I have fitted loads of Velux but only in the last few I spotted this trick. I can put the glass in on my own or of course much easier if two people, Use the two window cleaning slide bolts on the bottom of the windows. The floppy hinges automatically align themselves once those bolts are in place. Try it, it works like a dream.
Fantastic timing as I've got two of these exactly the same velux 's to fit in my loft conversion this week. Always good to see a true professional do a perfect job.
Make sure you come 100 mm minimum up from battern that runs under window that allows the flashing to sit perfect without having to put sacrificial lead front apron
I recently fitted a steel roof to an outbuilding with the help of my nephew. I decided to use a story stick (based upon "what would Robin Clevitt do") to ensure that all the screws hit the purlins. Boy did it make the job easier, quicker and more accurate. It also felt good to teach my nephew some of the things I have learnt through watching your channel. Thank you for the content and the lessons.
Nice video, interesting to see Robin doing some aspects of roofing work whilst fitting the skylight. As a roofer, I always slot a length of DPM under the nearest felt overlap above the skylight (wider than the skylight). I then fold the DPM back on itself with a slight angle so that any water that runs down the existing felt towards the skylight will run well away. Probably a bit overkill, but it was how I was taught and at least I know I’ll never get the phone call about water gushing down the back of a skylight I’ve fitted. The only thing I would mention, if I was being really picky, is that Robin didn’t dress the flashing onto the tiles very well, which kicked up the bottom tile cuts. Other than that, really good demonstration as always by Robin. Really useful to those who haven’t fitted one 👍
Thank you, I tried doing the job by referring to the official Velux vids and the manual which came with the windows, F*****g useless! Eventually found yours- what a difference!! Thanks again, saved me.
This video was a god send! First time i've ever fitted one of these and i must admit cutting a huge hole in my roof and opening my house up to the elements was quite a daunting thought. You can guarantee that if i do anything exterior it will chuck it down and blow a gale. Anyway, I used this video as reference and i know have a perfect fitted roof window. A massive thank you to you (and obviously me 😅).
Velux flashing system has come a long way since I last did one - probably 30 yrs ago! If I did one now I would definitely be watching this video. Excellent walkthrough Rob, thanks.
Same. I did them in Dutchland some 32 to 36 years ago, including a few in thatched roofs. I did a few here in NZ some 30 years ago and never again. Not that common here.
@@kiwigrunt330 never again, as in you hope to never do it again? Or never again, as in it just didn’t happen? (I’m in nz too). I would like to put one of these in our tile roof but I’m worried about any leaks, as I’ve hear people say any skylight will leak eventually. These look pretty solid though.
@@Tonisuperfly Never again as it just didn't happen. Few houses in NZ have them as most roof spaces are not pitched steep enough to occupy. Velux windows are pretty bomb proof. They have gone through decades of continuous innovation and improvement and are probably the best you can get anywhere in the world. The weakest point is the transition between the roofing and the flashings. More so, as Robin alluded to, as the roof pitch declines.
During the istallation of the velux window, I had some difficulties. The detailed description at time 32.50mins in that video helped me a lot to fit it correctly.Thank you 😊

Fantastic video! I was looking at the included "instructions" with mine and I was despairing at the thought of trying to follow them. Even though mine is for flat tiles, the various parts of the flashing look very similar and I'm now confident that I can follow the general principles to install. Thanks!
Just fitted a GGU SK06 0070, 1st time and the last, fitted into a utility, plasterboard ceiling, roof timbers 5", felt and 1" plain concrete tiles. Without your video I think I would have given up. It took 3 burly guys to put the glass in and we were teetering. Like your vids all brilliant.
When fitting the casement you flick the bolt on the top of the casement into the hole on the bottom of the frame that allows you to line the hinges perfectly and safely then you pull the leaver out and close the window that bolt is also used to lock the window in open position to allow for easy cleaning
Even with the later Velux windows the tiles at the bottom corners are still raised proud above the flashing - a home for all the creepy crawlies. The other issue is if you fit a Velux window on a shallow angle roof - prone to not draining properly and resulting in freezing snow / water resulting in internal water ingress. Local Building inspector said that he has come across two instances.
Thank you very much. We can always learn something between all the available videos. My only thought on this installation is that, because you had a choice, it might have been better?/neater to have laterally positioned the window ~half a tile along (to the side) so that the cut tiles have their valleys touching up to the flashings rather than the peaks. NoAxe

What timing, a week after I installed mine! We skipped the insulated frame. We did insulate all the openings with foam, so I hope it's alright. Thanks once again for sharing your knowledge!
All the side tiles I tend to screw them down so the wind can’t take them ,and if you need to get in there again they just screw them off .the foam tends to lift them up .

