a normal BC PS3 to debug. Cost way less and does the exact same.
@singularon1 any ps3 that is not from the first production run like the test systems has NO ps2 emulation ability at all.. no point in getting hyped, a slim ps3 is NOT capable of running ps2 games.

NP environment is actual how you switch between a live and test online environment. 🤘😁🤘 The exclusion of Blu-ray is because Sony did not want to pay the licensing, it's the same with the PS2 Test kit and DVDs. As Devs we did not need to watch movies :)
@Official Intrenz I only really remember this stuff from my time developing at PlayStation London Studio. Maybe a little more research could have been put in or even a follow-up video to this initial impression video here.

@@benisjammin626 there are reports indicating this to be a distinct possiblilty.. one of the patents surrounding the ps5 is centering around backwards compatibility, but we have no real details yet.
I wish sony released this as the main ps3 console. Just imagine playing all those games on one system.
well with the first ps3 u can... it can play ps1,ps2, and ps3 and most other ps3 can already play ps1 games. not to sure about the wack slim model

so you can play ps1 & 2 games on a ps3 just put disc in and that's it

That menu that allows you to choose between 50Hz-60Hz on PAL games was actually present on a lot of games and you don't need a PS3 Test system to toggle that. You can even use it on a regular PAL PS2. That's how I played Pro Evolution Soccer back in the day.
I don't have a test machine but I bought a backwards compatible early release machine a few months back and I love it. The PS2 upscaling is fabulous. I'm in Pal region so loving the recent PS2 vids. Love your work!

@Yung Venom Snake II that is only true for first run ps3's .. you don't get the ps2 on any other than the very first production series of ps3's .. they ripped it out after too many repairs caused by the ps2 hardware
@@snakefriesia6808 all ps3s have PS2 emulation but Sony locked it away to sell PS2 games on PSN. The original phatty had hardware emulation, the 80gb phatty had software emulation, which was locked away in the slimmer models but can be unlocked on custom firmware

I remember my fat ps3. Every time I got it repaired it lasted about 2 months then ylod again. Fun and incredible but a very costly machine to keep running.
Thats because they didnt actually fix it, it only needed $10 worth of capacitors replaced.
@@kevinragsdale6256 yep. And I took it three different places and none of them did me justice. Wish I still had it and knew a decent specialist.
Back in the day I suffered from this same issue. Took it to a very local shop who "fixed it" for $40, and lasted me about a week or 2 before I ylod again. Took it back and they "fixed it" again since it was still under their warranty. After opening it, turns out they just reflowed it from what I could tell and didn't actually replace anything. Ended up buying a slim PS3(2nd revision) and kept my old system in the closet(and forgot about it lol). Fixed it myself back in 2016 and it hasn't died on me yet. I even went a step further and custom cooled the whole thing with a beefy off the shelf PC cooler. I doubt it will ever get ylod again.
@@Tom-xy7mx that's the kind of "survival" story I like to hear. Normally, i would never have gotten rid of that fat model PS3, but i was rather burnt on the whole "reflow" issue. Plus, when the last place (youbreakifix) handled it when i took it back the second time, they gave me the repair money back and said it "just couldn't be fixed again with their tools". Slim PS3 was much cheaper by then, about a week before Black Friday.

I have cecha12 in super perfect condition: fresh thermal paste under and on the chip, tantalum capacitors from PS3 Slim, low temperatures on gpu and cpu while playing - and it suddenly died, lol. YLOD. Reball didnt helped. So all fat versions will die, its a ticking bomb.

I brought one of these Ps3 test units a year ago but have not switched it on yet but when I do this video will be a big big help.
I brought this for it’s multi region and format for the older PS games especially for the Ps 1 & 2 Library but your explanation for the other features is an eye opener for sure.

I still have my launch PS3, and will probably keep it till the day I die. Its so useful, practically eliminates the need for me to have 3 systems plugged in at the same time. That's also why I love my wii, since it also plays gamecube games(plus I have a huge library of virtual console titles on it)..

God bless my CECHB01, it collected dust for years on end until I was sitting near it one day, and noticed it had FOUR usb ports. Sure, having a 100% backwards compatible unit next to a PS Classic, OG PS1 and PS2 is a little redundant, but I’ll still hold onto this baby for my dear life!

Only 3 games on PS3 are region locked, those games are:
Persona 4 Arena
Way Of The Samurai 3 and
Joysound Dive (Japan only and PSN exclusive).
But every other games are region free.

It will play games made with the Sony SDK in Test form. Much easier to get a 60gb model and install custom firmware. Does the exact same thing for way less.
I have one of these units, the one in the video has different debug options as mine isn't running rebug. It also boots anything you throw at it Playstation wise, even backups (it will only boot PS2 backups if they're authored correctly). There's another dev system that says "tool" on the front instead of "test". No differences except the "tool" systems are more rare, can't play backups, and have more RAM.

That was the first game I got for my PS1. I still have it but unfortunately the case is broken.
I remember it came as ademo on the original demo disc that came with ps1 at launch(i think) and I musta played the demo hundreds of times.. I finally bought it years later though. Such a great game. There was just something about that triple jump and being sky high!

Great video man, super interesting. I was going to buy a PS2 test system, which used to be at one of the Konami headquarters in the UK, & I was so hyped, imagining them testing early stages of Silent Hill/MGS games, but I got outbidded on eBay :'(
I've heard great things about these PS2/PS3 test machines though, apparently they're built close to invincible, which is a shame when you think of how unstable the PS3 models we got could be

suranwrap Not very good, however, since it's still emulating it and isn't native hardware like the original console. Also, HDCP stripping doesn't work on anything but test consoles.

