I actually always did just think that all you need to know in terms of the Minor and Majors is that Minor is dark while Major is bright lol. Great and informative video my man!

Also helps to know the scale formula in intervals. Intervals are the most liberating concept in music. A major interval is the same as 2 frets or a whole step, a minor interval is the same as 1 fret or a half step. Major scale formula: W W h W W W h. Major scale formula: Tonic is C - whole step to D - whole step to E - half step to F - whole step to G - whole step to A - whole step to B - half step back to C.

The way I think about it is that if you are playing the 5 chord in a minor key as a dominant 7th then this is coming from the harmonic minor not the natural minor scale. So in A minor you then have the G sharp in the scale to make the E7 chord

Great video, thanks for the help. I’ve heard the term “perfect cadence” to describe the V chord (played as a 7th) resolving to the i chord in a minor key. Think Mark Knopfler does this a bit, I.e. A-7 resolving to Dm in Sultans of Swing
I always thought Boring=Major, Touching(or strong)=Minor....... if anyone going through the comments can use this, happy that I am helpful for you. But Major key looked all different and quite interesting when I learnt about Relative minor. When you hear the boring ( or like he said, ‘happy’) tone suddenly change to a strong and touching kind of a tone then it’s the relative minor slipping in. And again like the guy in the video has put forward, make sure there’s no key change 😊 And please don’t call Minor key as ‘Sad’ key cause it’s not the key that makes the song sad but the lyrics, without lyrics the Minor keys, what I feel is, they are very effective in conveying the message when compared to major key, so I call it strong key, And you are good brother, that’s really wonderful to make a video to help others out 👍🏻
I may be wrong, but my understanding was the notes were derived from low fractional divisions of an octave, like halves or thirds. So when you start in different places, there is a different frequency change relative to the theoretical change in interval. I just say they all sound a bit different.

You can totally do that but when you make it an E7 chord, you're adding a G# note that becomes a leading tone into Am (since it's the note directly before)
I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty certain you just have to memorise it. A major key is always major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished; this pattern continues indefinitely throughout the octaves. In a minor key, just start on the 6th chord of that pattern and continue from there, meaning minor, diminished, major, minor, minor, major, major.
You can go through a scale and construct all the chord triads based on 1/3/5 easily enough. C major is the simplest because there are no sharps or flats: Just skip the second and fourth notes: I - C E G, ii - D F A, iii - E G B, IV -F A C, V - G B D, vi - A C E, vii° - B D F The Roman numerals are just a standard way of depicting major vs. minor, with upper case being major. Now play those triads. It is totally a worthwhile exercise to figure this out on your own, it really helps with learning the fretboard. But just for that C/E/G triad try the eighth fret, seventh fret, fifth fret on the E, A and D strings. Then PLAY with the shapes. Notice that if you move the middle note down one fret on any major chord it changes the sound quality to become 'sadder' and that if you move the middle note up one fret on any minor chord it becomes 'happier'. This is the essential difference between major and minor sounds, and it's all about whether you are playing a major or minor third for that middle note.

If you play c major g major a minor f major then back to c, c sounds like almost like tension relief like the "home chord", so that chord progression would be in c . But if you played something like am dm em f major back to a minor again, a minor sounds like the home chord so that would be in a minor
Why E7 instead of Em7? And A7 instead of Am7? Yes, the 7s sound marvelous (that A7 turns the Dm from Homer Simpson to Cary Grant) but still befuddled about using the major-ish dominant 7 instead of a minor 7 which would fit the scale. I think.
Music theory is just used to explain why certain things sound good and bad in certain musical contexts, it's not the be all and end all. In jazz almost any chord is substituted for a dom7 or even further. The point is you can use any single chord whenever you want through consecutive modulations, substitutions/borrowing etc. The reason E7 resolves better is because of the tritone between the g# and the d. We are substituting the m7 out for the dom7 to create more tension as the tritone between the M3 and dom7 is greater than the p5th between the m3 and m7 meaning the release is more satisfying.
Having the major 3rd of that dominant7 chord coming out of left field, (in E7-to Am's case we're introducing a G#, in A7-Dm's case we're introducing a C#), gets us that much closer to the root note of the minor resolve. G#--> Am, or C#-->Dm
Loving your vids. Question u may be able to help with. I've been playing with caged system to learn major scales and chord shapes across the fretboard. When I play in minor key its leas straightforward to use caged system to find where I am. I tend to play a chord shape/scale, then step back 3 semitones to play the minor shape I'm looking for. But this isn't quick or intuitive for me. Any links or suggestions? Also am I picking u up right, that you use major interval numbers to describe minor interval's? Instead of a i iv v, am, dm, em, its a vi, ii, iii? Another thing to get head around...
Min Thu Ko Yeah like the guy above me said, it's simply adding a note from the A harmonic minor scale (a G# note) which is a semitone (one fret) lower than an A note (the 7th note in A harmonic minor), creating a strong pull to resolve onto the A minor. Harmonic minor is simply a minor scale with the 7th note in the scale raised by one semitone.
Well Am is still the relative minor to the key of C, the harmonic minor-ness just comes into the equation when the note from that E7 chord gets thrown in there.
No. The V (dominant) chord in Dm is A major (Dm E° F Gm A Bb C Dm). The #7 of the D harmonic minor scale (C#) is added to the scale-tone v chord (Am) to convert it into a V chord (A major). B7 would have no place in Dm except as a "borrowed" chord since the A in the chord is the only note that corresponds with the Dm scale.
I alway's thought metal , hard rock , rock , dark classical , sad blue's equal minor vs Country , Pop , Jazz , anything happy is Major or something like that . Like some say play with your ear's !