But at the very least I now know what else to inspect for, on the principle that someone bodging one aspect of a job can do as much for other aspects.

Like you I have fitted loads of roof lights, all the main brands, but I like Velux best!!! this is a very good detailed video on how to fit a roof light you won't find better, thanks for posting all of your excellent work.
My experience of Velux (for shits and giggles). Came back to the last job, my newly cut roof, to find that the roofer had installed the two Velux windows without the insulation collars. They were sat there, in their boxes unopened. The installation instructions were in a bush. He said he’d fitted millions of velux and never seen an insualtion collar and that they must be new (bollocks, I was fitting them over a decade ago). He said he thought the boxes were some blinds. Didn’t read the supplied guide. Most recently I fitted a pair of Velux windows in a steel framed loft conversion (pitched rafter cords are light gauge steel). The steel fitter mixed up cm and mm whilst following the Velux framing diagram and had to add in extra trimmers and side rails to make the correct aperture (which ended up being ridiculously tight, partly because of the 8mm hex head tek screws he used). He said he’d fitted hundreds of Velux windows but he didn’t read the guide (it was in the skip). The roofers then whacked their top and bottom battens in at random heights and lengths (Velux installation instruction specify location and length). Then the roofers drew the bottom of the felt skirt over the top of the bottom course of tiles (rather than over the roofing membrane, under the batten). Then they cut and laid the tiles to the side and top way past the maximum distance from the frame flashing. They said they’ve fitted thousands of Velux and always done it like that. I cut new tiles and laid them as per Velux installation instructions. The roofers also tried their damndest to convince me not to use the top drainage channel and the tile support bar. Velux have obviously spent a lot on R&D to ensure that their windows don’t leak but there are loads of ‘professionals’ out there just ignoring the fitting guides. It’s laughable. The standard defensive response “I’ve always done it this way” doent mean it’s the correct way. I love Velux windows but they need to be fitted as per the instructions.
These new next generation top hung windows are great. I fitted 2 a year back. I accidently opened the window and it locked in that position, and it took me a while to work out how to release it!