If memory serves me correct, Pad auto detect just makes the controller pair when plugged over usb without having to press the playstation button on the controller when you boot or launch the dev or test kit. Also the NP setting do a lot more things like specify if you're pointing to dev or production PSN when debugging online stuff.

Always wanted one of these! Though the older I've got, the more clear it's become the PS2/PS1 "upscaling" and playback wasn't all that great, so less so nowadays. But still neat to tinker with.
That sounds stupid. A system that can play three consoles in one is an amazing achievement in technology. Only other product to let you play three different generations of games was the Game Boy Advance.

This technology clearly exists, so why can't Sony implement this into the PS5 for region-free backwards compatibility? If Sony announces the PS5 to not be fully backwards compatible and region-free for PS1/PS2 discs, I'm gonna be extremely disappointed. I also don't wanna hear any BS about releasing games in batches, or a % of games not being compatible. This test system proves that full backwards compatibility was possible as far back as 2006. Get your shit together Sony, and don't release another new console until it can play every single previous gen disc, region-free!

I imagine these are really uncommon. I only saw one for sale on eBay and they're asking over $1000. Better off picking up a Launch Model PS3 for about $200 and modding it in my opinion.

That looks suspiciously like Rebug custom firmware, which can also launch PSP titles, in addition to PSX, PS2, and PS3 games. I know this, because my PS3 is jailbroken. Now I see exactly what Rebug and Cobra based their firmware tools on! Great video, and quite nostalgic.

Borat. Sagdiyev I've read online that it's fine to connect long enough to sync trophies. I can't say for sure as I don't care enough to do it. I'd much rather have access to tons of retro, psx, ps2, and ps3 games on one machine with wireless controls hooked up to my big screen via hdmi than be able to sync trophies.

Pal games run at 60 hz also on pal They give us the option to choose in each game. Also Pal PS3’s support NTSC games. Its down to if your pal tv support’s NTSC and they pretty much all do! The Pal PS3 is not region locked 😁
Not all PAL games have that option.
And PAL consoles are region locked in the sense that they can't play PS1 and PS2 games from other regions. PS3 games from other regions mostly work fine though.
Tanerion My pal CECHA01 version PS3 plays. US, and JPN, PS1,PS2 and PS3 games absolutely fine. I have never seen a tv less then 60hz in the UK since the early 90s. Not everygame offers you the option to change the FPS (hz) but you simply dont need to! The PS1 (pal) came standard with a NTSC scart! The only problem ever was it would display the US games in black and white until you switched the TV to NTSC.
Again though my PS3 is full region free. You can do a simple google to see this!
Tanerion i just read on a forum other people having the same problem you mentioned. However there was others like myself who had no problem on the same thread. I guess it must be a certain batch that doesn’t have the problem

Tanerion i think they do a Pal and a NTSC version. Its one with 4 USB ports on the front with the silver disc-drive and ps logo just under the slot.

I have a softmodded PS3 and it's the same. It allows you to access to all these developer options.

damn, so sony had a working units that can play 3 generations of games and for some reason ps3 didn't get that feature. I bet there is ps4 that plays them all, but we keep getting remasteres and hd collections for 40-60$
I doubt that the PS4 could properly emulate a PS3 but surely they could make it run both PS1 and PS2 titles easily, but money speaks louder than fans for most companies
All PS3s do everything this unit can do (and more). Just mod it and install custom firmware.

You forgot psp games that it can play too compatibility is pretty low though.
@@edbeasant9494 Yes they are. You convert them to a .PKG or a PS3 disk format with various tools. I have every PS1 and PS2 game ever made in every region on my modded PS3. I have never seen one not work, and I have tested probably 90%-92% of them.
I had the original backwards compatible PS3 and it was great for several years… I was so sad the day it stopped working. I ended up purchasing 3 different PS3's… That's how terrible the quality assurance was for that system. It was such a disappointment, my PS2 never broke!

"np environment" actually is what network the console is connecting to. Retail consoles are set to "np" (regular PSN), third party developers use "sp-int", and there's over 50 other - mostly Sony internal - networks you can choose which are like private PSNs. Previously, they weren't whitelisted so you and a friend could go on sp-int, search matchmaking, and you'd be the only two people playing. On a CFW console, setting it to something other than np basically guarantees that you won't connect to PSN, so you won't get banned. If you just googled "np environment" you probably ended up on a wiki page I wrote on reddit :)

My two hacked Playstation 3 slims with CFW can do that too. +Debug Menu and they play Blu Ray movies flawlessly.

These units have been out for over a decade and were already expensive and hard to find.
@@MetalJesusRocks No, this is incorrect the systems have been going down in price until this video, since then they've risen in price. You've also caused history to be lost by creating this video. If they're so hard to find why do I have multiple sources with 50+ of these to sell each? I own 16 of these as it is and have more coming to preserve their contents.
This video is very misleading too, most of what a TEST can do a RETAIL CEX can do once Rebug/CFW is installed. The only major difference is TEST's can have HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) disabled where as a RETAIL CEX cannot.
There is multiple versions of TEST units some allow PS2 backwards compatibility and some don't.
Along with this you have caused history to be lost, these systems in most cases still contain data even if deleted.
Unreleased games are very common to be found and recovered on these systems, and now that history is lost.
Many of these systems have come from defunct/closed game studios and literally the only copy of cancelled projects is found on these.
By using these systems people are destroying this important history which is gone forever. The PlayStation 3 is very tricky with data recovery and literally 1KB in data written can destroy all the rest of the valuable history making it impossible to save for future generations.
As a gamer I would have thought you'd known this.

@@ObscureGamers You have a valid point , but at the end of the day the owner has the right to do what they wish with it. You can't save every PS3 dev unit out there. The price may have gone up so be it and it will continue to go up unless ps5 is wholly Backwards compatible. We're playing video games here people not saving lives!