I just noticed that i need to go to guitar kindergarten, i can strum a few chords but i don't have a clue what he is talking about, i am a complete beginner and trying to learn some simple strumming campfire songs but this sounds very technical and hard to understand for a 34 year old.

Loving your vids. Question u may be able to help with. I've been playing with caged system to learn major scales and chord shapes across the fretboard. When I play in minor key its leas straightforward to use caged system to find where I am. I tend to play a chord shape/scale, then step back 3 semitones to play the minor shape I'm looking for. But this isn't quick or intuitive for me. Any links or suggestions?
Also am I picking u up right, that you use major interval numbers to describe minor interval's? Instead of a i iv v, am, dm, em, its a vi, ii, iii? Another thing to get head around...

Why Em into E7 and not Em7 in the key of Am?
Because adding the g# creates a leading tone that resolves to Am stronger. Its a chord substitution from the a harmonic minor scale.
Min Thu Ko Yeah like the guy above me said, it's simply adding a note from the A harmonic minor scale (a G# note) which is a semitone (one fret) lower than an A note (the 7th note in A harmonic minor), creating a strong pull to resolve onto the A minor. Harmonic minor is simply a minor scale with the 7th note in the scale raised by one semitone.

Well Am is still the relative minor to the key of C, the harmonic minor-ness just comes into the equation when the note from that E7 chord gets thrown in there.
Um, isn't B7 the dominant 5th of Dm?
No. The V (dominant) chord in Dm is A major (Dm E° F Gm A Bb C Dm). The #7 of the D harmonic minor scale (C#) is added to the scale-tone v chord (Am) to convert it into a V chord (A major).
B7 would have no place in Dm except as a "borrowed" chord since the A in the chord is the only note that corresponds with the Dm scale.
I alway's thought metal , hard rock , rock , dark classical , sad blue's equal minor vs Country , Pop , Jazz , anything happy is Major or something like that . Like some say play with your ear's !

I mean... really? I could go on for hours on Rick Beato. He obviously is knowledgeable and all that stuff, but he is one of the biggest douchebags on UA-cam. He talks to his audience like he is giving orders, he is always bossy and authoritative, he is incredible touchy and as soon as someone doesn't agree with him he mocks and bans people. When confronted with the slightest critique he reacts like a five years old. He criticized Patreon for years saying "I don't believe in Patreon, if you give me money you immediately have to get something back in return" referring to his ebook and his courses, but when he saw he didn't sell enough ebooks, suddenly he created his own shitty clone of patreon that he calls "The Beato Club". I mean, I am a subscriber of both his channels because he puts out some great videos (not all of them) but sometimes that dude is unbearable. He should avoid mocking people publicly. I just noticed that i need to go to guitar kindergarten, i can strum a few chords but i don't have a clue what he is talking about, i am a complete beginner and trying to learn some simple strumming campfire songs but this sounds very technical and hard to understand for a 34 year old.
You can make the major key sound sad by going from the I to the iii, and make the minor key sound happy by going from the ii to the V.
Definitely a lot of ways to manipulate chord progressions.