Another great vid Robin! Could have done with some more 'cut-aways' to show close-ups of the details, but nice 👍 I have fitted a handful of Velux windows years ago,& have never seen a malfunctioning one, or a YEARS old one leak,or rotting...! I was a bit concerned about the 'upturned' tile-ends diverting rain down the sides...😳
VELUX probably the best roof window 👍☘️🇮🇪👋, good video, wasn't going to watch but glad I did, sometimes the instructions on any of these windows can be a head scratcher 😩
Nice video petty it wasnt two year ago when me and my workmate fitted a 1200 wide by 800 or something like dat top hung and you guessed it crancked it so couldn't take d glass out on and had to fit it on an exciting slate roof with a roofing ladder dat was awkward 🙈
Great instructional video, Velux instructions are designed by Ikea people & can be difficult to understand? Recently fitted 2 x Velux & there was a stage after fitting frame where you re-insert glass part & check frame is aligned across the planes (ie: so glass part closes square onto faces of frame) There are supplied packers to adjust frame on opposite corners? 🤔
Yes there is a stage where the glass gets fitted to check alignment and plastic wedge if needed. Then the screws get fastened home before taking the glass out.
The instructions say to fit the glass just before securing the frames with screws , this is because there may not be an even gap. Also there is a black wedge in the kit which can be used to pack up the edge of the frame to make sure the window closes level.
Did you not see where we square up the frame as we fix it?? If you put the glass back before you screw the frame it is in the way for the flashing and the tiling part
Obviously everyone has there own methods and yours works good. It just I came across this as well as seen other installations where the gap around the frame is uneven. Hence why I said the screws don't get fully driven in at this stage to allow any minor tweaking. Obviously glass needs taking out again.
We have a solid underroof in solid plates that go the whole roof down. Would you use a piece of wood and kit instead of the iron gutter or use tape to connect to the metal gutter?
Love Velux windows. Best roof windows by far. I too have done hundreds. Preferred the old bracket to rafter to level of red line. Just sitting on a tile batten not such a good idea. Also Robin in my opinion they are not pan tiles. Talk to Andy and see if he agrees. We used to call them double Roman tiles. They are not a fixed gauge. A pan tile has a lip moulded into the tile at the lap point and they are fixed gauge. Mostly clay not concrete like those. And based on the Belgian pan tiles. Things may have changed just never heard a non fixed gauge tile called a pan tile. You can even get a fixed gauge horizontal and vertical tile. They are a pig to lay. Double Roman pretty easy but heavy bumping up on your head.
Do you ever need to Nail or glue the tiles in place to keep them from Slipping. one of my tiles right at the bottom left has slipped (possibly after a bad storm) Trying to decide how to best fix it.
Help. At 2am she opened the (shallow angled) centre-hinged Velux a little more for cooling wind. But instead, received a sheet of water. Over herself, bed/floor/furniture. It hadn't rained for two days. Clearly a drainage problem but how best to fix it? (When installing sat' dishes two of us commonly removed/replaced such windows).
Doing so many lately builders just put them in any where so require a sacrificial lead front apron u can’t really do a cut course with tiles that have deep profiles kicks all flashings up and windows struggle to close
Yet another great video Robin. I’ve got one of these coming up to do, same old (prob brittle) felt and tiles but there’s no sarking board. After you trimmed the tiles, what was the red coating that seemed to be applied to the cut surface? (21:46)
Cheers fella. I’m in the middle of a combination Garage leading to loft conversion creating a Bedroom, en-suite, mezzanine reading room and staircase access to loft storage area. Removed the firewall and used the blocks to build a retaining wall in the garden. Am putting in some steels on Monday then a bit of self levelling and removing the last of the outer wall for patio access to a breakfast deck, then onto adding floor joists. Using so many of your videos for tips and techniques it’s unbelievable lol… I particularly appreciate the detail you go into. Keep up the great work.
Was looking at the tile overlap on the side flashing. Would it be better to have less trimmed off the tiles to give a closer fit? Only mention this because the birds have pulled the foam out of my flashing & the rain drives under on very severe days. Have flaunched edge with cement for now to keep things sealed until I can get a proper chance to rework the tile gaugeing
This is the recommended space as laid out by Velux, it is important to have space for the flashing gutter not to get blocked, birds can be a right pain!!!
Hi Robin …. Another good informative video, just wondering is there any reason you could not have left a little bit more on the tiles that went up the side of the window? So there would been more of a round over to the side of the Velux, Im just about to fit two of these in my house, You didn’t show a final shot from outside after the window was in so I was wondering whether there would be anything getting in the way …. Thanks Mark
If you have calyx window like the one in the video with the hinge on the end on the high side , can this window be modified to be a fire rated window ? Normally fire rated windows have a mounting in the centre of the window and it then open’s vertically when a fire is detected to maximise the opening to let smoke escape . Can a normal end mounted window meet fire regulation and if not can it be modified to have the hinge in the centre of the opening allowing the window to open vertically ?
The whole area around fire vent windows, means of escape windows and other fire regulation requirements will depend on the building use, type, height, local authority building control rules etc, there are some basic rules around any window roof or vertical window in a wall that dictates the minimum size the clear opening of the sash needs to be to comply with means of escape this is pretty standard and easy to achieve with many standard windows or roof windows, but.... auto opening fire smoke venting windows are a different beast!! I am sure Velux would have solutions so look at their website for more info

I Just Hung one and i can Lock the springs in place but the Windows stays open. It is locked in That position. What am i doing wrong. After some fidling i manage to make one side work, engage with the spring and spri g is functioning. But the other side stays locked in the open position... Help
@@benhoste6004 i cant exactly remember , but it involved prodding in a screwdriver somewhere. but there is a way to unlock it. there is a velux video but not totally clear.
Hey. Thx for the respons. I can unlock the springs That is No problem. But when i open it so the springs are engaged ( 2clicks) it Will Not close softly (with the springs). It stays in the open position.
I Read That some people had thesame. Thought you 2. But nowhere is There an answer to fix it. So... Help 😅!
@@benhoste6004 thats to do with the balancing i think. theres some tabs on the ram i thing which can be moved over depending on the wight of the sash. try one one ach side at a time.
@@JayG2K ok. Will try. Just spend the while Day trying everything but i can only close it If i disconnect the springs completely
I thought robins wig was going to blow off at one stage
Another great vid Robin! Could have done with some more 'cut-aways' to show close-ups of the details, but nice 👍
I have fitted a handful of Velux windows years ago,& have never seen a malfunctioning one, or a YEARS old one leak,or rotting...!
I was a bit concerned about the 'upturned' tile-ends diverting rain down the sides...😳
This is a great video. So helpful for my install. Thanks guys
Dużo pomogłeś tym video mojemu mężowi ..
Dziękuję .🙂
Can you do a video in how you measured and made the wooden template frame for the window. Thanks
Excellent job my friend keep it up
Thank you 😊
VELUX probably the best roof window 👍☘️🇮🇪👋, good video, wasn't going to watch but glad I did, sometimes the instructions on any of these windows can be a head scratcher 😩
Thanks 👍
Word of the day: ingenious!!!
Well spotted!! When I was editing the video I was surprised how many times I said that!!!!
Well done Mr Clevett.
Bet your insurers love these videos.
Great video !! thanks Robin
Nice job as always, I agree with you regarding Velux, it is a great product.
Excellent job.
Nice job as usual robin 👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Sweet Armani tee, more hench than I realised
Great video as always robin I fit a lot of these myself picked up some good handy tips top job 👍
Thanks 👍
Great video Robin 👍🏻
Velux windows, definitely one of the few reliable things in this country.
Agreed!!
Great job
Jave the same kind of roof, have to Insulate between rafters, they are 100mm wich size of RIP isulation can use 100mm?????
Thank You
Excellent video. Thank you
We have a solid underroof in solid plates that go the whole roof down. Would you use a piece of wood and kit instead of the iron gutter or use tape to connect to the metal gutter?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Rind regards

Your welcome Declan
Nice video. If it were my house I would sleep easier knowing the roof tiles were nailed back on though.
Great video. If I need to remove the glass again, do I disengage the springs first to stop the arms from moving out?
Doing so many lately builders just put them in any where so require a sacrificial lead front apron u can’t really do a cut course with tiles that have deep profiles kicks all flashings up and windows struggle to close
What about key light windows, I fitted 3 of them into my extension, very similar it they have an incorporated expanding foam seal.
Thats a great feature of the keylight windows
Was the gutter detail correct , i thought the velux felt need wrapping back on itself ?
Being a picky frigger Robin. The insulated square is symmetric not asymmetric as you said.
👍🔨❤️
FİRST CLASS WORK.....THANKS....
Yet another great video Robin. I’ve got one of these coming up to do, same old (prob brittle) felt and tiles but there’s no sarking board. After you trimmed the tiles, what was the red coating that seemed to be applied to the cut surface? (21:46)
Hi Rob, we washed the dust off and that looks like red dye!!
Using so many of your videos for tips and techniques it’s unbelievable lol…
I particularly appreciate the detail you go into. Keep up the great work.
Nice video but those cut edges of the tiles up each side seem liable to lift in a gale?
Once they are locked into place by the one above etc they are really solid and they never slip or move
Just fitted my first Velux. You are a week late Robin. Ah well, sure you have some tips in this video if there’s a next time.
Thanks Mark
Love it!
Very thorough video Robin 👍🏼
Every velux window is designed to be installed without going outside climbing on the roof, all should be done from inside.
brilliant job
Battling with my velux. Lots of leaks. Builders ordered a flashing kit EDW SK10 2000 (red line) with a blue line GGL SK10 3070. Is this a mismatch given the different colours? Would be so grateful for any advice
What do people think of the Fakro window systems ?
I've never seen tiles with more than 600 centres, most recommended 450
It is the panels of sarking board that gives the strength to the roof along with allowing for the wider trusses
@@ukconstruction so he just weakened the roof putting 8 of these in
The sarking can be trimmed for windows locally and no structural impact is made on the structure by forming these openings
Thx our veluxe is leaking and I don’t know what to do every roof I get all was let’s us down. I am just getting over cancer. And I know no clue what to do
Do you not need to strengthen the roof around the windows?
